Some Rogue Traders have literal armies of commissars under their command which they will sent to their deaths without hesitation. Nobody gives a flying frick if a commissar dies. Some Rogue Traders have successfully fought and killed Inquisitors and had enough political power to clear their names, even though they did obviously questionable shit.

It's such a bother though. The high lords of terra might take me off their official Christmas card list and serve wine only thirty thousand years old. I shall stick to nodding, smiling, and quietly having my assassin team deal with them in a properly deniable manner.

Rogue Traders are also the sole reason why Imperium gains a net plus of worlds. You think Imperium just sends in a fleet to scout some systems and take them? Nah, it is too resourceful.

The entire task of finding new worlds to inhabit is solely tasked upon the Rogue Traders and thus is why some Rogue Traders possess actual solar systems of wealth. People underestimate just how much political power RT have in the Warhammer 40k setting.

RTs also have a voidship. That carries continent-fricking macroweaponry. You can say that Imperial Navy admirals have fleets of battleships but the Admiral will most likely be stuck patrolling Imperial space while the RT is most likely to be out there in the boonies with his vessel that will orbital bombard you to hell if he feels like it.

Also the RT can probably ask the admiral to send a fleet through a place if he expects xeno trouble and let Imperial dogma handle the rest.

The Rogue Trader in the game has a decent escort ship, like a big frigate or destroyer by todays standarts, as flagship.
Even the especially powerful Rogue Trader involved in starting the first Imperium-Tau war used a light cruiser.
So Rogue Traders have decent ships but rarely something capable of blasting continents unless they have some archeotech and exterminatus grade weapon in some safe.

It isn't a non-sequitor. You were attempting to mock commissars for being unable to prevent Rogue Traders from committing treason. But a Rogue Trader that commits treason is not fulfilling his duty to the Emperor, which includes not committing treason. A commissars duty is to execute the traitor or to die, either way a Rogue Traitor does not have any authority because he is a traitor.

              Anonymous

A Rogue Trader is a peer of the imperium, a Commissar is not. Either way the Commissar still has to fight through an army of armsmen to try and impose judgement on the RT, and the Commissar is not part of the Imperial Guard command structure.

"Wandering at large throughout the Calixis Sector and the Koronus Expanse, these lavishly appointed warships are the result of a rare collaboration between the Imperial Navy and the Ecclesiarchy. Each one is the ultimate expression of the shipwright’s craft, with fresh and sweet scented air, lovely trappings, pleasing, soothing sounds piped over the shipboard vox, kilometres of stained glass and workstations made of precious stones and rare alloys. Crewed and captained by condemned and penitent Imperial Navy officers, voidmen, and the occasional Rogue Trader, penance ships cruise as system patrol craft, protecting Imperial (and specifically Ministorum) assets in places where the Navy cannot commit the time or resources to do so themselves.

While surrounded by staggering opulence, the penitents are able to enjoy it only from afar. Beneath each supple uniform a penitent wears a harsh, chafing garment, a body glove made of materials that abrade the skin and cause constant pain whenever the penitent moves. They wear filter plugs in their noses so that they may not smell the sweetness in the air, sound-deadening earplugs to keep out the soothing sounds of the vox, and thick gloves that allow them to go about their duties while keeping them from touching the pleasant surfaces of their workstations. Each ship is permanently sealed, with the only escape being death or the fulfilment of the penance. To enforce this, the outer decks are patrolled and defended by savage servitors called arco-flagellants, each a penitent in their own right.

While the majority of those suffering this privation do so voluntarily, taking up by the penitent’s garb as a way to repent for their transgressions before they go to their God-Emperor, more than one Naval Officer or Rogue Trader has found themselves locked away in a penance ship against their will.

          Anonymous

          Both
Commissar is great, anything that improves action economy is S tier and Commissar basically gives allies a free Officer bonus turn once per fight
A warrior commissar wants to pair up with one other melee fighter who can benefit from At All Costs, but frankly you really want to have two melee fighters in your party anyway so you can get melee superiority buffs
The statline is great for Warriors, and the abilities make you a sort of off-Officer for free since Commissar's ability costs 0 AP
          It's literally free action economy

idk Anon, I'm running the maximum dodge and enemies just seem to say "no it's zero" whenever they want. Ironically at this point you're probably better off running a team of Sanctic Psykers all using voice of the Emperor so Heinrix can max your damage reduction to 244% with Pasqal intervention.

Basically, Unfair is all kinds of bullshit and it really feels like I'm just praying my warrior meat wall lasts long enough for my Operatives to get that 50-80 damage per shot groove. Also occasionally things will just break and usually to your disadvantage. I know for a fact that if I dropped the difficulty down any, I'd faceroll everything. In Beta my Assassin basically couldn't be hit, that said, it was easier to stack buffs and almost anyone could easily reach 90 HP, now only Cassia can easily do it, but it is still possible with the others.

Aren't blanks so impossibly rare and so required by certain special services within the Imperium for their own purposes, rogue trader would just be told to frick off when trying to get one, and it would be wise for one to actually frick off, because you don't want to antagonize assassination department or, emprah forbid, whatever is responsible for blanks used in golden throne security?

Nobody except the literal highest authorities of the Imperium can tell a Rogue Trader to "frick off", when does it get through your thick skulls? Not even an Inquisitor can just command them around.

That's not quite it, but that would be a spoiler.

Inquisitors are literally the highest authorities inthe Imperium and can in fact command them around

Wrong on both accounts. Some random Inquisitor is not higher in rank than a High Lord of Terra, not even close, and the Inquisition has no direct authority over Rogue Traders.

                Anonymous

a high-ranking Inquisitor can absolutely frick up a High Lord's day, and Rogue Traders are 100% subject to their authority. They get a lot more leeway than most, but if an Inquisitor thinks an RT is up to some mischief, the Warrant won't protect them.

                lol no
Inquisitors are basically sector level and below. They're wandering magistrates to troubleshoot and cut red tape.
The High Lords are so many levels above them it's like a detective trying to walk up and arrest the president.

                Anonymous

It's even funnier because one of the High Lords is the highest ranking Inquisitor himself, so that detective can't call for help either.

No, they cannot. They do not have the authority to do so. At best they are on just enough equal footing that Inquisitors can ruin their day by trying to work parallel to them, but they cannot just say 'do this'. They have far, far, far more resources than an Inquisitor can even dream of and money buys power.

Rogue traders are on par with Inquisitors. They have carte blanc to do nearly anything. An inquisitor can investigate them if they''re a threat to the imperium but thats it

                >Ultimately, ‘authority’ means nothing. Inquisitors can theoretically execute anyone who disobeys them - bar the Custodians who are wholly exempt from scrutiny - this includes Rogue Traders. We had this discussion about Inquisitors and Chapter Masters. Yes, technically the Inquisitor has the ‘authority’ to command the Astartes to war, but in practice a wise Inquisitor knows that it’s best to ask nicely or risk vanishing inside the bowels of some Space Marine ship, never to emerge again (a common fate for those Inquisitors who poke around in the Flesh Tearers or Black Dragons affairs without asking nicely).
                >It’s a matter of who fires first and who can keep on firing if it comes to war.

There you go, hope this helps.

the Inquisition has access to resources comparable to RTs, and they can requisition Space Marines and stuff much easier than RTs who basically have to get lucky if they want something high-tier like that

Some blanks escape the notice of the higher ups in the Imperium and end up in lesser posts where they are nonetheless able to serve a vital role. Now whether one could be a rogue trader without that coming to light is another matter.

Another thing is that blanks tend to be hated and feared by everyone because of being blanks (it's like not having a soul, very unnatural for normies and even worse for psykers). Would be funny to have a blank RT though.

I'm trying to play my guy real pragmatic-like. Lots of evil shit happening everywhere, but oh well that's the imperium, I guess. But then I got to the final part of that funeral and these guys are fondly reminiscing about all the shit they did to that servitor woman and her family, the son is laughing about how fun it was to kick her while she shambled around their home as a servitor who still had her memories and was able to feel pain, and my guy suddenly had an epiphany, a revelation from the god emperor himself.

Seems like 2 bounty hunters could benefit if we all mark preys and get the trait where we still get bonus if any ally kills one. Critical chain only seems good for melee heavy party. But some of the assassin traits I think I can restore AP on kill so combined with an officer ult I could just shoot infinite 1ap attacks at 20 trash mobs and if they each hit i just keep going.

And vanguard seems tanky but both subclasses seem kinda meh for warrior.

I understand roleplaying, but there's still that part of metagame knowledge of being aware that basically any chaos follower is guaranteed to end up as fodder for upper parts of the food chain, which doesn't allow to take it seriously. The lower cutoff to not end up as fodder is level of named chaos marines, what hope can average tard have? If there's "good" (from player's egoistic perspective) ending for heretic, it must be asspull of the same scale as secret ending in WotR.

      my path was get cassia
go to governer planet. go to electric church there. go back. decided to wrap stuff up
go to pirate ship in bottom right. you can sell them some stuff for reputation and take some items (none looked good), I sold most stuff to the guy next to governor and got some cape and helmet instead.
went to prison planet. super easy low lvl mobs. warden went crazy and its just like on the planet sewers with the strange lens.
theres a 'good' dagger you can find there (for that low level area).
And in the bottom left is a crashed dead alien ship with spikes you can find and loot for some cargo and not let the crew die if you pass a skill check. not even a place to land or explore.

Fair enough. Can a sanctioned psyker ever go unsanctioned? Fricking Idril always has better shit than me and it pisses me off.

Aside of that, would be cool, but it would also turn frickton of game mechanics upside down so they decided to not bother.

You might have a lucky encounter and find one in the wild. Blanks are less obvious than psykers. It wouldn't be out of the question for a RT to have some blank on his bridge in case of vile xenos sorcery. Maybe train him/her to be a concubine so he has a reason to keep the blank around at all times.

For things to improve for humans, humans would require to do a long list of things that will make 40k setting stop being 40k setting. The entire point of that setting is humanity being in the state of relative post-apocalypse, out of which it can no longer get due to extreme environmental pressure from various factors. For example, it is locked out of any society which isn't obscurantist theocracy that beats you on your head with prayers every day, because one of existential threats employs mental corruption as main vector, and nothing else can counter that on a large scale.

    funny thing?
this kind of discussion would totaly happen in universe and in lore and would look the exact same
yes the inquisitor would think he has the authorty
    the RT would disagree

  110. 5 months ago
    Anonymous

    >It’s a matter of who fires first and who can keep on firing if it comes to war.

the Inquisition has access to resources comparable to RTs, and they can requisition Space Marines and stuff much easier than RTs who basically have to get lucky if they want something high-tier like that

Like what, the GKs? They work WITH Ordo Malleus, not serve them. Deathwatch does their own thing and like the GKs, they work WITH the Inquisition, not serve them.

It's exactly the other way around. RTs are the ones with ridiculous resources, while the vast majority of Inquisitors prefer to act alone and in small numbers.

This, Inquisitors tend to have less personal power than RTs and CHapter Masters since the former have fleets and armsmen and the latter have battleship grade fleets and supersoldier monks for armsmen. That's why they need to ask favors.

      See

THey don't have much actual authority outside of the MEchanicus, but if an Archmagos asks it would be wise to say yes unless you're absolutely sure you're okay with all your tech suckstarting a shotgun when you need it.

Both the Grey Knights and the Deathwatch are literally the military arm of their respective Inquisition Ordos just like the Sisters, they're not independent entities

"Military arm" doesn't mean "b***h of every member", you'd have to prove that the RT you're not happy with merits attention beyond the 1001 other things they fight.

Why pyromancy? ALso you can get another discipline as a psyker?

Fel and WP, nothing else matters. There's a talent so you always go first round, so Agi becomes nowhere near as important, and Int does literally nothing for any of the Officer skills, so you can disregard the first two replies that you've gotten.

Did anybody play the RT ttrpg? I've played Dark Heresy, Black Crusade, and not Imperium Maledictum and I've never seen skills get this high so easily.

I did. RT gives you really high base stats from your origin path. MEanwhile Blacked Crusade and Only War give you a higher skill cap (+30 instead of +20, not including Talented). DH is the only one that keeps your skill bonuses low and that's because the GM is expected to give you low difficulty rolls for trivial shit.

In the RPG they hand out skill advances like candy so yeah.

Right, I remembered just after posting.

Pyromancy has a frickton of melee buffs, almost as many as Biomancy. Pyromancy works amazingly well with either a Warrior or Soldier
And yes, you can get new Psyker disciplines, it takes an ability slot but the talents alone are often worth it
My Soldier Arch-Militant Pyromancer has Telepathy and Sanctic, and often kills everything in an encounter within 1 or maybe 2 turns because he can easily use 4 Psyker attacks per turn and the combo of the Pyromancy and Telepath talents is absurdly OP for damage dealing Sanctic I only took for the +psy level after every heroic action

WHich telepath talents are good for damage? Unfortunately I won't be doing it this playthrough but I will probably try a warrior RT in my next run.

Also which Conviction is best for a psyker? I thought it might be Heretical but I'm not sure.

                Pain Channeling and Aftershock.
Pain Channeling makes it so that when you kill something, any excess damage you deal beyond that thing's HP is dealt to the nearest enemy as Mental Damage, Aftershock makes it so that any time you deal Mental Damage to an enemy, it takes half that damage again the next turn.

So if you fire off a Lightning Arc which deals 40 damage into a group of 4 20 HP minions, each of those 20 hp minions will take have 20 excess damage, each of which is transferred to the nearest living enemy. Meaning whoever the nearest living enemy is would, in this case, take 80 points of excess damage.
And then Aftershock means that same enemy takes another 40 damage the next turn.
There's no range or cover limits to Pain Channeling, so you can delete half the encounter with it.

A lot of the Mental Damage attacks are single target, so Aftershock is usually single target only.
But Pain Channeling isn't at all.
Also if you have Backdraft talent from the Pyromancy, that bonus damage will be included as excess damage for Pain Channeling.

So what is a good multiple target mental damage attack?

                Anonymous

Well shit. Now I need to stack Pyromancy on that too.

Exterminatus is destroying all life on a planet, if you want to rake a planet's surface with bigass cannon shots, even a single macrobattery would do. I'm not saying RTs can exterminatus planets, but they can easily deliver a North Korea vs Seoul level of bombardment with macrobatteries.

                Yep, it's hilariously powerful.
Even burning DoT will trigger Pain Channeling if it kills something, it's just an amazing skill in general.

So what is a good multiple target mental damage attack?

My favorite is the basic psyker staff Lightning Arc, although later in the game any of the high damage Pyromancy powers work very well too.

Me too lol. Learned of it after I got the inquisitor, and you gotta take it for the PC, too. Obviously.

Fel and WP, nothing else matters. There's a talent so you always go first round, so Agi becomes nowhere near as important, and Int does literally nothing for any of the Officer skills, so you can disregard the first two replies that you've gotten.

            Anonymous

you still want AGI so your actual turn comes as soon as possible and you can pop out more buffs

You can't go more than once per turn, it's borderline irrelevant so long as you go first.

isn't it an extra turn akin to your own ability? I could've sworn you go twice

I meant only "once" by default, which is what Agi is for, of course.

That's only for resistance checks, sadly. You need WP for the WP bonus on your abilities.

Every stat is worth it but as an officer in the back, you'll probably avoid WS and Strength, as well as most likely Intelligence unless you don't want/have a skill jocket. WP will help you resist things, Agility will help your speed, Toughness will help your HP and resistances, Perception gives you more hit

The only virgin in the party is the Sister, who are Brides to the Emperor. You're wealthy enough to buy a harem of gorgeous virgins at every port, so the chastity of a partner shouldn't be important.

Sisters are daughters of the Emperor, not brides. They will just as easily see it as their duty to have 2 dozen children with you because more babies = more imperial subjects

All of the romancable women are virgins except Jae. If Yrliet wasn't she would've mentioned some children, since Eldar pretty much exclusively have sex to procreate.

Both cassia and Yrliet are virgins, the screenshot being posted around about Cassias "previous lovers" is a fake made by shitposters.
She was locked in a space station and treated like a child, not even allowed to see visitors to the station

Does Characteristic Training not push a skill past 65? Taking it just results in nothing. For example I'm using it on fellowship, every other CT shows the +5, but fellowship its just empty. It doesn't stop me from taking it, nothing just happens.

Is there a way to consistently debuff someone's willpower or resistance tests in general? I'm getting real tired of these frickers resisting Cassia's Point of Curiosity. I've had some hilarious moments with it, especially once you get the staff that lets you cast it twice per round. Things like drawing a bunch of people towards my trio of melee monsters and then using it again to drag them away, prompting a slew of AoO attacks. But goddamn is it frustrating when they resist it.

Telepath has shit that debuffs WP tests if you hit them with Psychic Shriek IIRC.

Alright, just finished up everything I could do on Footfall and now I've got some choices to make. Which of these planets should I go to next? Last act I ended up going to the planet that was under siege first and every single fight was an uphill slog, so I'd like to avoid hitting the "main" planet of this act too early.

there was a question about changes in the story depending which order you visit the planets, i wonder if it really matters in act 2
