Riot might be the only big established company with a genuine shot at creating a WoW killer. The lore and world are basically already made for them (WoW also had that advantage). They also have a huge, established, and loyal fanbase. Their funder Tencent is giving them no deadline and can provide nigh-infinite resources. They got the lion’s share of the Blizzard brain drain, so potentially a lot of experienced MMO people determined to make a better game. And they have a lot of vidya industry big names, first among them being Ghostcrawler himself, who led WoW through its best years, and has a great openness for communication with the players.
If Dragonflight doesn’t save WoW from its decay, the Riot MMO may end up being the one to give the coup de grace.

Nobody cares about trying to "kill" WoW anymore, Blizzard has been doing that on its own for years now.
Besides, Riot's MMO is still literal years from release at this point, nobody knows frickall about it so far beyond some of the staff. It's beyond premature to say it's going to "kill" anything.

WoW-morons also hate him because he had open dialogue with the players and responded on the forums and basically told them "No, your shitty ideas are shitty, we aren't putting your half-baked, poorly thought out, dogshit ideas in the game", which pissed off forum morons who thought they have all the answers on how to "fix" the game (aka make the game cater to their specific wants and needs) and got pissy when GC wouldn't bend the knee to their insane demands.
When GC left the decline was felt immediately, WoD was a piece of shit, classes got whimped and became boring builder/spender clones of each other, "borrowed power" bullshit started infesting the game etc
WoW-tards to this day still have ptsd over GC being based and telling forum posters with their shit "ideas" to get fricked and seethe about it non-stop.
We need more devs like GC who don't give a shit what dumb forum posters want and recognise vocal critics are usually just morons with agendas, the biggest reason wow is a steaming pile of shit is because to many devs listen to morons on forums and allow themselves to be bullied into changing a game to suit what these people want instead of sticking true to their own vision.

Don't forget dungeon finder and raid finder probably his biggest damage he could have brought to the MMO genre. If any new MMO came out and implemented it that game would have been DOA but WOW had 10 million subs by the time that shit was implemented so its only been a slow death as the uber hardcore playerbase can't replace their numbers as they quit/get burnt out or straight up die as all the newblood are stuck in LFR hell with no reason to progress past.

You're right, Minecraft did kind of take over the online open world sphere, because minecraft does what MMOs used to do, give players a massive playground to play in.
Every MMO now is so hyperfixed on rigidly curated questlines and hyperbalance that they all fail to capture that old feeling of playing an online roleplaying game because exploration was replaced by questmarkers and npcs spending hours spewing out exposition instead of giving you a simple quest to delve into dungeons with friends, and players have no hand in the world themselves as anything that players could potentially do that is amazing could be considered 'toxic' by your average redditor who never played a real MMO in their underaged lives.
