People also liked the lore and atmosphere. There's nothing that feels like MK in the market today. Sure there are violent gory games, but not in that east asian fantasy setting.
Mortal Kombat is the COD of fighting games, they're never going to try and actually make a legitimately good game, it's just something for dudebros to sit down and go "wooaahh!!" at the fatalities until the next one. Rating it is therefore irrelevant, you simply ignore it because it's never going to be a good series.
I didn't play it but it from what i've seen it seems like a 6/10. The gameplay looks slower, and the kameos are just a lazy excuse for a real tag system that mk9 had, and to give the impression of having more characters they didn't want to properly add. Also from what i heard the gameplay is a step backwards from mk11 and brings back some problems they had fixed. Also another fricking reboot, just creatively bankrupt.
Allow me to soapbox about fatalities
They obviously can't get away from it because it's tradition at this point, but I don't think MK fatalities fit the games anymore. They used to be a few seconds where a heavily digitized/pixelated version of an actor got set on fire or decapitated. Now they're needlessly drawn out cartel execution videos where the loser is mutilated/torn limb from limb/beaten in horrific ways, screaming all the while. It's even worse in the more recent games which have placed a significant emphasis on character interplay. You can have two heroic characters who are buddy buddy in the story mode tear each other apart while the victim screams in agony and the victor mocks them. It's even weirder when you have parents doing it to their children, or between two characters who are supposed to be in a romantic relationship. Some of the prematch dialouge will have 2 characters say they should team up or spar, only to end with one of them dead.
The real issue is that you sit through 20 seconds of dead time between each match online in which you don't even bother watching muh fatality since you've seen it about a 100 times already because the homosexual of an opponent you get mached with usually wins once, pops a fatality and leaves like the little b***h they are
Fatalities are like cinematic supers, in the 90s it was amazing but in the modern era where the ranking system is a thing and people play a fighting game for more than 30 minutes, it gets old and repetitive

This. Any time someone does a fatality on me i just alt f4 and restart the game because it's faster to do that then to watch the fatality and then scroll the clunky ass menus.
Bet the Halloween Mileena skin is going to be $10 like the Scorpion one. These guys are out of control, the skin packs in 11 weren't that overpriced. Why are they acting like this is a f2p game?

It's alright, some fun to be had, but it really feels like it peaked with MKX and MK11.
Really wish they'd give the series a break for a while and start working on that possible reboot of Primal Rage that Ed was teasing a few years ago.

Funny since SF6 literally has one button specials and combos. SF6 is way more scrub friendly than MK1.
