Meanwhile I just got done playing Cyberpunk 2077 fully path traced at 4K using DLSS 3.5 ray reconstruction and it was glorious. Seethe and cope poors.

Cyberpunk thus far is the only game to properly take advantage of ray tracing/path tracing as far as I know. Shit looks incredible and adds to muh immersion, I can't wait until everyone has RT-capable cards and we get RT-only games so poorgays aren't holding us back. https://youtu.be/qvu4aru39SA

No its the realistic take of how nvdia capitalice it and raped it fricking idiot

Go get a job instead of whining about what other people have and enjoy.

What's the issue that's how people look in an unpolished mirror IRL. and before anyone says its not unpolished. It's hogwarts, everything is covered in dust to make it more atmospheric.

I hate marketing gimmicks so much. people treat reflections like it's some holy grail. how about you make a GOOD GAME

Real time ray tracing has been the holy grail of rasterized lighting for as long as I've been alive you fricking idiot. Calling it a marketing gimmick is the dumbest thing I've ever heard on this board and I've seen a lot of stupid shit. Congratulations moron.

the marketing gimmick is NVIDIA putting out this pile of shit tech and calling it done

Before Nvidia came along with their tensor cores, you'd be lucky to get 5FPS in path traced Quake. Now I'm playing Cyberpunk @ 4K/90-100FPS path traced. "Shit tech"? It's digital sorcery what they've done with DLSS/frame gen and tensor cores.

you know light bounces are a thing right? just because a game has raytracing doesn't mean that the lighting will look good. you can have raytracing with a low amount of light bounces, which looks like ass, which is how raytracing works in realtime rendering. it's literally a marketing gimmick

          >low amount of light bounces

take a five second look at this video and tell me that's a low amount of light bounces being used in a fully path traced Night City

DLSS/frame gen isn't raytracing, it's a large crutch to help raytracing get anywhere close to acceptable performance.

Raytracing is, for almost every single game, just running a lightmapper in realtime with worse quality, for no reason at all.

inb4 some moron posts "b-b-but that's also raytracing!!!!!":
No one in any of these threads is talking about offline rendering.

              >no reason at all.
there is a reason. To have ray traced lighting in real time. Baked lighting can only look correct if the geometry is static, which sucks.

                >Baked lighting can only look correct if the geometry is static
which is the case for almost every single game out there that isn't a physics sandbox meme game.

how did crisis or half life 2 handle light?

                Anonymous

Half Life 2 had really basic lighting tech. The art direction did a lot of heavy lifting there. The map geometry has pre-baked lighting that's not much better than the original Quake engine tech. Objects within the game can cast a realtime shadow onto the world from a single light source which can often project straight through other objects. They made some gradual improvements to Source over the years, by Portal 2 they had better lighting using projected textures but it was still pretty far behind other engines.

Crysis had a much more advanced unified lighting model, but it's still nowhere near as accurate as fully raytraced GI. They replaced it with a kind of stop gap solution in the remasters with SVOGI.

cubemaps? screen space? duplicate rendering? oh no no no we took care of that. now if you turn RTX off you wont have any reflections at all 🙂

Is there any example of ray tracing on non-realistic graphics games?

the reason this technology is a joke is because of the moronic amount of latency it adds. may look good but it feels awful to play. i don't know why people don't care about making games feel good to play anymore. we're just adding more and more layers of abstractions causing more and more latency. this is even further exacerbated by the insistence of making every peripheral wireless for no reason. i fricking hate it.

Because they aren't working properly, you need to mod the game to get reflections that don't look like shit.
