I bought it and played about 20 hours (my country has a 3 day refund guarantee obligated by law so I returned it) and I didn't enjoy it much. The story is stupider than Remake, the game looks objectively worse but most damning of all is that it's SO FRICKING PADDED NOW. Everything feels like it takes a million years, thank to the "over cinematic feel" the game is so clearly going for. Conversations were legitimately faster on the PS1 with blue text boxes.
I wanted to make some funny webms of the stupider parts like Dyne's death scene or the Black Materia slapstick routine but everything is just bloated to frick. Even the webm of Aerith's death cuts several minutes of Cloud wading through a sea of time jannies and then posing like he's going to strike her down leading up to it.
Yeah, fricking look at how long this shit takes (big spoiler for the end of the game by the way).
I swear the textboxes, the raising of the sword and the Sephiroth-descending cutscene took half the time in the original.
Remake ends with the party defeating the time jannies, and the creation of a timeline where Zack doesn't die. Everyone thought this was giving Rebrith a free pass to go off the rails. And then it turns out the time jannies aren't gone, and nothing is significantly different.

I'm 30 hours in, and I'm not enjoying it. It's basically an open world ubisoft game with some Final Fantasy VII fan fiction sprinkled in. It's also way too long to be a remake of the second half of disc 1.

People say shit like "disc 3 is only the final dungeon," but Cloud's flashback was half an hour and they bloated that out into a 40-hour game just to give his fricking sword a backstory.
Disc 2 is a lot shorter than Disc 1. You also have way more FMVs on Disc 2 & 3, and in 1997 that was where the majority of the disc space went (which is why FF8/FF9 feel way shorter than 7 despite being 4 discs).
They were almost able to fit Disc 2 and 3 on a single disc at the time, even with the FMVs. It just barely went over the limit, so the finale got shunted to a final disc.
dont be fooled final fantasy 7 disks were mostly just uncompressed FMVs, the actual game can fit on a normal 1997 cd rom, it was literally just a marketing move to make it 3 discs to seem "the biggest most hugest game ever made in the history of mankind!"

i'm about 25 hours in and I'm enjoying it but it is extremely padded.
I play without activating the towers and I generally have a more fun time that way.
I also really like minigames so its basically a great game for me but if I didn't I think I'd be trashing this game pretty soon. I also didn't care at all for the remake story changes so anything that happens in the story I don't really care about.

I remember when I first watched it was frightened, it looked demonic, but when the camera panned away I felt kinda bad for it, it didn't chose to be like this and is in obvious agony, writhing on the floor. A lot of complex emotions are portrayed in this little cutscene.
This and so many little details that make the original special have been lost, and for what? Debirth is a husk, a skinsuit full of rotten guts and there's no hiding it.

I disagree with most of your post, but since I kinda agree with you on your last point about the Ubislop open world, I'll share an opinion with you: I suspect that it's done as some weird contrast to XV. In that game you had a ton of sidequests available to you from the word go, BUT if you did even half of those available before the boat-timeskip then you'd be criminally over-leveled. The game kept giving you more and more quests and I personally didn't even realize I was 8 levels above the current story-boss until I decided I was tired of questing. In XV you broke the game almost immediately if you were quest-happy, so maybe the ambition was to go the other way with it in 7R?
To me it comes across as lazy balancing either way, because if you almost HAVE to do it, then it isn't optional and you might as well make it mandatory, but if doing it punishes you by making you overpowered, why have it in at all?
JRPG devs should take note from Monolithsoft if they want to implement a lot of side content, where combat xp scales depending on how much lower or higher the enemy's level is, and any quest reward xp gets stored for you to use as you please. That way you can design the game around the assumption of a player doing just some side content, and if they want to go in underleveled or overleveled they can choose to do so, regardless if they do everything available
It feels like the natural evolution of FFXV's system, which would initially bank the xp but still you'd just get it all at once.when you rested.
I have more issues with the materia slots being few even after two days playing and the grow being so slow with high ap requirements and crappy pa you get by killing monsters and bosses

I don't mind the open world. The map size is in the middle of not being too small and not being overly large like say AC Odyssey. All the side quests have a character take front with Cloud and have fun dialog and probably some one-off minigame like mushroom picking.

The story is stupider than Remake, the game looks objectively worse but most damning of all is that it's SO FRICKING PADDED NOW. Everything feels like it takes a million years, thank to the "over cinematic feel" the game is so clearly going for. Conversations were legitimately faster on the PS1 with blue text boxes.
I wanted to make some funny webms of the stupider parts like Dyne's death scene or the Black Materia slapstick routine but everything is just bloated to frick. Even the webm of Aerith's death cuts several minutes of Cloud wading through a sea of time jannies and then posing like he's going to strike her down leading up to it.

Disc 2 is a lot shorter than Disc 1. You also have way more FMVs on Disc 2 & 3, and in 1997 that was where the majority of the disc space went (which is why FF8/FF9 feel way shorter than 7 despite being 4 discs).
They were almost able to fit Disc 2 and 3 on a single disc at the time, even with the FMVs. It just barely went over the limit, so the finale got shunted to a final disc.

I bought Remake on launch and that was a massive mistake given how it turned out + it ended up going on sale constantly and being given out on PS+ anyway, there plenty of good shit either out or coming out so I don’t see the rush to buy an inherently incomplete product which seems to just continuing the trend of butchering FF7 anyway.

I disagree with most of your post, but since I kinda agree with you on your last point about the Ubislop open world, I'll share an opinion with you: I suspect that it's done as some weird contrast to XV. In that game you had a ton of sidequests available to you from the word go, BUT if you did even half of those available before the boat-timeskip then you'd be criminally over-leveled. The game kept giving you more and more quests and I personally didn't even realize I was 8 levels above the current story-boss until I decided I was tired of questing. In XV you broke the game almost immediately if you were quest-happy, so maybe the ambition was to go the other way with it in 7R?
To me it comes across as lazy balancing either way, because if you almost HAVE to do it, then it isn't optional and you might as well make it mandatory, but if doing it punishes you by making you overpowered, why have it in at all?
JRPG devs should take note from Monolithsoft if they want to implement a lot of side content, where combat xp scales depending on how much lower or higher the enemy's level is, and any quest reward xp gets stored for you to use as you please. That way you can design the game around the assumption of a player doing just some side content, and if they want to go in underleveled or overleveled they can choose to do so, regardless if they do everything available
It feels like the natural evolution of FFXV's system, which would initially bank the xp but still you'd just get it all at once.when you rested.
I have more issues with the materia slots being few even after two days playing and the grow being so slow with high ap requirements and crappy pa you get by killing monsters and bosses

I don't mind the open world. The map size is in the middle of not being too small and not being overly large like say AC Odyssey. All the side quests have a character take front with Cloud and have fun dialog and probably some one-off minigame like mushroom picking.

But yea my problem with the open world aren't the side quests or the special regional questlines (though the 3rd one with the cacturns sucks, but the first two are great) but everything else, from the towers to the combat requests to the little mako springs.
I liked the summon crystals at first when I went into the area for titan and the ost feels like a remix of the main theme of XVI and thought they were going to have some special soundtrack for each summon, but then you realize that every single one of the divinity areas has the same song

FF16 had good spectacle but werent't fun to fight, because 16's combat is deeply flawed. Halfway to a good action game, but not even halfway to a good RPG. Cooldowns have no reason to exist.

i disagree its possible to make it kino but the main story i woudlnt like to take place on the overworld, the post-game yes consider it like a free dlc extra content.
main game should be metroidvania and i know how to make it fun. its difficult to explain but basically FF characters (new cast) use the movement abilities present in FF: float, stop, haste, slow, dragoon's jump to traverse the interconnected dungeons, etc.

That is why games like Palworld and Hell Divers 2 to some extent took off as well as they did. They aren't asking $120 dollars for the price of entry let alone getting bogged down in the weeds or constant bullshit that seems to come with every AAA release these days. The mere concept of making an actual game that is fun while not busting your balls for cash every step of the way seems to be a completely alien mindset at this point.

It's not too uncommon for a sequel to sell less than the previous entry, but I imagine Square Enix once again might have had unrealistic expectations.
They're desperate to convince people otherwise but obviously it gets harder and harder to claim you don't need to play anything the more games you release. The problem is that they also can't help themselves. You'll see influencers claim you need to play phone games and Crisis Core because those are recent Square releases but you don't need to play the original FF7, the foundation of literally everything in these games and something that these new ones are actively playing with your expectations for playing, because it is not a recent Square release.
People realized they can just wait for the last installment instead of buying 1/3 of a game at a time.

Being able to finish a fight by just holding one button, but it takes e.g. 5 minutes, whereas skilled combat takes <30s isn't inherently bad, imo.
You could also show off turn-based FFs by every character just spamming attack for many normal fights.
That being said, the move away from turn-based is exactly what made me lose all interest I've had in the remake. I have no intention to ever playing any of these.
