After working for home for a while, having to commute again and having to spend lunchtime in a place you don't want to be besides to work is a pretty shitty feeling compared to being comfortable at home and being able to have your own schedule.
I spend 4 hours commuting since I work in the next town and I would kill for home office, but I wasn't blessed with it.

      Anonymous

I live 3 blocks from a train station that can drop me off 3 blocks from my former offce, but it still took 50-60 minutes to commute EACH WAY to and from work, which my work does NOT cover the expense for (-$150/mo, and add 40 hours of unpaid time to my work schedule every month)
In addition to this, I need to actually eat lunch while at work since I have to skip breakfast in order to be out of the door by 6:30AM, and I either need to buy food that travels well (expensive) or spend money on local food places (even more expensive).
While WFH, I can just meal prep soup and put it in the microwave every day and eat a bowl of oatmeal and dried fruit/nuts for breakfast with a cup of coffee. I can't travel with a container of soup on the crowded train.
-$5-12 a day extra for expensive travel food or eating out (-$100-$240 a month).
So, when I'm forced to go back into the office I'm effectively taking a $250-$400 pay cut AND sacrificing 40 hours of my life in commute for NO BENEFIT.
I'd be better off quitting and finding a better job.

The post that made 4reddit seethe, but unfortunately it is true.
In my experience the work from home warriors are almost always the weakest employees productivity wise. We recently sacked one because he was dumb enough to try the "im extremely busy" line after turning down chargeable work that would make him have to go outside. Then 2 days later we basically told him to go do some different job and to hand over the project work he was meant to be working on so someone could take over, and he had basically fricking nothing done.
Idiot didnt know how to do his job either.

Please anons how the FRICK do i find a work from home job? I have 15 years of work experience it should be "enough" to get my foot in the door at least on a resume.

What remote job do I apply for? where? who the frick is hiring for remote jobs right now??

I can lie and "fake it till I make it" just fine, BUT WHAT JOBS DO I APPLY WHERE

          Anonymous

I dunno, you figure that part out. If you don't want to do call support, then just don't bother putting applications in for that. Put your resume in for everything that's remote that sounds worthwhile or doable to you. And put in a lot of applications until someone wants to contact you. That's all it is. If you have 15 years of experience like you say you do, that's a lot of things to reword and alter to make yourself sound amazing.

Workers are lucky their bosses think they need to be in the office.
If their bosses thought the jobs could be done from home, they'd be outsourced and people would have no jobs at all.

WFH is not an alternative for most jobs in the west. Either you show up at the office, or you accept the same wages as what people get in the poorest countries on earth.

Nice try, all of my college projects have been specifically training large language models to take over more jobs and be more accurate in certain fields. You can think what you want about whatever google or twitter chat program you are using, but those aren't anything to commercial level AI that is actually trained to take your job and not just give broad and general answers.

        No unironically it can't.

        1. You need a US sponsor for pma devices.
        2. In the EU you have to have a person who is responsible (this ruling out anything else.. wouldn't shock me to see some moronic start up us an ai chatbots and get slapped with a huge fine).
        3. Management, at all levels, doesn't want to accept responsibility for when shit goes sideways. Ai chatbots are known to be unreliable and when it gives a bad answer that leads to million dollar fines...do you think any chatbots contract is going to last? I've asked all the chatbots very basic questions about the process of getting medical devices onto the market and they give hilariously wrong information.

        >B-B-BUT IT'LL GET BETTER
no they won't because they chatbots companies won't want to deal with being sued for giving bad information leading to huge fines

AI will not replace all workers at same time. AI can help a worker to finish more jobs than before and some workers will be layoff.

a lot of big tech firm had flexible working hours for workers even before covid and perf is still reviewed based on your contribution not how many hours was wasted in offices. But I guess zoomers have a kind of false job security and think they take advantage of WFH. Now PPP loan is gone, if you are really good at your work, a lot of companies still hire contractors/specialist who can work from home, while others have go back to normal.

This shit is just going to cause even more brain drain in the game industry and make games even fricking worse than before.
You already had to be borderline moronic to work in the game industry when it was already a huge pay cut over other types of dev. But now it's also going to require living in a $3000+/month rent city when other fields don't. Everyone but the bottom of the barrel is going to leave the industry

I was talking to a friend just a couple days ago. He used to do game dev... game devving is too much of a time sink, it can be interesting but games have become so bloated that ultimately it just sucks working on them and the result is increasingly crappy games.

Quit my previous job during their years-long "hybrid pilot" last year and got one that's fully remote. It would take a lot of money to get me to accept an offer anywhere that isn't fully remote at this point.

I think the disgruntlement comes from two places. The first is the obvious benefits of remote work. I fill up my tank way less than I used to. I have several hours back in my week because of commuting, and several more due to the fact that I'm not trapped in an office taking an unpaid lunch hour there. I can actually do laundry, or go to the bank, or whatever other stuff I'd usually do after work or on the weekend during my lunch hour. Then there's the fact that I get to make lunch in my own kitchen, shit in my own bathroom, control my own thermostat, etc. It's just a huge quality of life increase. More money in your pocket now that it's not being sucked up by gas and more time in your day now that it's not being eaten by a commute. It's pure win. Call them job perks, if you want. Obviously people won't be happy if you take away job perks for no reason.

The second is that there *isn't* a reason. There's no, or very minimal benefit, in many businesses, to being in-office at all. The pandemic years were record-breaking years for these companies. Anecdotally, when I returned to the office I spent most of my time fighting for video conference rooms because the vast majority of my meetings were remote anyway. There was a period at my previous job where I was on a three-person team, and we were all on different continents. Nobody can really give a good reason why a physical office is necessary, and that causes resentment, and that causes people to quit.

COVID was a game-changer here because it forced companies to admit that the office isn't necessary and hasn't been necessary since the invention of the conference call, and that genie's been difficult to put back in the bottle, although companies are trying.

      Anonymous

If my company tried to do the same I'd quit unless they gave me a 20% raise to go with it. I aint gonna lose money to have the 'privilege' to work in a worse environment.

The fact that I don't have an hour long commute to work anymore is massive. Being able to get chores done during the week like you mentioned means I can spend more time relaxing on the weekend.

There are a lot of issue from WFH.
Work from home or "WFH" practices within the global energy sector have been unwittingly called into sharp focus by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

That's after the securities regulator charged the husband of a BP employee on Thursday (February 22, 2024) with insider trading and profiting, from information he overheard while his wife was working on a deal for the energy company from home in 2022-2023.

The SEC alleged Tyler Loudon of Houston, Texas, made $1.76 million in illegal profits having heard several of his wife's conversations about an acquisition target of BP and bought shares in the target firm.

At the time, Loudon's wife, then a mergers and acquisitions manager at BP, was working on the company's takeover of TravelCenters, a Nasdaq-listed full-service travel center operator in the U.S. According to the SEC, Loudon purchased 46,450 shares of TravelCenters stock having overheard his wife's conversations without her knowledge.
