Looking forward to Postal Brain Damaged to go on sale, because I'm cheap. Fingers crossed a new Quake is in the works that doesn't go full strogg
When is Ion Fury: Aftershock?
Soon I hope. Ion Fury is the only decent boomer shooter. The Build Engine is the perfect mix between good true 3D level design, and the retro aesthetic. Better than Doom clones and better than Quake clones.
What we really need are some clones unreal 2 style games with the interactivity of Build games. IE Duke Nukem 2001 or Deus Ex.
>I have a small white penis
Amazing that you still have the nerve to post something like this, Rugga.
Amazing you get butthurt over an anon saying you have a small penis unlesss you really do have a small penis like all the homosexuals from Ganker
>boomer shooter
I used the term retro shooter bc someone always b***hes about the term "boomer shooter", and you're still whining about it.
you're using it
Yes, I am aware.
That is such a fricking moronic term. Almost as bad as people referring player characters as "toons".
At least that was organic and something used 20+ years ago.
>he calls video games video games
DON'T PUT THE BLAME ON ME
Its triggers millenials who blame their parents for everything, so I'm going to keep saying it.
need to go all the way back to just calling them "doom clones"
for me it's "wolfendoom"
I'm going to start calling them "Doomlikes" to really piss people off
Chex-esques, if you will.
it ain't much, but it's honest living
Um, sweaty it's actually Doom-lite, please get it right next time.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go play the dark souls of doomlites.
It makes me mad every time I see it. I can longer talk about some of my favorite games on here because idiots had to force this meme that everyone panders to every thread
game?
ASKE
should release on steam soon
>should release on steam soon
an actual release or more EA shit?
I can't play the citadel more than 30 minutes at a time because the screen tearing is fricking unbearable
AKSE if fun, but it's quite literally Quake in almost every way possible. so, if you're ok with that then cool
I'm gonna need to know what game this is. I am going to jerk off while playing it.
The Citadel
you won't jerk off unless you're into guro
UGH
the camera height did not change before or after the "slide". terrible.
So when you're old like you then your reflexes and perceptions just delete tons of frames from your surroundings, huh? I wonder how much stuff you miss with your dying brain
It actually does.
>citadel players are brainded coomers
shocking news!
Why did all these "boomer shooters" start being made and played only after Doom 2016's success?
why do you think? Because doom 2016 reignited theyre popularity
I think its several things. Yes, Doom reignited the interest in that style of shooter, but also the availability of free 3D game engines had really hit its stride (For instance, Unreal Engine 4 became free on March 2015. Unity 5 came out 2015 as well). Additionally, I think there was just a general reaction to the story inundated shooters around that time.
We're pretty much in the golden age of retro styled shooters now though. You can really pick your poison, and publishers like New Blood pretty consistently put out great stuff to select from.
It really is a great time to play these games. Even if some aren't to your specific liking there are so god damn many to play. The new games reel in new fans who tend to try the old games and then the genre gets more and more popular. I only started playing some of these games last year myself, although I started with Blood then went to Doom and then into some new ones. I've been bouncing between games ever since. Some old, some new. I gotta say though that Doom has the largest amount of great mods but all the old games have plenty of mods and QOL things even if you're picky. There are quite a few promising new ones in development as well.
Don't forget the development of gzdoom, a third of these games wouldnt exist without it
Graf Zahl is an absolute legend of our era and anyone shitting on him for having high standards and pushing a regular release schedule is a gay
moron
metadoom is epic
hrot is terrible
I still like Ion Fury ;_;
This was a bit of a shite joke to be fair.
okay groomer
hrot is okay, i like that the dev is consistent with the updates
amid evil has some of my favorite weapons in a retro style shooter but god damn are the levels confusing
dusk overall is the best out of all of them and it's not even close
that said, luv me blood, luv me doom 2, luv me quake, 'ate hexen, simple as
I really appreciate the fact that Amid Evil has a totally unique set of enemies per chapter. Its like you get to relearn parts of the game each time, which keeps the game engaging. It also has some very striking level design (the crazy geometry of the crystal enemies levels was great).
The bosses could be a bit disappointing, but that's like most shooters.
Can't wait.
Doesn't even have a release date yet, it will probably take a long time to come out.
Looks pretty sick though
Doesn't feel right in 2d. Muhreens should either be in a quake clone or a 7th geb gears clone.
I agree
>those xenos bastards shall pay for shooting down my ride
Tired of space marines, want to see more imperial guard, tau or even eldar shuriken gunplay.
You're getting Darktide and you'll like it.
Bro Tau already got an FPS...and it was sabotaged with a 6 dollar budget so that it'd crash and burn and give them the excuse to never make a Tau game again.
IG is a Battlefield clone easy
>40K retro shooter game
There's no way they can screw this up, right? Even if 40K games tend to be a coin toss on quality.
Yeah I'm really looking forward to this one too.
>retro shooter
>doesn't feature 3rd/4th ed models
My only gripe is the stiffness of the enemies
>doesn't use the oldhammer sculpts for enemy designs
ONE
JOB
I thought I was going to like this a lot but I kind of hate it
The save system, the fact that it has a hub, theres just a lot of problems i'm surprised i'm having with it
the guns are quite nice though
Same. Unfortunately underwhelming, but not terrible either.
Yeah, I played it recently and although it had some really nice looking levels, I didn't really enjoy the gameplay that much. It also sucks that it's been like 3 years and EP2 still hasn't released. But at least I know now not to spend money on early access games.
>I thought I was going to like this a lot but I kind of hate it
that's also my review, but a year ago. the basic controls were bugged and it RAN LIKE SHIT after advertising 666 fps. I realized that a dev who would release that version of the game even under the banner of "early access" will never ever finish a quality product, so I refunded and...
YOU ONLY LAUNCH ONCE.
>the basic controls were bugged
I can't recall experiencing any issues with the controls but I do remember the mouse sensitivity was so fricking slow for some reason. So slow in fact that I had to set it to max just so I could get a reasonable speed.
I haven't played it since it launched. Did anything change since then? I really liked it but anything goes with Early Access.
i like it
>look it up
>still in early access
HOW
THE
FRICK?
I remember seeing an early access video of this ages ago on YouTube. Must have been like 2018 or 2019.
the devs gimped themselves by using an outdated engine. they made a big blogpost b***hing about it
For me, it's Viscerafest
Basically a beat em up
Did they give up?
nah they're just slow
No. It's still under development and slowly getting content released for it.
it's kind of underwhelming tbh
almost no RPG elements at all where they actually had been needed
shame, so much potential
>75% of the games are in early access
>the rest are held hostage by perpetual time wasters like 3D Realms or New Blood
the fatigue is starting to set in, lads
>perpetual time wasters like 3D Realms or New Blood
>new blood
most of the games are primarily one man show dev teams
shockingly good
it was ok, some of the problems can be fixed by bug fixing (enemies often just standing still until fired upon, even if they are in line of sight) some of the problems (like some levels going on far too long, the ridiculous number of enemies) aren't really fixable
>levels going on far too long, the ridiculous number of enemies
Play TNT Evilution and come back.
>Play TNT Evilution and come back.
Why would you wish TNT upon anybody?
>tfw unironically like TNT
HIS EYES ARE BLIND
HE HAS NOT SEEEEN TRUE LENGTH AND ENEMY COUNT!
Could be worse
That's just mean.
Did they increase ammo?
>Did they increase ammo?
I heard about this complaint but never understood it, I played the campaign on hard my first time through and there was plenty of ammo to be found if you actually explored/looked for it. anyone who claimed that ammo was hard to come by didn't look around.
I was always flush with ammo in my playthroughs. The only exceptions would be the minigun and brainfricker. Those just don't do any damage before they finish chewing through their whole ammo stack.
this, I was the anon that said he played on hard first time and had no issues.. I also got a TON of items like the ammo boxes that fill up your selected weapon, as well as the one that gives you guns akimbo with unlimited ammo and mostly used those for the minigun.. the brainfricker I exclusively used it's secondary mode on large groups for the AOE damage.
had to play with one hand at some bits.
Let me guess: you were jerking it to furry girls and the bow?
r8 and h8 these games in early access hell
>project downfall
>get to the orange door
>wrath: aeon of ruin
>roboquest
>ultrakill
>prodeus
>hrot
>viscerafest
>graven
>white hell
>dread templar
I love the idea and presentation of Graven but the development is so fricking slow that its never getting released at this rate. Personally I'm kinda excited about Gloomwood, getting thief vibes from it.
Gloomwood looks good and the demo is fun but it's taken FOREVER to fricking release because new blood are lazy or something, and now that it's finally been announced it's STILL going to be early access so who fricking knows when it's going to actually get finished.
>Personally I'm kinda excited about Gloomwood, getting thief vibes from it.
The game whose website is called thiefwithguns gave you Thief vibes?
All good except Graven, a scam
Prodeus is a 10/10
Ultrakill is a 9/10
Everything is mediocre and barely worth a try
>get to the orange door
Been following it for a while and kinda confused on what its supposed to be now. What I played though guns feel nice and it plays well. Dev seems like the kind of guy i'd hate if i knew him though
>wrath: aeon of ruin
Was really looking forward to this one, everything advertised is up my ally. Hope it delivers. The EA was alright but kinda disappointing. Weapons are super unbalanced right now, but the devs are keeping communication clear so im still hopeful
>ultrakill
Genre defining. Will be looked back on for being the father of a bunch of clones like Dusk was. Ignore what contrarians say its really fricking good.
>prodeus
Replaying through it right now since a ton of content has dropped. Its pretty fun I would say and neat how they're pushing users levels as a feature. Biggest complaints I have is the checkpoint system is awful, and I think there's too many guns which causes a bit of bloat and redundancy in the arsenal. I wish you could only have one of each type of weapon equipped per level and choose between them in menu, it would give the player some decision making in what they want to focus on per weapon type. This is only a problem in the campaign though.
>hrot
Nothing special but a very solid shooter. Coolest thing about it is an in game pistol start and randomizer setting. More old school shooters need this.
>graven
Was excited for this but apparently its a huge mixed bag right now. Was hoping someone could tell me what the issues are, i don't wanna dump $25 on it just yet.
>white hell
Not super impressed by this one so far. Movement is slippery it just feels clunky. I swear it feels like the biggest selling point is that Hakita did the music which doesn't inspire confidence from me.
Turbo overkill is one I would recommend also by the way. It's an ultrakill clone but probably the best one on the market right now.
>Genre defining. Will be looked back on for being the father of a bunch of clones like Dusk was
LOOOOOOL
the absolute fricking state of shiteating indie contrarians.
>Graven
I haven't played since august last year, and I'm sure there's been an update since then, but my main complaints are:
magic was basically useless, it is used for environmental interaction ONLY, the spells will either do zero damage to an enemy or damage so low that you are literally better off picking up a box off the ground and throwing it at an enemy, that is NOT an exagerration, it's that bad; on top of this the puzzles are remarkably simplistic, to the point where it's barely a mental challenge in any way, just matching elemental spells to environmental cues
the weapons are underwhelming: melee weapons only have a basic swing attack that can't be charged, held, or modified, you just click the button to swing the weapon....and it feels bad, partially because the hitboxes aren't good, partially because the weapons seem to hit like a wet noodle, they aren't satisfying to use at all; the most effective form of combat in the game is to circle around someone and hit them with a melee weapon, because their hitbox is long an thin whereas yours are shot and wide, so trying to outrange them doesn't work so well, just circlestrafe and hit them over and over until they die
ranged weapons are better, but still not great, the enemies seem to be deliberately resistant to projectiles, but all this means is that everything feels like a bullet sponge, because as I said before: melee is shit, so you feel encouraged to use ranged options, but then the enemies take forever to die (it's only SLIGHTLY faster to use melee)
the game can't decide if it's an RPG or an FPS, you have an inventory system like an RPG....but no stats to speak of, and you have guns and melee like an FPS....but everything takes forever to kill, and you have magic....that feels completely pointless
the graphics, stmosphere, music and style are nice, but everything about the gameplay sucks, and it seems to be stuck in development hell like WRATH
>magic was basically useless, it is used for environmental interaction ONLY
I really liked this concept, and was hoping they would explore it more with using magic as a form of CC to set up kills with your primaries. But that only works if the magic is useful and weapons are fun to use. A shame that does not seem to be the case.
>Genre defining
Ok, where are all these clones for your shitty EA game? Lmao. What a moron tranime cuck
>Ok, where are all these clones for your shitty EA game?
Turbo Overkill, Severed steel, Devilated and Reaver come to mind. Paladins straight up ripped off the coin toss mechanic. Postal Brain Damaged and White hell have parry mechanics ripped straight off of ultrakill.
Keep living under a rock if that makes you happy, but don't pretend you know what you're talking about.
>ultrakill invented sliding and parry in fps
God fricking dammit, zoomers are braindead morons.
Zoomers trying to pose as boomers is so embarrassing.
>Before Ultrakill no """boomer""" shooter is using a slide or parry system
>Ultrakill comes out
>Suddenly every """boomer""" shooter has fast sliding and a parry
It's not about inventing a mechanic moron, its about popularizing it.
>genre defining.
I knew that anime posters were moronic but you are even worse.
>Doom eternal but for poor people and contrarians
>Genre defining.
I never seen a worthy opinion about shooters from someone with some anime girl near their post.
>ultrakill
>doom eternal
Anon.....
They have nothing incomon except halway - arena - hallway level design and hook
I kinda like early access as a tool to get feedback and sell it cheaper. Then everyone else gets a finished product at full price
>tool to get feedback
Look at Forgive Me Father, it was in early access, came out fully and was riddled with bugs, poor desing decisions and the last chapter was lackluster, with one of the worst bosses I've seen in shooter games
It took them a couple of patches to fix the biggest issues, but the shitty last chapter is still there, feels like they shit out the game preemptively. The early access still hasn't ended.
>ultrakill
Maybe they'd have a bit more progress if they stopped adding so many fricking E-celebs to the game.
Name one that isn't Mandalore
I always see people tacking about Selaco and how "it's like FEAR" and I was unimpressed by the demo. I mean, it's impressive that it's using gzdoom, the game is fine, but I found the overall aesthetic just too "busy" But something about the gunplay, probably because it's based in gzdoom, just didn't feel that great to me for what it was trying to be..
Speaking of games like FEAR, I wish more people talked about SEVERED STEEL, the game is actually really solid. It was a little barebones at first but it had community maps and the dev has added new campaigns and other stuff since release. Game feels like Titanfall movement mixed w/ Fear gunplay and AI and is pretty fun to play but no one ever talks about it.
For people that like a ton of movement and slo-mo in their shoiters, it's pretty good. I didn't get into it because there was too much movement. You can double jump, wall jump, slide, dive, bullet time, throw weapons and it overwhelmed me. I like shooting but I'm not built for constant sliding, jumping and dodging. For someone that likes that though, it's really underrated and surprisingly under the radar.
Maybe you just suck at the game. The shooting in great!
I have found it really abusable
Free slow mo bar at every headshot was OP
Also you almost never wallrun
>severedsteel
I want something like this with a more fleshed out parkour system from Mirror's Edge, is it too much to ask for? Why can't I move around like a ninja while I shoot people to death?
>Why can't I move around like a ninja while I shoot people to death?
you can though, go look at footage
I'll be honest, I think the HD assets that are used for SiN Reloaded look like absolute dogshit. They remind me of those HD mods you would see for older games that look like shit because they put high res textures on low quality geometry
Yeah, they really just need to take the maps and give them more detail to fit with the better textures.
I'm more excited for this:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2061230/Chasm_The_Rift/
WHEN IS THE FRICKING ULTRAKILL UPDATE??? YOU SAID COMING SOON A MONTH AGO YOU homosexual. WHERE IS IT
Is Perfect Dark considered a boomy shooty? I've been playing it for the first time lately, and no joke, it's quickly turning into one of my favorite shooters.
console shooters are distinct from boomer shooters but it's close enough era wise
it's a great game, rare's OSTs in the N64 era were the best
>I've been playing it for the first time lately, and no joke, it's quickly turning into one of my favorite shooters.
By the end it may be your favorite shooter. Its an amazing game, and there's so much attention to details in the game. Did you know that levels objectives change in coop mode? Don't forget all the scenarios you can play that get harder and harder. The game is FILLED with replay value and desperately deserves a re-release (maybe by the same guys who did Turok and Turok 2, if Microsoft would let them). Its an absolute shame there's no way to play Perfect Dark with your buddies online on a PC that's worth a shit.
Anyone tried 1964 GEPD netplay yet?
Perfect dark is elder god tier shooter back in the golden age before gay shit like halo and cod
real question, I haven't touched any of resurgent retro shooters except Dusk, give me 1 or two that are actually worth buying
HROT's pretty good. Although it's still in early access, I thought both episodes were really fun.
Amid Evil is pretty good. I liked Prodeus enough too. I only just started HROT but it's okay so far. Not mind-blowing.
Ashes was such good shit bros. Found it here on Ganker in a sovl thread, the gameplay is fun and engaging (played twice on survival mode) but the atmosphere drips character, its incredible. It even made me want to learn to make doom maps just to capture some of that on my own but shit aint as easy as it seems, anyone with wad making experience want to share some stories?
>filters
took the image from the moddb page, Black person
unironically 2spooky4me.
maybe ill pick it up again later. I really liked that there's an attempt at worldbuilding.
Yeah, I picked it up recently and really wasn't expecting the level of creepy atmosphere from a Doom mod.
>the subway level when the ghosts show up
I'm curious if I'll learn what the hell was going on down there later
Ashes is really a god tier TC, it's insane how well it works, and survival mode feels really tense making every bullet count. It feels more like a Build Engine game than a Doom Engine game with how vast and detailed the maps are.
I felt the same way, I think I was more than halfway through EP2 when I was looking at the map and realized that none of the sectors overlapped and the map was technically flat 2D. The maps feel naturally designed enough that it's like they weren't constrained at all, with the exception of a few sections where you have to hop gaps. Surprising amount of verticality too, considering.
Any other recommendations? I was playing Alien Eradication, pretty fun and it's neat how they made lots of different paths through the same maps. Combat Synthetic might as well be called "Knuckles"
Agreed, the best vidya experience I've had since like beta Minecraft. I need to replay Afterglow because of picrel; I'm a convo maximalist and didn't realize he gives you a special mission if you don't bother him too much.
God ashes was so fricking good. Super excited for part 3 if they ever decide to start work on it.
Pretty sure he said he's been working on it since Afterglow was released
Last post I saw said they're taking a breather and working on side projects at the moment.
Hadn't seen that, I guess not too surprising, it's amazing that a small team could create something like Afterglow in just 3-4 years anyways.
why are all these Black person games stuck in early access? every fricking single one of them and they're all perpetually in it
early access was a mistake
because turns out 2 man teams can't make stuff very fast
>why are all these Black person games stuck in early access?
I needed the money to keep funding development. I would have liked to released a complete product right away.
Its ok don't worry. You do what you have to do to keep going.
That's nice and all if you're actually developing it, which I doubt. Seems like every fricking game that goes into early access gets stuck in some sort of vaporware limbo.
most games do
devs getting the money up front before the product is finished gives them little incentive to ever finish
there have been plenty of "made by one person" games released that were finished because they didnt do the early access shit, as i explained above, early access gives them no real incentive to finish because they already have your money
look at shit like valheim
any updates on ion fury dlc?
What do you guys think of Perilous Warp? I thought its visuals looked nice and its gameplay was pretty decent. But it's way too short for its price, and there could've been improvements to the weapons and better enemy variety.
>The game is based on our own game engine, Volatile, which is highly moddable, so we plan to release a free SDK
i will now play your game
Is cultic actually going to be full game next month or just early access shit?
Kingpin Life of crime was real stinkin good
Still waiting for the remaster.
I swear I've tried finishing Doom 1 several times and have never finished it. Is it really worth sticking out? I've tried vanilla and modded and still quit somewhere in the midpoint
Also should I play Quake 2 or og Unreal next?
Your emotions are telling you that the game is not for you. Stop playing it.
Unreal all the way, btw.
Try Doom 2 and see if you like it more (because it has the SSG and more enemy variety).
Thanks brehs, I think I'll give D2 a shot before I say it's just not for me.
is necromunda hired gun considered a boomer shooter? if so, i've been playing through that. its okay. i love the voice acting on the female protagonist, its so stupid. it mostly just makes me want to play eye divine cybermancy.
Oh sweet, a marketing thread for the same 7 games ad nauseam.
and none of them are finished products and few of them ever will be. I don't know how people who played real FPS from the 2000s (and late 90s) put up with this scamshit. the entire retro revival of FPS in my book never happened. it was just an advertising trend for a few years and nothing came of it. no actual games were ever released.
> the entire retro revival of FPS in my book never happened.
I know I'm on Ganker but you sound very bitter for no real reason. I can name several games off the top of my head that are completely finished products and quite good too. If you can't find them then its really entirely your fault, either because you're too bitter to trust others that they're good games, or you're too apathetic to go search for games you'd enjoy yourself.
Take it from me, who has been playing shooters since the mid to late 90s (so I was playing "retro shooters" when they were contemporary) that right now is THE best time to be a shooter enjoyer.
>you sound very bitter for no real reason.
>no real reason
>as a fan of singleplayer FPS with decent production values, a genre that effectively died about 15 years ago
??
>I can name several games off the top of my head that are completely finished products and quite good too.
name three right now and if any of them are still in early access your mother will die in her sleep tonight.
>too bitter to trust others that they're good games
usually watching 5 minutes of gameplay is enough to confirm that they're not good games. like that severed steel game somebody mentioned earlier. click on the first review, the reviewer is praising it profusely, meanwhile the gameplay is all random jumping around with enemies that barely move, an art style that gives eye cancer and then the bomb drops: 3 hours of gameplay and the last hour is bad even according to this reviewer who liked the game's core. if that's the best the retro fps revival offers it offers nothing. early access by the way so the devs can pretend they'll "fix it" some day.
>Take it from me, who has been playing shooters since the mid to late 90s
so was I.
>right now is THE best time to be a shooter enjoyer.
you need to check into an emergency room asap. provisional diagnosis: severe copium overdose.
>name three right now and if any of them are still in early access your mother will die in her sleep tonight.
Dusk, Ion Fury, Amid Evil.
>Ion troony
brain rot
He's right. You little trio of subhumans
bitter
You sound like a friendless homosexual lmao
whatever you wienersucker. have a nice day.
What if someone were to make a sexy boomer shooter? More cheescake than hdoom.
what does cheesecake mean?
Sexually provocative, but not necessarily pornography.
You mean Hedon?
Apply directly to the forehead.
couldn't get into that one
While hedon is great, its too damn huge in scope. But more towards build engine protag with sexy quips, blood level smoothness in movement. Not sure if i want a smaller roster of weapons though, trying to keep it quick and simple.
Hedon?
You've got Hedon for that to a degree, also Slooter is in dev over on F95
I've beat Crystal Heart and found it generally fun, but I got sick of in the Elf boss fight
>Room of 10 billion enemies + barebones boss LMAO
is Bloodrite better on this front or nah?
Because /m/ is dead anon, normies don't buy it and then people are split on the east/west spectrum within the audience
It actually gets pretty regular updates
This isn't a retro shooter, but a retro feature. Anyone know any recently released games that have a server browser and dedicated servers? I'm tired of matchmaking shit.
pavlov vr, but obviously vr only as you can see from the name. really fun game though! they're not dedicated servers, it seems they're more "lobbies", a la cod style, but there's a browser
Duskworld (Dusk multiplayer) has a server browser and has dedicated servers, though last I was playing it multiplayer for that game is kind of dead, even shortly after release. You might find a few players playing through.
Waiting for Cultic
How do you all determine what kind of mouse sensitivity settings to use?
I can never feel comfortable with any specific settings. For some reason, videogames still can't have a mouselook as natural as the mouselook you get when you're outside of videogames and just doing regular shit like browsing the internet and moving your mouse around.
Make sure they have any sort of mouse smoothing and acceleration turned off. Also play around with your fov as your current fov might *feel* like your mouse is acting unnaturally.
LOTS of games have shit input code so that may be why. smoothing you can't turn off, rounding bugs (like bioshock 1), acceleration you can't turn off...
i consider quake 3 the gold standard of mouse input so when im configuring a game i generally go to mouse-sensitivity.com to find the equivalent to the sensitivity i use in quake
>Aftershock wasn't even at Realm's Deep

Amazon futa Orc dommy mommy>Cyberpunk Snarker Duke Nukem ripoff.
She's not a futa in the games, what a fricking ripoff. When are we going to get a real futa in a boomer shooter?

>Zoomies are so dopamine fried they think this is good vidya
Holy shit, kill Amerimutts now
Frick off you homosexual freak
I like Quake and Brutal Doom, but the older I get the sicker I get of these new retro shooters. Most of them look worse than the games of the era they're allegedly emulating.
The issue I have with them is that most of them look the same. Now don't get me wrong, there's been some pretty neat ones I've played, but then there's also a whole bunch of them that look and play the same. It's kind of like those indie 2D side scrollers and RPG's that all looked the identical to each other.
Not only worse looks but complete lack of level design proficiency and other skills which made the classic what they are like proper AI or basic netcode, modding tools.
brutal doom sucks
No it doesn't and neither do its offshoots
What does suck is the zoomers who think Brutal Doom is the only way to play Doom now and refuse to play anything else Doom has to offer
>What does suck is the zoomers who think Brutal Doom is the only way to play Doom now and refuse to play anything else Doom has to offer
fair, that's mostly what I hate about it.. it's a fun mod but people act like anything that isn't like it is dogshit for some reason, so in that respect yeah I wish brutal doom never existed
Nope, Brutal Doom makes vanilla Doom obsolete
Cope
i dont like shooters where you move too fast they make me sick
that's tragic
Are you Asian? Apparently they are more prone to it genetically
I've been playing the rogue-like mod for Doom and it's been fun. DoomRL Arsenal. I've also been playing some of the well known wads and trying out weapon packs. I like playing through Ancient Aliens with the Final Doomer AA loadout for weapons. Golden Souls is fricking great too. As is Ashes.
As for newer retro-style shooters, I played through Dusk, Amid Evil, and Prodeus a month ago. They were all very-solid-to-good. I played a little HROT a few days ago and it was pretty average. The aesthetic is fresh but it otherwise feels very straight forward. Hedon and Viscerafest didn't hook me at all though. I just didn't care at all for them. Not totally sure why. Maybe just the artstyle of each.
>I've been playing the rogue-like mod for Doom and it's been fun. DoomRL Arsenal.
Does this have a level randomizer component? Or at least can it work with Oblige-generated maps?
Not sure. There are some compatability patches for a few mods for DRLA but I don't recall seeing any for what you mentioned. Might as well try it. It'd be even greater with randomized levels. I have to start over whenever I hit the end of Knee Deep in the Dead, etc but with a randomizer I could keep going or set my own limit before reaching a random boss. I'll likely try it with various other mods.p
Oblige does work with DRLA. Weapons spawns are tiny bit more scarce on generated maps but it works fine otherwise. On the vanilla doom maps there are some spots with guarenteed items or weapons for DRLA that obviously can't exist in a generated map unless you go in and place them yourself. I like the slight bump in difficulty of the generated maps though. You wind up with some strong weapons kinda early on the vanilla maps.
what's a doom modification with good mouselook?
Just use GZDoom
that'll do
WHERE IS IT?
>All those retro quake 3d/2.5d shooters
>No Shogo inspired boomer shooter with cheesy anime plot and mechs
Why???
cuz its the west
I was thinking about a mecha HL1 mod after seeing a playthrough for a Shogo themed mod for HL1 on Bolloxed's channel
One of these days I guess
Shogo was just Blood 2 with anime shit
Other way around, isn't it?
Nah, Blood 2 was just soulless Shogo with cringe edgy aesthetics
shogo released first stupid
>Shogo was just Blood 2 with anime shit
Dude, Blood 2 as a game fricking sucked ass. Bulletsponge enemies, re-used content, moronic story. The game was rushed to be released to the point it had game breaking bugs and no ending. Literally no ending. You kill last boss, there is a cutscene in which Caleb tell Ishmael to "shut up, I need to concentrate", just to load credits in the next second.
Still, awesome (albeit weak) weapons, great sound/ambient/music and overall atmosphere Plus the single best secret ever to bless FPP games
Shogo characters looked like ass, but at least the game was finished.
>Shogo characters looked like ass, but at least the game was finished.
you must be joking, the game feels just as rushed and unfinished as blood 2
You have a proper ending, and from what I recall, there were 2 last bosses depending on how you acted in campaign. Granted, Shogo: MAD was THE GENERIC SCI-FI MANGA: THE GAME. But it didn't had immortal bosses, AI and animations glitching half of the fights and clipping through walls/floor to your death.
Then again, I played Blood 2 literally when it released. No idea if the Nightmare expansion pack changed anything.
>AI and animations glitching half of the fights
it did, and enemies would kill you the instant you rounded a corner, critical hit or not
the entire game forces you to corner camp enemies that you can shoot but can't see you unless you want to be deleted instantly (though many time they are scripted to move somewhere so that plan fails)
>and enemies would kill you the instant you rounded a corner, critical hit or not
I think it was only the case with several hit-skanning, machinegun soldiers or occasional enemi with a howitzer. Still you are right.
Don't mind me, just the best Build engine gane ever made coming through
>build engine
no
That's not build engine moron
Moot???
Boomers only play their single player boomer shooters. Boomers like to pretend they were some arena shooter multiplayer gods. Stop begging for another retro online shooter yall aren't that good to begin with.
no one brought online up except you
I feel like zoomer shooters have more in common with boomers shooters than anything I grew up with. Not that this is an insult.
Neon white is more of a First person racing/obstacle game than an actual shooter. The shooting is really light and mostly there to let you pass obstacles.
Easily one of the best games I've played lately even if I got lost a couple of times
>mfw trash hags
>"RREEEEEAAAAAA"
>jumps everywhere
My favourite enemy type.
Have you been to the russian submarine? The horror.
didnt see the big deal about this tbh. boring gameplay, deleted it even. I'll try it again though
Maybe you just like different games, that's fine. If you do try again, play on apocalypse because that difficulty really brings the tension up. It also makes secret hunting a necessity, mind you.
I'm currently playing DUSK, just started chapter 2. Still I don't get how distance influence bullet damage since sometimes can twoshot scarecrows with the supershotgun but at the same time it takes three if I want to use the supposedly more powerful hunting rifle
I haven't seen anyone talk about Peripeteia here yet. It's an
>first-and-third-person role-playing stealth game taking place in alt-history cyberpunk Poland. Inspired by immersive sims from Ion Storm and Looking Glass Studios
Looks like a mix of Deus Ex+Cruelty Squad and it takes a lot of inspiration from shit like Thief and Deus Ex, and I'm really looking forward to it.
I like the game, but it's not really related to the retro/boomer shooters
There's no "immersive sims" threads, and apart from maybe steam hidden gem threads, I guessed this is the only appropriate thread.
My autism doesn't let me play the demo, since it's spoiling myself the full game tbh, but it really looks like my cup of tea and I can't wait to try it out.
Two things I remember from playing the demo are the absolute joy of replaying the tower level over and over, and the absolute misery of playing the last level (the one with rooftops, a nuclear reactor and a fricking street filled with the most awfully coded tanks ever created) once. Cautiously observing it being developed is what I am.
I like the aesthetics for everything EXCEPT the main character: her in-game animu model looks awful, the drawn icon of her on the HUD looks like shit (reminds me of "how to draw anime" books you would find in book stores in the early 00's), and the hands holding the gun model are so fricking weird and long that it's causing an uncanny valley effect in my brain where I'm horrified by how similar-yet-wrong they look
when that game gets released I really hope someone puts out a mod to swap the models and HUD out
Have you seen the updates to both the HUD and the model on their tube? It got worse, all of it.
>Have you seen the updates to both the HUD and the model on their tube? It got worse, all of it.
fricking hell
It's going for the anime girls with guns audience but I agree. It's awful and completely out of place when compared with literally everything else in the game. I keep thinking it's a placeholder with each dev highlight they upload, but no that's what we're gonna get in the final product.
Aside from that I'm really interested in the game. It sounds quite ambitious for what I assume is a team of first time devs. Plus it's more immersive sims and those are always welcome.
Looks like one of those vaporware games you'd see on IndieDB.
Can anybody reccomend any good Quake II-like games? Or some mods for Quake II?
This game was fricking awesome
Quake III was good too, so bad Quake I was a boring shit
What's a good old shooter with satisfying pistols to use? I'm tempted by Soldier of Fortune 1 since that looks cool.
SOF1 holds up pretty well, I recommend it. The shotgun is the real star of the show, though.
I'm
and the pistols in Ashes are pretty good, the 9mm and revolver both feel good and seem like the main go-to when you don't have an excess of shotgun ammo or a big target that needs to die fast.
Thanks anon. Getting issues actually starting the game but I'll figure it out.
I honestly could not get into dusk. The hit impact compared to selaco, cultic was really bad.
>Hoards of Zoomies now pretend to care about retro shooters
>All the ones they make are fricking terrible
>"AND WE MADE THE PROTAGANIST TRANS :33333333"
>Some moronic homosexual meme man on israeliteTube shills it to his braindead audience
Civvie and his consequences have been a disaster for the shooter genre.
Take your meds
I hate civvie he talked shit about Witchaven.
that's what happens to literally any halfway decent old game nowadays, ecelebs make a video, zoomers flood parroting the talking points they saw on a video, then leave 3 weeks later without having played it, but discussions about the game are permanently ruined because those same points pop up every time
I think poor ol Duke was hit the hardest. Remember those zoomies that got ahold of the old DNF files and then immediately tried to get him to say "trans rights" or some shit like that?
No I don't remember. Sounds like your schizo ramblings to justify you being angry and le jaded
I also remember the devs coming here and personally trying to shill for it.
I think you know exactly what I'm talking about, lil zoomie.
>shill
Meds, now.
OH NO AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THEY'RE LITERALLY AT IT AGAIN!
Holy shit you dumbass zoomies just don't learn do ya?
>schizo shouts about nonexisting shit from his head
>immediately talks about his boogeymen
Buckbroken.
Sorry lil Zoomies, not giving (You)'s anymore
Try shilling it on /vg/, they love trannies over there lol
>scared shitless to reply directly
>zoomie
>shill
Damn, it was easy to btfo a dumbfricking worm such as you.
the guy you're replying to definitely is a schizo loser based on the amount of dumb edgelord buzzwords and memes he used to respond to you, but he's not wrong about the DNF 2001 build leak getting hijacked
after it was released, a small team said they were going to try and restore it/mod it into being a full game and were accepting applications, some of the people who joined then kept trying to inject modern SJW politics into the game, and after someone semi-doxxed them it turned out a bunch of the new people on the dev team had explicitly said how much they hated the IP in the past, so they were trying to corrupt and co-opt the project to either be something that appeals only to them, or to crash the project completely to ensure fans never got the game
the far-right and far-left can both go and frick themselves, I hate this "us vs them" mentality that both sides want to foster, it feels like no one wants to be reasonable anymore and people are doing this kind of malicious and petty shit ALL THE TIME
>More made up incel bullshit
Maybe try actually posting proof, you fricking dumbass.
>A fricking centrist
Lol. larping leftwinger. Frick off
>he complained about trannies and SJW's hijacking DNF2001?
>but he also said he doesn't like right wing politics!
>THAT MEANS HE'S A LEFTY!
meanwhile, back in the post you were replaying to
> I hate this "us vs them" mentality that both sides want to foster, it feels like no one wants to be reasonable anymore
way to prove his point, dipshit
All centrists are left wing you fricking idiot.
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/center
they're still working on it, I think the first level is mostly done
>I MAKE SHIT UP TO GET MAD ABOUT ALSO I'M LE OLDgay (YOU) ME
>civvie "frick whitey" 11
>strawman mouse
Get off twitter
>He ran
Concession accepted.
Playing Nightmare Reaper now
Really good
>even more dogshit graphics than og doom
>le diablo loot
No, thanks.
>Randomized weapons is Diablo loot
moron
>DUUUUDE YOU GET DUPER REVOLVER ANUS OF DOOM THAT DEALS 3X IF YOU DIALATE LMB FOR 3 TIMES WHILE CONSUME 2 BULLETS PER SHOT
>OR HOW ABOUT AK47 BUT IS SHOOTS FREEZING Bullets
Gtfo shiteater.
Malding moron
>malding
What kind of esl frickery am I trying to decipher here
>noooo y u jot liek shitty diablo tier cringe weapons
Frick off moron
Ranzomized effects and the fact that you discard all but a gun is great
It means you use a shit ton of weapons and not just one
>shitton of weapons
>this revolver with same model, gun sound and shit shoots normal bullets
>Same, identical revolver but it shoots 2 bullets per shot!
Cringe
Looks far better than Doom
The lighting is really good
I personally think the game went on for too long, and the procedural-generation for levels makes most of them fail to stand out.
Weapons are fun. Bosses suck. NG+ is unbalanced because you eventually get to a point where every enemy starts to 1 or 2 shot you.
Dusk made me get Boomer shooter fatigue. Couldn't even drag myself to complete it.
>Filtered by the best shooter in years
Dusk is actual anti-game garbage. It tries to emulate classic games in the cheapest way i have ever seen. Shitty AI, mediocre level designs, generic weapons, uninspired enemy designs, floaty ass movement and shooting with no weight to it. If i was some impressionable moron who never finished Doom, Unreal, Quake, Blood, Turok and Half Life i would probably enjoy it.
I see you didn't get past episode 1.
>pc finally shat the bed
>havent been able to replace it
>tfw it has been months since I've touched a boomer shooter
I feel so wrong, bros. Like a piece of me is missing.
This people really thrown all the level design and lighting lessons out the window.
Can we start making fun of people who say boomer shooter?
I hope so, there was never never need for such moronic term when classic and old-school shooters did just fine.
I don't like that term but I use it to make you homosexuals mad
>I make myself look like a homosexual intentionally to make others go mad
Truly a mastermind.
Looks like it works
>I'm gonna do things I don't like to trigger you!
Epic bro
I hate the way this game looks, which sucks because I'm not against the idea of a roguelite retro shooter
I hate the graphics as well, but it is my favorite retro shooter despite them
Hey, SOF question - I've installed SOFPLUS which seems nice for widescreen support and so on.
A couple of things - does it add a screenshot key at all? Or should I just add it as a steam non-game so I can F12 to take screenshots? Would that work?
Also - SOFPLUS seems to add a few extra graphical effects, if the menus are anything to go by - bloom, SSAO, DOF - but with them enabled I can't seem to see any changes other than slight slowdown on my laptop.
Ignore - I've found the key for screenshots and I've also turned off the extra effects, they didn't seem to do much except lower framerate.
God the guns feel punchy in this.
I feel like Ultrakill is a "muh success" because is the perfect game for zoomers with ADHD brains in need of dopamine.
You have 0 exploration but you're in full action all the time, with literally zero seconds between a death and being back into shooting. Even though they throw some secrets to fakely add some depth, the game would be better suited if it was a single arena type of shooter like Devil Daggers.
what's wrong with this? it just sounds like hotline miami or literally any arcade game
sometimes you just wanna kill shit in a matter of minutes and look cool while doing it. ultrakill serves that purpose perfectly. Also if what you're looking for is a simple arena/wave shooter the game has that already. it's the cyber grind mode.
>ZOOMERS ZOOMERS ZOOMERS ZOOMERS ZOOMERS
>I BET ZOOMERS DID THIS
>FRICKING ZOOMERS
You are balding 20 something incel, stop blaming zoomers if you already have your brain fried by pornography
>the game would be better suited if it was a single arena type of shooter like Devil Daggers.
Frick off moron
Today we can see how shitter accuses action game of having too much action. I bet ninja gaiden 2 wold make you shit your pants because of nonstop action
God I wish this website would stop breaking.
Soldier of Fortune is great fun. Been playing on custom difficulty:
>2 saves per mission
>enemy spawns: ridiculous
>enemy toughness: standard (with how many spawn, and considering the loop you get in where you shoot a bunch, your gunshots trigger an alarm, causing another dozen enemies to spawn, etc) anything higher was ridiculous
>carry weight: limited
It's great fun.
What are some games with this graphical style that are NOT fast paced fps games. I lioe exploration but dont like ling dialogue trees.
Gloomwood
OP's Pic rel, HROT, not as fast paced as say Amid Evil
This
HROT is a shooter but it's slow-paced and quiet besides some ambiance.
Any engines for making a retro FPS game?
Unity
Build
Any good boomer shooters on VR with proper VR mechanics (aside from Dr beef ports).
I've been playing the shit out of compound lately and now all I want is a game like Dusk in VR with proper VR mechanics like compound.
I was about to just say Compound when I read the first part of your post but looks like you already found it
I've been playing it a ton since it left beta, game is so much fun. I am pissed they took away my bow mutation though.
Prepare for ludokino boomer shooter sovl...
Looks nice
it's real
I need a game with the fluidity of a retroFPS but with ragdolls like FEAR.
I want to send my enemies hurtling.
>Impossible to talk about my favorite games because homosexuals always devolve into "LE BOOMER, LE ZOOMER" arguments.
I don't care if you're 10, 20, 30, 40, or even 50, stop acting like a fricking brat because someone older or younger than you likes the same games.
There’s a demo for a game called Cultic on steam and it’s pretty good. Basically it’s Blood set in the 70’s.
Plays okay but the artstyle is so bad I can't get through it.
I kinda felt like that was the best part.
To each his own I guess. It hurts my eyes personally.
Cultic is pretty fun but good lord that dynamite in it is trash. It's an insult to Blood's dynamite.
I barely used it but it did seem pretty weak. The pistol is all you need, anyway.
