not every game is meant to be like that, also D2016's ai was made to corner you if you played it like COD or even halo, no game is ever going be always your way, you sometimes have to learn something new.
You can probably play your way more in Doom Eternal than most shooters explicitly because it puts resupplying in the hands of the player rather than putting them in the hands of the level designer. You can play long range running away with the ballista/pbolt/chaingun/lock-on or you can close in with the SSG and blood punch and you can swap between them pretty seamlessly because of how fast swapping is
It's always been there, anon, just boot up Gzdoom, load gameplay mods like Brutal Doom, Gmota, Russian overkill or something to your liking and play your favourite wads.
Chainsawing for ammo in Doom Eternal and weapon breaking in Zelda are both fine mechanics. The arenas in Doom would be too stressful without this mechanic.
