New players unfamiliar with the franchise have no clue what the frick is going on at any point in time.
The new player experience is appalling, and many old players proclaimed the game dead upon Shadowlands. Who is left to play it? Me because I love Pandaren too much to quit.

Why?
It's legit just the absolute disaster of so many expansions previous. WoD content drought and content cancellations put a sour taste in people's mouths. Legion had a pretty rough start with artifact power and the legendary system. It got better later, but the start of the expansion is when the most amount of players are going to be there so they failed to retain a good chunk of the playerbase. BFA came off the success of arguably one of the best periods in wow yet once again the beginning was absolutely abysmal and slowly got worse until they hit a hail mary at the end of the xpac that was still divisive in the community. And then there was shadowlands, an irredeemable dump that hemorrhaged players. Filled with the most amount of hate for any expansion on all fronts.
So, it's only natural dragonflight started out with cripplingly low player counts compared to other starts. At least based on the same metrics we used to calculate previous xpacs and patches since Blizzard is too scared to release data. With low player counts means higher queue times and search times when going through group finder. With each new patch you lose even more players as patches always trend downwards in player count. Somehow they decide to release a system in the 2nd raid tier that lets everyone fully gear to beginner mythic ilvl in the first week of m+/raid launch, fully shitting on the gear treadmill meme which is the only thing retaining players ironically enough. So, now everyone is giga geared really fast and if they have no obligation to mythic raid or push m+ content then they just leave within the next couple weeks. This patch for sure bled out another solid chunk of players. It's absolutely abysmal trying to find healers right now for any level of content, and that will only add to people's frustrations.
covid ended, they finally ran out of good will after shadowlands and the game is too old to attract new players. it will continue to bleed players and blizzard will be forced to further monetize the game which will bleed even more players until eventually its bled completely dry and the servers get shutdown.

Vanilla/TBC/WOTLK are the only good versions of WoW, everything else is tainted by Activision
The past few expacs of retail have just been endless gear treadmills with Diablo-styled "endless grind" progression and a bunch of terribly designed systems
Knowing that the gear I'm getting now will be immediately obsoleted as soon as the next content patch comes out makes me not want to play. When I played Shittolands, all I did was clear the current raid on Heroic and then unsub while waiting for the next raid.

On the technical side of things its massively better than shadowlands. So it feels more like the game finally managed to get it's poor design functional, leaving a functional but boring expansion.
One thing that feels bad, is that the dragon-riding is very well done, it's feels good to move. However as an MMO it makes the world feel smaller and you don't engage with players naturally still, since you que for all content anywhere.
Honestly the one giant problem I think the game has, is that knowing the next patch deletes your gear nukes the motivation to play.

If you're going to play nuWoW, the best way to do it is just waiting until the final content patch so you can experience all the content with the grindy time-gating removed, and just get everything done within a single month sub period. There's no point in endlessly grinding on the gear treadmill unless you're a sweatgay trying to compete for parses or something
It's one of the things I love about vanilla: The gear "progression" is all over the place. Random quest items are super good even at endgame, and new raids don't necessarily invalidate your current gear. You can get items from Molten Core that will last you all the way to Naxx. There are quest items that will last you like 15 levels due to the weird stat distribution being really good, like those agi legs from the gnomer quest.
Of course, the downside of this is that tons of items are just useless crap that get insta-disenchanted, or for quest items, insta-vendored. So many agi/spirit pieces....

Shadowlands destroyed the games lore and story in a way that it can’t be fixed.
For instance, early on in the DF story you get that dragonoid quest giver that dies tragically and you are supposed to feel sad….except why would you when we know literal God and can pop over to the Afterlife and put in a good word for them?
In vanilla, and to some extent TBC and WotLK too, most of the experience was in levelling up in the WORLD of Warcraft. Endgame felt more like a hidden bonus, the raids were hidden behind a bunch of obscure as shit attunement quests and everything.
Now you do levelling in like 15 hours. As soon as you hit max you get bombarded with a bunch of gimmicky bullshit for getting better gear in the open world, but the quickest and fastest solution is always to just open up the dungeon finder to queue for dungeons or find a raid until the next patch comes out and resets everything.
The closest things to an MMO I've played are Spiral Knights and Warframe, and WoW doesn't look interesting enough to be worth the time and money sink.
