Roguelikes

Anyone here like roguelikes? I'm currently playing through Moria having just lost an Angband game at level 50 something of the dungeon.

Moria feels a lot harder than Band which throes money and treasure at you by mid-game. Still it's enjoyable in how slow and methodical you need to play to survive.

Is this on Android? It looks cool.

Im a big fan of Brogue, TOME, and Tangledeep, for different reasons. Waiting for a day dcss gets a fork by a better less miserable dev that doesnt cut content every patch and doesnt support online speedrunners.

Theres a new elona for mobile by a different dev team. Classic elona and its various forks are all pc.

I like DCSS and it has a good android port. Right now I don't have a PC so I can only play anything on android or dosbox. When I can get a new PC I want to check out Elona and TOME.

Elona has a pretty steep learning curve, but its a pretty open ended game, especially for a roguelike. Its very nice, but not everyone's cup of tea. TOME4 is pretty neat, I recommend getting one of the addons that unlocks all the unlockables, unless youre into unlocking classes, races, and skill trees.

              Thanks.

Not a roguelike but you weirdos might want to check out Demise. Extremely obscure and jank but worthwhile crawler.

Never heard of it but I will check it out.

ADOM was my first introduction and MAN do I love it. I've managed to beat it only once though, with a killer bug tamer bard.

I've heard good things about ADOM, when I get back on PC it's a game I'm going to try out.

don't really like the classic roguelikes but caves of qud and cdda are very good RPGs/sandboxes and I enjoy them a lot

Is the learning curve for CCDA really high?

not really, no. give it a try, it's free.

Awesome, thanks. When I get back on PC, TOME, Caves, CDDA, ADOM and Elona I'm going to try out. So far I'm only used to Band style roguelikes and a little nethack from what I've tried. Sandbox rls sounds daunting compared to the simpler dungeon crawls.

bros, how do we stop devs from fricking up their own games...

I think the problem is that devs endlessly update their games. Very few games seem to just say "Well now the game is complete, thanks everyone please enjoy". So when you are looking for things to update, you start to listen to the loudest members of your community who will almost always be some raging homosexuals.

Well what else is there to do? A new project? Frick that people don't change and they stick to what's familiar

          >linley's dungeon crawl started in 1995, now DCSS is 27 years in development
          >ADOM started in 1994 and last updated in 2020, 26 years in development
          >nethack first release in 1996, last update in 2022, 26 years in development
Yes, a new project seems reasonable.

yeah that's called sunk cost nothing wrong about it in this case
I hate people that make new babies after the old one goes to college, they are always the worst, kid loses the novelty fast, gets neglected and they always go back to the old one

Thanks for this, I've been meaning to do a roguelike thread for a while. I'm ancient - started with Rogue when I was a kid, moved on to Moria, and spent 90s fricking around with Angband. Working on tweaking MAngband got me my first job and saved me from a really shitty life. If I die rich (unlikely as it is) I'll leave a foundation giving scholarships for students working on roguelikes and retro games.
