Why would they buy Square Enix, when Square Enix is already their cheap whore?

        Literally Square Enix.

To make Square a even cheaper whore.

Because they own a bunch of recognizable IP. That is what these companies care about at the moment, especially with the success of video game movies recently.

          They're gonna buy Square Enix

Y'all are idiots. SE already gives Sony all their biggest games. Sony's biggest gaming acquisition in the past few years is Bungie and that was their live service expertise. Playstation is making a huge push for GAAS games. If Sony are going for anyone, it would be MiHoYo.

            Anonymous

Mihoyo aren’t a public traded entity and China would never fucking allow it. Also Mihoyo made 5 billion last year in revenue, they are completely out of Sony’s price range.

              Anonymous

Not him but being publicly traded wouldn't matter, private companies can still be bought. But yeah, China doesn't allow foreigners to own domestic assets. And no, that's entirely different from being a shareholder before some schizo replies to me about some American company owning shares in a chink company.

            Anonymous

You’re the idiot thinking China would let a foreign company buy a company making a game that they have publicly called a great cultural export.

    >Kadokawa and Capcom
Both have massive shares hold up in the company family, so zero chance of a full buyout. Both are doing well so the families won't sell.
    >S-E
Sorta do-able, but the problem with S-E and Kadokawa in another sense is actually a monopoly on anime in some fashion. S-E, and obviously Kadokawa, have hands in manga, LN, anime etc and Sony having Aniplex, Funimation and CR already seems like it would cause issues. Like if Sony tied to buy Kadokawa, they would get manga magazines, LN companies, Yen Press etc and have a legit monopoly on moving Japanese manga/LNs/Anime to North American for instance.

As singular studios, not that many independent ones around these days from all the buyouts between Sony, Microsoft, Tencent and Embracer.

None. They can use that money for time exclusives. The best they can do is buy upcoming devs in the hopes that they struck gold or whoever isn't own yet like let's say Behaviour Interactive. Everyone says square enix but they have no reason since they can just buy time exclusively.

Reminder that Square Enix sold all their former Eidos studios and IPs for $300 million to Embracer so that they could invest in NFTs, while half a year later Embracer sold movie rights for Tomb Raider to Amazon for $600 million.

No. But it definitely wasn’t cheap either. Most reasonable estimates I saw were about $100 - $150m range. Still shows how bad Square is for selling it so cheaply.

Square is the most likely given the companies relationship. Outside of that, there really isn’t a good big company they could buy. Doubt they want Koei, Bamco or SEGA. Most of the western ones are too big. Ubisoft maybe??

Capcom would be the smartest choice given how well they are doing financially and in popular opinion now. Also they would get a lot of beloved and dormant IPs to make remakes or whatever retarded shit they want. Taking Monster Hunter from Nintendo would be the cherrybon top.

So they have 10 billion dollars in the bank, give or take, after spending a bunch on Bungie. They can also leverage debt and stock dilution which will balance out the multiplier effect where there's a premium placed on a buyout deal of the marketcap of the brought company in question. I will assume means they can get to that 10 billion dollar mark or a bit more. Square Enix is the most likely answer at 6 billion but it could be difficult to get. Konami seems the most likely where the company is technically worth more than Square Enix but their video game holdings are worth a fraction of that and they aren't doing anything so it would make sense they would want to acquire that. Really the only other company that make sense is Sega. Everyone else is either family controlled or has video games too close to their other expertise like Kadokawa and their books and manga alongside games and Bandai Namco and their toys and games.

So is Konami but you can always spin off the non-gaming part into another company as a subsidiary or not acquire that portion of it. You're never going to do it when gaming aligns very closely to their core interest with Kadokawa being into anime media in general and Bandai Namco being into toys.

Gaming part of Sega Sammy singlehandedly carried the company through the pandemic.
You're delusional if you think they're separating.

Again, nothing is stopping the first spinoff scenario, it'll just be more expensive for Sony.

Without Sega there won't be Sammy at this point.

                Anonymous

I'm not arguing about the importance of the company's divisions as is but how it could be if Sony really wanted the Sega part of the company really badly and the capability to do so. Again, it's not like it's impossible to do, it would just be more hassle, time and money required to actually do the deed.

                Anonymous

In any case, I find it near impossible.
Sega and Sammy merged specifically so both companies could coexist and pandemic proved them right and beyond Sonic I see no reason for Sony to be ever interested in Sega.
                >but Yakuza
It barely sells 1 million copies worldwide. Their PC gaming division with Total War and Football Manager is an actual money maker along with Project Sekai
