You couldn't pay me to use that piece of shit.
Just spend the $2 on 2k3 and apply the Maniacs patch and you're good to go. Anything worth doing can be done with that setup.
What is this kind of gameplay called? Where your actions update everything else. I like this and want to learn how to make this kind of game. Frick the normal RPG maker combat.
i think it started with Rogue as the start of the roguelike/lite genre stuff, but this game in particular is emulating the mystery dungeon style of it.

Play Jupiter Hell.
They all are. The thing you're missing is an RPG_RT.exe (the actual RPG Maker 2000/2003 launcher) in the game folder. Most VIPPERs used to leave it out and expected you to supply your own back in the days, and some still do.

Just copy+paste an exe from a different project, preferably a JP one so that text displays properly when you launch it.

oh, didnt knew that.
thanks a lot! i mean, its not like these games can be multiplayer, but still.
It was a huge step down from 2k3 in every way except for having an extremely high quality set of default map graphics.
Nobody asked for or wanted RPG Maker to have Ruby scripting - they wanted the default editor/event code to have greater capabilities. People (mostly insane Japanese devs) were already making things in 2k/3 which were beyond the scope of the engine, and instead of opening up the floodgates, they said >learn to code in a real language
when good 2k/3 devs were literally using the base editors' eventing systems as something of an assembly language.
The first 5 webms are made with 2k3 and the Maniacs Patch, which drastically enhances the default editor's capabilities, adding in important features like String Variables and the ability to display arbitrary strings of text as images on screen, and MUCH more.
https://bingshan1024.github.io/steam2003_maniacs/
The rest were made in bone stock RPG Maker 2k.
The people who made these games didn't need to use RPGMaker to make them. This is just showing off their own skills. What engine is used is irrelevant.
Anon, all RPG Maker 2k/3 (and effectively later) projects can be considered "open source" since you can open any project in its respective editor and view the event code raw. Whether you can make any sense of it and reverse engineer it for your own needs is up to you.
https://w.atwiki.jp/vip_rpg/pages/702.html
Why do people tout 2003 around like it's the be all end all of RPG Maker? Most people just call it what it is: Outdated.
All cope from people who were never going to make anything anyway.
It doesn't matter what engine you use or how you make it. Make a good, fun game? I'll play it. It's that easy.
You know how to code? 2k3 is all about eventing, MV/MZ is javascript. Does 2k3 have the most assets? Yes, if you want to use graphics from actual games, ff6 tilesets character sprites etc
That sounds like a strong argument for MV (coding) or 2k3 (assets). How asset-starved is MV?
Also how are things with custom systems (e.g. if I wanted to kill myself and hand build a spheregrid). All my knowledge of Rpgmakers is from 15 years ago playing shitty (and soulful) 2k3 games
>How asset-starved is MV?
Everything past VXA (the last one that people made a shit ton of free assets for, but it's all 404'd now) is asset starved in the sense that you're either expected to buy paid assets, commission or hire an artist, or do everything by yourself. If you're going the commercial route, 2k3 is also no-go since 90% of the assets are from the wild west days of internet (stolen from real games etc)

I assume few people are going commercial, as is I don't know how I would convince someone to play my basement made games
You know how to code? 2k3 is all about eventing, MV/MZ is javascript. Does 2k3 have the most assets? Yes, if you want to use graphics from actual games, ff6 tilesets character sprites etc
XP also use Ruby as a programming language (it was popular in Japan in the 2000s)
2k3 is to the point where you can literally generate event code in JavaScript if you wanted to. Even the default eventing can be done in its own script called TPC if you want to. It's easier and faster to write the eventing (and access commands not available in the eventing menus) by producing it just like normal code these days in an external editor once you've got most of the commands memorized and macros made.
that would be excellent. I remember hating using RM2k3 (again 15 years ago) because so many things had to be clicked through manually.
Actually on that note, is it possible to programmatically do things? (E.g. I want to write some code to just automatically replace all tiles in an area based on some logic, rather than clicking my way through it)
counterpoint: with ruby support you have FFI meaning you can actually do anything as opposed to hacking stuff on top of the even system
not sure if the newer JS versions have FFI but that's huge
there was a french plugin suite that amoungst other things liberated all the ruby code from the default editor and added proper DX11 swapchain support so it wasn't stuck in a tiny window

for reasons why.
2k is still fun to tool around in, and if you can't into custom battle systems and hate 2k3's, it may still be worth having 2k just because, but it's utterly BTFO by 2k3+the Maniacs Patch nowadays.
>Yup, and even then Essentials is a bloated unoptimized mess
They recently fixed the performance for this. I used to get like 20 fps with screen tear, now it's 144+ with no screen tearing.
rpg maker games are doodoo
my excuse for not making unity games is I don't have any grand ideas, I had ideas when I was young and inept but now that I know how to make things I have none
i would like to make a pokemon style project, not 'game' per se, but something like a sandbox for my 'mons' and game ideas, prolly with almost no story... but its annoying that theres no way to get multiplayer.
XP isn't all trash, I think it does enable a lot of freedom with the scripting. But it's also clunky as hell and cannot run past 40 fps. It's as outdated as 2000. and like it's name says, ti was only a good fit for Windows XP.
2003 might be old, but it got a lot of support, so it can still be used well to this day. Though it might not be as a good as some of the most recent version... I never tested them so I can't talk about those
>what's the best tool for an ideas guy to make an action RPG

i was about to say you're wrong but then realized
vxace is so old at this point that most of the support and resources for it have 404'd (though same applies for xp and 2k3 too but at least 2k3 has maniac, charas and a frickload of unprotected old games you can copy paste assets from)
if you're not familiar with the evolution of rpgm scenes throughout the late early 10's vxace was by far the biggest one until MV's release. XP has always been the underdog that had the smallest userbase. in terms of relevancy/support/resources vxa definitely dropped off after MV, but unless you're willing to throw out a frickton of money vxa is still way more accessible than MZ
2k3/MV (depends what you're going for) >>>>>> VXA >>>> MZ (unless you pay for artists and scripts or make them yourself) > XP
A japanese guy remade the entirety of SMT I in it and expanded it with additional characters, dialogue and possible branching paths.
it also had enhanced backgrounds that didn't look like shit so in a way has become a pretty decent remaster.
it even got translated to english so it's a pretty good way to get the game easy for free.
>it even got translated to english
by someone who didn't even give enough of a frick to make sure that the text doesn't run off the screen. literally the very first text boxes of the game can't be read in their entirety because the "fan" responsible for this wasn't enough of a "fan" to do bare basic QA on their garbage MTL.

Link me the JP version or give me the complete name so I might find it senpai
Worst part is, the game's actual font it shipped with was a decent proportional font (even though it was fricking italic, but that made it sort of interesting). Long before that one translation came out, I was asked by someone to look into the game and see if I could make any sense of the eventing/scripting and get a working proof of concept, but I hate working with VX and didn't really feel like going further with the R&D.
Shame I did - the blatant machine translated and not quality checked game will still get attention from people because it's "good enough" when SMT deserves a fair bit more respect, fan game or otherwise.
I'm getting those for my future kid. I love making games and it's my current job, but I wish I had played with RPG maker much earlier instead of using only the warcraft 3 editor for years
in that case don't bother, maniac patch shills will tell you you can make a mmofpsrhythmgta6ofmightandscarletdevil with 2k3 but it's absolutely impractical to use rpgm for anything other than basic dq/ff jrpgs, horror/surreal walking sims and vns
i never said it wasn't possible to do so, yet you still felt the need to get offended by facts

Yeah. Basically. There's a chance I'll have more motivation for working on it once I'm done with refactoring it to make the custom systems work more harmoniously with the info from the default database, but there's also a chance I'll feel less motivated to actually >make game
afterwards. Anyone who's done 2k/3 custom systems dev knows it's a pain, and anything you can do to make it quicker and less of a pain adds to the chance you'll walk away with a finished product.

What compelled you to try to do this in an engine that isn't suited for it instead of something else? Surely this isn't easier.
>Is there a point of using RPG Maker when I got Gamemaker
No, not at all. Gamemake is vastly more flexible and people telling you to use RPG shit over it, even for RPGs, are just shiteaters miring you in their muck.
I pirated it and the other versions ages ago.
Best way to get to the content of porn games without having to grind through a bunch of stupid encounters.
I made an RPG using that one spic's translation back in like 2001 over a week. It was terrible. I used Cecil's dark knight sprites to rap and had Dr. Pepper be an ultimate healing item. Fricking kill me for remembering this.
I just see it as a product of its time in combination of being young
I had way worse, I remember being 11 or 12 and making one that had an optional thing where you "played" F-Zero (it was playback of random gameplay) and if you selected that you thought it sucked Captain Falcon would rev up a Falcon Punch and you had 5 minutes to get to another house in the village and get as far into their basement or bunker as you could to ensure safety and when you come out the town would've been destroyed if I had gotten that far.
>I just see it as a product of its time in combination of being young

Sounds very odd considering how fricking j-.. greedy those frickers are.
Let me guess, a new version of RPGMaker is coming out soon?
>conspiracies theories
homie i've been following rpgmaker since fricking 2000.
Those frickers always sell their shit at absolutely goddamn moronic prices despite the huge competition there is on the market, just because they have an userbase equally as moronic willing to buy.
Plugins and yanfly did more damage to RPG Maker's users than anything.
Instead of having to learn how to make stuff yourself, you can now pay for plugins that probably still won't do what you want them to do and walk away more frustrated than before.
2k and 2k3 force you to get good. Even if you were to copy paste event code from someone else, you'd have no choice but to figure out how it works and how to apply it to your own projects. Chances are you'd wind up re-eventing the whole thing anyway since RPGM stuff tends to be geared for just one specific project.
[...]
You've never used RPG Maker OR written in any assembly language. You think this sounds ridiculous, but think again.
Just as an example, in the 6502 assembly(which the NES uses) you can write: >COMPARE > LDA $10 > CMP $20 > BEQ EQUAL > ADC $01 > JMP COMPARE >EQUAL > STA $30
Which is the RPGM equivalent of: >Label: 1 >Control Variables: V[01] = 16 >Conditional Branch: V[01] == 32
Variables: V[48] = V[01] >Else
Variables: V[01] += 1 >>Jump to Label: 1 >End
tl;dr you're a moron.
Is the eventing in the new versions dumbed down compared to 2003?

By default, yes. Variable ops, for example, will never let you choose indirect designation (pointers) in the default dialogue in any maker since XP. You can still technically use it by using script commands, but to people who don't know about those, this method of using variables is out of reach.
Now, 2k3+Maniacs will let you do whatever the frick you want with variables and conditions. Much of the bullshit/workaround crap people have nightmares about from old school 2k3 are gone. Hell, we've even got || and && to work with instead of having to draw up walls of conditionals like in the old days. It's magical shit.
I've always wanted to make an Ace Attorney-like in RPG maker, but I'm completely moronic when it comes to coding and could never figure out how to make stuff work.
Good news, anon. It's been done before, and it's now easier to do than it's ever been.

I've definitely fallen into the trap of premade plugins. Now I'm coding a battle system from scratch by myself.
i have deleted most of my maps ive made but heres one that i could find
i really love the challenge of making something elaborate using the default assets
when i tested this map, all the "walkable" layers are all messed up because i didnt really understood how it works
i know the more skilled map guys just draw placeholder tiles first then paint over them when its all done
you will have to manually combine a specific tile combinations using a 3rd party art program
if i was going to learn how to do that, then i might as well force myself to go deep into pixel art and i cant really be bothered

Same. My sister watched me play and she told me to stop playing that game about planting trees and farming. She BTFO me without even knowing.

It's actually a little more performant because of the updated nw.js and PIXI it uses, as well as having some other optimizations that make maps with 100+ events more stable. But aside from that, they're pretty much identical as you said. The new event mode lists all events on the current map on the left and makes it slightly easier to browse I guess. Also, the new animation editor allows for 3d particle effects to be used instead of only 2d spritesheets, but it's a bit more of a hassle.
>about to get it for free >check the festival page >WE ARE GIVING XP FOR FREE >all versions are linked in the page >EXCEPT fricking XP
Jesus Fricking Christ... Greedy until the very end.
Disagree. If you know how the studio works, owning XP is a legal way for you to use their assets. And for free >"All RTP assets may only be used within RPG Maker products."
None just unironically use gamemaker if you want to do 2D games with almost no coding.
Heck, even modern engines like Unity and UE are slowly starting to get blueprints, aka make-a-game-without-coding.
maniac patch removes a frickton of limitations from rm2k3 you can basically do anything with it, it'll just be way more tedious than using gamemaker/godot/unity etc, rm2k3 uses 16bit graphics and has the largest amount of free assets available (most of it stolen)
MV is modern, uses javascript, easier to use, but it will be way harder to make your game not feel like RPGMakerslop if that's something someone is concerned about (most likely not you)
so really if you want SOULful 16bit old school 90's aesthetics then go for rm2k3 everytime
I'm a software engineer, but I'm lazy as frick and I just want to make something quick and dirty. What's the best route? Writing Ruby or Javascript isn't a dealbreaker at all.
Definitely go with mv or mz for Javascript.
I'm also in the same boat. Could learn unity/godot/gamemaker but rpg maker is just too comfy. Its main advantage over all other game engines is that the game is already "made". Battle system, tileset + overworld movement, eventing, save/load system, music/sfx system etc. are provided for you. All you need to do is rearrange them.
(Customizing them can be a pain, but that's the tradeoff you're making. You can modify them directly but I just use plugins for system overhauls like battle systems; way less headache)
Follow the in-engine tutorial or watch a youtube series (I just typed in "rpg maker tutorial" on google and watched the first result's playlist in 2x speed) and you'll get it right away if you have any programming experience.
I made a card game with it last year, using a battle system plugin + js code I wrote to handle all other stuff like shuffling, drawing, discarding, etc. All of them use common events and standard js. Haven't got time to play around with the engine nowadays, but I usually reserve some time to make some games during holidays when I can
People who can code should have a really easy time making something unique in RPG Maker. Something that will be very welcome in the sea of low effort indie games.
I would say that if you really want it to succeed you should make a horror game. It might not be as popular as it was back in 2010 but if you code in jumpscares in a way that nobody expects or seen before, Youtubers would eat that up and give free marketing. Those games can be really short too.
I've always wanted to make a game and I'm creative but as soon as I open RPG Maker I just lose all motivation
>can imagine, write notes, and build up my story and characters in my head for weeks/months >even draw pixel art and write scripts for scenes and draw layouts for towns and dungeons >open RPG maker >close RPG maker
if you're talking about XP, yeah there's no reason to use it in 2024
is free
there's also no reason to buy/legally obtain any rpg maker until you're at the point where you're going to release a fully completed project
2k3 is the easiest one to obtain for free and also the best one for actually getting good at developing a project
Start off simple and learn the basics of what the editor does. You're constantly going to be coming up with new ways to do things as you learn, so make a few small projects and see them through to completion. Maybe join the jams over at /vrpg/ when they're happening and strive to put SOMETHING out.
Getting a handle on variables/switches/conditionals is probably the most thing, since learning to use variable pointers/indirect reference is what will start to take you from beginner to intermediate dev skill.
Ultimately, you learn how to use RPGM (and how to program) by making something and finding problems you want to solve along the way, then attempting to solve them. But you'll only find those problems if you start making stuff.
Go hang with the regular jammers if you want to learn their secrets and git gud. Picrel is a small taste of some of the stuff that happens over there, and most of them use 2k3. Just avoid the non-jam threads, as a schizo taking refuge from the RPGM forums has started advertising/being obnoxious and shitting up the threads.
Any RpgMaker FES users here?
No custom assets
No scripting
Just you, the default assets, an horribly tedious map editor, and an event system even more restricted than rm95 that could crash without notice anytime during edition
It was the purest form of RPGmaker and the games people managed to wrench out of it were soulful

I remember using some old Hispanic translated version of some even older RPG maker (can't even remember the name). I remember it had no scripts by them. Good, cringe times.
I wanted to make some era-like game or my other idea was a dating sim kinda like Pia Carrot/Tokimeki memorial (with stats and shit). It is probably better to just use Renpy instead of this, right? I have 0 coding skills anyway.
Tried downloading that Maniacs Patch and Firefox gave me a warning put it through Virus Total and that shit have like 42 different results with keyloggers and trojan shit.
I get it, but I tried to Instal cracked illustrator once, seemingly all false positives untill I checked changes in the registry
It seems it made it so any time I'd copy cryptowallet directions it would replaced it with an specific one, dunnno why, but it did.
False positives.
Entertainingly, there was a time years ago when even Enterbrain themselves had to complain to virus scan companies because the official EN releases of 2k and 2k3 were hacked to high hell and back to include certain new features, and were throwing false positives from the default 2k/2k3 launchers and dlls.
Obviously don't run it if you don't trust it.
XP was the first to use RUBY if I remember right, its own programming language, and then each new version past that expanded and reworked, swapped, etc. It's mainly 2k/3 that still have a lack of programming, and through outside measures people figured workarounds for that anyway.
You're still gonna probably use the UI for eventing, placement and setup obviously.
No rason to use RPG maker even less so VX (the worst) when there is Fire Emblem Romhack editors, when there is custom maps and civilizations in Civilization games or whatever. RPG maker is trash.
>No rason to use RPG maker even less so VX (the worst) when there is Fire Emblem Romhack editors, when there is custom maps and civilizations in Civilization games or whatever.
I dunno if there's a market for like, RPGM as a whole, but individual games still crop up here or there that are surprise successes. Omori was RPG Maker for one example. And a 2k3-ass game is out there that's even on the goddamn PS/Xbox store.
Tales of the Drunken Paladin.
It's also quite massive and got several updated versions with big additions.
However, if you don't like jokes, you won't like the game.

>Tales of the Drunken Paladin.
I remember playing that one. Can't remember much details other than the funny shit going between the protagonist, the priest and the save hobo.
I remember I got to some point with a "strong female character" (not the witch), not sure if it was supposed to be ironic (probably was) but still felt unfunny and dropped it.
Ara Fell
Though I guess it would be a pain (and not worth it) to find the original version of the game made in 2k3. The dev updated everything in Unity like 10 years after its original release. Still has some traces of RPGM RTP though, and definitely the UI.

It isn't "schizo", nor is it about depression. The game is about Brad's regrets and his descent into madness. That latter aspect does not magically make the game "schizo". Neither definitions of the word "schizophrenic", be it psychiatric or general, align with what Lisa actually is.

Wow, they nuked the entire depot from the store. How the frick did they frick that up? Was Unity's frick up what screwed them over?
So how do community made patches/tilesets/spritesheets/plugins/etc. work in regards to releasing your game? I'm mainly thinking about 2003 but as a whole I can't imagine it being easy including modified dlls and executables with a licensed engine.
Does anyone happen to have a download link for the MV DLC tiles? I think I have most of them but I just found out theres a japanese city one that looks pretty good.
My problem with RPGMaker is either you make some terrible soulless shit or go through so many scripts, loops and hoops to make something good that at that point you're just flexing for using RPGMaker instead of an actual engine.
Writing/story oriented RPGM games are seriously overrated.
If the gameplay isn't good, I'm not going to bother with the game. It's that simple. I'll sit through the most dogshit story you can imagine as long as the game is fun to play, but I won't tolerate the opposite.
by default the gameplay is as good as snes final fantasy games. you don't need anything else from the gameplay point of view.
I mean, unless you are a zoomer.
You can definitely make something decent even without scripting knowledge. Pretty sure most of the popular RPG Maker games dont even have that much custom scripting going on. And you can always just look for premade plugins instead of creating one yourself.
When it comes to 2D rpg games, the story and writing are easily the most important part. A game can have use default assets only and no unique scripting at all, but if the story is good then it will be noticed.
Unique and well written story, plus custom assets to make a good first impression is all you need if you know what you doing. Just look at Undertale. I dont even think the story in that is good but it fricking blew up anyway.

Just check websites like Itch.io, theres all types of games there and they all get played by people with nothing better to do. Post links for the game in every website you can find and someone is bound to try the game, and if its good enough then it will be shared around automatically.
2k's default battle system is superior to 2k3. That's about it.
Official, bone-stock Steam 2k3 has all kinds of things that make it easier to use than 2k such as >spritesheeting for the Show Picture command >variable designation & indirect designation for picture layers >superior Move Picture command options >support for more keys in the Key Input Processing command >additional event commands for battle use
and more.
2k3's default battle system is garbage and has pacing issues due to the way the ATB speed scales with the number of combatants and the disparity between combatants' agility statistics, but if you can work with that and find ways to mitigate it, or simply make a custom battle system, 2k3 is better without question.
I swore that 2K23 had the standard 2K battle built into it, but I was disappointed to discover that this is not the case.
I wanted to make an RPG but now I'm just going to make a porn game with glorious 256 colors.
tfw had an idea for 2 rpg maker games and the second one especially was some batshit insane schizokino and I completely forgot what they were about, the idea for the second aligned with me reading the prince of nothing, letting what I read brew on my head for some months and then going on /misc/ and learning some interesting stuff from redpill threads. The final battle was going to be done using good memes to fight against the negative thoughtform demons and their anti-life propaganda
why were the rpgm releases so incompetently built
why didnt they come native with a fullscreen window option before rpgm mv
why cant they utilize more than 1 cpu core
why is opening a menu a super power you need 3rd party hack to accomplish
You should not be using this trash anyway. If you want something simple to dip your toe into game making just download gDevelop. It is miles simpler to grasp and you can create very modern "Flash" styled game with it.
This
You are NOT a gamedev or anything close to adjacent to one if you use drag and drop type engines like this to make low effort crapware asset flips like every RPGM game in existence
You are a phony and a nodev
Undertale ia a barely functional Game Maker newbie proyect, I don't see your point anon
What matters is the result, the player doesn't care about the esoteric engine you might have used, or how clean and readable your code might be. Results are everything.
This

why do you Black folk think anyone cares ?
I use rpgmaker because I'm not autistic enough to code and just want a vessel to tell my story's and put my music into.
Got some hours in the 3DS one cause it had an online sharing site you could post your games to
Made lots of little short story type games, shame it'll all be gone when 3DS online goes breasts up in a month or two
What's the difference between MV and MZ? The most common complaint I see is about MZ being too expensive for offering little improvement over MV, but assuming I don't care about cost, is there some pitfall I should be wary of with MZ?
nothing wrong with it if you just want to mess around the engine and make some games for fun
but compared to the newer versions it is quite outdated in terms of features and ease of use
Every time I get the itch to make a game, trying to format images into it on a large scale as CGs at a not-abysmal resolution kills me. Apologies, but the 1.34tb Pokemon eroge is forever kill.
I bought RPGmaker MV for like $26 on sale and I hated it and barely used it and when I tried to refund it steam told me to frick off because the refund window was already over, yep i'm a fricking idiot.
I think any RPG Maker will do for this purpose. I made a porn game where I only needed to use the characters, maps and pictures, so I used RPG Maker VX, and it worked fine. I just had to download some plugins to change a few things like the screen resolution.
However, I ended up abandoning RPG Maker afterwards because the graphical interface starts to become a problem later on. For example, when you go to revise your texts, when programming "traditionally" you'll have a "script" where you just read things and edit, but in RPG Maker it's a total nightmare where you have to keep opening window after window to edit little things.
Yeah, is there really no PC version of this? Frick... what a missed opportunity. I actually love the PS2 era graphics but being able to make EXEs and share them or add new models would be amazing.
If you're new into this go wild, in fact there are some decent games made in XP. If you like the engine consider getting the other versions though. 2k3 goes on sale often and it's 2 bucks. If you want something modern MV or MZ will do, depending on your budget
Considering I haven't finished my own first project in MV, I don't see the point of starting in other RPGmaker...
I have XP, 2k and 2k3 on Steam and MZ.
>pirated MZ >can't run most plugin demos as the pirated version is apparently fairly old and demos require updated MZ
anyone know a better source than steamrip?
I'll likely get bored of it long before i finish making any game
maybe so, but for certain the Japanese wouldnt dare to use pirated copies, mainly because the games made CAN be sold for profit, and its not like the Maker series software of old were expensive or the like.
if theres a faction of people who used pirated versions of the maker software to make their shit, it would be basically every single soul outside japan, and no one would have sold their games because A) they wouldnt dare to risk persecution and B) they didnt knew they could sell their shit.
I want to make a game like the Lufia 2 ancient cave (so, sort of roguelike but with turn based jrpg battles).
Is this even a genre outside of that one example and the ff5 hack?
Mystery dungeon type games are fun, but idk, I like the more old jrpg type battles.
I want more actual jrpg type games made with this rather than artsy edgy stuff.
Been playing old SNES jrpgs and there's really something satisfying in them compared to modern games with bullshit long plots and complex systems going on.
Although I'd like less spiky haired teen heroes, and less "healer girl" type characters.
Cute witches and big armoured dudes are cool.
The only games I remember playing that were made with this were Tales of the Drunken Paladin (which was fun) and Aveyond (which sucked, but I remember being game-starved at the time).
No the engine is literally babies first, sure the later ones do have coding support but there are thousands of premade scripts to download.
Even without them, you can make a lot of creative stuff with just the basic event system.
RPG Maker is not about coding inherently but instead about "eventing", creating things that internally use their own logic and stuff but work on pre-designed code, and then figuring out creative solutions with it. Like building blocks, really. XP onwards then inserted scripting stuff you CAN code with if you want to for practically rewriting entire game logic, but the building block setup is always there.
Generally there isn't really a "best" RPGM, it's more what you want to do. 2000 and 2003 are ancient shit, though they can be modded externally to expand their stuff, yet have the most raw old-school appeal to them. XP was a rough transitioning period to larger stuff and more of a hand-drawn emphasis, and VX/VXAce tried to marry the two concepts before MX/MZ tripled down beyond that with access towards phone games as well. XP is decent enough to get your bearings but it's probably one of the weakest of the makers.
Not him but VX Ace looks the most appealing out of the older ones looking at your post.
The only thing keeping me from just buying it is the Ruby integration as compared to the Javascript in the newer ones. If I do actually commit to a project and learn manual scripting at least with JS I'd have a marketable skill, I seriously doubt companies are looking for someone with experience in a decade old version of Ruby.
MV is pretty much just VXA but JS instead of ruby. Same features and UI. Biggest differences, MV doesn't support mp3s, midis or wavs, has mouse input for games unlike VXA, and best of all, MV is unstable, expect a lot of crashing.
i always had a dream about picking a random book from my shelf, read it and create a RPGM based on it right afterwards working with nothing but my memory.
When I see the stuff in this thread that can be done with maniacs I'm reminded the 2channel autists managed to turn 2k3 into a platformer with minimal jank without maniacs (as far as I know)

>Mystery dungeon
No wonder it looked so familiar. Time to go study how to properly do this.
technically still turn-based, just in a different way
Shiren the wanderer clone, I agree though. I love those games and would much rather use that shit than the default RPGmaker "gameplay"
>What is this kind of gameplay called? Where your actions update everything else. I like this and want to learn how to make this kind of game. Frick the normal RPG maker combat.
Play Jupiter Hell.
STB (Simultaneous/Synchronous turn based)
All entities move at the same time
Most japanese games that use it have "fuushigi dungeon" somewhere in the title
Roguelike
how come theres no fricking mystery dungeon plugin for RPG MAKER
Because you haven't made it yet.
This is really cool. I wonder how much you can customize this? Always wanted to make a mystery dungeon game.
>2k3
SOVL
What's that mystery dungeon like called? May dig up RM2K3 again to mess with it.
see
the EN version has a direct download if you click DL (EN)
Cool, I will have to open this up in the editor and see what sorcery they did.
can compiled games be editable?
i wanted to see the source behind the smash clone, but it doesnt open on the editor.
This is giving me flashbacks to playing shiren on the ds. Does it have an ultimate challenge dungeon like fay's final puzzle?
xp is actually worse than mv believe it or not lmao
Why is it bad? I'm still getting it because it's free, but it would be nice to know.
It was a huge step down from 2k3 in every way except for having an extremely high quality set of default map graphics.
Nobody asked for or wanted RPG Maker to have Ruby scripting - they wanted the default editor/event code to have greater capabilities. People (mostly insane Japanese devs) were already making things in 2k/3 which were beyond the scope of the engine, and instead of opening up the floodgates, they said
>learn to code in a real language
when good 2k/3 devs were literally using the base editors' eventing systems as something of an assembly language.
In any case, few people ever made great games in XP. People are still, to this day, making awesome shit in 2k and 2k3.
https://files.catbox.moe/wagwcz.webm
All those games are made with the 2003 program? Is there anything else they use alongside it to achieve things like that driving section?
The first 5 webms are made with 2k3 and the Maniacs Patch, which drastically enhances the default editor's capabilities, adding in important features like String Variables and the ability to display arbitrary strings of text as images on screen, and MUCH more.
https://bingshan1024.github.io/steam2003_maniacs/
The rest were made in bone stock RPG Maker 2k.
Thanks.
Google says this patch .rar is "dangerous"
What are the names of these? They look fun
Name?
公道アレックス (Koudou Alex)
https://w.atwiki.jp/vip_rpg/pages/836.html
Name of the game in the 4th video?
https://tokyohuskarl.itch.io/dis-legacy
The people who made these games didn't need to use RPGMaker to make them. This is just showing off their own skills. What engine is used is irrelevant.
Is there a completed base template for this I can use? If anyone knows please tell me the name and where
Anon, all RPG Maker 2k/3 (and effectively later) projects can be considered "open source" since you can open any project in its respective editor and view the event code raw. Whether you can make any sense of it and reverse engineer it for your own needs is up to you.
https://w.atwiki.jp/vip_rpg/pages/702.html
How is it so smooth
Very cool, but why use (heavily edited) RPG Maker to make these? At that point, it provides no value.
All cope from people who were never going to make anything anyway.
It doesn't matter what engine you use or how you make it. Make a good, fun game? I'll play it. It's that easy.
But will you buy it? I can't pay my bills on your "fun"
I use Monogame because I like all code, no engine. My question of "why use RPG Maker to make this kind of game" is valid.
supposing I do know how to code, which would be preferable? Or which RPGMaker should I use period
Is 2k3 still king because it has all the assets?
(E.g. I want to write some code to just automatically replace all tiles in an area based on some logic, rather than clicking my way through it)
> .trans 0
Cool. Used to play with RM2K and 2k3 a lot. Pretty neat learning ITT that people still use 2k3 20 years later.
to be fair people mainly only use XP to make pokemon fangames and it does a pretty good job at that.
counterpoint: with ruby support you have FFI meaning you can actually do anything as opposed to hacking stuff on top of the even system
not sure if the newer JS versions have FFI but that's huge
there was a french plugin suite that amoungst other things liberated all the ruby code from the default editor and added proper DX11 swapchain support so it wasn't stuck in a tiny window
>XP
have a nice day
Cool anon what are you gonna make?
Which version of RPG maker is the best anyway? MV? 2003?
mv but 2003 has more soul
2000 or 2003? they are all on sales
2003
see
for reasons why.
2k is still fun to tool around in, and if you can't into custom battle systems and hate 2k3's, it may still be worth having 2k just because, but it's utterly BTFO by 2k3+the Maniacs Patch nowadays.
Cool time to make a porn game
Isn't XP only good for Pokemon clones?
Yup, and even then Essentials is a bloated unoptimized mess because of how desperately it's trying to convert the engine into a Pokemon engine.
>Yup, and even then Essentials is a bloated unoptimized mess
They recently fixed the performance for this. I used to get like 20 fps with screen tear, now it's 144+ with no screen tearing.
>Free
So what's your excuse for not making a game right now anon?
rpg maker games are doodoo
my excuse for not making unity games is I don't have any grand ideas, I had ideas when I was young and inept but now that I know how to make things I have none
dumbass, you don't need grand ideas for video games. you just need to make a game with one or two really good main mechanics then go from there
It's just that you grew up and realised all your ideas are cringe. Same.
Busy with other projects, but I yoinked it. Maybe I'll try someday, but I think 3d games interest me more.
I'm making a game right now.
is it shit?
i would like to make a pokemon style project, not 'game' per se, but something like a sandbox for my 'mons' and game ideas, prolly with almost no story... but its annoying that theres no way to get multiplayer.
get essentials
XP isn't all trash, I think it does enable a lot of freedom with the scripting. But it's also clunky as hell and cannot run past 40 fps. It's as outdated as 2000. and like it's name says, ti was only a good fit for Windows XP.
2003 might be old, but it got a lot of support, so it can still be used well to this day. Though it might not be as a good as some of the most recent version... I never tested them so I can't talk about those
what's the best tool for an ideas guy to make an action RPG. Not sure if it should be 2D or 3D yet.
keep in mind im moronic
>what's the best tool for an ideas guy to make an action RPG
pencil and paper
dungeon masters handbook and DM screen
some dice
5 friends around a table
>Trying to look smart
>Describes a turn based rpg
How am I supposed to know which rpg maker is most recent from looking at the names?
MZ is the most recent but also the most costly.
Free to keep
MZ > MV > VXAce > XP > 2K3 > 2K, that's from newest to oldest.
Things to note, some versions have much less support.
I'd say in term of support and users it's : 2003 > MV > MZ > 2000 > XP >>>>>>> VXace
i was about to say you're wrong but then realized
vxace is so old at this point that most of the support and resources for it have 404'd (though same applies for xp and 2k3 too but at least 2k3 has maniac, charas and a frickload of unprotected old games you can copy paste assets from)
2k3 despite it's age is still the most used version from what i know, at least with gaming enthusiast
if you're not familiar with the evolution of rpgm scenes throughout the late early 10's vxace was by far the biggest one until MV's release.
Is MV really that good? Just picked it up
Free as in to keep, or free as in trial?
RPG maker if used in an original way shouldn't be slept on. LISA the painful was using it. Same as that school shooting game with the cute girl.
But you gotta be original with it.
Link?
>it even got translated to english
by someone who didn't even give enough of a frick to make sure that the text doesn't run off the screen. literally the very first text boxes of the game can't be read in their entirety because the "fan" responsible for this wasn't enough of a "fan" to do bare basic QA on their garbage MTL.
holy frick, I hate MTL troonslators.
Link me the JP version or give me the complete name so I might find it senpai
真・女神転生VX
arigatouni
>Base font
Why? It looks so bad compared to the crunchy sprites
This, don't blame the tools. Blame the developer.
Both games are garbage though?
time to make my dream netorare kino
Slit your throat cuckgay
I'm getting those for my future kid. I love making games and it's my current job, but I wish I had played with RPG maker much earlier instead of using only the warcraft 3 editor for years
all of them were free back in the day
I remember
Sometimes I wonder what Don Miguel up to these days
Hes making a beat em up indie game
yeah but you wouldnt be able to legally release anything
my homie
If you want to feel old, compare the key art of each version of RPG maker and see how style changed over the years
Thanks for the heads up OP, I'll grab 2003.
How is pixel game maker mv?
I'v been using RPG Maker MV to mess with a database to suit combat in an rpg i want to make.
What would you pay for an rpg maker 2024 made by me, as a competing product?
Is there a point of using RPG Maker when I got Gamemaker? 2k3 is at pretty great discount, so I'm asking.
EasyRPG is an open source interpreter of 2k and 2k3 games, so people can play those on basically anything they want.
That's quite a plus.
I do worry about the amount of work needed to make anything besides typical JRPG.
in that case don't bother, maniac patch shills will tell you you can make a mmofpsrhythmgta6ofmightandscarletdevil with 2k3 but it's absolutely impractical to use rpgm for anything other than basic dq/ff jrpgs, horror/surreal walking sims and vns
Sounds like you got filtered.
i never said it wasn't possible to do so, yet you still felt the need to get offended by facts
also
>post your work
>post your work
OK. I'll post my eternally unfinished dungeon slop.
>eternally unfinished
Filtered.
Etrian odyssey inspired?
Etrianally unfinished....you mean =^)
Yeah. Basically. There's a chance I'll have more motivation for working on it once I'm done with refactoring it to make the custom systems work more harmoniously with the info from the default database, but there's also a chance I'll feel less motivated to actually
>make game
I see.
I hope the Chinese won't ruin it or at least let me have my older versions in peace.
Messing around with this is actually pretty neat. Kinda gets my autism tingling.
I pirated it and the other versions ages ago.
Best way to get to the content of porn games without having to grind through a bunch of stupid encounters.
>cheating to get subpar porn
you didn't fap to the CGs.
For me it was reading the words that made me cum.
Never liked XP. But i spent a frickload of time playing around with 2k and 2003. That was the golden age of RPG shit here.
Thanks for the intel anon, you're alright
I made an RPG using that one spic's translation back in like 2001 over a week. It was terrible. I used Cecil's dark knight sprites to rap and had Dr. Pepper be an ultimate healing item. Fricking kill me for remembering this.
That's literally nothing compared to some of the other cancer that has been made over the years
>had Dr. Pepper be an ultimate healing item
Based
I just see it as a product of its time in combination of being young
I had way worse, I remember being 11 or 12 and making one that had an optional thing where you "played" F-Zero (it was playback of random gameplay) and if you selected that you thought it sucked Captain Falcon would rev up a Falcon Punch and you had 5 minutes to get to another house in the village and get as far into their basement or bunker as you could to ensure safety and when you come out the town would've been destroyed if I had gotten that far.
>I just see it as a product of its time in combination of being young
i made an advance wars rpg when i was a 10 years old kid, you controlled a soldier unit but you could ride vehicles to cross terrain on the world map, and the fights were against other aw units
>mfw i lost it all to ransomware
That sounds really cool. I hope we get some Advance Wars clones made now that SRPG Gear MZ is out.
>had Dr. Pepper be an ultimate healing item
top kek
At least you didn't had your self insert MC date an in universe representation of your highschool crush.
Which version did LISA use?
VXA
I remember when Ganker played some awful lefty rpgmaker game called Uncommon Time. Those threads were fun.
>rpgmaker festival
Sounds very odd considering how fricking j-.. greedy those frickers are.
Let me guess, a new version of RPGMaker is coming out soon?
why do rightoids make up conspiracies theories about everything
he's right though, there's a new software on the way. ja- , greedy bastards gonna greed.
>conspiracies theories
homie i've been following rpgmaker since fricking 2000.
Those frickers always sell their shit at absolutely goddamn moronic prices despite the huge competition there is on the market, just because they have an userbase equally as moronic willing to buy.
let me guess you also call yanfly a israelite
Plugins and yanfly did more damage to RPG Maker's users than anything.
Instead of having to learn how to make stuff yourself, you can now pay for plugins that probably still won't do what you want them to do and walk away more frustrated than before.
2k and 2k3 force you to get good. Even if you were to copy paste event code from someone else, you'd have no choice but to figure out how it works and how to apply it to your own projects. Chances are you'd wind up re-eventing the whole thing anyway since RPGM stuff tends to be geared for just one specific project.
You've never used RPG Maker OR written in any assembly language. You think this sounds ridiculous, but think again.
Just as an example, in the 6502 assembly(which the NES uses) you can write:
>COMPARE
> LDA $10
> CMP $20
> BEQ EQUAL
> ADC $01
> JMP COMPARE
>EQUAL
> STA $30
Which is the RPGM equivalent of:
>Label: 1
>Control Variables: V[01] = 16
>Conditional Branch: V[01] == 32
Variables: V[48] = V[01]
>Else
Variables: V[01] += 1
>>Jump to Label: 1
>End
tl;dr you're a moron.
Good news, anon. It's been done before, and it's now easier to do than it's ever been.
Why not just write the game in C at this point...
Because then you'd lose out on EasyRPG support (assuming EasyRPG supports Maniacs)
>Plugins and yanfly did more damage to RPG Maker's users than anything.
I've definitely fallen into the trap of premade plugins. Now I'm coding a battle system from scratch by myself.
sorry were there not enough words there for you to realize it was a joke?
i only made comfy forest maps in rpgmaker
i was never competent enough to make games
Make me a forest map, forest map maker.
i have deleted most of my maps ive made but heres one that i could find
i really love the challenge of making something elaborate using the default assets
when i tested this map, all the "walkable" layers are all messed up because i didnt really understood how it works
i know the more skilled map guys just draw placeholder tiles first then paint over them when its all done
Excuses make more forest maps, forest map maker
heres a city themed map i also worked on
i wanted to add more roofs and the tree tops just behind the walls to add more detail but the layer limit makes it a bit more challenging
Why not merg a layer?
you cant
theres no option to
you will have to manually combine a specific tile combinations using a 3rd party art program
if i was going to learn how to do that, then i might as well force myself to go deep into pixel art and i cant really be bothered
Anon just use gimp it's free. eh whatever
Same. My sister watched me play and she told me to stop playing that game about planting trees and farming. She BTFO me without even knowing.
Doesn't RPGMaker make money off monetizing assets and scripts anyways?
I've always wanted to make an Ace Attorney-like in RPG maker, but I'm completely moronic when it comes to coding and could never figure out how to make stuff work.
I want MZ though
>I want MZ though
why? is MZ better than MV?
The only relevant thing that MZ adds is move route previews (haven't ever used MZ so knowing rpgm it's not even reliable)
Also, the new animation editor allows for 3d particle effects to be used instead of only 2d spritesheets, but it's a bit more of a hassle.
it is practically the same but with some fixes, so yes
In any cases.
It's free as freedom so I'm getting XP.
>about to get it for free
>check the festival page
>WE ARE GIVING XP FOR FREE
>all versions are linked in the page
>EXCEPT fricking XP
Jesus Fricking Christ... Greedy until the very end.
Change your compatibility settings for high DPI or change the scaling to 100%
It's not a problem, I run a lower res at the moment because I'm doing some gpu frickery. I just found this message funny.
XP is like the worst one. No reason to ever open it it when 2003, VX Ace and MV exists.
Disagree. If you know how the studio works, owning XP is a legal way for you to use their assets. And for free
>"All RTP assets may only be used within RPG Maker products."
yeah not enough people port the RTPs between games. would love to see more MV and MZ games using VX and XP assets.
I have VX Ace already, is there any reason to pick this up?
>free
So what? If I have something better, it's steam library clutter.
oh, no... not the digital clutter!
Literally yes. It has become a problem.
>it's still free
>just organize your games into categories you idiot
So which RPGmaker version is good for apes like me?
None just unironically use gamemaker if you want to do 2D games with almost no coding.
Heck, even modern engines like Unity and UE are slowly starting to get blueprints, aka make-a-game-without-coding.
Isn't Gamemaker much more robust than RPGmaker though? it would be like using a chainsaw to open an envelope
Read the thread, there's pros and cons to each.
I was on the free trial of mv so getting it for 12 bucks was a nice suprise today lmao, makimg a fishing game in rpgmaker is fun so far
What kind of H-game are you going to make Ganker?
Okay guys, I understand why XP is shit, but why use 2003 instead of MV? What is Maniac patch?
maniac patch removes a frickton of limitations from rm2k3 you can basically do anything with it, it'll just be way more tedious than using gamemaker/godot/unity etc, rm2k3 uses 16bit graphics and has the largest amount of free assets available (most of it stolen)
MV is modern, uses javascript, easier to use, but it will be way harder to make your game not feel like RPGMakerslop if that's something someone is concerned about (most likely not you)
so really if you want SOULful 16bit old school 90's aesthetics then go for rm2k3 everytime
which one is the actually best version for beginners?
I'm a software engineer, but I'm lazy as frick and I just want to make something quick and dirty. What's the best route? Writing Ruby or Javascript isn't a dealbreaker at all.
Download Unity and buy a game template from asset store.
>Unity
is rpg maker unite any good
Who the frick knows. People mostly use MV.
it being 3d is interesting
Has that actually released yet?
bro your thread reading skills?
your google-fu?
Those games can be really short too.
i've always wanted to make a game but i have no creativity. i keep staring at my screen not knowing what to do with it.
I've always wanted to make a game and I'm creative but as soon as I open RPG Maker I just lose all motivation
>can imagine, write notes, and build up my story and characters in my head for weeks/months
>even draw pixel art and write scripts for scenes and draw layouts for towns and dungeons
>open RPG maker
>close RPG maker
feels bad man
idea guy syndrome
Anyone try RPG Architect?
I don't understand all the different version of rpgmaker
what is there not to understand? every couple years there was a new version. that's it.
MV has official GNU/Linux support.
I use Arch btw.
If I use XP or 2003/MV do I need to know how to code?
I'm a moron and have this dumb idea where you can collect unique people and they all have these cool super moves that's just a full screen art pan.
Holy shit the amount of AI generated posts in this thread
actual schizo
Why would I use the ancient version of RPGM that requires a billion scripts to fix when MKV or PixelMaker MV or whatever is out
is free
All software is free.
if you're talking about XP, yeah there's no reason to use it in 2024
there's also no reason to buy/legally obtain any rpg maker until you're at the point where you're going to release a fully completed project
2k3 is the easiest one to obtain for free and also the best one for actually getting good at developing a project
How do I learn to use 2k3? I know my art shit and I want to do simple stuff to brute force game design shit into my brain
But you'll only find those problems if you start making stuff.
forgot /vrpg/ even existed
Go hang with the regular jammers if you want to learn their secrets and git gud. Picrel is a small taste of some of the stuff that happens over there, and most of them use 2k3. Just avoid the non-jam threads, as a schizo taking refuge from the RPGM forums has started advertising/being obnoxious and shitting up the threads.
Top right with the crabs? Sauce please
https://goburinbro.itch.io/sister-moshimo-imouto
Any RpgMaker FES users here?
No custom assets
No scripting
Just you, the default assets, an horribly tedious map editor, and an event system even more restricted than rm95 that could crash without notice anytime during edition
It was the purest form of RPGmaker and the games people managed to wrench out of it were soulful
why would you do this to yourself
Because it's fun
how about rpgmaker ps1
rpgmaker 3
Can I make a suikoden clone or something similar to early ps1 rpgs?
maybe
Maybe?
3 bucks for 2k3 seems kind of suspicious when everything newer than it has 98 billion dollars worth of asset packs.
This thread inspired me to return to my yume nikki fangame. Bless you fellas and good luck with your projects
Good luck anoncito.
Tried downloading that Maniacs Patch and Firefox gave me a warning put it through Virus Total and that shit have like 42 different results with keyloggers and trojan shit.
post the scan
moron, that's false positives
Jesus burn it with fire. If you're dumb enough to run this shit then at least backup all your files to an external hard drive first.
>If you're dumb enough to run this shit
See this exhibit
I get it, but I tried to Instal cracked illustrator once, seemingly all false positives untill I checked changes in the registry
It seems it made it so any time I'd copy cryptowallet directions it would replaced it with an specific one, dunnno why, but it did.
Most likely false positive but still this isn't something I'd trust. Just run it into a VM or a burner PC
Feels like old internet
False positives.
Entertainingly, there was a time years ago when even Enterbrain themselves had to complain to virus scan companies because the official EN releases of 2k and 2k3 were hacked to high hell and back to include certain new features, and were throwing false positives from the default 2k/2k3 launchers and dlls.
Obviously don't run it if you don't trust it.
Is MZ caught up to MV in terms of plugins and community support?
QUICK WHAT'S THE BEST NON-MODERN-ENGINE RPGMAKER GAME?
nobody's downloading you're malware stop trying

xp is pretty good. my go-to for quick, simple games
Do any of these actually let me use a programming language or are they all used purely through their UI?
read, Black person.
read thread
XP was the first to use RUBY if I remember right, its own programming language, and then each new version past that expanded and reworked, swapped, etc. It's mainly 2k/3 that still have a lack of programming, and through outside measures people figured workarounds for that anyway.
You're still gonna probably use the UI for eventing, placement and setup obviously.
2003 Maniacs is pure visual but it has lots of opportunities for scripting
VX uses Ruby, MV/MZ use Javascript
No rason to use RPG maker even less so VX (the worst) when there is Fire Emblem Romhack editors, when there is custom maps and civilizations in Civilization games or whatever. RPG maker is trash.
>No rason to use RPG maker even less so VX (the worst) when there is Fire Emblem Romhack editors, when there is custom maps and civilizations in Civilization games or whatever.
good luck trying to sell romhacks
Is there a market for RPGM games nowadays? Specially the old ones
I dunno if there's a market for like, RPGM as a whole, but individual games still crop up here or there that are surprise successes. Omori was RPG Maker for one example. And a 2k3-ass game is out there that's even on the goddamn PS/Xbox store.
Yes?
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/39252092/sale/RPGMaker2024?tab=3
Niche market, but some of that stuff has sold "decent" for an RPG maker title.
why would you sell RPG maker slop I wont buy it
i bet game devs are really sad to hear that a Gankerner won't buy their game, whatever shall they do... dumb Black person
just start a patreon and include porn scenes.
just grabbed it, thanks for making a thread on this.
Looks shit. I'm learning GameMaker instead.
Recommend me some good normal jrpg games made in rpgm.
there aren't any, it's all pretentious 2deep4u edgelord deviantart teenangst garbage. just play hgames like black souls or sequel instead
I like Your Turn To Die.

Enchant Farm.

have a nice day for shilling this garbage.

I love that shit, thanks for the recommendation
Helen's Mysterious Castle
OFF
Ara Fell
Standstill Girl
Liar Jeannie in Crucifix Kingdom
ib and thats it. They all suck.
Tales of the Drunken Paladin.
It's also quite massive and got several updated versions with big additions.
However, if you don't like jokes, you won't like the game.
Reminds me how as a teen I made some RPG Maker version with pics of my friend in it. Not much came from it, but I still hay it laying around on one of my archival HDDs. lol
>Tales of the Drunken Paladin.
I remember playing that one. Can't remember much details other than the funny shit going between the protagonist, the priest and the save hobo.
I remember I got to some point with a "strong female character" (not the witch), not sure if it was supposed to be ironic (probably was) but still felt unfunny and dropped it.
i shill erry time
Ara Fell
Though I guess it would be a pain (and not worth it) to find the original version of the game made in 2k3. The dev updated everything in Unity like 10 years after its original release. Still has some traces of RPGM RTP though, and definitely the UI.

LISA is normal
>asks for normal ->JRPG<- games

yeah, LISA is normal
and?
you said all of those games were schizo trash but when I pointed out that one wasn't, you instead brought up the genres of the games, as if those were relevant to the conversation
LISA is schizo depression garbage though. You pointed out incorrectly.
It isn't "schizo", nor is it about depression. The game is about Brad's regrets and his descent into madness. That latter aspect does not magically make the game "schizo". Neither definitions of the word "schizophrenic", be it psychiatric or general, align with what Lisa actually is.
It represents all the stereotypical crap people think of when they think of RPG Maker.
Does this look happy or normal to you? Because it looks off-putting and crude to me.
atleast it's a rpg (still not a jrpg which is what the original post asked for)
>This game is really shit
>No, I haven't played it
Ganker - Video Games
He asked for normal RPGs, not happy RPGs you moronic frick.
LISA the Painful is a "normal" RPG. LISA didn't invent violence or psychological themes, if that somehow prevents something from being a "normal RPG" then fricking Xenogears isn't a normal RPG.
Xenogears isn't a normal RPG. It's a sci fi novel that has half a game attached to the front.
>el topo
There's so much fricking similarities between lisa and this movie I'm surprised nobody calls lisa an el topo ripoff
he asked for normal jrpgs not normal rpgs
What is it then?
It's a game made in RPG maker, it's hard to make something that isn't either a JRPG, walking simulator, or visual novel with it. It's textbook JRPG gameplay.
if you're talking about lisa, i never said it couldn't be considered a jrpg, just corrected you when you said he asked for normal rpgs omitting the j for some reason
JRPGs aren't gross and disgusting for one.
Okay moron.
>meanwhile JRPGs 35 years ago
the anon that called them schizo trash wasn't me, also the list is still moronic
How is MZ? Since it allows 16x16 tiles, would it work as a modern alternative to 2k0/2k3 for the soulful 240p look?
>tfw can't draw
>no one will play your game if it has no custom assets
It's OVER
Just do a space funeral and make it look weird and shitty if you can't make something unironically appealing.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.
Rance I has frick tons of developer arts back in 1989.

i'd rather use AI then pay an a*tist
just go the route of embracing your lack of drawing ability
Has anybody ever made one of these about the israelites?
Hamas made a game but its a shooter, its really bad, like moronicly bad you run fast as frick and you kill the IDF soldiers infinitely on a base it never ends you have to find ammo as you run out of ammo in the arena it all respaws in the same spots.
When the frick is the Unity RPG Maker coming out
It's been out for a while
Jesus. Did they seriously frick up not just MZ but Unite as well?
Frick, I am been using MV for years now and nothing better comes out.
what the frick is unite
unite deez nuts in your mouth lmao
>verification not required
imagine Unity, except gutted and redesigned to operate like RPG Maker setup and UI. it's technically the first truly HD thing, but it's also kind of a fricking mess.
>Notice: RPG MAKER UNITE is no longer available on the Steam store.
Wow, they nuked the entire depot from the store. How the frick did they frick that up? Was Unity's frick up what screwed them over?
from what I heard, it was pretty bad
So how do community made patches/tilesets/spritesheets/plugins/etc. work in regards to releasing your game? I'm mainly thinking about 2003 but as a whole I can't imagine it being easy including modified dlls and executables with a licensed engine.
>Not MZ before Unity.
I don't care, Interbrain. Lower the price of the "latest" version or frick off, man.
Does anyone happen to have a download link for the MV DLC tiles? I think I have most of them but I just found out theres a japanese city one that looks pretty good.
My problem with RPGMaker is either you make some terrible soulless shit or go through so many scripts, loops and hoops to make something good that at that point you're just flexing for using RPGMaker instead of an actual engine.
unironically all you need is good writing.
the problem is that if you were a good writer, you'd be employed, not making rpg maker games.
>the problem is that if you were a good writer, you'd be employed
where?
Majestic 12
My employer was so willing it was almost pathetic
Writing/story oriented RPGM games are seriously overrated.
If the gameplay isn't good, I'm not going to bother with the game. It's that simple. I'll sit through the most dogshit story you can imagine as long as the game is fun to play, but I won't tolerate the opposite.
Name ONE(1) successful rpgm game with a bad story but good gameplay.
by default the gameplay is as good as snes final fantasy games. you don't need anything else from the gameplay point of view.
I dont even think the story in that is good but it fricking blew up anyway.
even with good writing I don't know how I'd convince someone to play my rinkydink autismgame
Just check websites like Itch.io, theres all types of games there and they all get played by people with nothing better to do. Post links for the game in every website you can find and someone is bound to try the game, and if its good enough then it will be shared around automatically.
>XP
I mean, I'll take it, but I'm never going to use it.
Is there a way to keep track of when Steam is giving shit away like this? I usually only find out if there's a Ganker thread about it
Make a dicksword server and put a giveaway announcer bot in it.
What
said or follow Wario64.
Use RPG Maker 2000
Is this the game you had to do bad ending first to unlock good ending?
Yes. The creator has a e-girl rape fetish.
>Cute artstyle
>Nautical theming
>Great character designs
>e-girl rape
Of fricking course it has e-girl rape, why did I expect a normal game.
In the game's defense, the darker moments contrast nicely with the rest of the story. It's still an enjoyable ride.
Is there any reason to use 2k over 2k3 aside from the battle system? I've read around that 2k is just a downgrade
2k's default battle system is superior to 2k3. That's about it.
Official, bone-stock Steam 2k3 has all kinds of things that make it easier to use than 2k such as
>spritesheeting for the Show Picture command
>variable designation & indirect designation for picture layers
>superior Move Picture command options
>support for more keys in the Key Input Processing command
>additional event commands for battle use
How do I write good?
tfw had an idea for 2 rpg maker games and the second one especially was some batshit insane schizokino and I completely forgot what they were about, the idea for the second aligned with me reading the prince of nothing, letting what I read brew on my head for some months and then going on /misc/ and learning some interesting stuff from redpill threads. The final battle was going to be done using good memes to fight against the negative thoughtform demons and their anti-life propaganda
you can finally make it
How do you make 2003 have regular turn based fights, I hate ATB
you use 2000 instead
thanks, anon. Now to make my own ShotaXMonsters.
Just pirate a newer version.
Better yet, git gud and learn a proper engine like Unity or Unreal.
why were the rpgm releases so incompetently built
why didnt they come native with a fullscreen window option before rpgm mv
why cant they utilize more than 1 cpu core
why is opening a menu a super power you need 3rd party hack to accomplish
Results are everything.
why do you Black folk think anyone cares ?
I use rpgmaker because I'm not autistic enough to code and just want a vessel to tell my story's and put my music into.

RPGMaker is a waste of time. It's fair more beneficial to learn to code.
Anyone else have ridiculous hours in pic related?
Nah it was too slow without keyboard support
I was able to make dating sim RPGs with enough patience back in early 2000s middle school
Got some hours in the 3DS one cause it had an online sharing site you could post your games to
Made lots of little short story type games, shame it'll all be gone when 3DS online goes breasts up in a month or two
I'm waiting for the day they put rpg maker 2 on pc so I can make a 3d rpg game without having to using the other engines
never happening with the "unity" one being a huge flop
What are the best websites for 2k3 resources?
I knew a really good one 15 years ago
https://refmap-l.blog.jp/archives/cat_202341.html
Back in the day REFMAP graphics were quite popular
What's the difference between MV and MZ? The most common complaint I see is about MZ being too expensive for offering little improvement over MV, but assuming I don't care about cost, is there some pitfall I should be wary of with MZ?
Not really, MZ is MV with QoL improvements. If you care about plugins, MV has more since it's older. I recommend MZ if you're starting out.
Get MZ
what is wrong with XP ?
nothing wrong with it if you just want to mess around the engine and make some games for fun
but compared to the newer versions it is quite outdated in terms of features and ease of use
Can we make an ARPG maker now pls

What happened?
steve jobs died of ligma
whos steve jobs?
Steve jobs in yo mouth, homie!
nah 2k3 was already on the decline
xp looks so shit
When is Ganker making a game?
When we can get good art for free
Make a good game for free first.
Every time I get the itch to make a game, trying to format images into it on a large scale as CGs at a not-abysmal resolution kills me. Apologies, but the 1.34tb Pokemon eroge is forever kill.
The only RPGmaker games I ever played a porn games so whenever I see/hear the stock sprites/sounds I get aroused.
I bought RPGmaker MV for like $26 on sale and I hated it and barely used it and when I tried to refund it steam told me to frick off because the refund window was already over, yep i'm a fricking idiot.
> I hated it
Because of the soulless sprite?
I hate MZ sprites more than MV.
I wanna make a shitty jokey story game (no combat or whatever) with dumb low effort graphics.
I cannot code for shit. Would MZ work better for me?
You might want to consider Adventure Game Studio as well. You can do a basic point and click almost entirely without touching the scripting system.
That's a good shout. I'll look into it, seems like more of what I'm after.
Just installed it. Got a trojan detection. Odd?
It was fine when I used it, though granted that was like 10 years ago.
When are we going to get the REAL RPG Maker?
Holy shit.. this is real. This is fricking awesome. Can't believe this was made during PS2 era.
too bad it's only on ps2
Yeah, is there really no PC version of this? Frick... what a missed opportunity. I actually love the PS2 era graphics but being able to make EXEs and share them or add new models would be amazing.
WTF? Is there any reason why we don't have a RPGM like this anymore?
Probably it was limiting and it quickly would up being boring.
It was garbage, but it still had some decent tracks in there for wandering around the maps you'd make.
Is that good or bad? I don't get it.
I wish there were more 4-directional walking textures available. Especially for monsters.
>RPGMAKER
The cancer of h-games.
Any good games using only default rpgmaker assets?
hero's realm for a proper, real jrpg-scale game done with only the terrible default rm2k3 tileset (charsets and monsters etc aren't rtp though)
Ive never touched RPG maker is XP a good start to get the basics even if it sucks otherwise compared to other versions?
If you're new into this go wild, in fact there are some decent games made in XP. If you like the engine consider getting the other versions though. 2k3 goes on sale often and it's 2 bucks. If you want something modern MV or MZ will do, depending on your budget
Considering I haven't finished my own first project in MV, I don't see the point of starting in other RPGmaker...
I have XP, 2k and 2k3 on Steam and MZ.
I haven't used XP in years, I always preferred 2k3.
Reminder that the only good thing about RPG Maker is the premade graphics, and those have gotten progressively worse over the years
What are some good RPG Maker games that aren't well known? and free.
Did japs actually pay $100 for this back in the day or did they just pirate it like the western community?

Making a fishing game is fun in MV
easyrpg player with some form of video playback when
>pirated MZ
>can't run most plugin demos as the pirated version is apparently fairly old and demos require updated MZ
anyone know a better source than steamrip?
I'll likely get bored of it long before i finish making any game
https://rpgmakerunion.ru
Thanks!
The site doesn't work when I translate it
Why would you ever translate it?
>Why would you ever translate it?
What type of moronic question is that? I CAN READ RUSSIAN!
>I CAN READ RUSSIAN!
Then do it? Dumb dunce.
It works for me
can someone explain the naming schemes of mv/mz
are there any guides on game balance/design
how do I get rid of the black patches after I place an object??
If I pirate RPG Maker, and make a game. How would anyone find out I used a pirated copy?
there is no way to know, it wouldn't be surprising if a lot of big rpgm games were made with a pirated copy
maybe so, but for certain the Japanese wouldnt dare to use pirated copies, mainly because the games made CAN be sold for profit, and its not like the Maker series software of old were expensive or the like.
if theres a faction of people who used pirated versions of the maker software to make their shit, it would be basically every single soul outside japan, and no one would have sold their games because A) they wouldnt dare to risk persecution and B) they didnt knew they could sell their shit.
I want to make a game like the Lufia 2 ancient cave (so, sort of roguelike but with turn based jrpg battles).
Is this even a genre outside of that one example and the ff5 hack?
Mystery dungeon type games are fun, but idk, I like the more old jrpg type battles.
found some old shit i made years ago
I want more actual jrpg type games made with this rather than artsy edgy stuff.
Been playing old SNES jrpgs and there's really something satisfying in them compared to modern games with bullshit long plots and complex systems going on.
Although I'd like less spiky haired teen heroes, and less "healer girl" type characters.
Cute witches and big armoured dudes are cool.
Alright, I have an idea and I'm going to buy 2003.
What are some tilesets or plugins I should be looking at?
The only games I remember playing that were made with this were Tales of the Drunken Paladin (which was fun) and Aveyond (which sucked, but I remember being game-starved at the time).
Huh nevermind, Tales of the Drunken Paladin wasn't made in xp
for RPGMaker in general do you need a lot of coding experience? which is the "best" one?
No the engine is literally babies first, sure the later ones do have coding support but there are thousands of premade scripts to download.
Even without them, you can make a lot of creative stuff with just the basic event system.
shit really? I thought you needed to know a little about java and other languages.
It's not 2003 anymore.
Biggest differences, MV doesn't support mp3s, midis or wavs, has mouse input for games unlike VXA, and best of all, MV is unstable, expect a lot of crashing.
>mouse input for games
2k3+Maniacs does this too.
yeah with extensive scripting (i assume), in which case XP and VX also support it
cool but why would you make this
Is "because you can" not a good enough answer for people nowadays?
If it's not at least VX Ace, you can frick off.
Any RPG maker game featuring a cute male cleric as either protagonist or party member?
Preferably stereotypical jrpg like.
Yeah
cute
i always had a dream about picking a random book from my shelf, read it and create a RPGM based on it right afterwards working with nothing but my memory.
Is this shit good for making a first person dungeon crawler?
When I see the stuff in this thread that can be done with maniacs I'm reminded the 2channel autists managed to turn 2k3 into a platformer with minimal jank without maniacs (as far as I know)
Yeah, very impressive. Shit that could be done in gDevelop by your mom they poured months of work into.
>webshit shill
Webshit is easily accessible on any platform. How is that a bad thing? 2D games don't need to be chained to some dusty-ass desktop.
Why do people tout 2003 around like it's the be all end all of RPG Maker? Most people just call it what it is: Outdated.
There has to be more documentation for maniacs than a jp twitter.
I got this because I can't code for shit please teach me
