>rly want a job as a game developer
>apply for lots but dont get any luck
>mom (im 20 and lived alone for 2 years, but my relationship with my parents is good) tells me i should apply to a school as a plan b
>really don't want to go to school anymore, but do it anyway
>actually somehow get in
>now i either have to be unemployed, work a wageslave suicidefuel job or go to a school i don't want to be in
what the frick do i do, i don't remember the last time i felt happy in life. sucks too cuz i ( and others think i) am very gifted and skilled, but then i'm just unable to do anything with that skill.
/tttt/ related cuz i'm transgender

sounds ruff OP. last option is obviously the "correct" one of the three though.
what would you rather be doing, though? like what's your (attainable) ideal life? anything you can do to work towards that?
i'd just like to live with my boyfriend and work a job that i enjoy (either programming that i kinda enjoy, or programming specifically in unity that i REALLY enjoy)
i already have the best possible school, there isn't a school i actually want to go to
wish i could
Work a part time and go to a school you want to.
You can land a solidnprogramming job no degree
I did it
You just have to put your foot in a lot of doors
Applying everyday for months got me a job in 2 months
Just go to school for your moms sake because shes providing you housing
And in the mean time submit at least 2 job apps a day
>Just go to school for your moms sake because shes providing you housing
i've lived on my own for 2 years
>And in the mean time submit at least 2 job apps a day
how do you do this without killing yourself? my cover letters always suck so i'm guessing that's why nobody wants me lol
apply for smaller entry level jobs that you think you can do. QA testing, junior programming, any junior position honestly. or find jobs in similar fields, don't just try games studios. spam apply even if you don't quite think you're right for the job.
i dont know anything about... programs, but its interesting how much shit you can do without accredation in some fields as long as you have the actual skill + a lot of doorkicking or connections lol
>working in game development
it is not 2011 my homie
will you be studying game dev or is this school for something different
>rly want a job as a game developer
No you don't.
t.gamedev slave
a wise man (a random guy i was sitting next to on a plane) once told me something that i still think about:
>in life, a job can (most of the time) be only 2 of 3 things
>fun, well paying, legal
>you can have 2 of them, but (almost) never all 3
>so might as well just get a well paying and legal job and spend ur free time actually enjoying life
so rather get a gamedev job than a mcdonalds job, more money
college? uni? no frickin clue what it is in english but yea higher education
true, probably should. cover letter still is an issue, idk how much it being absolute shit affects getting a job?
All devs know gamedevs have no free time. It's the bottom of the dev totem pole.
what kinda content is on your cover letter? i change mine depending on the type of job so its relevant (QA testing= was invited to test X game, have experience testing in X, made games and play them regularly etc). it's gonna be the first thing they read so you'll want it to be professional, coherent and relevant. 1 A4 page max
right now all I have is an AI generated thing I made and slightly modify for each application, it's literally so awful lmao, i need to learn how to write my own cover letter template thingy
yea i've got passion lol, i've made plenty of hobby projects (never finished one, awful at finishing stuff) cuz it's really fun to program game mechanics and stuff
i had a website cv, but someone close to me who's older than me told me i should make it a pdf instead, so i did that. also, am i moronic, what's the difference between a CV and portfolio? thought both were just stuff to show off your work?
A CV is a fancy way to say resume. It's typically used by people applying for very high level positions and includes a detailed description of every educational attainment, certification, and previous position you've ever held. You are too young to have a CV lol
A portfolio is a selection of your work. I remember Josh Sawyer saying that studios do take protfoilios seriously so maybe finish up some stuff. Uncompleted projects aren't very impressive.
i have 3 finished projects, 2 school projects (1 solo 1 group) and a gamejam project i did with 2 other people
+ a million unfinished random works
CV should showcase experience, education, skills etc as well as relevant personal info and hobbies. don't listen to other anon, you can very much make a CV im 21 and I have one.
cover letter should start with who you are ("im a student studying X looking for work in X sectors/ looking for a job as X"), then relevant experience ("i worked on this project doing X work") then any other experience that might showcase your skills/discipline. sell yourself as someone thats driven, eager, down to earth, focused etc. say that you keep up with the game industry, say you've done a gamejam they love that shit
portfolio should be a showcase of your work, i have PDF and online versions. even if it's just making a professional social media and posting work on there, that counts.
Gamedev positions are taken because of passion though. They are famously not well compensated compared to other industries. A software engineer in gamedev is taking a major pay hit just to work on vidya games.
It's hard to justify as you get older unless you have a ton of creative control at your dream studio. And even then it gets hard to justify because real life gets increasingly expensive as your living expectations increase.
Oh and gamedev crunch is insane. Those guys gets worked to the bone when release date rolls around. Delays cost millions of dollars and your health is worth less than the boss' money.
Not saying you shouldn't do gamedev but there are much cushier jobs out there that will hand you a bigger paycheck. Liking video games does not mean you will like making them.
also try making an online portfolio if you haven't already. direct them to it at the end of your cover letter/cv so they can actually see what your skills are.
other anons are right though, not only is the industry a b***h to get into, it's tough and doesn't pay that well. last QA i did was min wage bruh
>20 years old
>going to school
Huh? Do you mean college?
College is a school dumbass
>how do yoy do that without killing yourself
The same way you do 4 years of college probably
It truly is gruelling I don't challenge that
>cover letter
I skip that shit. Any job that wants me to beg is inherently disrespectful
school’s not gonna be fun, but it’ll give you more defined credentials for future jobs, and could essentially force you to finish projects, which could also be good for getting jobs
