Found it odd that most 2D platformer games are now over 100 megabytes almost every time. I wonder why that is?

Everyone has 1TB+ harddrives now, so nobody really cares about conserving space.
Just like nobody really bothers optimizing for memory usage anymore. I open up some shitty Gamemaker turd made by a 14 year old and it eats up 600 MB of RAM. Why??

        >Everyone has 1TB+ harddrives now, so nobody really cares about conserving space
I have a 1TB harddrive and I'll still pass on downloading games if they're too large. If a game is above 25GB it needs to be the Citizen Kane of gaming for me to consider installing it

        >I open up some shitty Gamemaker turd made by a 14 year old and it eats up 600 MB of RAM. Why??
I was that turdmaker. The exact reason was because my 14 year old brain didn't grasp that memory was limited, so I made a shit ton of redundant shit and never even considered optimizing.
I never published the game my friend and I made, because the name wouldn't fly in the days of school shootings, despite the game just having cartoon orb "bullets" and overdramatic explosions (no gore at all). It was an arcade shooter where each player had to fight waves of all the other characters. We even put in one of our teachers with a powerup to run us all over with his motorcycle.

High quality audio, usually a decently sized soundtrack. We're not listening to 8 bit chiptunes any longer, it's all fat frickin' .wav or .ogg or .flac behemoths of filesize.

        Anonymous

I would think most games just use vorbis (ogg) audio since it can compress quite nicely without too much quality loss.
If you have a lot of audio files for music that can definitely add up and take up most of the space in terms of assets.
I wonder if using some midi like format would be smaller than just having whole audio files for music since you would only need audio for the instruments.

          Anonymous

          >vorbis

Fun fact, that's named after a Discworld character.

          https://wiki.lspace.org/Vorbis

          Anonymous

Oh absolutely it'd be smaller to use an internal tracker. At that point all you need is the sample library(allowing you to fit the instruments for every song into the same amount of space you'd have used on one or two full audio files, and the songs themselves wouldn't need to be more than ~200KB at most. The rub is that you have to build it all yourself. The reason why you get all this unoptimized shit is because everyone is using engines and frontends and whateverthefrick to speed up development time, at the cost of knowing anything at all about what's going on under the hood or having the ability to frick with it for efficiency.

Trade off between quality and speed of decompression.
When your fetching audio for a game from memory you can't wait 3 seconds for it to decompress.
Old games like Super Mario Bros used very few sounds because then they could keep everything they needed loaded.

which appears to be completely optimally compressed, as far as PNG compression levels go.

As for the QR code itself, that can be shrunk down to a fully functioning replica at 1/22th of the original size, just using nearest-neighbour sampling.
It was further optimised using pinga, a pretty handy PNG compression tool.

As the image itself has a high degree of entropy, compared to the huge chunks of solid color present in the SMB1 screenshot, it won't be as small in size despite being a lower resolution image.

Most games on the NES were 60 FPS. SNES had a majority there too. The better the grafix got the more compromises people made and the more the industry began to gaslight people with the "60 FPS is a meme" business. N64 was like 20 I believe. Now console standard is 30 FPS and they aren't really willing to budge on that because it would mean lowering graphics fidelity or having the consoles be more expensive to make. Switch is also trying to fit it all in a handheld so gets off even worse.

        Anonymous

Retro games running at 60 FPS is a by-product of targeting the 60hz refresh rate of NTSC displays.
For PAL displays running at 50hz, games would just run at 50 FPS, which often meant the games would actually be running about 20% slower. Not in terms of performance, but the actual timing. Only having to calculate 50 frames per second could however give PAL games a performance advantage.
You could occasionally get PAL optimised games, Super Metroid comes to mind, but many developers were often content to just let Europe enjoy slower games.

Even on NES you could get games that run at lower framerates, such as Elite, which pushes some very primitive 3D points and vertices, without actual polygons.

Cave Story fits into a 2 Mb swf file.

Yeah because the Windows executable is only 1.41 MB, and the data for it is just 2.01 MB.
Unfortunately it seems like the SWF version doesn't work if you run it on a desktop version of Flash Player.

This is really dope, but I don't think it's entirely practical for all music. Are these just songs people submit here, can I make my own? Really liked this one https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=33337

I sometimes have this autistic habit of converting bloated JPG's or PNG's into 4 or 8bit just to save on negligible file size
I feel like i'm doing a minor service for any web server that has to carry my image. the crisp pixels are also a bonus
