I have known Mr. Toriyama since I was a writer for Shonen Jump, and at the recommendation of my editor, Mr. Torishima, I decided to ask him to draw pictures for the game when we launched Dragon Quest.
In the more than 37 years since then, he has designed the characters, designed the monsters, and drawn so many fascinating characters that I can't even begin to count them.
The history of Dragon Quest has been with Mr. Toriyama's character designs.
Mr. Toriyama and the late Mr. Sugiyama were longtime friends of mine who worked on Dragon Quest.

I could see it, but I can't see people sticking with Super if they drag it out for long. Super's whole point was that Toriyama was writing it so it was a continuation of Z (though there has been 1-3 other spin-offs that had him monitoring/writing them?), but if they drag it out it's going to be bad taste.
It's better for them to finish Super ASAP and then if they want to spin off with the artist of Super or whatever, they can because then they don't have the "cowritten by Akira" line to go with.

V is the golden child of the DQ series right next to III. V in particular is a beloved entry due to the story telling. III while great is not like V due to the way party members work, but is still a good starting point regardless.
IV is a fine game too so play that one if you want.

It was my first game and I loved it. I was already a big JRPG fan though and part of DQ4's appeal is that it takes a non-traditional approach to JRPGs with how party members join you, I don't think it's as appreciable if you haven't played a bunch of JRPGs before.
I'd say III is the best starting point in the series, but you can't go wrong with IV.

Not only through his own work, but also through the work of 1990's developers who were deeply influenced by him, like Ken Sugimori. I just started rereading Dragon Ball a few weeks ago and it's still so good. Sometimes when you watch some old stuff you realize it doesn't look as good as you remember when compared to newer stuff, but Dragon Ball's art is still so good. The art is crisp, the panels are full of life, the backgrounds are really detailed, and the battle choregraphies are so good, creative yet easy-to-follow, there's never a panel that leaves you confused on what happened. You look at this then you compare to currently running shonen and they're still worse than DB's art. The jokes also still land and feel fresh (as in, they haven't been copied a dozen times by later manga). I honest to god think Dragon Ball is a timeless classic that will survive far beyond the generation that grew up with it.
