Especially with adventure games, In their heyday they were the best looking games available at the time. The gameplay revolves entirely around sitting there and studying the art. They would never have taken off as a genre if everything looked this bad.

No, this artstyle is more like "Flash-Cubism" which is a term I just made up.
The art work uses primarily angles and curves because it's generated not by digitizing an image, but generated with math. This was easily done with Flash software hence my name for it.
And that art of using more flat colors/gradients with curves and straight lines instead of more organic line art done by hand.
The cubism comes from the emphasis on making the proportions incorrect and playing with angles.
It's fine to make ugly art but it has to be aware that it is of something ugly and be ugly to convey something meaningful about human psychology etc. to someone whose idea of beauty hasn't been subverted by being told trannies are beautiful.

Cutout animation can be amazing if you play into its strong points and put just a little bit more effort into it, like some tv animation and games like Rayman. The reality however is that most cutout animators are illustrators that somehow slipped into this position and lack the passion for animation in the first place.

I helmed a production with almost two dozen animators once and over half of them were just storyboarders or artists with no higher understanding of animation. There was one guy, ONE fricking guy on that team who was an honest-to-god animator with passion.. ironcally both of us got inspired to become animators by Newgrounds back in the day.

This art style is fricking terrible not only because most people find it ugly but, by the standpoint of making a video game, it is simply one of the worst art styles to use.
This artstyle is damn near impossible to animate well since the limbs are made way smaller than the torso, in a way different from how people actually are.
So every animation needs to be done in a way which matches this ugly style, meaning no animation will look natural and human.
The face is also so over-stylized as to make it no emotion can be seen from it.
The eyes being just black dots mean that emotions like happiness, anger, fear, ya know-basic shit, shut isn't doable.

It was partly Lucas's own fault for completely botching the move to 3d in MI4 and having to put the IP on hiatus for nearly a decade before TTG stepped in to do a new MI that only succeeded in not being worse than MI4 yet still having fricked controls but in a different matter.
Did any P&C have a graceful 3d transition? Only ones I played were MI & Broken Sword, and Broken Sword fricked it up almost as hard as Escape with controls that made the general gameplay far slower vs. typical mouse clicking.

I played 1, 2 and 3. 3 I played a little as a kid and I loved it. Having played 1 and 2 to completion like 15 years later I can say that I absolutely prefer 1 and 2 to 3 which ruined the way I imagined some of the characters with it's voice acting. 3 also aged a lot worse looks-wise than 1 and 2. I couldn't even play the 2009 version
I played 3 when I was about 8 and only the beginning when you're stuck on the boat as I was too stupid to go further. Pretty sure there's no one but Guybrush there. The cartoon style was the most original thing I've seen at the time. Then ~10 years passed and so did most of my kid brain memory of the game. Went on a classic point-and-click binge and spent loads of hours playing 1, 2 and then 3.

This is more like cubism, but like flash cubism. Done with scalable vector art which is easy to program.
They also managed to use a highly stylized minimalist look and make it so fricking visually busy and jarring that it conveys less visual information than the original games in cga mode.

Especially with adventure games, In their heyday they were the best looking games available at the time. The gameplay revolves entirely around sitting there and studying the art. They would never have taken off as a genre if everything looked this bad.

No, this artstyle is more like "Flash-Cubism" which is a term I just made up.
The art work uses primarily angles and curves because it's generated not by digitizing an image, but generated with math. This was easily done with Flash software hence my name for it.
And that art of using more flat colors/gradients with curves and straight lines instead of more organic line art done by hand.
The cubism comes from the emphasis on making the proportions incorrect and playing with angles.

Cutout animation can be amazing if you play into its strong points and put just a little bit more effort into it, like some tv animation and games like Rayman. The reality however is that most cutout animators are illustrators that somehow slipped into this position and lack the passion for animation in the first place.

The face is also so over-stylized as to make it no emotion can be seen from it.

It was partly Lucas's own fault for completely botching the move to 3d in MI4 and having to put the IP on hiatus for nearly a decade before TTG stepped in to do a new MI that only succeeded in not being worse than MI4 yet still having fricked controls but in a different matter.
Did any P&C have a graceful 3d transition? Only ones I played were MI & Broken Sword, and Broken Sword fricked it up almost as hard as Escape with controls that made the general gameplay far slower vs. typical mouse clicking.

You can tell the background artist had nothing to do with the character artist. They clash and compete constantly, the background pops out better than the characters which is ludicrous. My eyes are drawn to the details like the arches before the actual intended focus of the scene.

I played 1, 2 and 3. 3 I played a little as a kid and I loved it. Having played 1 and 2 to completion like 15 years later I can say that I absolutely prefer 1 and 2 to 3 which ruined the way I imagined some of the characters with it's voice acting. 3 also aged a lot worse looks-wise than 1 and 2. I couldn't even play the 2009 version

I played 3 when I was about 8 and only the beginning when you're stuck on the boat as I was too stupid to go further. Pretty sure there's no one but Guybrush there. The cartoon style was the most original thing I've seen at the time. Then ~10 years passed and so did most of my kid brain memory of the game. Went on a classic point-and-click binge and spent loads of hours playing 1, 2 and then 3.

Aside from the original game there is a remake that has dubbed dialogues and high resolution graphics with more cartoony aesthetics, although you can also play with the DOS graphics.
If you don't care about these features just play the original, they're both the same game.
