It wouldn't have been a problem if this stuff was NG+ exclusive. Imagine them making the entire original game faithful to the ps1 title, and then the time jannies and subversions come in on a subsequent playthrough. Would've had a slam dunk of a game.

That would mean they'd basically have to make 2 games in 1. We are talking about the company that has decided to sell you a single game in 3 parts to even bother to making it at all

      Anonymous

It's a "resequel". People made predictions for years about how Rebirth would supposedly now completely disregard the OG and go in a completely different direction with nothing being the same anymore in the slightest, basically a brand new game that's FFVII in name only. After the most recent trailer you don't see anyone make that claim anymore. Now they'll crawl back into their holes and pretend that their outlandish claims either never happened or that they were just shitposting all along.

are you moronic, they've explicitly confirmed it's a new scenario about sephiroth merging universes

          Anonymous

That's just the "sequel" part in "resequel". What people have been insisting on, however, was that the "re-" part is, in turn, invalidated, but we have not seen anything like that yet. Rufus parade still happens, going to Costa del Sol still happens, riding the gondola to Gold Saucer still happens. The Bottomswell boss encounter has been slightly reimagined but still shows pretty much all the elements from the OG so far.
People were unironically claiming that weird shit would happen like never going to Junon, but instead just going through random new locations or compilation locations, as in the OG story being completely dropped and nowhere to be found.

I wanted the same game with upgrade and fixes. I got a different game that tried to be the game I wanted and paled at every chance

Yeah that's what a remake is, it means to remake it and that can mean strictly following the original source material or taking as many artistic liberties as you want.

That being said, this game felt more linear than the original Midgar some fricking how lol. Must be something to do with stretching it out unnecessarily into its own game. But I got bad FF13 vibes from most of this game's "level design" (or lack thereof)

      >it means to remake it and that can mean strictly following the original source material or taking as many artistic liberties as you want.
It's exactly not taking any "artistic" liberties; remakes aren't made for newer audiences, they're attracted from the success and attention of the older audience gathering around it. In a remake, a real remake, the "artistic liberties" stop at adding new minimal stuff not present on the original without affecting the game's core.

A few months ago I made a prediction. Which was that most of the haters who constantly shit on FFVIIR and claim that they'll never play Rebirth or part 3 will instantly 180° the moment a trailer drops that shows Red XIII dancing in sailor uniform. It did not even have to happen, instead we "merely" got Red XIII riding a Chocobo, but the effect I was mentioning is already starting to show itself.
Any FFVIIR threads that are barryless (is he on vacation or something? Haven't seen him the last few days) and even those with him present are now much more genuinely positive than they have been previously and anyone who tries to shitpost about it negatively just looks like a clown because they just don't seem to have any ammo for criticism at this point, considering that many concerns that had been present in Remake seem to have been remedied by Rebirth.

      Anonymous

It's interesting that the things people are excited about in Rebirth are just faithful recreations of things from the original game. I think it speaks volumes as to what people actually want from this series of games.

        Anonymous

But Red XIII riding a Chocobo is not in the OG. That shows that it's not about a "faithful recreation" but rather about being "faithful to the spirit of the original" instead. The remake already succeeded at that as well. The true reason why people were so repulsed by the jannies was just that they instantly assumed the worst would come from the implication of that whole "unknown journey" that would follow afterwards.
All those mass-hysteria predictions about how unlike Remake which had the timejannies to "keep things close to the original albeit by force" would no longer be present and therefore immediately completely and utterly deviate from any events of the OG, it was basically just paranoia about part 2 and part 3.

But so far SE has shown that Rebirth actually seems faithful to the original story and spirit for the most part, while at least for now Zack being alive was railroaded into a separate timeline and thus won't have any immediate effect on the Remake storyline. Now people have cognitive dissonance from Rebirth actually defying the negative expectations and not being the diverging disaster they predicted, causing many to be moderately hyped for the trilogy again.

...I even suspect that SE planned this from the start. It's for all intents and purposes "emotional manipulation" against the audience. But I can't help but praise it from a purely marketing perspective. SE actually realized the hidden deathtrap of this remake trilogy, same as many other very hyped projects had, which is "hype inflation", wherein a game gets so massively hyped up to the heavens and beyond that it becomes humanly impossible to ever fulfill, much less exceed those expectations, so they took the daring gamble of smothering the inflated expectations via the Remake ending that left many with rather mixed feelings, so now they can reignite the hype at a more reasonable level. Whether that ploy manages to succeed or not remains to be seen.
