I had no idea Riot had fleshed out the lore so much. But I wonder, did they retcon shit? From what i remember way back in 2011-2012 or whenever it was the league lore was basically that the summoners were the real people and the champions were just summoned like in a table top games

ya summoners rift and the actual in universe "league of legends" were taken out completely since it limited what champs they can actually have in lore wise when you basically have all powerful mages that dictate everything
kind of like MTG. in the early days it had that sort of D&D feel, "(You) are a powerful Mage and the deck is your spells!", now you have all the Planewalkers characters that are positioned as the superheroes that rule over whatever colors of magic.

Yes but back then people didn't care and it fricked over the MMO before it even started development. Now they can either ignore all the world ending events and put them in "just around the corner" state like the game, do all of them at once which would be a huge clusterfrick, or become WoW 2.0 with every expansion being "Actually the previous big bad wasn't that bad, the new one is"
I honestly dont think continuity is that important in regards to previous established lore. The most important thing is that the story in the MMO is good and I think they will use the MMO as a vector for all the next games. Most likely the current games are already based on the current MMO lore like that single player games they made. Honestly they are doing a fantastic job from what I can see building it up
Yeah they will retcon most things, and details aren't important since nobody knew them to begin with. My point is people know about the bigger threats existance. Whichever gets chosen as the first big event will start a cascade of "what about X?". I think it has the potential to be good for a while, especially if Riot puts it as some sort of alternate universe and turns half the roster into boss fights, like a questline about hunting Jhin. The second things like Darkin, Void, Ruination or Mordekaiser becomes the big bad it's gonna go downhill.

One of the big world-ending event happened in the universe and the 2 major characters who entire lore revolve around that event didn't even show up because their skin don't sell. Instead we got a bunch of characters that have nothing do with the plot banter and be comic reliefs.

Also the lore has about 10 apocalyptic events just around the corner that are never allowed to progress, it's worse than warhammer

yes they do it every other day and it's unclear whether some of the stuff they show is canon
For instance they've funded a game by the guys who did Battle Chasers game earlier on, it's called Ruined King and it's an ok RPG I must say, but is the story there canon? Nobody knows. Their in-game event about the Ruination that had some kind of story arcs, VN(sort of) in-client for instance isn't canon(partially because it was shit and hijacked by narcissistic pajeet who made his self-insert save the day last minute, the pajeet was later fired for molesting women and troons at riot). They've done quite a lot of noise with Arcane but it may not be canon either(for instance recent sidegame about Ekko goes against it in some places - so which one is real?).
And yeah, the Summoners rift, summoners etc. isn't canon, completely retconned.

LoL isn't canon because nothing happens in it. When they removed the summoners they didn't replace them with anything, it's basically a "what if" 5v5s. The only canon part of it are the 3 voice lines per character that hint at the story (until they get retconed). Runeterra as far as I know is canon because it only adds few lines of exposition and some generic units for each nation (and the 3 voice lines about story per character, until they get retconed). The only canon story is whatever they have on their website (until it gets retconed)

League is canon as far as character background descriptions go. Everything else can change at moments notice, some people for instance say that Arcane isn't canon because had they said so then unresolved plotlines would have to be reflected in changes to character bios and that would spoil the season 2 or whatever but as for no basically no comic, cinematic etc. can be honestly treated as canon.

League's lore has been redone numerous times, chances are the MMO is leaning heavily on the newer incarnation of the story that focuses a lot more on the champions' interconnected stories. They've been hamming that up a lot more than the "out of world" aspect of summoners.

Riot never had an original idea or concept, the entire lore of the world is what a bunch of nu-californians came up with when given a video game with mismatched characters. From what I gather most of the stuff is allegories for real world stuff and/or the most generic fantasy tropes which feels lame.
I'm honestly curious to see how it turns out, this will be the first non-dnd fantasy world made from the ground up by circlejerking californians. At least it can't be worse than what the blizzard people have been doing, or I hope it isn't considering they poached most of their dev from wow's team I guess.
I'm still hyped for the game though, I just want a fun mmo to play with cool places to hang out in even if the story/lore is garbanzo beans.
They completely threw away that original story you're thinking of OP, "summoners" basically don't exist, the world is just the world and the rift is just a virtual battlefield, they've marketed the game the last 6-7 years entirely on the presumption that these characters interact in the real world when that was supposed to be a supreme rarity. But, they put out stuff like arcane and clearly that's doing well for them so whatever.

Imagine if Blizzard never moved Warcraft lore past Warcraft 3. Every single plot event was simply retconning a character’s backstory into something else without moving any plot thread ever. Also, as individuals get retconned, Blizzard would also make huge sweeping retcons to the foundations of the setting, like what factions are about or how magic works or historical events that effect tons of other characters. Meaning that at any time, half of the cast is dubiously canon at all or outright contradictory, even though they used to be, and are still used to sell shit to people. If you can imagine that then you have Riot’s approach to lore figured out.
