Running Windows 11 means literally every keypress you make is logged and sent to Redmond. They can also take screengrabs of your desktop, follow which websites you access, execute arbitrary code on your PC; et cetera. None of this is true on Windows 7 or even 8.1. Microsoft's new business is espionage aand that is why they're so desperate to get everyone to "upgrade" to a Windows that has a permanent backdoor.

For a convenient, recent list of hardware combos that are known to play nicely with linux/proton/wine right out of the box so I'm not stuck needing some obscure workaround driver for my specific mobo/GPU before I can even settle down to learning how shit works at the most surface level. Also, I'd like an autism file browser that's willing to abstract the displayed structure so that my drives are listed in the x: format of windows and treated as distinct entities in the folder tree instead of child folders within removable media.

Literally any CPU and an AMD GPU. RDNA 2 works great, RDNA 3 works great, etc. Mobo shouldn't be a problem either unless you're trying to do obscure shit like GPU passthrough in a VM.
        >Also, I'd like an autism file browser that's willing to abstract the displayed structure so that my drives are listed in the x: format of windows and treated as distinct entities in the folder tree
You choose where to mount everything. So you can have /mnt/windows, /mnt/ssd, etc. You could even make it /mnt/c, /mnt/d, etc if you really like that format. Good enough?

The thing is, once you understand what you're actually doing to set regions properly in Linux, not only is it super easy to automate when you launch, but you can also do it without affecting the entire system (unlike Windows). I've found playing moonrunes games in Linux works well.

Stable. Switched from Win7 to openSUSE Tumbleweed like 2 years ago.

      >installation was easy and quick
      >all i had to do was download mpv Media Player, Steam as well as wine and wine/protontricks
      >90%+ of the games i tried worked just out of the box
      >getting FF XIV to run was annoying but that was less related to Linux and more about Square Enix account system being complete dogshit
      >made me switch from Steam to the non-Steam version and everything there just worked with the xiv launcher
      >even lets you install all those plugins easily if you really want to

Worst thing that happend was like a year after where i updated and that somehow bricked my system. But openSUSE allows you to rollback into the old kernel so i just did that and waited a week before trying to update again - after that everything was fine. Outside of that Chromium broke for like a week unless i reset it every time after system start - now it works again just fine. Not like i used it much to begin with as i am mostly a Firefox user tho.
As far as games go some older games were annoying to get running but some of those issues happend on my old Windows PC as well. Games like Battle for Procyon aren't made for modern mouses so you have to artifically decrease the dpi or the game is unplayable - I also had to use wine to frick with the registry cause the 3dmodels won't load otherwise - But again: This is an issue that also appears on modern Windows. I never played a lot of multiplayer games to begin with so things like drm/anticheat stopping me was never an issue for me.

I ran Mint on my laptop for a few months first just to get used to it. This was like two years back. The initial switch was alright actually. As soon as I tried to do things though like get an external drive mounting on its own or figuring out where I wanted to install standalones, it felt frustrating. After a month or two of digging in, I felt much more comfortable and ended up liking a lot of the ways Linux does things as opposed to Windows that I didn't really recognize before. Happy with Arch on my main desktop and laptop now. Never going back.

The thing I miss the most is VR (still sucks on Linux with little support, ALVR is helping but it's a mess) and straightforward game modding (feels like for most serious modding you need to relearn a lot each time).

Linux mint, no problems at all because i was already used to using terminals on Windows thanks to youtube-dl and gallery-dl.
      Emulators worked out the box.
Getting Proton to work has been quite the experience though, i decided to dual boot LTSC instead, Switching OS with a SSD takes 3-5 seconds anyway.

reminder that it's chromium that's dropping support for windows 7, not steam. steam uses chromium elements for its UI. valve has no reason itself to not support 7 for longer, but it's not viable to rewrite/rework all of steams u.i for .75% of the user base. this is actually one of the reasons valve has pushed for Linux for a while, so that something like this can't happen.

sure, but it's a liability from valves perspective. someone does continue to use it, some security vulnerability gets exploited, some moron on windows 7 loses and cries on the steam forum about losing his 3 f2p games and his 12 grand in cosmetics, yadda yadda. or just announce your dropping support. which is what they did.

chromium itself announced it dropped win 7 basically the same time. anything that integrated chromium is no longer supported on win 7. this also means Microsoft edge, amazon silk, and Samsung internet is no longer supported. but literally who is using those on windows 7.

Windows 10 usage goes up whenever Chinese goes up, at least when talking about steam. Do no, chinks are overwhelmingly using windows 10
