Rise of Nations

I've been playing Rise of Nations and I like it quite a lot so far. I really can't think of any rts with similar gameplay. Maybe Empire Earth 2 since it seems to lift some elements from this game. I won't be the first to say that it's a shame RoN fell into obscurity and we didn't get any sequel (unless you count Rise of Legends, but to me it differs too much not only in term of setting but also gameplay).
What's your thoughts about this game? What are your favorite nations to play as? For me so far it's:
>Egyptians
Because early restrictions on food production annoy me and early economy bonuses are always strong. Unique units doesn't seem particular amazing tho.
>Turks
Because I love all that aggression focused bonuses
>Germans
Just because they have cool looking swordsmen
Honorable mentions:
>Persians
Cool architecture and elephants. Plus auto-spawning caravans are useful because I keep forgetting about producing them.
>Indians
Same as the first sentence above and I have soft spot for Mughal Empire
>Aztecs
Nation suited the most for early aggression, although I haven't yet figured out the optimal way of early rushing or is it even worth it in this game

i can't tell RoN, EE and that third game apart

RoN has roads, EE has Goldeneye tier SOVL face textures, and no-one posts about Empires:Dawn of the Modern world.

RoN has more fluid border mechanics, feels less bloated (the unit progression is awesome) and looks better than EE imo

Is there a way to stop games going into the modern age from becoming a giant slog?

    >Combat in the early midgame just puts you so far behind that it's not even worth it
    >Combat in the late game is just rushing nukes

    wow. incredible game.

      >Not limiting advance to the Enlightment

Cap advancement to Industrial Age and the nature of capped but unlimited resource production will provide an authentic World War I experience

        Industrial is shit, worst age.
The leap is far too huge from Enlightment and all architecture looks way too fricking modern.

Sure. No harm in it. You'll be butthurt about... the lack of MOAR after completing the Cold War campaign, though.

For some reason i remember disliking the conquer-the-world portion of the game, but i don't remember exactly why...

Map is too small, and the number of turns is even smaller. You end up with one faction per continent by medieval, which is boring as all frick.

    Egyptians, because early wonder spam.
Chinese, due to their bonuses and the fact you got more of them.

    >Inca
lot of money on maps with enough mountains
    >France
    can easily heal units
    >Germans
apart from the units they have a good resource buff
    >Japanese
    cool units and buffs
    >Romans
can spam Heavy Infantry easier and the extra wealth helps with building cav to counter archers

It will appeal to neither side, because AoE gays don't appreciate "total war" mechanics, while HoI gays already have the better "economy mobilization, research race and unit micro" simulation.

I used to play this a bit autistically. My starting capital would be a mega central city with a bit of every building. If there was a big mountain or a spot between a group of mountains, even better if there were woods and oil nearby, it would be my industry city. I'b build cities close to my border towards enemy territory to be military outpost cities with forts and towers around the edge and lots of military buildings. I'd connect them with trade routes then build a 'trade' city if there were any crossroads, they'd be a hub of trade, farms and universities. I liked building a connected civilisation before researching nukes and blowing up all the opposing cities and sending in swarms of stealth bombers and fighters to obliterate everything before sending in the ground troops to hunt the remaining citizens down. I'd leave the captured cities as ruined husks compared to the glory of my nation.

I remember the Russians being pretty fun. Sniping enemy supply wagons and letting your attrition delete the enemy for you

Like this game a lot but it needs better diplomacy mechanics. Late game devolves into excessive micro as you annex all the lands of defeated enemies. If you could instead vassalize them so they keep their lands and fight against your enemies, it would increase my enjoyment of the game a lot.
