Rise of the Ronin

>comletely forgotten one month later, no news from team ninja
Honestly if they survive this blunder they should follow the Stellar Blade's example and go back to coomer games like making a beatemup DoA or a Ninja Gaiden with all b***hes playable from the start instead of Hayabusa.

    I liked it, but it lacked polish, and some of the open world stuff was repetitive. They picked a bad time of the year to release it, and of course being a PS5 exclusive did not help.

    I wonder what happened to team ninjer. Nioh 1 and 2 were both really good, and then suddenly wo long fricking SUCKED. Rise of the Ronin looks way more like wo long than it does either nioh. What changed?

    • 1 week ago

      israelitey Tecmo happened. But also Hayashi left in 2022 and Yasuda's management of TN has been disastrous to say the least, just because he made Nioh doesn't mean he'll be a good manager. Getting Yamagiwa was a dumb move too, just because he was one of those who produced Bloodborne doesn't mean he should be given so much control (he's the one that has a big hand in Ronin and Wo Long)

      Nioh was in development for a decade, Nioh 2 was just a content pack for Nioh. Since then they're rushing new games(+3 dlc every time) out every year

      • 1 week ago
        Anonymous

        To add to that, their DLCs genuinely improve the games. This means they aren't simply moronic, they just release unfinished products and you should wait for complete editions before you buy anything from them

        • 1 week ago
          Anonymous

          Wo Long wasn't improved that much, you just can do more stuff and weapons are more distinct which should have been the case from the very beginning. It's still the same boring parryfest and they also made magic almost useless against the hardest enemies because they are immune to elements.

      They're doing the same as always, people forget the years before nioh 2 they released ultimate alliance 3 and both fire emblem and hyrule warriors, sometimes they'll make a 10 most of the time they'll make a nice 7/8

        That is way better than their current run. Also, originally HW was 2014 and FEW was 2017, for side games that's not bad at all.

              What recent team ninja game flopped outside of SOP, wo long sold a million and although ronin wont hit their moronic goals it seems to have still done well enough.

              • 1 week ago
                Anonymous

                A million is not a lot. Both Nioh games sold 2-3 million each. And ronin definitley flopped. Pretty sure it sold even less than WL considering it was on only 1 platform and came out on the same day as DD2, which was massively more popular.

              • 1 week ago

                Do you think TN are making triple A games? how is a million sales not a good result for a low budget game they got a gamepass deal for?

                That's the point. Their run from Hyrule Warriors to UA3 is all games that sold well (all of them crossed 1m) whereas SoP flopped miserably (no official sales data confirming 1M, wikis literally shilling shitty playtracker data as sales even though we know how inaccurate it is)
                Wo Long (hit)
                Ronin (flop)

                It took both warriors games took more than six months to hit a million sales and ua 3 took 3 years for them to report 1.6 million. In that time they also made dissidia which flopped.

                KT are moronic. Why did they expect a janky low budget AC that only on 1 console to sell 5 million?

              • 1 week ago
                Anonymous

                5 millions or not, it shows they expected Rise of the Ronin to get wider appeal and audience by going open world, because Elden Ring did it so it must be a winning move
                Rise of the Ronin sold horribly though, likely worse than each Nioh game, so it's by all means and purposes a flop

    Playing atm, this is my review after 10ish hours.

    Game feels more like Wo Long than Nioh. It's probably better than Wo Long, but still not very polished and has the same quantity over quality approach as other TN games.

    Combat's still good, but lacks depth compared to Nioh. The game is focused on parrying but the parry is also your heavy attack. I like this because it makes combat less passive then other games designed around counters. That being said, not having a proper heavy/combo ender makes the combat feel even more simplistic. Your basic moveset for every weapon is kinda crap and it takes a while to unlock good movesets for every weapon. There's actually a fricking absurd amount of weapon types and every weapon has atleast 3 movesets. It blew my mind that Odachi and Greatsword were different weapons. Sabres are probably my favourite so far. The "english" style of fighting that's just throwing knives at people is really fun and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be sublte political commentary by TN. I don't feel like I can properly critique the combat without getting a full set of two weapons with atleast 3 styles unlocked.

    The fricking transmog system is 10/10 though and almost completely redeems any other issues I have with the game.

    Overall 6-7/10 so far, I'm engaged enough to keep playing.

    It's not very good unfortunately. Open world was completely pointless, there's absolutely nothing to do except for quest markers. If there's no quest marker in a spot, it's because there's a quest that you do later that makes you go there. Not a single secret to be found. Removing fantasy made combat dull and boring - no demons, no big bosses, no magic. Blade flash or whatever ki pulse is now kind of sucks. A full gauge does not give much stamina back. The stance swap move does, but you can only spam attacks/stance swaps on grunts for the most part who are already trivial. Combat is the only decent part of the game but you only get to do it every 15m because you're busy traveling the other 80% of the time.
    they should just make nioh and then shut down once they've decided they've made enough

    I've been playing the frick out of it, but holy shit it's a long game. I'm like 50 hours in, not sure how far in the story I am. The game has a lot of replay value, well I say that, maybe not a lot but some. You can just go back in time and do different things to see the different outcomes. I don't know, maybe it's just me and I'm playing it slowly, it feels very long.

    The gameplay gets pretty monotonous and boring after awhile because it's just the same thing over and over again. You just have to get good at parrying, and I'll admit that the game doesn't ever seem to get easier, pretty sure it has level scaling in it because I'm level 40 and enemies still whoop my ass. One boss did HALF MY HP in one move, literally 50%, and I even watched it on my HP bar.

    • 1 week ago
      Anonymous

      I went through every map's outpost before doing story and was overlevelled to the point that i could win against every boss just by parrying some of their attacks, trading with my martial arts and healing when my health got low. It's somehow both team kekja's easiest game and potentially almost impossible to play if there was no way to mitigate the incoming damage.
      Not sure about the replay value because the Midnight mode is a snoozefest after you level up a bit.

        Ronin is pretty much a "fixed" Nioh if you take seriously every moronic criticism:
        open world instead of missions;
        can jump, crouch and swim;
        more serious story with the main character actually interacting with npcs and influencing the story a bit;
        almost impossible to stunlock or hit and run bosses;
        weapon collisions instead of phasing through attacks;
        monsters are boring and easy they got removed;
        companions are actually useful and can be controlled
        and so on.
        Too bad that the end result is somehow worse than bot Niohs.

            >nobody asked for Assassin's Creed open world
            A lot of players asked for an open world, probably not realizing that the implementation won't match with their imagination.
            >but none of this is useful in combat, unlike, say, Sekiro or Elden Ring
            Jumping works with oxtail and aerial style of greatsword, swimming at least prevents you from instantly dying after falling in the water, crouching is an accessibility feature because a lot of sonybros can't walk using the analog stick.
            >at the cost of turning combat into a boring and moronic taking turns with unfairly hyperarmored enemies

          I like the mission structure of nioh. Is this legit a criticism? It fits the formula so well since there's a lot of farming in nioh so you can just rush through smaller missions to bosses. It's all so tightly packed.
