Dont get me wrong I thought masquerading was a great idea. Summoning demons too, interweaving buffering their attacks and Bayonetta with the staple combat was a great idea.
The weapons are weak and her new pistol set's attack kit lead to really weird angle bullet arts. Better than 2 for sure as some of the attacks were very fun to bullet art on.
Lazor beast and abracadabra are the most fun weapons (sometimes the whip)
The fan was a slightly tweaked rakasha and as much as I wanted libido to work it just isn't as strong. Yo-yos were actually useful on NSIC but a bit repetitive.
All in all I feel the biggest problem with the game was removing arm/leg weapon mixes. However I understand that the direction they ended up going couldnt allow for it.

From what I've heard, the game didn't really flop. The initial sales were great but slowed down considerably.

Turning shotgun hike and air race cancels into the modern jump-cancels that completely open up the combo system, people loved multiple weapons with different timings and move sets. Itsuno expanded that, even dmc4 itsuno learned people didn’t like the puzzles and re elements anymore, they complained about it in 4 so he streamlined it in 5. Same thing with Nero’s changed exceed and breakers. Results of direct feedback from players x
In bayonetta 1 we see all the things that itsuno learned not to do appear. Fps, minigames, motorcycle selections, fricking afterburner again. The things people loved? Because KAMIYA likes them. Not the audience. Bayonetta’s inability to compete with dmc in terms of sales and popularity is purely down to kamiya’s inability to take feedback. Bayonetta was set up to succeed in regards to marketing, in regards to hype, in regards to platform and budget at the time. Bayonetta and Luka interact with each other exactly twice throughout the entire game, and then Bayonetta falls head over heels for him out of nowhere, and then they kiss. Also it's implied that they're bound together by fate or some dumb shit like that, and it just feels really forced.
Besides, their relationship always felt one-sided. Bayonetta doesn't really care about Luka. There is not a single strong emotional moment between them at all in the series.
Bayonetta should've just ended up with Jeanne. It makes more sense given Bayonetta 2's entire plot.

3 hit 1M sales way faster than 1 or 2 did on a single platform. It's not the best one but it's easily the most successful sales wise (but I imagine it didn't make a ton of profit due to the long dev cycle). It's Origins that flopped but that doesn't really have any bearing on the IP outside of not making more spinoffs, which is a shame because Origins is really great.
Every single Bayo game sits between a 7.5 & 8.5 out of 10, not bad when DMC & NG have at least one shit game apiece (though their peaks are excellent).

Not sure what it was, but as a fan of 1 and 2 I didn't care enough to even buy 3.
I've tried to get into Bayo multiple times becaus everyone says "dude, if you love DMC, you'll love Bayonetta".....but I just don't. They're just weirdly maximalist games with a bad case of throwing everything against the wall until it sticks. The visual design is a mess (though it looks better in 3 despite weak graphics/renders), there's too many dogshit minigames that will ruin your score, enemies are relatively hard to read, and the whole world and story is a convoluted nightmare of time travel and flashbacks and alternate timelines and layers of reality.
I don't begrudge anyone who likes them, but for me there are just too many flaws with each one to convince myself that they're good games overall. And I guess it goes to show that DMC as a series isn't JUST combos.

Took me forever to finish 1, once I got stuck on the last couple levels, I dropped the difficulty from normal to easy just to finish the game and start 2, telling myself I'd go back and finish it properly some day. I never have.
2 was easier, I managed to finish it on Normal.
I really like Bayo. I looked into trying to buy a fig of her, but they're either too expensive or kinda crummy. I played her a ton in Smash 4, and tried to play her in Ult but they fricking destroyed her.
And I bought 3 ready to enjoy it, but once I learned about the ending, it seriously killed my interest in the series. The idea that the main cast is dead and Viola takes over didn't land with me at all. I don't hate Viola, but I REALLY LIKE Bayo, and the idea that she got relagated to side character after only 3 games is nuts.
As for Origins, well, I do really like the idea, I just...keep buying all sorts of games and not finishing them. I still haven't finished TotK.
