Yeah. But like most fan theories it falls apart under the slightest scrutiny.

It actually doesn't. They even make a point of showing that Shepard came in close contact with a Reaper artifact that indoctrinated scientists in the ME2 Arrival DLC that was sold as a setup for ME3. I think at least one of the writers originally intended for indoctrination to be a major part of the ending.

You do realize you can import a save from ME2 where you didn't complete Arrival and instead a random Alliance strike team takes Shephard's place, right?

Crazy how frickjng bad Mass Effect 3 and Final Fantasy 8 were to make their fanbases go delusional and call the creators of the game wrong on the stories they wrote.
It's a bad ending, that's all there is to it. Making up theories and discussing them is fine but stop treating them as anything more than fan theories and interesting "what if" scenarios. That's just what they are.

Not really related to what you said, but I just started another modded playhthrough of the trilogy and I'm using the Children of Rannoch mod and it has made me ponder. It's a fan mod, but it's so good and such a cool improvement on the base game (based on concept art apparently) that I actually think they should adopt this look or something similar for Quarians going forward. I wonder if we will ever see this in the future, fan made ideas being adopted into the canon of a series?

There are so many mods for ME3, that it basically goes 3/4 into what the game should have been like on release. But we're still not where the game should have been.
Even then, the games are unbearably old. Baldur's Gate honestly feels and plays better, because it doesn't try to do what Mass Effect does.

                You do understand that, right?
                That's not even an argument.
Also, a lot of good franchises that have been around for a long time, whose original creators have moved on, and have had actual fans come in and work on those franchises, are the ones that actively thrived.
Otherwise, you get shit like TLoU2 and whatever the frick happened to Halo.
Or you get the old blood going woke. Like Bioware over the past 10 years.

from what I recall something along that line was the intended reason for why the reapers culled life every once in a while to keep a stable level of dark energy, but at some point it got changed to the current robot revolt shit

        >use too much = universe expands until Big Rip
        >use too little = universe contracts into Big Crunchy
        >manage energy usage = universe reaches equilibrium

no it wasn't to cull life to keep stable energy, it was rather that the Reapers farmed new civilizations for new insights to assimilate into their collective knowledge in order to try and fix the dark matter problem

It's why they have set up the galaxy with mass relays and the citadel trap, they accelerate the advancement of newly space-faring civilizations, encourage cooperation between them and then harvest them in the hopes one of them managed to get a fresh perspective they hadn't considered

          Anonymous

I wouldn't explain why the Reapers do what they do. Just say they're expanding their hivemind every time they eat a civilization. This also creates extra stakes because failure means the next cycle will have to face an even stronger version of the Reapers if the current cycle fails.

Shepard not having been indoctrinated after encountering so many reaper artifacts, even being inside one, is colossally stupid and it would've been nice to have that payoff later but at no point is it ever hinted at or shown that Shepard was being mind controlled and all that stuff about the kid and those stupid dreams were just really bad attempts at pathos by the hack writers.

After the last game had you fighting a moronic giant with 3 eyes someone on the dev team had the sense to pushback against including another god awful final boss. But I will never forget the brave soul who stood up when others stood back.

This. People didn't want to believe it was that bad there HAD to be something they were missing. 3 hour long theory videos with 'evidence' being a character scratching their nose had millions of views and getting picked up by all the gaming outlets. To the point that openly denying it became the heretical stance for a time.
It's an actual mass cope and would probably make a good subject to study to understand sociology. As far as I know there's been nothing quite like before or since.

You certainly can use launch content as a valid criticism. That's the game we were sold. Also, the Citadel DLC doesn't make the ending good. It just sucks slightly less. 3 is a mess all the way through, with a few good story beats (that were in DLC, not the base game) and good combat, but just pure tedium.

Launch content as the basis behind your enjoyment of a game 12 years later makes no sense. It made sense back then, yes, but it's not relevant anymore for someone picking up the game for the first time or someone doing a re-play nowadays. Which is what I'm talking about.

The Citadel dlc doesn't solve any of the fundamental problems that 3's story has, it is quite literally a detour from the main plot. It's a fine enough detour mind you since it actually gives you more moments with the characters everyone loves but it's still a detour nonetheless.

    >Didn't fall for the Mass Effect hype
    >Knew about its plans as they surfaced from the first and its subsequent anti-climatic finish with the third

so how big was the bullet I dodged?

The first three games are still a worthwhile experience, regardless of the ending and the degradation from 1 to 3. The characters, world, lore, species, politics, its all fun stuff. Brings me back to my TNG days.

the best part was the multiplayer
was there a free demo or something? because I pirated ME3 but remembered enjoying those missions.
    also, jack got nice characterization
but everything to do with the kid sucked
you would have that shitty dream sequence of everyone who died where you were forced to walk, and if nobody died it'd just be an extended waste of time.

even if it was true, it was poorly conveyed and executed and just cope from fans trying to make the trash they were given and years invested somehow relevant.

I do and it's one of the worst cases of a theory looking for evidence than evidence supporting the growth a theory

if mass effect 3 came out today the devs would use it as a scapegoat and say gamers misundertood their "masterpiece"

      Bro.
      That literally happened in 2012.

no the indoctrination theory was made by fans, what I mean is that if it came out today the devs would claim indoctrination was totally what they meant all along and that most people getting angry at the ending misunderstood their genius

yeah that actually did happen, like the other anon said. that was one of the earlier instances I can think of where game journos were widely shaming fans for not liking new thing, as well, along with Zelda Skyward Sword and Metroid Other M.

The true irony was that Bioware were indoctrinated instead

shame the story was moronic because I actually thought ME3's gameplay was by far the best in the series. playing vanguard and just using only the carnifex so your powers regenerated instantly was fun as frick.
