Most games look good as is, but over the years I've run into a handful that just seem to plain look better in widescreen. Beyond Oasis is is one of the best examples of it. I've loved the game since I first discovered it, but when I started emulating and trying things out I found it fits the game way better and is the only way I play it now. Anyone else have similar reactions to some games?
Comparison. Maybe it's just me but the original aspect ratio looks squished now. Very few old games does this seem to work with.
That game in general could need some zooming out.
Some devs back then were too keen on having pretty, large sprites at the detriment of visibility and thus gameplay.
I would definitely agree with that as a mod now, but I'm glad they went with such big detailed sprites when they made it originally.
Meh, I play many other games and it's been a while for BO. Ironically I was trying to get into Minish Cap because it's free on switch now but again got bored with it.
Looks like stretched shit
It is just you
This looks correct
The sprites are just xbox hueg
>That game in general could need some zooming out.
That would defeat the point of the visuals
>Some devs back then were too keen on having pretty, large sprites at the detriment of visibility and thus gameplay.
It’s almost like it was an artistic/game design choice or something
any games that look better in tallscreen?
I was a moron child and played through jak in anamorphic widescreen on a 4:3 crt, I thought he looked cooler "taller"
You have made this thread several times over the years. Play more games instead of replaying Beyond Oasis over and over again.
The stretching doesn't look good. Would be interesting to see the game hacked to support 16:9 without stretching.
that game has a sequel on the saturn
play it
I've played it a number of times, absolutely love it.
>playing a 4:3 game stretched out to 16:9
non-square pixels are frickin hot, get better taste
You're just stretching the image, you myopic clown.
Genesis having a strange 320px across as opposed to a more standard 256px like most systems had already kind of scrunches graphics in 4:3, i don't think 16:9 is the answer, but yes the pixel ratios certainly aren't 1:1 and chances are they are a bit more crunched than the dev machines they drew it on.
>Genesis having a strange 320px across as opposed to a more standard 256px
Can't wait for the 2.68Mhz shitzo to reply to this one.
I guess this is tangentially related but the original Megami Tensei for the Famicom has a hidden UI that you can toggle left and right to see the commands or the minimap. If you want to see the minimap you hit B to switch to the minimap side and if you want to use a command you must hide the minimap. If the game was widescreen like my mockup shows it wouldnt necessarily look better but it would feel better to play.
translation patch status?
The system isn't really a burden, you just leave the map at all times and switch to the menu when you need to open it.
The only advantage would be that the play screen would be centered
when you get into a battle though it closes your map and moves the screen over to your commands. Its not really a huge burden but it is more steps than is necessary if the screen was wider.
the only thing wrong it seems with the widescreen hack on duckstation with armored core 1 is that the text on the menus aren't centered properly.
Maybe try Genesis Plus GX Wide
