Exactly. Genders weren't in the game, yet infatuation was, so the compromise was to make the status work on everyone rather than remove Attract and Cute Charm.
I hope that these creators understand that Attract is restricted to opposite gender, not because of "going more liberal would alienate some of the fanbase", but because it would be fricking unbearably broken if it worked in the real games if it worked the way they want it to.
