It was a trailer to announce a crossover between SMT and FE, so they showed the characters, since what else is more inconic than that? You wanted them to do a trailer with what, two logos?
The game went through many iterations before it became Tokyo Mirage Sessions, so the concept wasn't even clear when they showed this announcment trailer.

It's Persona because..? it has colors? Ever played Devil Survivor? Or even Strange Journey? SMT can have colourful worlds and always light hearted humour with demon conversations.

It's a niche product. The population this game would have appealed to tend to be staunchly anti-censorship. The game ended up having neither mainstream appeal nor niche appeal. They screwed themselves on both ends.

They ported the censored Wii U version from NA to the Switch. Even Japan got the censored version for some reason. Considering this is already an extremely niche product that appeals to a niche crowd, pissing them off just makes the product appeal to nobody.

According to some interviews, Atlus had wanted to make an "Idol-themed JRPG" for a while, and Nintendo wanted in on the Persona bandwagon.

            Anonymous

So nintendo wanted this shit? Or they were desperate for anything persona?
Well they suffered until recently thats for sure.
The only thing TMS represents in the spirit of both SMT(persona) and FE is that it was the power of waifus attracting virgin losers to put both franchises on the map, much like irl idol girls do

              Anonymous

Nintendo wanted "whatever persona has" without understanding what that was, so they gave Atlus access to their Fire Emblem IP, who then proceeded to use it as a pantheon similar to how each Persona game has a pantheon for its main characters.

And being honest, TMS is a pretty good "Idol-themed JRPG". It has a lot of little touches to its menus and combat system that really sells it.
It's just a damn fricking shame that it was advertised as SMT x FE. And it was released during Treehouse's censorship reign. And it was released originally on the failed Wii U. And its re-release was marred with Atlus's usual incompetence ruining its second chance. Poor game is a fricking comedy of errors.

The rerelease was done so terribly that Fire Emblem Heroes has never run a second TMS banner, despite it having enough content for two banners and a seasonal banner or two.
Hell, I want Idol/Magical Girl banners. Just not of the TMS characters.

IS was supposed to collaborate as well, but Atlus was in shambles at the time and Nintendo pulled back from the project. Same thing happened when Atlus contacted some rhythm game devs for Persona dancing, they eventually ruined that partnership and made it themselves since it had already been publicly announced.
Meanwhile they took the funding from Nintendo and used it on P5, their ticket out of the hell they were in. They replaced that with an agreement with Avex to shill their talent, and duct-taped up a scrapped Vita RPG to half-assedly run on the Wii U. Remember this was supposed to built exclusively for Wii U, yet battles could have loading screens nearly ten seconds long, and even the pause menu had to load.
Slap some Fire Emblem character names on Persona design rejects that had absolutely dick similarity to those characters to fulfill the crossover aspect and voila. The baffling self-censorship choices, I dunno what the frick they were thinking there though.

It was a linear turn-based jrpg allegedly designed for the Wii U alone. Xenblade X would let you fast travel to a different continent, even without the hard drive install data, faster than TMS could load a fight against a generic enemy.

What people claim they wanted (they didn't actually want at all)
    >A complete dogshit nonsense direct cross over game like Project X Zone that was 100% guaranteed to be dog shit terrible
What people ACTUALLY wanted at the time:
    >SMT fans just wanted SMTV with some faceless npc called Marth in some dark corner of the game that just dies the instant you talk to him
    >FE fans just wanted FE14 where instead of the typical zombie like enemies they just use the Ghoul demon from SMT and that's it

Anyone who claims otherwise is fricking pathological liar, absolutely no one in existence actually wanted a legitimate cross over as there's no real overlap between those to games and their fan bases.
