Repackaged old shit from 1986 that was cheap to release here. We did also get the second Super Chinese game which was at least still fresh. Didn't get SC3 though.

how similar was it to picrel? i loved renting this game with my brother even though it was pure kusoge

How is it kusoge? I always found it to be a genuinely fun game and not in a "haha I can't wait to see what lame thing will happen next" type way. My only complaint is the total randomness of the RPG boss battles and how you can only win for sure if you cheese them with the freeze spell.

combat is the definition of jank

It's nothing but a better version of the top-down action scenes from that game, plus a few bonus stages. It's less janky than those scenes are in the sequel, but still pretty janky. I somehow like it a lot despite its severe limitations and (arguable) crappiness.

Knew someone who was obsessed with this game somehow. Last I heard of him, he went to Afghan. Wonder if he made it.
Dammit, I forgot his name, couldn't look him up if I tried...

Culture Brain was a weird company with some weird games. To their credit, they actually updated some of their games when they released them in the USA, like Super Ninja Boy and Ultimate Fighter had a number of updates beyond simply translation. Not sure if they did this with OP's game.

Super Chinese used a Namco mapper and 48k ROM on Famicom and US release was 64k ROM and CNROM. I have no idea if they actually added stuff or they just used the bigger ROM because it was cheap enough by 1989 that they could afford to waste half of it.

Yeah I always felt the same way. I mean a lot of game developers back then had distinct and recognizable styles but there was always something uniquely weird about Culture Brain to me and I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Their games felt like they were from an alternate universe that's only slightly different from ours, or like all their stuff was a shared universe that just never really took off. There's even a fighting game with the Super Chinese characters and it's kinda off.

To use Ultimate Fighter (a single plane beat em up) as an example, in normal gameplay the bossfights switch into something more like a 1v1 fighting game, but you can also choose a mode where the boss fights become turn-based. It's just such a bizarre inclusion

Baseball Simulator 1.000 is my favorite baseball game ever. I never had interest in the "simulation" aspect of it and instead only played with the superpowers. The Magic of Scheherazade is a mess of haphazardly crammed together play modes and weirdly nonstandard handcrafted mechanics like Little Ninja Brothers (or Kid Icarus), and it's pretty awkward to play, but it's also fairly charming. Overall I like Culture Brain.

Super Mario Bros 2. It was basically a romhack of Doki Doki Panic.
They could've just sold the Japanese version of SMB2 in the USA, even though it was a fricking awful and probably would've ruined Nintendo in North America.

But wouldn't they have to localize the FDS first?

Just stick the entire FDS inside a cartridge. Make sure to add an auto reverse mechanism to the disk drive.

Good point. That's why we missed out on the likes of Zelda, Metroid, and Castlevania.
