The game is a timeless masterpiece and 9S is the real MC + waaay more FUN to play.

Few modern games are as FUN and varied as Automata. I've 100% the game twice now, on 2 different systems, and will definitely revisit it again and again in the future.

NA is the same caliber gem of a game as OoT/MM, SH2, MGS2, Ico & SotC... with a fun and flashy gameplay straight out of MGR.

You're the one that didn't play the game.
Yes, the actual cutscenes are skippable. But most of the "cutscenes" are not actually cutscenes.
So you will be stuck listening to dialog that you can't skip, having no controll over your character, just sitting there waiting for the not-cutscene to finish.

013-040 is cutscene, which means you can hold B to skip it. The rest is not. Which means, if you die, you have to watch it over again.

Thought you meant the "cinematic" ones with the skip button. Whatever, though.

No. It is not fricking whatever.
Forcing someone to rewatch cutscenes is not okay. Especially in a game that has a difficulty option where you die in 1 hit.

And who in their right mind would make the choice to try out that challenge when they know a single mistake will make them sit and watch the same dialog and slow walking animations over and over.

I tried replaying it a few years ago. I skipped all the sidequests and wound up so underleveled that I got stuck at the very beginning of the 3rd act. Unfortunately that killed my desire to ever play the game again. I love character action games, but rpg elements have no place in the genre. I just want a quick, focused experience, but Automata doesn’t want you to have that; it wants you to either do sidequests for experience, grind for material drops to upgrade your weapon, or get lucky with chip drops. The different difficulty levels are some of the most imbalanced I’ve seen in the genre. The shmup elements are underdeveloped and extremely easy. 9S’ route is a slog you must endure to unlock the second half of the story. The worst part is that Yoko Taro originally conceived the multiple routes thing in Drakengard to pad the length of his low budget games. With Automata he finally had a big budget, yet he *still* reused the map three times to pad the game’s length. Unfortunately the best part of Automata is the story; not the gameplay. Since that’s the case you might as well just watch the cutscenes on youtube. I’ll take a linear action game like Ninja Gaiden any day.

      >I just want a quick, focused experience
Then do not play Nier games.
Side quests are pretty much the bread and soul, and everyone knows about the "lol you need to replay the game X times!" meme (which does not apply to Automata, but still).

      >shitting on the compact and fun map design.
Yeah, you gays don't know what you're talking about.

      >Unfortunately the best part of Automata is the story; not the gameplay.
Nope. The best parts are the GAMEPLAY and how it is used to deliver the SUBTEXT of the game. The plot is merely alright, enough to keep ya entertained and second guessing, but the way it ties to the IRL lives of modern humans and utilizes the unique interactive nature of gaming is the element that elevates Automata to a status of an art piece.

I’m not here to argue, but the core hack and slash combat in Automata is no better than what you’d find in a mobile game. Combos exist but there’s no reason to ever combo enemies; there’s no style system, no extra experience for killing with combos, no improved damage scaling - it’s actually less efficient to combo and juggle enemies as opposed to throwing out dash+heavy and then spamming light attack while your sword spins in place. Pod is a worthless inclusion; just hold the fire button for free damage. It’s so thoughtless that it might as well not exist. The enemy variety outside of bosses never encourages you to vary your approach to combat, especially in 9S’ campaign where you have one sword and are instead encouraged to perform a literal mobile-tier hacking minigame. But the worst part is the level scaling, which drops your damage output the greater the difference between your level and the enemy’s, meaning skill doesn’t win battles; numbers does. If you approach an enemy underleveled you do little damage, punishing the player for not grinding; you’ll notice competent action games aren’t RPGs for this very reason. You’re free to enjoy the game and it’s combat, but as someone that loves character action games I consider Automata - just as an action game - one of the weaker ones I’ve played.

It's miles better than. The best Platinum has created thus far.

          >waah waah you don't NEED to use muh combos!
Cry some more. You've tried to make these same arguments in the past.
Pod programs, 9S and hacking are still the best parts of the game. It's also a masterpiece that goes well beyond a mere "game"; it's a life altering experience like no other.

Why hasn't Yoko Taro tried returning to Drakengard? Besides being the thing he made when he was being edgy, why not go back there and see what he can do with it now that he's more immersed in the gaming industry.

No. That's just one part of the HUD.

      2
      >Show HP bar
      2

      3

My math might not be that good. But that's 20. Not 1, as you claim.
And I did not even include all the HUD options. If you want to display minor things like fishing spots, save locations and some other things, you need even more points.

I didn't even add that in the ones I numbered you idiot.
I literally said that was one of the minor ones.
What about having a minimap? Or a health bar? Or showing what lvl the enemies you are about to fight? Considering how much lvl scaling matters in this game, that is pretty damn important.

My bad, but big deal, you can have up to 128 slots anyway. It's still fun to mess around with once you unlock some more slots.

128 later yes. But early game you are starved for slots. And that's when you need to chips the most.
