Pathfinder Kingmaker did the same thing. "Here pick your race, class and appearence", meanwhile in the story you're shown in every book piece that Hedwirg, a cute gay white human male mercenary is the canon protagonist.

Games present their story through endless cutscenes that removes the player from the game but it's also probably one of those morons that will also say "whats teh point and my goal here if teheres no story". if u want a story, read a book, they have significantly better stories than any game I have played, even pretty mediocre books outstrip the "best" stories in games

You're also shown with merc companions in the book pieces, so I'd take them with a grain of salt and just assume the artist Linzi got for her book was taking some liberties. Linzi says she can't draw for shit so all the art had to be added later by some rando that wasn't there unless Octavia did it all.
