It unironically has excellent controls for a console FPS at the time it came out.

I like that analog doesn't disable the d-pad, the d-pad feels better for movement especially because strafing speed stacks with forward/backward movement.

i remember my schoolmate was gushing over this game and i never played it because i was getting sick of him talking my ear off about it

Its really fun, for an early shooter it has a huge focus on making the combat fun which compensates for the samey weapons. Enemies are genuinely hilarious and appropriately challenging, from the silly bewildered head check when you shoot their helmets off to their panicked kicking of the grenades you throw at them.

It literally was the first game with double analog (not counting Goldeneye's setup which required 2 controllers lmao)

which is still a standard today.

        Anonymous

It doesn’t use dual analog standard controls. I doubt you even played this game. The left stick uses tank controls

if you change it in the game options you can use dual analog

This is why we can't have nice things. You implement something next-level, and the public just won't have it because they can't wrap their solidified minds around it. See also: real-time-with-pause, detested by many for nonsensical reasons.

Thats a reviewer though, they are almost always moronic

              Anonymous

Agreed, but they have the jobs they do because many potential game buyers are also moronic. If the reviewer can't figure out a new control scheme or see the potential merits and learn to use it, one would have to expect the average shopper is going to have the same issues.
It's actually even worse, because the reviewer is paid to do this as a professional, whereas almost all buyers are spending their free time to learn a game. My dad loved PC gaming, but never made the jump to 3D console games. He didn't dedicate the time to sit down and learn analog control schemes (even though with a joystick he was quite content), so he'd just bounce off a game in fifteen minutes, and never play it again and watch my brother and I play them instead.
The first game to try something new is going to have to catch a lot of flak and negative word of mouth, things like "dude, I tried that one, don't buy it. You have to use some weird new control scheme. Why learn that for just one game?". And not just for controls; note that Doom had a lot of issues with censorship and violence when it came out, but once those things became commonplace, games that came out a few years later and were objectively more graphic didn't catch the same response.

              Anonymous

Reviewers aren't the only people I see afraid of non-standard control schemes
People lose their shit if your third-person game doesn't control like GTA essentially

Panzerschrek enemies appear in the few levels near the end. They attack you from long range, and even when they are beyond the draw distance there is an audible sound effect of the bazooka shot and shit is not hitscan but instead there is a visible projectile traveling towards you for a few seconds. If you freeze like a moron that's on you, all it takes is to strafe left or right to avoid it. Bazooka enemies are always in the same horizontal plane as you so you don't need to shift your aim up or anything, just strafe and hipfire basically.

The great thing about MOH is that it's consistent in gameplay, you can still kill enemies that are beyond the draw distance if you hit them.

NTA but: You get splashed more often than not on near misses, especially if you're not in a big arena. I'm not saying they're as bad as Blood 2 hitscanners or anything but I can see how they're annoying.

I like how it has more enemy variety and you get to fight tanks and other vehicles, something the first game was really lacking

I grew up thinking it was superior but I replayed them back to back and found the original to be a much more engaging game, levels are tough but fair and generally you can play for hours without getting burned out.

Underground on the other hand feels less cohesive. Highs are probably better than in the original, but certain levels get very frustrating with too many enemies. Off the top of my head I think about the mission in the mountains and the later Paris levels with panzerfaust Black folk left and right. It's still an extraordinary game, I'm just saying that it took me 20 years to realize that it's not better than the original.

Other than these two, MOH Frontline retains some of the vibe and is worth playing. Every other game in the series is garbage to varying degree with no atmosphere of the originals.

Don't listen to people who say that Rising Sun/European Assault/Vanguard are good games, they are PS2 era nostalgia shitters who never played the original games and have no ground to compare

        Anonymous

I agree, Underground has a tons of neat content like the new enemies and more varied locations, but the first game just flows better

Underground ramps up enemy count, adds new weapons, adds in tanks and motorcyles as enemies. Adds daylight missions. Looks, plays, feels and controls the same but due to the higher enemy count the game's pace is ramped up a bit. Music is just as good. In a few missions there are friendly AI npcs who are fighting on their own on the streets.

Atmosphere is still top notch. Second level in the game are the Paris catacombs.

Multiplayer is pretty shit honestly. Framerate is fine, you unlock new levels and characters as you progress in the campaign altough there are cheats for it if you want to skip ahead. There is radar like in Goldeneye so you always know where the other player is, and both of you have too much health so its very bullet spongey, headshots don't do a whole lot from what I remember so its not a matter of who lands a good hit first.

        Anonymous

        interesting
yeah a big part of medal of honor split screen was screencheating to guess the other player's position, a radar would completely ruin it

Excellent game. Absolutely loved it. One of the few FPS titles I completed. The missions in these oldschool shooters were so fun, the games are a blast despite the shit controls. What happened? The nonstop emphasis on beefier graphics? Modern emphasis on multiplayer for general monetization?

do you guys play default control config?

      Anonymous

I do. The game for some reason turns on analog automatically every time you load a level, but I turn it off and play with a dpad. Fine aiming with dpad is very smooth and precise, whereas analog controls are quite jerky and even though they *should* be better, they aren't. Once you gel with dpad and shoulder buttons for strafing, you realize that the game was built around it. Enemy timings and reactions/animations all have specific rhythm timed to it that gives you time to stop, bring up crosshairs and aim.

That being said you can also run and gun blindly once you pick up on different weapons and how they behave (MP40 fires up and to the left from crosshairs, Sten fires above, STG is dead on, etc).

i beat as a kid. plan on replaying this game, on next playstation 1 yearlong marathon. Tried a little recently, and yeah, sliw controls, but is comoensated by slower enemies. They stay on screen more and have some cool animation that is absent from modern games. Feel more real because of that

To be honest, it always bothered me a bit that 100% of the scientists turn on you. They should have left some of them to actually cower indefinitely, just for that bit of ethical grey area. Feels a little propagandistic as-is.

It was the first "realistic" WW2 FPS (Hidden and Dangerous doesn't count). Spielberg faced surprising stiff opposition from two groups when trying to sell the idea.
From the game industry itself, that thought that players were only interested in aliens, demons and plasma rifles, in space, and wouldn't be interested in this old boring ww2 stuff.
And from veterans groups, that thought to be disrespectful to make videogames about such serious things.

Anyone know how to use MouseInjector on Duckstation for Medal of Honor Underground? I played the first Medal of Honor with a controller and while I made it work that shit was rough as hell. The franchise is pretty cool so far though. The music is fantastic.

      Anonymous

      >rough as hell

Don't use analog sticks. Use dpad and shoulder buttons for strafe. Aiming with dpad is very comfy and smooth. Its not a game to run and gun, you are meant to stand still and take accurate shots.

Granted you can also strafe around the enemies and run and gun and still kill them but you waste lots of ammo. Crosshairs + dpad is king
