Nah. RE4 going for a more action gameplay didn't change the whole Umbrella virus shit. At best, there was a change in gameplay.
RE7 completly rebooted the franchise and made it about ghost little girls and redneck mutants and giant psychopaths and stuff. It was beyond stupid. The whole "mold" thng is stupid, the fact that it was followed by LITERAL VAMPIRES AND WEREWOLVES made it even worse.
The problem with your take is that it implies that resident evil was ever actually scary, or ever took its core conceit in any way seriously past 1. 1 and 7 are the scary ones. They’re the ones with the least baggage, which makes it scarier because you don’t already know what you’re fighting. 7 completely ignoring the majority of the shit lore that came before it was the best decision it made.
7 and 8 should not have been resident evil games. should have been its own series with ethan as the protagonist
my only problem with 7 and 8 is that they seem to just keep introducing new characters to the resident evil story instead of bringing back some of the older ones like barry, moira, sheva, etc. ethans daughter is basically just a younger whinier version of sherry
