I hated GTA 4 on release, I stayed playing San Andreas for a few months before getting addicted to Halo. I still to this day don't understand how people consider it the best in the series. The only redeemable thing about it was the euphoria physics it used.
They are still good in terms of how detailed and rich they make their worlds, they are the best there is and Red Dead Redemption 2 proves that. But they do need to emphasize a lot and tune up on their gameplay, that is truly where they lack talent.

Yeah if they could come up with something genuinely original, fine, but they never do. I still think ancient Egypt is fertile ground for games of all genres. Or Babylonia. Or the far east. But either devs are lazy and lacking creativity, or their company did market research and they believe only certain settings can make money. Generic Space. Medieval Europe, and United States 1870 to 1890. That's it. You get no other options.
Which is why despite how much people shit on them (for many valid reasons), I still enjoy Assassin's Creed games
it's where said entertainment was made, northern africa and asia should and have probably made some media with those themes, Babylonia fricked though, you're never getting that unless you want western, or asian or northern africans to interpret that you're never getting Iraq to make stuff about Babylonia

I dont know if you guys remember but a long time ago somebody made a truly original game called Sacrifice. It had a wholly original fantasy setting filled with monsters never seen before.
It performed poorly despite critic praise. It never saw a sequel and no one in the industry has ever claimed it inspired them. Thats what happens to new ideas. They dont make enough money and they die quietly. I think the Starcraft universe is still plenty untapped but Blizzard doesnt seem enthusiastic about doing much more than 3 RTS games that are basically the same and resting on their laurels.

My favourite thing is big studios with flagship titles letting smaller teams form for smaller-scale side projects
Ubisoft of all corpos does this, and you get great games like Steep and that robot climbing series
