due to the massive increase in system resources windows has compared to a lightweight linux system, it is simply not suitable for a portable PC
if you have 16GBs of ram shared between the system and the GPU you can't afford to have 6 of those go into the void because windows decided to start the telemetry scan
also, the set of features that valve has developed for the deck (quick resume, steam cloud sync, in-game TDP controls, etc.) just make it a better user experience

Ngage was a failure because they overproduced for a market that wasn't there and they were in damage control since the start with claims like this https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nokia-says-n-gage-launch-a-success/1100-6077184/ saying it sold 400k in just 2 weeks, but then getting rebates and sales just a few months after because retail was desperate to clear stock, and with third party reports of it selling only 5k units in the first week in USA https://www.eurogamer.net/news241003n-gagesales and this is on top of spending millions on advertisements and making deals to get games on your platform. That and they also put out a second model that also underperformed

        Anonymous

Yeah, no the Deck is a great machine but it is not ready for the common consumer, incompatibility issues, bugs, and no way of really knowing if the game will actually run the way you want, even if verified.
Games crash often, storage problems, it needs more work.

Also my brother is a huge normalgay and he fricking loves his. He doesn't even touch desktop mode and that's kind of the whole point of why the deck is as big as it is over these other UMPCs. The deck is easy enough for them to get into.

            Anonymous

Yes, for a PC, but for the console market it is not ready, and those bugs can't be squashed by throwing more power at them. Those problems stem from its best feature, being open, it simply cannot take the place of any console, it is too complex.

              Anonymous

The steam overlay makes it super easy and it is only going to get better, nearly everything just works, very few need minor tweaks and I've yet to experience anything that outright doesn't run. The first iteration not being ready isn't the point, it's what it means for the future. Valve has thrown their hat into the ring, the only thing keeping sales where they are is they're not marketing it at all, they're not putting it into any retailers, and they currently can't even make enough of them despite that. It's going to be interesting to see where it goes from here.

                Anonymous

                >not putting them on retailers
Wrong, it's not on retailers where it is available on Steam, other places you can get them off the shelf.
And hopefully you are right, this thing is fantastic already.

      Anonymous

to reach switch levels of success, they will have to fund someone to create exclusive titles that people would want to play
switch gained popularity because of botw, and eventually mario odyssey, smash, and splatoon 2
what is the use of these overpowered consoles if they dont have anything to play besides stuff that can already be played on many other devices?

      Anonymous

In the short term, frick no, nothing's getting close. I think it's eventually going to be significant enough that a lot of PC development/porting is going to be done with them in mind and might eventually become the first thing some babby thinks of as "PC gaming".

Meanwhile Volvo offers a good umpc aimed at enthusiasts with basically no fanfare whatsoever.

Not that any of that has an impact on the lifecycle of the deck tho, it lives and dies by the hardware performance, and we are ways off from average new vidya not running on it. Ofc troons dream of it dying because of no hw sales, but that's as likely as a troony passing.

Key takeaways from all recent handhelds:
Trackpads are a must for people who actually understand their utility, but most people still don't know how they can be used
Most PC users still don't even know the extent of customization that Steam's controller API allows
Back buttons are one of the biggest game changers for customization
Hardware is pretty good for 95% of games, but that last 5% includes some of the newest titles that massive swaths of normies want to play
The next generation of APUs should be a real performance uplift vs what we have on the market now

Which further stresses the need for Valve to actually revise their hardware. They should've quickly adopted the 7840u. It's a marvelous chip and at 20W, absolutely demolishes games at 800p. Put on a big battery, some good fans on that and you have a generation worth of upgrades from the OG SD.

          Anonymous

Probably not worth the time and money when Strix Point next year is going to make Phoenix look like a joke.
A 50% perf uplift in some areas is massive when looking at benchmarks, but in reality, in game performance might not translate that to the player in a meaningful way. 30fps at low settings vs 45fps at low settings isn't exactly groundbreaking. In a lot of cases when power constrained the difference between Van Gogh at 15w and Phoenix Point at 15w isn't even that high.

Strix has new GPU IP, Zen5 CPU cores which is a brand new arch family, its on a new process node as well.

            Anonymous

Strix is still RDNA3. Zen5 CPU cores is definitely not going to be the same jump as the Van Gogh cores to the Phoenix cores.

But sure, you can wait in all eternity for better chips.

              Anonymous

Strix is RDNA3.5, arch and cache changes vs RDNA3. More CU in every SKU at every power level Zen5 is about 25% faster per clock compared to Zen4 as well.
Phoenix Point was a paltry uplift over Rembrandt. Strix Point is a huge uplift over Phoenix Point.

doesn't matter until the bandwidth problem is solved. 12CU and 100CU are still going to have the same performance when you only have 100GB/s of memory bandwidth and no L3$ to assist

                Anonymous

Memory bandwidth isn't the issue, its power limit
Bytes per flop a 14-20CU RDNA3.5 IGP with LPDDR5 7500 is still comparable to many discrete GPUs.

                Anonymous

The Series S has a GPU with similar compute ability to the 680M and comes with over 2x the memory bandwidth. 100GB/s is not nearly enough for the 780M or 785M

Or go look at 3DMark scores, where 6800Us with faster RAM beat 6900HXes and HSes with higher power limits but shitty RAM

                Anonymous

The Xbox Series X has 0.046 bytes per FLOP, the Deck's IGP 0.054.
The issue literally is not bandwidth, it is power limit, because these mobile parts aren't capable of sustaining their peak throughput under heavy load, power balancing cuts clocks way down.
I know more about this than you do. Don't try to bluff your way through an argument.

And the Series X (and S, and PS5) still doesn't have enough memory bandwidth at times.
                >I know more about this than you do. Don't try to bluff your way through an argument.
I own a 6900HX and have tested it at various power levels and it doesn't make a difference because there isn't enough memory bandwidth to keep the thing fed. There's a reason every GPU maker is putting big caches in their architectures.

                >I own a 6900HX and have tested it at various power levels and it doesn't make a difference because there isn't enough memory bandwidth to keep the thing fed.
What a laughably stupid and empty statement. Why did you even bother typing this out?
512 ALUs at 1.6ghz is 1.64TFLOPS. 128bit PHY with 5500MT/s memory is 88GB/s. Thats 0.054 bytes per FLOP. Does that GPU clock stay at 1.6ghz? No, no it doesn't. It isn't a fixed clock rate, it varies based on load. Power and thermal margins are shared with CPU, and when the CPU cores are loaded it can easily drop down to 1ghz. Thats now nearly 0.086 bytes per FLOP. This utterly destroys the 6900 XTX which at reference config only has 0.02 bytes per FLOP.

Does the 6900 XTX perform worse than Van Gogh's IGP? No. No it doesn't, you nonwhite moron.
Owning a product doesn't mean you understand anything about it. I own a Porsche, that doesn't mean I'm a race car designer.

Just writing moronic lies and bluffing through your teeth isn't something a smart person does.
APUs aren't magic, they do not scale any different from discrete GPUs from the same arch family. The RX6400 discrete GPU and Rembrandt APU family both share RDNA2 arch. They have the same number of CU, same ROPs as well. The RX 6400 however has more memory bandwidth, it also has the benefit of a 54w TDP all to itself not shared by anything. It performs across the board ahead of Rembrandt's IGP, and its not because of the memory bandwidth, it simply can sustain higher clocks in every scenario. If you lower the power limit it will perform on par with Rembrandt's IGP at the same power level within single digit percentages.

There was a thread on OCN comparing figures from Computerbase.de and a couple other sites when the 6400 officially launched. Everyone immediately made the comparison because APUs always attract spergs and poorgays.
Computerbase.de was the reference for the Rembrandt numbers in a ASUS Zephyrus G14 with 6900HS.
I don't feel like logging in and digging through my post history to find it.

What are you trying to imply there? LPDDR5 is the fastest low power memory standard on the market.
There is no other solution to provide high bandwidth to an IGP while consuming only a couple watts of power bar HBM which requires an expensive interposer on the package and the IC has to be purpose designed with a high density HBM PHY.

Strix Point is a N3 TSMC part at least for the mainstream die. Big departure from N4 which is just N5 with some performance boosters and no real change in area scaling. Its a full node shrink.
Phoenix vs Van Gogh has twice the GPU cores competing for the same power budget. Its actually pretty impressive that Phoenix manages better performance within the same envelope.

LMAO who told you this? What sort of moron shit is going on in your head. There are millions of laptops in the wild powered by Phoenix Point APUs. The last few Adrenaline releases have game specific tweaks for them, the Phoenix family has been supported in drivers since last year.
ASUS having shitty OEM firmware for the ROG Ally does not mean AMD is lacking driver support on their end for the chip.

My chinkheld has a 65Wh battery so at 20W, I get more battery life, quieter fans, cooler CPU than SD at 15W.

This, despite it having a smaller body than Deck too.

        Anonymous

15W is the default TDP for both Ally and Deck and both have the same 40Whr battery. Chink handhelds have even larger batteries than both. The Deck's chip is simply out of date compared to the 7840U

Why do they keep shipping this shit with Windows? Do they never learn? There is reason why most gaming devices are either using a Unix-based system or something else specifically tailored to the device.
Windows fricking sucks for console gaming and even more so for handhelds. Even XBOX isn't running on Windows but a specifically made system software with the current version being based on a very debloated and optimized Windows 8 core.

Why are you using it while fricking MS refuses to use it?

Weird how people treat the Steamdeck like some kind of innovation

The Switch and 3DS are using a UNIX-based OS
      Playstation 3,4,5 are using a UNIX-based OS

Everyone has been doing this for many years. Windows was never designed for anything but desktop PCs. Only with Windows 8 did MS try to turn Windows into a OS that can be used on many different devices - mostly tablets though - but that experiment failed.

Those aren't open systems so nobody gives a shit.

The point is that people treated the Steamdeck as something special for not using Windows when its actually the norm for gaming devices.

          Anonymous

Not even remotely comparable. Consoles are locked down walled gardens that are purposefully designed to hide the OS from you.
The Deck certainly isn't unique because UMPCs have been a thing for quite a long time, with Windows and Linux both. Its unique because its the first such device to be well supported by a very large company. All prior UMPCs were one off devices with incredibly spotty support mostly from fly by night startups nobody had ever heard of before.

It doesn't matter if its walled-off or not. The thing is that nobody is using Windows for gaming devices. Not even Microsoft is using Windows for XBOX.

        Is it really that impossible?

          Anonymous

          Its all about power consumption.
Most people don't really understand just how constrained mobile hardware is. The highest performing APU right now is the 7940HS, 35w TDP, nominally the chip underload will stay under 35 watts power consumption. If the OEM configures their system the right way and ticks the right firmware checkbox these chips will turbo and allow themselves to pull just a bit over 70w for brief periods. This is a common behavior in the laptop market. Even a ton of cellphone chips do this, consuming up to 10 or 12w for brief periods, averaging 4 to 6w average load when the CPU and GPU are both taxed.

Do you want high performance in a mobile device? It costs power, and that means absurdly low battery life. We're going to need a few more node shrinks to deliver this sort of performance within sane power limits.

my one and only issue with the steam deck is the battery reading capacitor. shit never stays at 100%, and even after properly re-calibrating it the device will jump from 100% battery health to something fricking stupid like 87%. I don't plan on RMAing, and will more than likely just replace the battery to see if it's the battery, or capacitor since it's pretty difficult to discern between the two, but I am more than adamant that it's the actual firmware causing this issue since it's such a wide-spread issue, and because I don't actually have issues keeping a charge, or charging quickly. shit actually pisses me off so god damn bad, because of my OCD.

      Anonymous

      Try this:
      https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/v15he1/psa_if_your_deck_is_draining_from_full_to_0/
Unfortunately I got the same problem too.
Another guy suggested doing the 3rd point 2 more times to be safe.

        Anonymous

I actually did this over the course of 3 days of repeated attempts making sure it fully drained in the bios, and even waited in front of my steam deck until it fully turned off on the bios quickly plugging it in so it wouldn't automatically turn off after more than a dozen attempts at trying to get it to fully drain, and not automatically start when plugging it in, and today it DID show at 100% battery health, and as soon as I restarted it the device went back to like 87%. I am pretty adamant about it being a firmware issue, before it's a legit hardware issue, but I have already saved the cash needed to get a new battery, and ifixit tools needed to replace it. The issue isn't the charge, or anything(rarely it doesn't charge correctly), but it has been frustrating, and it's my only legit issue with the device. I otherwise love it, and want to extend the longevity of my device as much as possible. It could even be something as stupid as Valve using a cheapo battery reading capacitor, but it's more than likely the firmware.

          Anonymous

I also think it's a firmware issue for me too since discharging the battery took a lot, if it was a faulty battery it would've been ran out sooner.
Still hoping SteamOS 3.5 will change this since it's taking a lot to come out.

its irrelevant, anyways. valve WANTS a steam deck killer to come along so they can stop making steam decks with their own money. whats a steam deck killer going to have on it? well, steam. a direct connection to valves bank account with your credit card details saved. every steam deck could blow up tommorow and they wouldnt give a frick, theres 12 different companies pumping out devices on their own R&D budgets, using their own money, advertising it own their own dime

and every single one of them promotes "steam compatible". its practically the first thing every company mentions.

        Anonymous

gotta disagree on that. not even the anon you're replying to. if they didn't give a shit about selling their devices they wouldn't be selling refurbished decks. I haven't ever seen that from a company like sony, or xbox, and if it's a thing outside of retail then I'm actually going to be really surprised, but the truth is Valve inexplicably struck lightning in a bottle whether they intended to, or not, and I don't think they're going to waste the opportunity of growing capital through these devices. they definitely want competition though since everything else for the next couple years will be inferior, and an affirmation as to why you should go with a deck, before an aya product, asus product, or whatever the frick is even in the OP with its shit ergonomics. my only actual complaint about the deck is the battery capacitor, firmware, or literally the battery. battery health is fricking stupid on this device.

damn that's wild, but it just aligns with the idea that Valve is taking their console as seriously as Sony, and Xbox. didn't know Sony, and Xbox sold refurbished.

Yeah it has to be. Literally nothing has changed with charging, or charge times, and yet it shows a lower battery health % so I'm pretty sure with the next update it will unfrick itself, but still it SHREKS my OCD hard.

they are only taking it seriously because no actual steam deck killer has arrived. the steam deck sells at a loss, they make their money back on the steam store. not having to sell another steam deck, at a loss, and having other people make steam deck killers on their own dime, then putting the steam store front on it is clearly the best option

anon even though my comment is kind assholish lets be kinda realistic here. if they were losing money they'd have dropped it like their alienware PC, or their steamdeck controller. this device is actually useful as a console. I can play F.E.A.R and S.T.A.L.K.E.R on a pseudo-controller that just so happens to be a gaming device, I can work on my device when it comes to work-shit, and I can also just use it to shitpost, and browse YT. Beyond that the ergonomics of the device are excellent, and me, and people like me are continuously finding ways to make things that people thought could only work on WinOS work on SteamOS. Until a literal 1:1 wumao copyright avoiding paralleled copy of a Steam Deck comes out there is no "Steam Killer" actually available on the market. I am saying this as someone who had disposable income, bought one on a whim, and fully had the intention of refunding if it was something that wasn't meeting my expectations. I really love it, and already have saved up to upgrade it both hardware-wise, and cosmetically. I use it more than my desktop at this point, and really see a future where it's my main gaming device. Hell like a year ago I brought it with me to a family meetup to play smash with the kids, and the other adults late at night, and they all loved it. I convinced a few to consider buying one. Don't know if they listened, but they kinda heavily considered it when I was reading degree related pdfs to further education related to my major since some of them are EMTs who are in a truck for most of the time, and the others are firefighters who are constantly traveling, and traveling with a desktop in a suitcase is not optimal. It's also cheap af for an APU based UMPC since most APU PCs run for 500ish, and aren't even portable, but are small enough for travel.

This is only true at launch. Over time costs come down. The PS3 eventually became profitable even before the first hardware revisions, theres a couple in industry firms that published articles about it. You can still find charts of BOM over time. The PS4 initially sold at a slight loss, and was profitable about 6 months into consumer release. No big player has ever sold hardware at a loss long term.

I paid more for my desktop, and I've been using my steam deck which is significantly cheaper than said desktop, and whatever fixes I need to apply to it overtime is also cheaper than my desktop. I'd say Gabe was probably talking about the initial price, but even then it's actually reasonable compared to most APU based PC's that are prebuilt, or are planned to be built up. They are absolutely making some meager amount of profit off it, or they wouldn't continue to sell it, or remotely have the prospects of selling some kind of spiritual successor is my honest opinion.

Valve didn't make that Alienware system, friendo. Dell did. Alienware is a sub brand of Dell.
I don't believe the Deck is selling at a loss either though, definitely not at this point. Doesn't really have an insane BOM compared to anything else and its been in production for a fricking long time now. Even the $400 model is probably profitable on a per unit basis hardware alone.

Huh didn't know that, but makes sense why they'd drop the alienware desktop they had previously. Definitely believe though that those 64gb models are making money due to the ssd swap that you can do like you said.

you'll be waiting a long while until a successor to the lithium ion battery happens. not even trying to be a shithead. it is what is is. i wish the steam deck had a slightly higher quality battery too. even tried to find substitutes like the HAL effect joysticks.

I don't get it, have the people who make these devices just never tried using Windows on it? Like putting windows in it is just an afterthought for them after designing the hardware. Windows is simply not functional in this sort of application and it just doesn't work.

Who is insane enough to spend, I don't know, $1000 on a Chinese product made by a Chinese corporation? I saw a review of an ayaneo that was being shilled here the other day, and the guy didn't even finish the review and the screen was already fricked.
