Cid was never particularly against Shinra, if anything he was happy to work with them if they gave him a chance to be an astronaut. He really only gives up on them when it becomes clear they're never going to restart the space program and Rufus tries to steal his plane so he goes with Cloud but even then he's not really into it until well after they get the Highwind. Having him be a secret Shinra resistance supporter changes his whole character from the start.

I'm very sure they're paying specific attention to Cid, not only is he a Dragoon and there's groundwork laid out for him when Square usually avoids modeling out and programming Dragoons for action games like the plague even as recently as FF16 only having Dragoons as boss units (Sonon's staff-fighting animations and a dragon themed attack in Intergrade, Sahagins have Jump all the way back in Remake when Jump as a skill didn't even exist in FF7) but they want to approach his personal story carefully given its touchy subject matter.

Wutai was optional you could never visit if you wanted to. I always liked going there with Tifa or Cid as the party lead and getting different dialogue.

It was multiple things, since after the space program, Shinra only visits Rocket Town to "request" the Tiny Bronco (which Palmer was going to steal regardless), and Cid points out they already took the airship from him already too. His whole motivation is Shinra just taking his dreams from him over and over.

They're now acquired through the pokedex, which involves doing a shitton of filler questing.
Self Destruct is cool, except we don't get Final Attack in Rebirth so there's no utility to it, you just fricking explode. Plasma Discharge is just a limp damage increase and Soothing Breeze is a worse version of all your regular heals.
Everything else is just status effects which never land or aren't worth the trouble of stacking.
Shame. FF7 was rivals only with FF5 for Blue being GODS. That sounds almost as bad as what they did to Kimhari.

You really have no clue what would be an enemy skill or not, and some areas have like a tiny strip of land spawn unique enemies like the beach near Costa del sol. I think there would have been a good middle ground if the big intel battles were how you got enemy skills instead of combat simulators.
We were still buying strategy guides in the 90s. I'd go with my mom to Hastings just to skim the FF7 strategy guide off of the shelf because she wouldn't buy it.

CID’s only chance at space travel was doomed with a design flaw he too blind to see, and Shera saved his life. She was guilt ridden and became Cid’s lab servant for free while Cid guilt tripped her while at it.
Shinra cancelled the project because their priority was elsewhere, Cid’s rocket was meaningless by that point.
cid's first limit break in the japanese version was called "doorknob" and the animation was him gulping a fifth of whiskey and then b***hslapping shera with superhuman force. she would fly into the enemies and knock them down like bowling pins. they also cut "gaslighting" and "belt buckle" for the US release

They do go to outer space in Disc 2 as part of Cid's subquest. That's probably something they can't avoid to scrap in FF7R Part 3.
