Bottom right doesn't look soulful but the top half does.
Bottom left is such a generic scene and yet it has so much character.

They squeezed Pokémon diarrhea into a Nintendo Cardridge and sold it as a Mystery Dungeon remake.
The real reason is modern displays are faulty and always result in burn in if you use high contrast.
Entire sectors of game design have regressed terribly because we moved to inferior screen displays as a people.
They wanted to make it look like the promo art. You would know this if you actually played the origjnal game

They do that in high school art class and sometimes in college art classes. It's said to stop people from mixing black and other colors to create shade without adding other pigments to make it look more natural but a lot of people apply it to cartoon drawing too unfortunately. It can work, but you need to really hone that skill.

the GBA had a notoriously terrible soundchip, so a lot of devs with split GBA/DS versions of their games had to neuter the soundtrack for the GBA version

God, please take me back. Playing Sapphire with my friends was the last time I can remember being truly happy.
The GBA soundtrack is more crunchy and retro cause of the system. DS version uses better samples and I think the game is zoomed out some too?
I know explorers has more depth and content but something about the pure sovl of adventure team can't be beat for me
Now compare the cutscene where you fight Alakazam's rescue team with Absol before meeting Ninetails and how it is sprites bumping against each other vs. a fully choreographed battle.
This and the sequel are the definition of a 6/10 game that feels like a 9/10.
