Been working on a game with a friend. I was doing the plot, gameplay, map design and music while they did art and tilesets; was going great until they started doing less and less. Now I'm working on everything, and I suck at drawing.
They're not obligated to work on the game, let alone put in the same amount of time as me. It's just a passion project, after all. But how do I tell them I'm hiring commissioners without hurting their feelings? I just want to finish this game and have it out.
>without hurting their feelings
if they're already not contributing why bother sparing them?
Because I get that he's just lazy. He relies on inspiration fumes to get anything done, which happens maybe like once every five months. Pretty damn good drawer too, which is a shame. You're right, though. If he is that butthurt about it, I guess I can work on something more casual with him in the future.
Sorry for derailing your thread. It's a he lmfao
maybe just bringing up the idea of you considering looking elsewhere will light a fire under his ass
and if it doesn't, then you've at least told him where things stand
or suggest splitting up the work in some way if he still wants to work on things so you aren't bottlenecked too hard if he's slow
>But how do I tell them I'm hiring commissioners without hurting their feelings?
Just say this " Look I know your not obligated to work on this and it's just a passion project but I really want to see this game get done and because your taking so long on your end I'm hiring commissioners if you can't fill your end if you still want to be a part of this'' hope your game goes well anon.
Ay bro, I'll help you with it.
How do you know they didn't already finish it without you? Maybe they were sparing your feelings by not telling you that you're the dead weight that was holding them back.
I mean, here you are. Saying they're not obligated to work in their project. My geiger counter is detecting dangerous levels of copium.
By 'they', you're just referring to him in 3rd person, right?
He's not a troony or anything? That would be silly. I think the people replying just got the wrong idea.
tell him he still gets a cut of the profits
>what the frick kind of schizophrenia is this
summer vacation
what kinda rpg is it? im pretty good with music and could help contribute there if it helps at all bro
Didn't answer your second question, whoops. I'm actually pretty decent with music. Have a knack for mood. I just need to refresh on some music theory notes
>ut how do I tell them I'm hiring commissioners without hurting their feelings?
Not to worry, they will probably feel relieve.
Say 'hey, I know you're busy and this game can't be your main priority right now, so I was wondering if you'd mind me paying for some art to speed things along a little?'
Other things you can do -
Say you'll pay for it.
Say you'll be commissioning background art/tilesets/other relatively 'generic' things and that you still want your friends stuff front and center (assuming they're mostly done with the key stuff).
Talk about how you feel like having to do the art is sapping your enthusiasm or say you want to maintain your momentum so you can finish it (i.e. make it a 'you' problem).
Or you could just get some free assets from itchio and use them as placeholders instead of investing your own time in doing something you're bad at.
Tell him that you'll be paying for third party commissions as a favor to him because, while you're passionate about this project, you understand that he hasn't been able to find the time recently and don't want him to feel rushed for the sake of your passion project.
I was surprised to find out charas-project was still around, too bad the vast majority of the stuff on there is still just video game asset rips
Jesus fricking christ how obsessed are you?
You're wacking it to trannie porn right now aren't you?

Have fun monitoring this thread for the next few days.
Lol.
Yeah that was me, just lurking the thread because I wanna see RPGM stuff and I decided to respond for the heck of it. Genuinely got caught off-guard, like, what the frick kind of schizophrenia is this?
>people having actual full-blown meltdowns because anon used "they" in their post
So much for the left being snowflakes. What the frick is wrong with you people lmao
My development in my game is going good my artist got done with all the girls now I just need to finish the rooms in the house.
I've been trying to buy the MV bundle on HB and my fricking card keeps getting declined. Tried paypal, direct payment etc. What the frick is wrong with humble now? They're asking for a phone number too. That website's gone to shit. Can't buy MV+DLC for that price anywhere else though ffs.

hey man you mind if i play atom? i dont wanna mess up your progress on your character
actually if you load this file, it will just bring you to the title screen, because the game is over at that point.
Is there any point to buy rpg maker when rpg developer https://youtu.be/cLQP9LvKYUA is coming out in early access this year?
No, but because Unite is coming soon:tm:
>Unite
After unity going full israelite, it's dead on arrival
Haven't heard of any game actually switching engines, so it was a nothingburger as usual.
>literal who dev tool
here is your reason, RPGM already has a long history and reputation among these "no coding needed!" engines. More users = more community-based support content.
This will need to dethrone Maker's popularity if you want it to be worthy it
Today I added footstep sounds for different areas like swamp, grass, concrete floors etc. I also learned how to make event so that its SE will get louder or weaker depending how close you are to it. Sounds really add to ambience.
What are the differences between the rpg maker versions?
Which one should I start with? QRD?
Just saw a thread in rpgm forum about Omori getting a Switch version. How? Isn't Switch not support for rpgm games or they port the whole game into another engine?
One selling point of MV (which Omori was made in) was compatibility with more systems.
What about MZ?
Anymore mv games that ported to switch?
rpg maker MV is essentially javascript, which is cross-compatible with many devices and easy to make a port/wrapper/launcher for it
wtf is wrong with you? you're triggered over the word 'they'????
Are you moronic? Do you actually think people say 'they' because of some tran stuff? That's how English works. You're a schizo. Who is this obsessed with anti-trans shit that you get butt hurt over someone speaking English normally???
Should I buy the RPG Maker Resurgence Bundle on Humble if I want to get started making a simple RPG?
Grinding more real word corruption scenes.

I wanna start making my own rpg game. I got the concept and the characters and some idea of mechanics but i dont know where to start
any advice or a good guide?
a little over halfway done with chapter two
chapters? how big are they
try making a single level first, like a puzzle or a dungeon for your game. keep making these until you understand how to start.
my game isn't actually officially divided into "chapters", but I refer to each big stretch of the game before a main boss fight as a chapter for the sake of setting realistic development goals. most people cleared the demo in around an hour or two, and the demo's content was more or less the entire first chapter. given that my plan is for it to be the shortest one, I'd say each chapter should take players around 3 hours give or take

moron-o and newbie here. Is there any plugins with a skill system similar to Deus Ex for MV/MZ?
How do I make myself do more mapping, eventing, game balancing, etc? The graphic and story-writing side of things is easy enough, even though my story is basic and the graphics are hit-or-miss, but the game world I've made is like two and a half maps at the moment, none of them fully finished, and populated with enemies whose stats are marginally altered and only have basic attacks. Should I stop worrying and just let it happen naturally?
Where does /vrpg/ post their games?
Theres the jams
Some of them arent even rpgs though, just made with rpgm
I've been meaning to start working on a game but I'm hung up on wanting to make combat feel fun and engaging so I haven't started...not sure what do.
>wanting to make combat feel fun and engaging
Do that at the end, worst comes to worst, you release a mediocre game
Nah shit combat is the thing that turns me off most RPGs so it's important to me personally that it feels like a meaningful aspect of the game.
Don't worry brother, I will make more than enough shit combat to make up for your efforts to achieve the opposite
I really hate trawling through nip websites and reading their permissions, even if you go via the megathread on the RM site you still have to navigate moonrunes and whack layouts to find things. Any easier methods? I want to make a murder mystery set in a school.

I'd help you if you posted a link to the script and didn't just delete your posts for no reason.

Is there one good reason to not use AI generated portraits?
Absolutely none. I'd recommend Midjourney since they make the highest quality AI stuff. I've gotten some beautiful landscape ideas from them. Just alter the image or redraw it so you don't get hit with any copyright issues. I think they still own the images.
This, AI is great for ideas and reference material, at least for parallax background art, but you shouldn't trace or straight up take what AI produces for you.
I'm tempted to try code a card game battle system someone stop me
>need variables for each card you own
>need variables for each card in your deck
>need variables for each card in your opponent's deck
>need variables for each card in your hand
>need variables for each card in your opponent's hand
>need variables for your monster cards' stats
>need variables for your opponent's monster cards' stats
>need to program the effects of each and every card in the game individually
if all of this isn't enough to stop you, consider that
>you need to program the fricking ai to play well enough that the player doesn't get bored of stomping an ai that barely fights back
None of this is as difficult as it sounds though.
>make a list of your cards and assign them arbitrary variables, obviously in some sort of order
= 01, Shield = 02, etc
>Any and all effects of these cards are checked against a lookup table in the form of a series of Conditional Branches, executed any time a card effect is invoked
>augmented by other conditions which check for modifiers, but this is easy
>Deck/hand/battle variables can be their own variable array which is only dealt with on a temporary basis, during battles
>this will depend on the size of your hands/fields/etc
>ex. V101~200=player/foe decks (assuming 50 cards each), V201~300 for field variables and hands which you point around/through for selection, targeting, damage/effect calc, etc.
>other more permanent stuff like player deck, inventory, etc, can be its own array
>example: V[1001~1050]=Current Deck (each variable=card ID)
>card inventory itself could literally just be the quantities of each card since you don't need to account for ID in a fixed-order library. Bonus points if you incorporate the have/don't have flag into the variable
>V[2001]=quantity of card ID 1. If 0, you just don't have it, if you have acquired it, 1000+quantity in inventory.
The most difficult part would be designing the AI since there are a large number of possibilities for what you might want/expect/etc the enemy to do, and programming them to put strategies to use will take you more time than any of the structural/design stuff by an incredible amount.
It's all a lot of work, but none of the logic for it is THAT hard.
Found this cool Blackjack mini-game script for VX Ace but I am trying to find a way to add items (Poker Chips) after you win.
The script and mini-game can track win/loss ratio so i'm wondering if there's a syntax or something that can add an item after it. Anyone got any ideas? Trying to look for RMVXA help online is like a needle in a haystack.
I literally evented my own blackjack minigame from scratch, might be able to help! What's the script
https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/late-rmw-2016-christmas-gift-blackjack-mini-game-rgss3.72719/
here thanks. from 2016 it is. you'll need 7-Zip to open the rar file to open it in vx ace. nice someone made this, as a gift!
fun on it's own but a syntax line to add an item or gold will make the win/loss stand out.
FIXED IT!
I just need to do this where the victory messages are in script:
$game_party.lose_gold(add how much gold you get)
$game_party.gain_gold(same but for removing)
I bet there's a big list of general script lines to add somewhere.
I've been toying around with Ao Oni style chases in VXA, so far I've figured out how to create the illusion of being chased room from room, and I've also managed to get a functioning "searching" that's kinda like Tyrant in REmake2 (in truth it's entirely abstracted), and random ambushes for when the killer gets tired of wandering.
Not touched RPG Maker in years. Biggest problem I run into is how I need to use a map template for chase maps otherwise numbered events go haywire.
>I've also managed to get a functioning "searching" that's kinda like Tyrant in REmake2 (in truth it's entirely abstracted), and random ambushes for when the killer gets tired of wandering.
Would you mind going into a bit more detail on these mechanics? That sounds interesting and potentially relevant to my project.
The searching is basically a mode where the creature is inactive, but it's X distance away from you. X shifts by a random value and plays a sound (The closer the louder), and when it hits a specific value it spawns it and gives chase. Like I said, completely abstracted.
As for the random ambush, it's a bit more complicated but still straightforward. under certain conditions the monster will go into "lurk mode" (in my toybox it's when its distance hits -2). Near every ambush point is an ambush trigger that is directly in front of it, and it takes three random steps and then teleports back to its initial location using scripts. If you touch the trigger, the monster spawns. This allows it to jump out of closets and etcetera. The random steps means that it's very possible to walk by the ambush spot, and when backtracking through the room you hit it for real.
I'd toss you what I have but I've broken a bunch of things as you do.
That's a really cool way to approach that, using sound to communicate it is also clever.
>FOSSIL isn't able to support some MV scripts
it's over...
But what if I don't want to use that dumpster fire of MZ?
Which rpg maker version do you guys currently use and why?
VX Ace because I am an unstable individual and my nostalgia and familiarity directly affects my opinion of it
Similarly, 2003 is utter complete fricking trash for me because, as a kid, I tried it as my first RPG Maker and I didn't know what to do, even though today I could use it just fine.
I use VX Ace because it's cheap and it's the one I've used the longest. It's probably less useful than MV but I just like it more.
this artstyle is so "in" right now but I never find it appealing
What do you think could be improved? I'm not much of an artist, more of a writer and music guy.
2k3 for quick testing of ideas and usual jerking around
VXA is the main choice because it has basic scripting but without totally ditching the event system, a few features that are missing in later versions (one of the picture effects) and also has better resolution options for both the art and the screen.
MZ
it's good
What do you guys think of my combat UI? (Background, HP and MP bars are all animated. Im purposley using an older screenshot with old art assets so i cant have my new shit stolen)
Text is too small, there's a ton of unused real estate, multiple fonts make it painful to look at and your battlers having different artstyles to your characters I think is a fundamental visual issue. The "ultra" bar also looks like it's positioned/indented weirdly. I see what you're going for but right now it just looks really messy.
This is true, thanks for the fresh set of eyes anon. I've already tackled the font size issue and I'm going to be redoing the party members as pixelart soon. The other UI elements are all pixelart now too. Not sure what to do with the empty space since it can be occupied by more enemies in fights involving them. It's certainly maturing
It's not even the font size that's most egregious, it's that you use multiple fonts apparently completely arbitrarily. It looks flat-out bad, man.
There's only 2 fonts in the image, and I've already replaced the non-pixelart font with a bold version of the small font. Posting an older image was a bad idea
Especially because you don't want people "stealing ur art". No offense, but that seems pretty egotistical to me.
Pretty bad idea yeah. "Hey can you give feedback on this image, btw the feedback you're liable to give I've already done" is kind of a weird move.
The issue with the font is that one is pixelated, and the other is not.
The photoshop brush used for the borders is too low res, the use of gradients look too cheap, all the character portraits should be from the same perspective, and the lack of a cohesive color scheme is distracting (one too many colors).
lol, imagine fearing your tumblr tier art shit getting stolen
Art status: Stolen
OH NO NO NO IT'S OVER TUMBLRSISTERS
Now I'm going to take the art and make a quirky self-aware earthbound-like RPG!!!
Don't forget to make it actually about depression!!
Umm sweaty it's actually about my nb life, mental health is VERY important but not all mental health issues come under the depression umbrella. Check your privilege.
>Im purposley using an older screenshot with old art assets so i cant have my new shit stolen
Who the frick asked
So, I am working on my game and I noticed I put way too much thought into the system. Problem: the game still does not look very good. I am using assets I am finding online, but the characters are a bit cookie cutter. Is there any reasonable course of action I can take not to make the game look generic while at the same time not commissioning an artist? I can't do art either so that's not an option.
Learn to do art.
Does anyone have experience porting a project from an older version of MV (1.5) to a newer one (1.6)
Is it just brainless or do I need to watch out for something
Thanks for the tank, SUCKA!!!!
Mind to hear my elevator pitch for a project I am working on.
voidpunk style game set in far future of our universe (in the middle of heat death) following the lonely journey of a single passenger of rusty ship that time forgot, probably the last living being in corpse that became of the universe, leaving our protagonist with time to ponder and get into ''cryogenic'' deep sleep where he will explore the absurd world of his own mind.
this is like my 4nd take, the internet connection is fricking me over I hope this works out
>4nd
oh God I am moronic
Too vague to actually give an opinion. There's no impression of what the gameplay would be like, and making the premise interesting would depend on your writing skills.
Pick something you like, change all the names and start converting it into an RPG maker game.
>of his own mind.
Wow, you really had to ruin the whole premisse right at the end didn't you?
Woah is it secretly about depression????? So quirky!!!!
OK Omori 2
Go ahead, make it, it's going to be worthless shit no matter how many balding semi-female creatures flock to it and swear by it as if it were the Bible
could be neat. don't let the gays on here discourage you. even if it is some rote plot about depression, the narrative motifs you utilize are enough to make it stand out as something interesting -- assuming that you're an artist that can realize your own vision
Are there any plugins or mods for VXA that expand functionality of the program itself?
in all my travels i've only come across that once, its something very rare. what would you want from it?
>talking like you're at the bazaar
The frick
Cutting and pasting multiple events for starters, I'm the guy working on the stalker system up the thread.
you could copy-paste the entire map would that work?
If you know how to code you can actually use scripts to programmatically edit your game
If I knew how to code I wouldn't use RPG Maker.
Dear newbies to RPGM:
Don't ever fricking think about making your first project original, no custom graphics, no custom nothing
Make some 15 minute diarrhea about poopfarting or whatever and just tell everyone who says it's bad that you'll take their eye nerves out with tweezers
Then make a 30 minute poopshit about the importance of beating your wife or something, whatever works really
Just start small and slowly ramp it up, don't torture yourself like morons (me) did
That is the plan.
I need to learn how to make a fricking chest with loot right and transforming boss before I could start vomiting my creativity.
Hey, is this bundle worth buying?
I am completly new to idea of making games in RPG Maker.

Genuinely thanks for sharing that mate, I was using VXAce illegally up until now and I just snagged it for 1EUR
That being said, yeah, this is definitely a worth investment because most of these frickers cost a lot separately

The backrooms is a cancerous internet meme that inspires mediocrity.
I thought it was alright at first. It took liminal spaces + dream analysis + whatever else headcanon physics-clipping and made a fun story out of it, but it became stupid when they started adding floors.
I happen to enjoy browsing /x/ threads for ideas.
There's a bunch of survival horror games inspired by it. Someone needs to make an RPG.
Footage found.
I don't think you can noclip in a 2D game...
Are you kidding? I swear every other rpg maker game has some tile somewhere, that lets you walk up and on to walls.
How do you write a story for the backrooms?
In theory "The Backrooms" is just like any other dungeon.
The burning question in most dungeon crawlers, that I've played, is the backstory of how this place came to be.
So for the backrooms, Kane Pixels' videos puts forward the idea that is was created as a storage solution. But then something went wrong.
Other takes on it are that reality is a virtual simulation and the backrooms are out-of-bound zones generated from garbage data. Or something.
The problem with the later one is how to inform the player, or even the player characters, of that reality. The creepypasta just tells you that in prose. But that's not really the style in for visual media. We'd prefer exposition from an informed character - but why would a character know? how would they know?
Another structure issue is that most backroom videos are made in the "found footage" format, following a lost character. They find something interesting or terrifying. And then their fate is unknown unless/until it gets a callback in another video. Creating an anthology.
That's not typical for Rpgs. Although I have seen games change the point-of-view regularly. But eventually their storylines would have to converge.
On second thought. Dungeons are usually a seat of power. They contain something to rewrite the world. Or they're connected to some nexus or source.
I feel that's not in the spirit of the backrooms. They're a "liminal space" horror. Like, you'd find the opposite of power inside. Just wasted space. Rot. Missing socks.
There's a lot that can be said about liminal spaces. And what affects people's nerves. Veils of deception and such.
I think creating a "Backrooms" RPG would be challenging because IRL players are conditioned to suspend a certain level of disbelief. We are use to fractal Penrose labyrinths and lifeless NPCs. On top of satirical rpg that break the 4th wall entirely or just poorly playtested projects.
Backrooms are just a horror version of Rogue.
Rogue doesn't have a story either.
Maybe it does and maybe it doesn't. You know those old school publishers would just slap on box art and some text in the manual that might not actually reflect what's in the game.
According to the manual, you play as a rouge who has long forgotten their own name in their quest for the Amulet of Yendor. Of course this is contradicted as soon as you start the game and name your character.
The amulet was created by magicians to remind mankind of "their origins". So there's different ways you can interpret that. Like, it's going to help the Rouge remember it's name? maybe verify a bloodline, maybe evidence that women truly are from Venus? Or by "their origins" it meant the Magicians' origins, who knows?
The amulet was stolen by the Dungeon Lord (No reason given) - from the Magicians who created it, presumable. Because the Magicians' magic will revive "true seekers of the amulet" from death. But the Dungeon Lord rearranges the dungeon and sends them back to the beginning.
This is B.S. because the "Dungeon Lord" doesn't actually appear in the game. Also the manual text says the rouge entered a cave, by rolling away a moss covered rock. And only use "dungeon of doom" metaphorically.
The rouge passes the remains of others that died, but apparently they weren't "true seekers" because they didn't revive?
If you actually find the amulet and get out, the game says the rouge just sold it for money...
I think the original idea was that, once you step into the dungeon, the entrance would be hidden or forgotten, so finding the amulet is the only way out.
Yes but, like the Backrooms, Rouge had a bunch of clones. The goal was still "The Amulet of Yendor", but they had their own explanation for the dungeon and what the amulet was used for.
>I think the original idea was that, once you step into the dungeon, the entrance would be hidden or forgotten, so finding the amulet is the only way out.
Then nobody would go in the first place. Unless they fell in by accident, like the backrooms. But that leaves the same narrative conundrum. If there was something in the backrooms that let you out, how would people know about it.
Can't use "A wizard did it" as an excuse.
I've never been able to solve this problem.
(continued)
Only in my case, it's just giving the player character a goal.
I've brought it up on some other forums. But they all operate by adventure game logic. The player will move the character where ever they're allowed. They make not attempt to justify the characters actions.
That works for side quests. The world is ending - play slots at the casino.
But when it's a main quest, you can't just accidently trip over a god relic in a room the character had no business being in.
The RTP we want
>We added a time-progress battle system
>Battle events are completely useless because we didn't add an action trigger.
>We also didn't document was a "turn" is.
>We switched from Ruby to Javascript
>No the event page only lets you check if VARs are >=
Don't remind me.

VXA if you're based, MV if you're based and moronic
How to i increase the resolution of my game to fit most monitors on fullscreen?
Im on vx ace and i dont want my game to look amateur as frick
Fullscreen++ by Zeus81. It will look blurry on some GPUs tho.
Lads how do I get animations to work right after scaling my map up due to resolution changes.
I've tried setting it to both an event and a player and the animation still plays in the bottom right of the screen.
Show us the animation's details and the event code.
I just bough 2k even tho I already had VXAce and know how to code. Hopefully this was a good investment.
Hope you bought it via the humble bundle further up the page.
2k isn't even in that bundle, anon
I'm an idiot, I read it as 2k3.
What's the best way to have conditional choices in MZ? For example, in an investigation game where new dialogue options would be unlocking constantly as information is provided.
switches/conditional branch would be the easiest. this is ace but its basically the same
Thanks, bro.
odds: VX Ace

Good choice
I have a question about something minor. Is it possible to make the player character jump in an event without having player followers also jump into the same position as the party leader? I'm trying to do an event where your player can destroy roadblocks and I want the player character to jump to give a bit of visual feedback but it looks weird as shit with the problem I mentioned. Otherwise it looks like I'll have to either have to disable player followers or get rid of the jumping action. Pic related is the event logic.
meme way: gather rollowers, disable, do your action, enable
non meme way: just call the jump action via script bro
How should I make an area with poison gas and where you take X damage for each step (like poison swamp) but which you can negate by equipping a gas mask?
I can think of ways but I feel like I'm missing some easier and simpler way to implement this.
Equipment should have an SP-Paramenter for Floor Damage you can set to 0%.
But the catch here is that "Floor Damage" is indiscriminate.
So you make a Gas Mask to prevent swamp damage. But it'll also prevent lava damage, spike damage, ect...
Also Floor Damage is hilariously hard coded as something -10hp
Which makes the SP-Paramenter % absolutely R E T A R D E D
Best way without the drawbacks
mentioned is probably to have a common event run as a parallel process that gives you an invisible state with the floor damage parameter only in the rooms with gas in it and only if you wear the gas mask.
And about the hardcoded floor damage, that's an easy to solve problem by simply going into the script editor and changing a number.
Yeah it was a problem back in VX Ace. But back then it was standard procedure to just edit the core scripts in the database. You didn't have to worry about an """"update"""" every 4 months that'll overwrite your changes.
If it's toxic gas wouldn't standing in it be sufficient to damage you?
You are going into real-time puzzles territory.
Frick real-time puzzles territory.
reminder that if you use plugins, you haven't used the engine itself to its fullest potentials
just like you didn't beat a game if you use rewind, cheat, etc
>you haven't used the engine itself to its fullest potentials
I unironically just want to make generic RPGs to spite people that keep telling me to make shit that's unique, quirky, and original. Plugins or not, I will never need to push the engine to its full potential.
I do make generic RPGs and people pretend I don't exist.
Maybe it's you and not the games you make
What do you mean maybe I'm me?
Who else would I be?
Anyone here has worked with Live2D stuff before?
The only Live2D plugin I can find seems to be in japanese.

How the frick do I stop myself from comparing my game with other, better RPGM games?
Aversion therapy techniques such as sniffing ammonia is used for sex offenders.
Don't.
Accept you're bad and improve instead!
Name one better RM game than the one you're making
All iowacorn games.
iowacorn doesn't count because he's not a human, he's a divine being that crossed into our dimension on accident
Black Souls series
Cheers
Genuinely curious, what percentage of devs here picked up RPGM to make porn?
Not me, though the final thing that pushed me to create was in fact a porn game.
Wanted to take up drawing to make porn, but I'm going to make my first RPG to motivate myself learn art in the first place.
Haven't thought about making an H-game since I never understood the appeal
which h-games have you played. I've played a few good ones at this point, some of which have given me ideas for my own.
Played none, only heard about Rance and Black Souls.

kinda always wanted to give RPG Maker a go but lack creativity so don't have any good story ideas
Just make an open world game with no story then
Just rip-off stories/games you like, then tweak/combine them until players can't tell that it's a rip-off.
Didn't work for Legion Saga.
>my project gets less and less downloads every day, it got the most download the first night I put it on itch
frick, it's over....
Post your game
I already did in this thread.
Which one, then?
Does VX Ace or MV have any editor mods like the Maniacs patch?
No
Gahhhhh even something as simple as "Convert this line to script" would be a fricking godsend! Guess I just have to learn Javascript.
why isn't anyone making an honest, sincere rpg instead of subversive, quirky, post-modern anymore?
I would argue that Knight Shift is an honest, sincere RPG. It just has enemies with puns for names.
I'm trying.
people make them, they just dont get attention
i am making a very quirky-looking rpg that is visually a love letter to all mother-inspired indie games (frick you, scribbling in ms paint is my passion), but instead of mental illness and/or hurting people bad, the plot is closer to classic fantasy rpgs, complete with a prophecy and gods and shit, with bits of lore strewn about like dark souls, but without sacrificing a whole narrative
not sure where i stand on your spectrum based on that info, but there you go
https://rpgmaker.net/
There is a plenty there, just check the games that no one gives a shit and that is the reason people stopped making those games.
Now, take a look at itch.io popular RPG maker games page. 99% moronic edgy shit.

I've played plenty of honest RPGs that are also porn, I don't get your point
I originally started making RPG Maker games for practical purposes but ended up liking making stuff, though lately I haven't really felt like making anything, but rather tinkering with it and trying to design complex-ass shit I'll never actually use.
I think you should share it with people that might find it useful, no matter how unwieldy it might be.
I have retroactively given Poisson lower lashes and instantly their design is 100% more appealing
Cute!
What's you guys' thoughts on "Metal Slime" like enemies which flee unless you pass a dps check
I love those. Wouldn't Piggy Banker be more of a Gold Golem, though? Maybe have one for experience points and another for gold.
I think I have an unused VX Ace key
Go nuts whoever's the lucky bastard

Heeey, thanks!
I still don't know which rpgm version to use aaaaa!!!
Then use MV for all the community support.
2003 with Maniac or VX Ace for community support, MV if you really need mouse compatibility.
Normalize posting this picture if someone asks you "Why do you want to do that" when you ask for an oddly-specific thing.
If anyone is interested in MZ for just the assets. Buy the MV trinity DLC instead.
Whoever manages the store is an idiot.
What price will you charge for you game?
$0 USD
nothing, I got my copy of vxace for an euro, that's basically free.
free, hoping to get enough experience to be able to eventually make money off of it though
It is from player for players so 0.00
60$ just as much as any other game released nowadays.
What about premium preorder bonus and DLCs?
I will have a preorder bonus but i wont have DLCs i will just make any DLC into its own separate 60$ game.
how long is it. if its proper length go for 10$ any more or less and it will look overpriced.
5-8 hours?
thats enough to charge 10 then
free
It's my legacy to the world. I will die and my shitty RPG Maker game will remain. I will never be forgotten.
Most filesharing platforms don't live very long.
I remember back in the RMXP days. Everyone uploaded their project to megaupload and then...the fire nation attacked.
5 million bucks
Sure it'll sell awfully, but as long as I get 1 sale I'll be rich.
rpg maker isnt real.
what's he thinking about rpgmsisters?
beside omori, are there any other popular games made in MV or later?
somehow rpg maker games that are well known and/or have cultural impact are only made in vx ace or earlier
It's about soul.
Witch's House MV is pretty fricking excellent
I think you're delusional or biased
>everything from when I was 12 was the best
>my brain was undeveloped
>my body was pumping hormones.
Simply put I think the issue is that the "landmark" titles (if you can call obscure freeware games "landmark") were made in a much simpler time when the internet wasn't so rampantly commercialized and easy to use tools for making games and sharing them with people was a complete novelty. That's not really the case anymore; most people making games now are doing so to make money and that's changed the scene quite a bit. It's not all for the worse, LISA was probably the big showcase that you can make money off of an RPG Maker game and it's one of the best games made with the engine, as far as games made with MV go Fear & Hunger is fantastic and I expect its sequel, Termina, will be even better. It's undeniable that the scene has changed with the times though. This doesn't even just go for the RPG Maker either, I want you to try to imagine something like Higurashi or the early Windows Touhou games coming out today looking and being as rough around the edges as they were when they first released and becoming extremely popular.
Demons Roots was fantastic, but I guess popularity is restricted to Japanese audience for now.
HEARTBEAT was made in MV, but I'm not sure if it counts as popular. It is well-fricking-done though in my opinion.
It's trash with highly defined pixel art, and that kind of pixel art is soulless. Shill games made by humans.
>It's trash with highly defined pixel art,
Have you even played it? I find the battles are shockingly well balanced, even in hard mode.
>and that kind of pixel art is soulless
What about it is soulless? The fact that it looks consistent? Even a blind man can tell you its better than the dogshit OMORI or undertale brought to the table.
>Shill games made by humans
Okay, now I get it. You're just a buzzword spewing shitposter.
>Have you even played it?
No and never will.
>What about it is soulless? The fact that it looks consistent?
Unironically yes, it feels like corposhit.
>You're just a buzzword spewing shitposter
YES
>Unironically yes, it feels like corposhit.
So things not looking butt ugly or just completely disharmonic with itself is corporate now? Frick. What a world we live in.
I mean, I figure it's got to be calculated, right? It's pixel art, yo. If you want it to be consistent you're going to be counting pixels up down and center, I'm not sure that can really be helped. Unless you mean the non-pixel art, in which case that's very subjective.
>Unless you mean the non-pixel art
I think you're right, you understand it better than I did.
I think the conversion from art to pixel art is perfect, but the art itself is not that appealing to me.
That's pretty fair. It feels like, if you're not into CAPCOM type art or look-alike art, you're not really going to like this either. I think it's pretty good, as it gives a solid idea of personalities without telling you everything right away, but again. Subjective.
Not that anon, I did play the game but there is something about the art the makes it a bit unappealing to me, I can't put it into words but it's like it's too calculated?
Like it's following the rules of character design too strictly and lacks some personality.
What do you think is important in a main character story arc?
It seems to me, when they're not lacking a voice (as a silent protag would) they'll still be lacking a social life. I mean, they're still social but they're nobody and meeting everyone for the first time or something.
Personally, I find the majority of JRPG protags to be unsatisfying.
There are volumes written on how to give a main character a satisfying arc. Please play better games, also.
>volumes written on how to give a main character a satisfying arc

Is this a cry for help?
More like a cry for people to help themselves.
So you're schizophrenic and interpreted "What do you think" as "How do I do something"?
And you thought you were helping by telling everyone they're stupid. Which IS an opinion. Just not the one people were interested in.
I specifically answered "where can I find books on this subject" with a google search. If people can't be bothered to look things up themselves that's not my problem. You've also mischaracterised the situation, the google search and subsequent chiding was a response to "where?" not to the original post.
Sorry, I thought you would recommend me some books.
I wouldn't know. All my protagonists are unapologetic buttholes that everybody hates and they never change out of that.
A personal goal. Personal steaks.
But that can be hard to work into a globe trotting JRPG campaign. When a Dark Lord casts a shadow on the land it will most directly affect the King or some Royal Family. Because it's their domain he's messing with.
Moving away from that, there's more and more degrees of separation.
How does a peasant get involved? Maybe the Dark Lord commands undead, or goblins. The goblins raid and rape a village. Kidnapping the peasant's sister, cousin, wife what have you.
Maybe the peasant's father is among the ranks of the undead. His reanimated corpse holds the answer to a burning question.
That's something to go after.
The furthest degree of separation might involve a foreigner from a distant land, or other world. Maybe a time traveler. All they want is to avoid attention - but for the sake of the story you know that's not going happen. They'll be seen as a threat, or the next target. A catalyst for change. Some savior mentioned in a prophesy, legend, scripture.
They could be exiled from their old home, hopeful this could be their new one. They could have a chip on their shoulder about people rejecting or accepting him.
In their darkest hour, maybe they learn they aren't "the chosen one" after all. They get what they wanted from the start - be be ignored and dismissed. But now too much has happened, they can't just walk away. Now they're going to do something they shouldn't. Build a nuke, frick the timeline, frick the "order of the universe" because it fricked with them.
I think that's a difference between western and eastern philosophies.
I say "western" I should say "English".
I think English people put a lot of focus on knowing a character.
I see Japanese and French people put more focus on emotions and relationship dynamics. Japan has these archetypes like "Tsundere" which isn't really a character, but an attitude a character has towards another character.
Say, a character really likes another character but they try really hard to hide it, to the point they're the opposite of affectionate around them.
You can see this in old medieval "Chivalry" tales written by the French. A knight fights off some ruffians. The damsel refuses to acknowledge the knights deeds. "That wasn't you. They tripped into water. I was saved by the river; not you. Where did you learn to swing a sword anyways? A kitchen?"
I think an English reader/writer would beg the question "Why are you like this?" "Who are you when you're alone?"
I am an English writer and I am begging the question: Why are you like this?
The (YOU) jam is the other topic.
That's just the local schizo who dispenses bad advice, anon
You're just autistic and think everyone is here for the same reason you are.
>JRPGs don't have the capacity for that depth
I think they do. But maybe it's just in bad taste for a character to explain themselves.
What do you mean? Like "I'm sorry I was an butthole. I never knew my father."
I was thinking how the sense of self is different in other cultures.
I guess when your language has a bunch of pronouns it creates doubts.
Rene Descartes is like "I think, therefor I am".
And everyone is like...
He didn't say that. He said Cogito Ergo Sum. It removes all confusion and pronoun confusion. If you're going to be pretentious at least get it right.
and why was there confusion in the first place?
Because of the piss poor translation from Latin to French. Literally worse than Treehouse translation.
No idiot. What cause him to say something that is so obvious and doesn't need saying.
>Why did an existentialist philosopher make a statement about understanding his existence which only seems obvious because he was the first person to say it
Christ, stick to anime maybe.
This might seem mean to say, but this might be the most idiotic, least self-aware post I've ever seen.

lol I'm literally the person who posted the google link that got everyone so het up in the first place
What do you think gave it away?
I think that you can find examples of any writing style and philosophy in any language/culture.
To suggest that one is exclusive to a particular location/language is ignorant and suggests that you don't read.
Hello fellow de/v/s,
here’s a screen from the game I’ve been working on with MissingSeven, the dude who brought you Theia: the Crimson Eclipse, Nec[H]roma, 5th Era, Tales of Banalia and stuff like that. But this one’s just a short dungeon crawler thing, we whipped it up for the IGMC 2022
Link for those who want to try it out: https://missingseven.itch.io/ouroboros
Gameplay-wise: it’s a dungeon crawler with a twist, characters age or get older every six turns, so the combat is a chaotic mess and I love it. Plus there’s like two bosses with unique mechanics, equipment-based skills, and some movement-pattern minigames
Battle screen looks great, overworld looks like shit, but I will give it a fair shot as soon as I can.
It’s supposed to look like a tabletop game, but I get what you mean. Battle gameplay and cutscenes are a bit more classic, tho. Hope you’ll enjoy it, broseph
>default 17x13 tiles, 4:3 (20x15 tiles), 16:9, custom
which one do you guys like?
I like to watch the way you walk
I live to hear the words you talk
I'd love to know the things you do
(when no one's there to spy on you)
I want to crawl inside your head
To kiss your mind and lips of red
I dig the things you do to me
You've lit the fire to set me free
Does your game have meaningful dialogue choices, anons?
I'm thinking about getting into RPG Maker just so I can make some simple games for myself and maybe some friends of mine to enjoy.
https://www.humblebundle.com/software/rpg-maker-resurgence-software
Is this a good deal or a scam? Should I just pirate something instead? If down the line at some point years from now I decide to make some coomer fetish RPG Maker game and use pirated software and start a patreon, will I get fricked for it if I pirate?
What do you have against charity?
theyre all a scam except for the 5 item bundle. 1$ for vx ace is great.
what the frick is wrong with you?
you dont like ace?
You're calling a charity a scam. Focusing on what you get rather than give.
He's not being literal anon, he's saying the full price bundle isn't worth the money.
it's a donation; not a price.
Charities are scams meant to trick idiots into sending money to a third party who may or may not follow through with their promise of donations when they could just send any amount of money to the cause directly.
>b-but what about the people who can't send thousands of dollars to their favorite cause
Sending 1 dollar through charities is gonna do jack shit for the cause except for inflating your ego.
I'd like to see you try debate me!
Obviously don't throw your money at random internet charities? I am involved directly with the local charity I support. If you genuinely wish to help you need to meet the people, see their work and get personally involved. Anything else and there's obvious chances of it being a scam, I always thought this is common sense.
Congratulation, you're the unpaid wagee putting extra cash in pockets of lazy morons who'd rather employ voluntary work and get all the glory + some cash.
Souless maggot. I help out people in need because they've got none else. Because souless parasites like you sit on welfare and never lift a finger. What do you do, help yourself to shitposting? And then you wonder and blame why is society going down the shitter as you contribute absolutely nothing. Go do something good, fool.
> I help out people in need because they've got none else.
What a good messiah you are. Sure, more people need to hear this in a RPGMaker thread.
>Because souless parasites like you sit on welfare and never lift a finger.
My country has no welfare, even though it says otherwise. As for the soulless parasite thing, sure - never been a fan of blind altruism anyway.
>And then you wonder and blame why society is going down the shitter as you contribute absolutely nothing.
Imagine contributing to relatively legal pyramid schemes and genuenly thinking that your unpaid labor helps those that are perpetually kept in misery by your "employer" to facilitate further money laundering and corruption. Society "goes to shit" all the time and always will thanks to constant shift of goalposts perpetuated by structures designed to combat these going-to-shits, all the while the general level of life improves thanks not to said structires but to the technological and medical advancements.
>Go do something good, fool.
Pay me, b***h. You're not a family or a close friend so I owe you jack and shit. I hope you rot and die so those who I care about could have billionth of a percent better time on this planet.
Christ. Get help worthless parasite.
Man, Bulgarians are worse than roaches.
Treat your illness, noose, pills, gun, doesn't matter, it'll be better than the way you are right now.
Just stop and think about what you've just written bro. You've literally never met these people, never had a single interaction, discussion or even a genuine connection probably in years at this point and you call them lazy morons. People you don't even knwo or even met. You don't know anything about other people at all, what they've been through or the difficulty they're in. That speaks a lot about the type of person you are. Probably because you're embittered that noone really gave a shit about you. You're the lazy moron here, I didn't come here to flex on you but you're a complete dumbass that doesn't know what he's talking about at all and you need to shut the frick up. I would help you out but you're too proud and stupid to even admit that this is fricked in the head and you need mental help immediately. The entire reason why you even have a computer and internet connection right now is because somebody else contributed to it, what do you contribute to society? Get some help and give something back.
You are the charity.
I don't get it, what is MZ coupon?
i dont know, i wouldn't use it anyway.
The problem with Shinji is that he had a verbal tick, a way of thinking that doesn't get translated consistantly.
In English he says "I'm so fricked up"
But in Japanese it more like "I'm the lowest", it's a comparative statement. He doesn't see himself outside of a collective. He's always part of a set of something...of humans, of men, of pilots.
So the mental gymnastics he goes through just to grasp the concept of "I" is rather absurd.
The issue with eva and shinji(posters) is the lack of any productive alternatives to both the lifestyle or philosophy they have chosen seen or explained in the show. It's mistakenly taken as a celebration of the loser archetype even though Hideaki has went on multiple statements that claim the opposite. That your life is filled with choices. That is crucial to understand, that it is a choice that he and you make by continuing to wallow in self-pity, negative and backwards introspection that labors on the musings of identity and self-actualization when you barely have any willpower or courage to do anything at all. You choose to blame society, circumstances, others, anything and anyone but yourself for the choices that you make, daily. It's a vicious cycle of self-doubt, inadequacy and personal subjugation of guilt and shame that most young impressionable boys never escape.
That should be the moral and essence of the character, with the solution being simply put-
stop being a little b***h. Get your life together, be accountable and responsible towards yourself and grow to experience the fruits of this experience that is called life. Until you do, you will always be numb to it.
And for those that blame society for example. Society is a reflection of your negligence, ignorance and lack of any meaningful contribution to your fellow man or local community. You deserve the hell you've chosen for yourselves through inaction, hopelessness and a faux sense of intellectualism bordering on cowardice. Don't hide behind a veil of superiority, irrational fear is more damaging and sick than anything any society has done to you, or rather hasn't(in your case because you are a coward that lives through proxy). You are a coward. You hide from life and God(not in the biblical sense but the divine power of self within you). Elaborate cowardice nothing more.
Society existed before you were born. But this is the perfect example of people identifying with something that is outside of themselves.
In French chivalry novels, there is the metaphorical place known as the "Perilous Chapel". To understand the metaphor you need to know that a church is not a building but the community around the building. A collective noun. While a Chapel is a building with no set congregation. So when a knight walks into this perilous chapel they are free to identify with whatever collective they choose. The word "collective" is unfair because it draws attention to the state of singularity and plurality. Which nullifies the conflict all together.
Lancelot walks into a chapel (alone), and a conflict of interest arises from the different collective he belongs to. Where favoring one means betraying another. He's a son, he's a brother, a friend, a lover, a champion, a dream, a saint. And when he walks out of there, he's going to be a disappointment to someone! But again, he's alone. The only person he needs to worry about is himself, his own well being.
In the French superhero cartoon, Ladybug and Cat Noir, they do this with Cat Noir. He is a son, a friend, a side-kick, a boyfriend. The conflict is perceivable, but it's unreal at times. To the point that there is a fan theory that Cat Noir is some kind of artificial construct.
I saw that thread on /x/
was that you?
How much of practising pixel art would it take to get on "good enough" level to make your own assets?
Does a year sound close enough?
Stop procrastinating by asking stupid questions and start practicing. I don't care what your moron logic is for asking, it's a moronic question with no definitive answer.
I'm a total fricking amateur, here's something I made.
You can do it anon, trust me. Art is 20% talent, 80% practice practice practice practice practice practice.
if you work all day and you genuinely remain open-minded for learning and trying out different things in order to learn, if you challenge yourself constantly and have a solid consistency of both your workflow and the level of goals that you achieve on a regular basis, then around a year sounds like a good estimation
if you just dabble into it, don't take it seriously, don't put in the time and effort, sit on 4ch all day, then you will become bitter, depressed and this could extend to more than a decade of misery and low quality of life
pixel art isn't even as hard as any other medium of art, it also lends itself to a lot of ambiguity where it doesn't even matter if you study all of the art fundamentals either, that's why so many people do it. If you want to get to the end result of having great skill and pieces then
1. Learn to enjoy the process
2. Take it seriously
3. Put in the time and effort
4. Challenge yourself constantly
5. Achieve goals rather than mindless grind
Depend on talent I guess. I can't get gud in drawing pixel no matter how hard I try so I just give up and hand draw on high resolution file and just shrink it.
How high res do you draw? How much do you shrink?
Range from 400dpi to 216dpi, all shrink to 72 dpi.
I loves pixel art. I just don't have the talent to do it, sad.
Thank you good knight, imo your style are far more memorable then mine. Godspeed to you sir!
I prefer this, I'm tired of pixel art.
Nooo don't share my brilliant idea
God, I wish I had your art skills man. Always so impressive.
Thanks for asking for advice. That being said, you'll never make it with that mindset, because you will never be good enough for anything if you don't make anything. I don't know what kind of mental illness possesses people on this earth to just delay beginning with anything creative, but it's not the way to go. You don't do practice before you start making assets, you practice as you make assets. You don't fricking spend a year brainlessly putting pixels together and get good enough to make a game, you either make shit with a goal in mind, like a character, or an area, or even just a single building or object, or you let your hand guide you and just create something out of your ass then give it purpose post-creation.
Accept the fact you're a lost little child in terms of expertise and that your first attempts at it are not going to be very much good... then fricking do it anyway. Even if it looks like a very compressed scribble, don't scrap it, cherish it. You can always improve pixel stuff later.
Also I'd suggest starting with ms paint, other programs have plenty of quality of life features, and transparency REALLY helps with animation, but if you can't make pixel art with ms paint, you just can't make pixel art. That's your filter, and if you can't get past it, cheat.
So tldr, the answer is now, the answer is to just start now.
Anyone know what class Events on the map are instantiated (is that the correct term for JavaScript?) from in MZ?
I thought they would be created from the Game_Event class, but the "this" keyword doesn't seem to work anywhere. A null instance called $gameEvent doesn't even exist like say $gameMap.
For the record I figured it out and made my own chase event.
Can we please get back onto the topic of RM dev, if the animeposters and the schizos have had their fill?
I fricking love making weird shit. What's your weirdest shit?
My weirdest shit is this, but i still haven't implemented it into my game, sprite isn't even done yet
if i made a game in a pirated version of MV and later buy MV, can i just move my files from the pirated version to the legit version without problem?
>can't make custom art
What do?
how come?
Mate, not being funny - I'm not what I'd describe as an artist. I literally just open paint.net and use my mouse to do every piece of art in the game. You can do it, all that's standing between you and success is time.
SOUL
What kind of shit do you need?
How much of a pain would be to implement a harvest moon gameplay loop in rpg maker?
Not hard, but rpg maker feels too clunky and it wouldn't be fun.
What should i use?
A lot of events and variables if you want NPC's to react to your actions.
Seasons would be a tedious to implement with calendars, all those alternate tilesets or just by making four separate seasons versions for each map.
But if you want just some farming/gardening in between dungeon raids, it would be easy.
Im making a game based on the shadowrun universe using mostly RTP, don't know how far I can get but i have the skills (no rigger-decker since I couldn't think of how that could happen), any advice n how to adapt in MZ? So far im using shin megami tensei strange journey inspired skills
How do I make an rpg that people want to play?
First you find a real person [check]
They'll tell you the rpg they want made
[check]
and then?
and then you close all your internet tabs.
Navigate to WindowsSystem32driversecthosts
open it in a text editor like notepad.
copy and paste these lines:
127.0.0.1 boards.Ganker.org
127.0.0.1 boards.Ganker
Bring some water bottle and food rations.
Turn off your phone.
Lock your door.
Begin the Death March to the Parallel World
>Not just making a game you would enjoy playing instead of being a people pleaser
Youve lost before the game has even started. Make something fun that you think is really good but actually try and work hard at it. See what happens.
>be anon
>open RMMZ
>load sample map "World 1"
>Aug. 3rd
>Solar Storm Hits
>Wake up inside game project
>there's nothing here.
Spooky.
How would you handle a fishing side activity in an RPG?
Fish collecting just because it is possible or for prizes, selling fish for more money, using fish as consumables/crafting for dishes which are better than normal consumables.
Just don't recreate that derpy fishing gauge minigame.
>Just don't recreate that derpy fishing gauge minigame
Yeah, I'd sooner have it be something like RNG where you trade a resouce like worms for a type of fish.
how are you able to find out which game is made with a specific rpg maker engine?
The logo of Game.exe, if it's a dragon it's VX Ace, the unicorn/knight chess piece is VX, the floating house is MV, and I don't remember MZ. You can also tell by the tile size, VX and Ace are 32x32px, while MV is 48x48, MZ has included tilesize variation in one of its updates, so to distinguish it you can look at the folder structure. Same for all the earlier versions.
>MZ has included tilesize variation in one of its updates
How do you do that?
does anyone know if Little Hat World received a full english fanslation?
cool, someone remembers
it's very close to being finished
yea, I'm pretty excited to play it. do you have a webpage where you'll be announcing the game when its complete; or do I just hafta get back in contact on the boards?
no clue right now, sorry
i would say check back around these threads in a month or so and at the very least i'll be shilling it by then to drum up interest
Progress has been pretty steady all things considered but it really goes to show that even with little or no setbacks my initial predictions were wildly off the mark.
Please wait warmly.
>Post your work-in progress or what your currently developing.
Working on a lewd RPG inspired by old-school isometric games from the early 2000s like BG2, IWD2, etc.
We recently put out a beta with some 5 hours of content.
>RPG Maker MV and MZ use a special snowflake interface skin instead of the default windows interface skin used in VX and prior
>Program randomly crashes whenever it wants and has memory leaks
Many such examples!
My 35% coupon for MZ is expiring soon, convince me to not buy it.
Spend the $ you would waste on MZ instead commissioning people on fiverr to draw porn of the RTP characters. This is a far more productive waste of your dollars.
Okay let's have an answer from someone who's not a complete moron.
MZ was 40% off a couple of weeks ago. I don't know MZ's price where you are buying, so check the value here.
https://steamdb.info/app/1096900/
See though that's what I find appealing about WRPGE, I much prefer the idea of building all the stats and damage formulas and everything myself vs. RPGM where you are given a system and you'd better like it, because getting it to do what you want if you don't like it is a monstrous pain in the ass.
It's very very similar to MV, most of the benefits (namely performance) can be achieved by using a newer version of nw.js, mapping is still inferior to XP and forces you to use 48x48 tiles (there is a plugin that is available for MV that lets you use an external mapping program and use any tile resolution, 16x16, 32x32, whatever you want), all the borderline mandatory plugins (yanfly among others) have been paywalled and on top of that have been obfuscated which kills compatibility with other plugins (this has basically killed the plugin ecosystem for MZ), RPG Maker Unite is coming out very soon™ and looks to be far superior than MV and MZ anyway.
tl;dr no real advantages over MV and many disadvantages, you're better off sticking with MV or an earlier version or waiting for Unite which in theory should be out at some point in the coming months.
>mapping is still inferior to XP and forces you to use 48x48 tiles
Rest of it is true, what the actual frick Yanfly? And MZ is lacking so many basic functions like self variables and additional conditions it feels like Yan and friends are literally paying Enterbrain into NOT including it.
Okay I wasn't aware about that, a lot of steam reviews I saw around launch were complaining about 48x48 tile size, that is a very welcome change since using an external mapper is not an elegant solution.
Yeah honestly that's viable, it's nice being able to make something with Ace and earlier and know it'll run on absolute toasters, the main disadvantage IMO is the inability to do pixel perfect upscaling at fullscreen resolutions even with something like mkxp-z forcing you to either deal with ugly scaling artifacts or have a bilinear filter over everything. This is something that 99% of people either don't notice or don't care about, it just bugs the shit out of me. If anyone here knows of a solution for this I'd love to know.
I have no fate in Unite.
I will stick with Ace.
>RPG Maker Unite
What does it have to offer?
More powerful mapping and organization tools, easier to work with different assets (
heard wrong, tile size in unite will be 96x96 which allows you to use both 32x32 and 48x48 tilesets at pixel perfect upscaling, they've already released a free upscaling tool that does it for you if you don't have another program to do it), performance *should* be superior to MV/MZ since it's built on a proper game engine and not webapp runtimes - despite its reputation unity's performance with 2D games is completely fine in the hands of a competent developer, whether or not unite is being made by a competent developer remains to be seen.
An actual good fricking backend. Seriously I hate how clunky shit feels in RPGM sometimes.
There's two ways to make this effect and a lot of people choose the wrong one.
I understood that you can't use graphic resources like tilesets from previous RPG Makers in Unite, that's a big minus.
right? People do that for free.
Isn't Unity that program that outputs dogshit text wrapping I've been seeing in a frickton of games lately?
Can you imagine a world where someone edits RPG Maker's editor to not be dogshit?
Maniacs for VX Ace?
Every time I look at Maniacs it makes me seriously consider switching to 2003. See, here's my problem.
2003: Maniacs, has features later ones removed for no reason in default program.
VX Ace: Frickton of scripting and resources, I'm mildly proficient in Ruby.
MV: Also has lots of scripting and resources but old resources and VX scripts are completely incompatible because Javascript, system reqs UP+++++
MZ: The big script creators paywalled their stuff and don't even release a demo of their scripts with simple functions, so I'd end up spending money on something that MIGHT work, MV scripts incompatible
I don't even want to make an RPG, I want to make something like Corpse Party.
How about Wolf RPG Editor?
RPG Mismanaged creators spit out their dummies and capsize their prams if you use their resources in anything but RPG Mismanaged, and I inherited a lot of the DLC from my late friend.
Jesus christ Wolf is like a fighting game guide filled with frame data and X/Y hitbox info, it's everything I want but I can't wrap my head around it. I mean, yeah in my early RPG Maker days it took me a bit to understand even simple things but this is like loading up someone else's RPG savefile and finding yourself in an area you don't recognize, he's doing a Lv1 challenge, and the protagonist is nowhere to be seen.
Even just playing the sample game I can tell this is what I want. Now I know how Griffith feels about his castle.
How good is machine TLing these days for stuff like instructions/tutorials and such that doesn't need to read nice but just needs to be legible and understandable, it might be worth it to run some of the Japanese WRPGE resources through it since the english language manual is good but not quite enough. Alternatively I have enough disposable income that I could pay someone to do it.
I spent the last three hours trying to work with Wolf and it's just beyond my understanding. Cluttered interfaces are really bad for my focus.
I mean, the first ever Corpse Party game had party system and a boss fight. Kind of.
If you do not want combat and just walking and puzzles, you can use any version of the engine. I think even Towelket man now makes games in MV while still doing his primitive pixel art for everything.
Wolf is cool but requires a lot of creating/tweaking of basic systems and formulas before you start making levels. It is flexible but not in a "plug and play" way. Makes you anxious.
>and just walking and puzzles
I ran into the following issues when making the basic aspects of my game
- Needed to create a plugin to check individual digits in a variable for a lockpicking minigame.
- Needed to find a plugin to give self-variables to doors so they could have consistency for said minigame.
- The simplest way to indicate searching or effects (battle animations) could be exploited to render you immune to the slasher for a few seconds.
- There is absolutely no way to apply the effect of a battle skill to a hero outside of battle.
- Needed to find a pathfinding plugin to replace the dogshit that is RPG Maker pathfinding.
- Needed to completely rebuild a mechanic because holding down a button is polled every frame and there is no way to digitally release it.
- Needed to find a plugin to customize slip damage since I decided to run on single-digit HP but rare damage
- Needed to find a plugin to reuse events that reoccur on m- you get my point.
The point is that many of these should be fricking basic features and not a paywalled plugin.

The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. No other game I've played had a 17 year old bishonen guy drink a 14 year old girl's piss and chase her down the hall to rape her, only to wind up getting anally raped by a 32 year old fat man. I still remember the scene where a 16-17 girl was hiding under a bed as her same age best friend was having sex with that same 32 year old fat guy on top. She heard every moan, bed shake and sound. In the wrong end she was discovered under the bed by her friend and made to join. A most terrifying scene was when an unwilling girl relives another girl's sex memories. The girl in the memory consented but the reliving girl didn't. It didn't matter that she was mentally screaming, her body in the memory did all the motions and actions as in history. It's like mind control rape except the victim was fully aware. Another scene the same girl and a friend were almost raped in a magic sex ritual, saved by the girl's older sister, and the backlash made the older sister want to rape her younger sister and friend.
The e-girl in this pic is freakishly lewd and once disguised herself as a teenage girl, fricked a boy until he nearly came, transformed back saying
>You thought you were having sex with a highschooler weren't you? I'm an elementary schooler all along!
And leglocks that boy, forcing him to cum inside her unprotected, when he screams in fear upon learning this. This isn't even getting into the tentacles, the gay sex, the lesbian sex, the incest, the sequel's mother/daughter lesbian scene, etc. The first chapter alone contains lots of lesbian sex scenes with an unavoidable girl jerking off in the bathroom. Truly horror is intrinsically connected with sexuality.
not sure if pedophile or neophile
Most or all of the text in the post you're replying to is a copypasta that is a common reply to any mention of that VN or game. I don't really know why he/people post(s) it, but I thought I'd let you know.
damn, making pixel art is harder than I thought
I LOVE MIMICS, CHARLIE
I LOVE MIMIIIIIIIIIIIICS
Forgot the goddamn png. What a life.
How do I find out every individual letter of an inputted name? I need to show pictures depending on each letter.
It's the index of a string.
stringName[0]
stringName[1]
stringName[2]
$gameActors._data[1]._name[0].toUpperCase() == "R"
^in a conditional branch, with Actor1 named "Reid", this would return true.
.toUpperCase() will convert lower case letter for simpler logic. Idk if you'd have different pictures for "r" and "R"
If you name the files "r.png" or "R.png" you might just showpicture by script call rather than with the event commands.
$gameScreen.showPicture(pictureId, name, origin, x, y, scaleX, scaleY, opacity, blendMode);
So you'd replace the picture name with $gameActors._data[1]._name[0]
$gameScreen.showPicture(1, $gameActors._data[1]._name[0], 0, x, y, 100, 100, 255, 0);
$gameScreen.showPicture(2, $gameActors._data[1]._name[1], 0, x, y, 100, 100, 255, 0);
$gameScreen.showPicture(3, $gameActors._data[1]._name[2], 0, x, y, 100, 100, 255, 0);
$gameScreen.showPicture(4, $gameActors._data[1]._name[3], 0, x, y, 100, 100, 255, 0);
Boom. 4 show picture commands, automatically set to the Actor's first 4 letters.
Holy crap, it works beautifully. Thanks!
Can this be done with variables in MZ?
Yes. Something like $gameVariables.value(1)[0]
(1) being the variable number. Pretending it was storing a text string "ABC"
[0] would be index 0 of that string => "A"
I meant more checking the individual digits of a variable.
Put this in a plugin, ignore the incompatibility message, it was made for MV but it works in MZ.
function checkVarDigit(gamevar,pos){
var chkvar=$gameVariables.value(gamevar);
chkvar = chkvar.toString(); /*Convert in String*/
chkvar = chkvar.split(''); /*Convert in Array*/
return Number(chkvar[pos]);
}
If you use "If:Script:checkVarDigit(1,2) == 4" in a fork it will check if the third digit is 4, and return True if it does. Keep in mind that leading zeros are not considered part of the digit, so 0040 wont work but 1040 will.
Cheers mate.
I would think it works the same.
How much money did VisuStella pay the devs to not include basic features that just happen to be available in a $100+tip plugin package? $50000? $200000?
"Waaaaaaaaaaah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, people with talent are asking to be paid for their work, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!"
If you're not happy with it, make it yourself.
And risk getting harassed by their fanclub or sued for "plagiarizing"? The developers explicitly say they wont add self-variables which are, OH LOOK! That'll be $100 + tip
If you work on something, you should get paid. This western degeneracy bordering from jealousy to genuine communist sentiment is a cancer on our culture and nobody that is serious and passionate about what they do should ever take anything you have to say seriously. Get a fricking job or just shut up and focus on your own paycheck.
Oh you can get paid, nothing wrong with that, but when you actively conspire to prevent a company from adding features to their base product that's a problem. I'd also like to remind you that self-variables had a free plugin for MV that is mysteriously not being updated to MZ.
Want enemies to drop more than three items? That'll be $100 plus tip.
While I'm at it; "Want to fix an error in the game because you're part of a team but it's a typo in one of my plugin tags? That'll be another $100+tip"
>if you work on something, you should get paid
>meanwhile in Japan, at the cost of absolutely zero dollars...
Do you want to edit the inventory? $100 plus tip.
Do you want to toggle things in-game? $100 plus tip.
Do you want to warp to a specific map? $100 plus tip.
Do you want to force a self-switch? $100 plus tip.
Do you want to debug things in battle? $100 plus tip.
DO YOU WANT TO ADJUST
A VARIABLE
IN THE DEBUG MENU
BY INPUTTING A NUMBER
INSTEAD OF INCREASING IT BY 1 OR 10?
A FEATURE THAT WAS IN RPG MAKER 2003 AND PRIOR?
ONE HUNDRED FRICKING DOLLARS PLUS TIP
It's fricking obvious that the VisuStella team is threatening or bribing the RPG Maker devs into NOT adding these very basic features. There is literally no excuse for the variables thing, literally none.
100$ is pennies in the western world. You've clearly never paid raid, cost of living or basically have had anything beyond 1000$ in your bank account at any given point and that's being generous. I don't see how 2nd world poorgays or neets get to decide anything. Get a fricking job.
I actually have plenty of money, I've also spent enough money on this program and I expect it to have basic features for debugging at minimum. Why does the feedback forum explicitly say they wont add self variables, which is included in the $100+tip plugin? Companies have been fined millions for antitrust on far more ridiculous grounds.
>I actually have plenty of money
Doubt. If that's the case, your mentality is stuck in poordom. This is a business, that is their practice. I've seen paywalls on mods that go beyond thousands of dollars and shadier shit than this, calm down.
I don't have a problem with paying people for work, I have a problem when it starts smelling like they're actively preventing others from doing the same thing.

I'm making a quest porn game about my old piano teacher
How many free Japanese plugins for MZ do the same things as paid Visust*lla plugins?
>People using RPGMaker
>Complain that it has to be used like RPGMaker
You know with any other engine I would get it, but this has been the state of things for how long? A decade and half? You guys should really know what you get into by now.
Are you autistic perhaps?
As if your reputation is anyone's responsibility but your own.
A better question is why did Gotcha Gotcha Games fail to hire anyone after 2 years.
Are you thinking about the ways in which the world is crumbling around you? How even your greatest efforts have only managed to slow the decay and the rot? How you've given up all hope of progress and prosperity and now every moment is spent simply trying to avoid the worst case scenario?
No. It is just you.
I want to bully rpg maker devs in public, so I could cuddle them in private.
how would you guys make rpg battles fun, engaging and not grindy?
I'd grind on your mum and engage her
I'll have fun battling your mum's sweet hot c u n t
Steal from Paper Mario
do NOT steal from YIIK:
(though I like how powerful the mimic feels in this episode, I want to use that for a game where you control a lot of replaceable dudes)
3 and 4 digit numbers feel smooth, 1 and 2 digit numbers feel crunchy and powerful. It makes losing 12 HP a big deal.
Having heard a lot about tabletop RPGs from the old /tg/, I like the impression I get that tabletop games do not frick around. A starting wizard can have like 4 hp, traps can cause instant death, the language different characters can speak has a major role in who you can even talk to... it's rad. You get the distinct impression the world is not waiting on you.
Also apparently FF-10 had a great battle system but I only saw it from let's plays.
Personally though I don't like it, it feels too smooth.

Underage detected.
Half of it is in the quantity and placement of encounters; if you're going to have a low number of encounters each should feel significant and dangerous (think LISA which has almost entirely unique encounters many of which can be quite difficult if you don't know what you're doing), if you're going to have lots of encounters the player should be able to get through them very quickly (early SMT games are notorious for their high encounter rates but many battles can be ended in <10 seconds if you know what you're doing). Also, consider the reason behind encounter conventions: it all originates from early D&D editions wherein the dungeons would have both monsters who would always be in certain rooms as well as "roaming" monsters that the party might encounter randomly - this is where the concept of random encounters originates from. You can replicate this by making dungeons that have scripted encounters in certain rooms as well as either random encounters (with a lower encounter rate) or events scattered around that are set to randomly spawn an encounter, maybe triggering it when the player enters a room. Regardless, I definitely err towards having a smaller number of more difficult, significant encounters where the potential for a TPK is present in each one rather than a large quantity that slow whittles down the player's resources but don't pose much threat on their own.
a lot of people like turn-based battles pretty much how they are by default. give the player a ton of options, let them figure out which tools to use for each battle, make most encounters optional and incentivized
use default battle system with 30 step random encounters and actually track down and kill anyone that says it's shit
Took some time to set this up but I like how the battle system is turning out.
looks great
Hand drawing new animation frames? Why not. The RTP is soulless and unfitting anyway
And yet you choose to make the background disproportionatly bigger than the characters
The battlers are pretty placeholder, plan's always been to redo them at some point. Either that or to just hand wave it as an homage to old FF that did the same thing
>handwave it
What was this about being soulless?
Handwaving has led to a lot of soulfulness. Seethe more about your RTP dating sim.
>defending the RTP, ever
I will defend RM2K's RTP to my deathbed.
What version of RPGM are you working on?
MV
Nta but what plugin are you using for the character portraits in-battle?
SRD's battle status customiser, it rules
That was a good thread.
