Found it odd that most 2D platformer games are now over 100 megabytes almost every time. I wonder why that is?
Everyone has 1TB+ harddrives now, so nobody really cares about conserving space.
Just like nobody really bothers optimizing for memory usage anymore. I open up some shitty Gamemaker turd made by a 14 year old and it eats up 600 MB of RAM. Why??
>Everyone has 1TB+ harddrives now, so nobody really cares about conserving space
I have a 1TB harddrive and I'll still pass on downloading games if they're too large. If a game is above 25GB it needs to be the Citizen Kane of gaming for me to consider installing it
>it needs to be the Citizen Kane of gaming
Is that better than the Bob Dylan of gaming?
Depends on which era of Bob Dylan we're talking about
>I open up some shitty Gamemaker turd made by a 14 year old and it eats up 600 MB of RAM. Why??
I was that turdmaker. The exact reason was because my 14 year old brain didn't grasp that memory was limited, so I made a shit ton of redundant shit and never even considered optimizing.
I never published the game my friend and I made, because the name wouldn't fly in the days of school shootings, despite the game just having cartoon orb "bullets" and overdramatic explosions (no gore at all). It was an arcade shooter where each player had to fight waves of all the other characters. We even put in one of our teachers with a powerup to run us all over with his motorcycle.
>Everyone has 1TB+ harddrives
Wow, everyone has enough space for at least 4 console games, and maybe an OS if they're lucky
>devs couldn't stop piracy
>so they make the games so big turd worlders can't get enough bandwidth to download a 50-80 gigabyte game
Prove this theory wrong
>>so they make the games so big turd worlders can't get enough bandwidth to download a 50-80 gigabyte game
High quality audio, usually a decently sized soundtrack. We're not listening to 8 bit chiptunes any longer, it's all fat frickin' .wav or .ogg or .flac behemoths of filesize.
I would think most games just use vorbis (ogg) audio since it can compress quite nicely without too much quality loss.
If you have a lot of audio files for music that can definitely add up and take up most of the space in terms of assets.
I wonder if using some midi like format would be smaller than just having whole audio files for music since you would only need audio for the instruments.
>vorbis
Fun fact, that's named after a Discworld character.
https://wiki.lspace.org/Vorbis
Oh absolutely it'd be smaller to use an internal tracker. At that point all you need is the sample library(allowing you to fit the instruments for every song into the same amount of space you'd have used on one or two full audio files, and the songs themselves wouldn't need to be more than ~200KB at most. The rub is that you have to build it all yourself. The reason why you get all this unoptimized shit is because everyone is using engines and frontends and whateverthefrick to speed up development time, at the cost of knowing anything at all about what's going on under the hood or having the ability to frick with it for efficiency.
Just get a better disk you fat frick
Its just a codec
>Vorbis
The current codec nowadays in opus, not vorbis.
why is audio so hard to optimize anyway
Very complex to create.
Trade off between quality and speed of decompression.
When your fetching audio for a game from memory you can't wait 3 seconds for it to decompress.
Old games like Super Mario Bros used very few sounds because then they could keep everything they needed loaded.
you can get orgasmic audio in kbs with module files (OpenMPT) but no one does it nowadays
spoonfeed me this
https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_top_favourites
click "play in online player" to play it the browser
holy shit
https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_player&query=70716
This is really dope, but I don't think it's entirely practical for all music. Are these just songs people submit here, can I make my own? Really liked this one https://modarchive.org/index.php?request=view_by_moduleid&query=33337
>Are these just songs people submit here, can I make my own
Yes and yes. OpenMPT is what most people use.
There is at least one game company I know of that uses these kinds of files for music, I think it's become a sort of forgotten technique due to the rise of DAW software that doesn't work with many of the formats modarchive keeps.
I bumped into a YouTube channel years ago that just played compilations of MOD music, and I was able to get the original files from here, even with modified dates going back to the 90s. Good times. It makes me sad that most people only think of older computer/game music being beeps and boops.
it is though hence the term CHIPTUNE
i really like this one
including the name

>DUDE COMPRESSION LMAO
I want high quality stuff not this
is literally a lossless screenshot what are you talking about
>lossless format
>lossy compression
I zoomed in on it, I don't see any loss of data.
Consider compressing yourself up my anus anon-senpai~~~
i need some visuals before i do
nes/snes/genesis games programmed in assembly with 2/4bpp graphics that use numbers fed into built in sound chips to play music rather than from files just don't take up much space, anon
Many 2D games these days are made using general purpose engines and high-level scripting languages like C#, Java, JavaScript and Python instead of bare metal assembly or C
game engines will have a gigantic runtime with code that will never be used and will use "generic" file types that will have overhead so the automated systems can read them.
It's also a psychological thing. Some people think smaller games are worse quality, so some developers artificially inflate their game's sizes because they think that makes their games "better".
>Found it odd that most 2D platformer games are now over 100 megabytes almost every time. I wonder why that is?
Those other platformers lack any form of cloudbush to save memory.
Could be reduced further by lowering the amount of colors to 8 bit.
These threads always turn into
>make a 1 byte image lmao
keep the color
I optimised the PNG compression further.
If Ganker supported webp I could post a 400 bytes version.
Here's that image as a QR code just copy-pasted from a text editor
I'd assume this would be even easier to make smaller given it's now black and white
Huh, yeah I was able to decode that, put the raw bytes into HxD, and save that as a PNG image. Neat.
And it exactly matches the contents of
which appears to be completely optimally compressed, as far as PNG compression levels go.
As for the QR code itself, that can be shrunk down to a fully functioning replica at 1/22th of the original size, just using nearest-neighbour sampling.
It was further optimised using pinga, a pretty handy PNG compression tool.
As the image itself has a high degree of entropy, compared to the huge chunks of solid color present in the SMB1 screenshot, it won't be as small in size despite being a lower resolution image.
SMALLER
trash
>30 bits
is it possible to learn this power
how
what
remember when this was a technique to crash other anons computer
ood imes
WHERE IS IT?
Opened in kuroba
(out of memory) a message came up
it's 30 fricking bytes
what's wrong with your phone
There is some frickery with the gif
It's 30 bytes that decompress to a few hundred megabytes in RAM
wait wtf
Photoshop said it's gonna be 88 bytes
ffs haven't lost in YEARS
K-chaw!
butthole
frick you i just lost
I don't get it
I'm guessing the joke is about people asking for source when it's on the filename
Careful, last time I made a THE GAME post jannies banned me for being off topic.
i lost the game
I just lost The Game!
And you did too.
holy shit, you morons actually did it
this is the first time i've ever seen this posted with a filesize of 283kb. my god
whoa
Mario if he sentient
>17seconds video
>174 kb
am noob, but seems impressive
ruins the joke but i got it lower (at the cost of quality)
alright, got it better
what the frick
you want to play the fps game? take this dickhead
It's not.. It's not shutting down..
Now make it 2.99 MB
>17 secs
>174kb
HOW
well I've seen images with bits for the first time in my life. If anything, I'm at least glad to have clicked in this thread for that.
How much would the improved run animation add to the size?
its 41KBs
>filename takes more data space than file
still bigger than the other gif
Well the system did all the work..the cartridge was just storage and a battery...
AT THE TIME IT WAS THE CUTTING EDGE OF TECHNOLOGY
I mean, it's a bad meme, since the small code is just instructions on how to draw the larger image.
It's like being amazed of a sub 1kb .bat that can fill your TB size PC with crap.
now make it take up negative kilobytes so that when I try to play it I gain room on my drive
has anyone made a version of this image with the actual rom embedded in it so you can change the extension to .nes and play it? I guess you probably wouldn't be able post it here though.
>people unironically argue that modern games aka games that run many complexities should be more smaller
Are you actual morons or what
Old bing bing wahooos take less space because its pixel shit
It's ironic you should call others morons because you're wrong, it's because they use the same assets over and over
not him but you're an idiot. modern games are guilty of reusing assets as well.
why did you argue with a guy who unironically said " more smaller"
why did you tag me gay. am i replying to the "more smaller" post?
you argued with the guy who argued with him
Let me get this straight. So it's not the reason of arguing with the guy who said "more smaller but you're arguing with me because I was arguing with a guy who arguing with the post "more smaller". did I get that right?
no im telling you its pointless to argue with those who prove themselves stupid i tell the same to those who argue with flat earthers
>pointless to argue
Black person i made 1 reply and you're such a hypocrite because you've literally made 3 posts about this pointless argument.
dumb moron
says the guy who would happily argue with someone on rather or not the earth is flat
No, bloat is real. Many cutting edge CAD/structural software weight less than 1GB. Meanwhile many pixel indie action plats are well over that.
nah is becaue they DGAF.
I remember I had an install of Half life 2 that weight less for some reason, maybe some language scrapped or whatever, despite it having my language not english)
This full install of Half life 2 did weight 2 GBs. Half life 2 isn't smaller than any AAA single player game, in fact its a long game with a 20hour long something campaign.
2 GBs !
>despite it having my language not englis
Brown moment
Just because games got bigger does not mean optimisation and compression techniques are not use
>4K
>High quality textures
>texture twice as big
>game size 50 times bigger
I dont believe it.
why do games not give an option to not download 8k textures and destroy my drive
I didnt ask
>download
>try to run
>crashes after finishing loading
fricking windows 10
Works for me and I'm on also Windows 10. It freezes when I tab out though. And while it doesn't show on the screenshot, there are massive black bars on all sides of the picture.
i put it into visual studio to find why it was crashing and now the game works fine
the windows experience
Everything is bloated
Tfw SMB is from the fricking 1985 and it was 60fps, yet these day every other gay released on the Shitch can barely hold 20fps and morons are defending it
>b-b-b-b-b-ut its fun!
no its fricking dogshit
half of these games can be only enjoyed on emu
Meds
Most games on the NES were 60 FPS. SNES had a majority there too. The better the grafix got the more compromises people made and the more the industry began to gaslight people with the "60 FPS is a meme" business. N64 was like 20 I believe. Now console standard is 30 FPS and they aren't really willing to budge on that because it would mean lowering graphics fidelity or having the consoles be more expensive to make. Switch is also trying to fit it all in a handheld so gets off even worse.
Retro games running at 60 FPS is a by-product of targeting the 60hz refresh rate of NTSC displays.
For PAL displays running at 50hz, games would just run at 50 FPS, which often meant the games would actually be running about 20% slower. Not in terms of performance, but the actual timing. Only having to calculate 50 frames per second could however give PAL games a performance advantage.
You could occasionally get PAL optimised games, Super Metroid comes to mind, but many developers were often content to just let Europe enjoy slower games.
Even on NES you could get games that run at lower framerates, such as Elite, which pushes some very primitive 3D points and vertices, without actual polygons.
>gregor has joined the servor
Mario if he chink
mario if he meal
Good one
Super Marioach
Please no mama-meat touching, ma'am!
Very Kamekesque
Cave Story fits into a 2 Mb swf file.
Yeah because the Windows executable is only 1.41 MB, and the data for it is just 2.01 MB.
Unfortunately it seems like the SWF version doesn't work if you run it on a desktop version of Flash Player.
if optimization is so easy why do none of you do it
>a single png

YAWN
By the way, this demo from the same group blew my mind 20 years ago:

Do you think God could make a jpg so big that even he couldn't render it?
optimized it further
Mario if he sunset
looks fricking awesome
Good OC, anon. Have another (you)
I sometimes have this autistic habit of converting bloated JPG's or PNG's into 4 or 8bit just to save on negligible file size
I feel like i'm doing a minor service for any web server that has to carry my image. the crisp pixels are also a bonus
For me, it's inflation.
No, THIS really makes you think
ACE exploits are some crazy shit. It's like you find the kernel of the universe and completely bend it to your will as you achieve Godhood
test
Can you make the whole game in a WEBM?? Techlet here
Anon, it's a fricking video codec.
too much quality
