AoE/AoM, Red Alert, Battle for the Middle Earth, Warcraft, Command and Conquer, Stronghold or Dawn of War were all popular before devs fricked the series up with subpar sequels (or just didn't make one despite the games being popular, like with BFME and Warcraft)
I fricking hate when clueless morons who don't even understand the genre's appeal are trying to push their meme how it's the fault of the RTS fans that the genre died. The genre was already far more complex and diverse with mechanics than most other genres are, but fans obviously won't like it when devs want to remove fun, key-mechanics of the genre like base building or resources gathering/economy management if the previous games in the series had them

Every RTS with multiplayer needs a "rebalance" control mechanic that chances time, resources and unit balancing, it should be like how League has the URF mode, so then you can separate the asiaticclickers from the slow paced strategy mode, it's literally that simple to fix the problem. Or maybe even make the Ultra moron homosexual mode be the official competitive mode so the asiatics are still incentivized to stay on it, but then have the singleplayer mode be balanced to be slow paced and have the ability to coop and custom pvp (that is not ladder), then there you have it, you have fixed the RTS discussion about meta forever.

RTS died because they couldn't take advantage of 3D graphics to evolve their genre into something new and exciting.
Compare Super Mario World with Super Mario 64.
Compare Link to the Past with Ocarina of Time.
Compare Grand Theft Auto with GTA3.
Now compare Starcraft with Warcraft III.
That's not to say RTS games became any worse, no. But they lost the race in dazzling the growing crowd of normie consumers.

I'd say competitive RTS players aside, as I can't understand autists, RTS games were popular because most people(kids) didn't know better.
As internet has become more popular as well as gaming you had more games that appealed to specific part you enjoyed whether it's building cities/civilizations, fighting battles with large armies or more political stuff like CK.
RTS was just at the right place in the right time, just like Point & Click adventures or arena shooters and there wasn't competition.
So if you want to fight realistic looking battles, wouldn't you rather play Total War? You want story focused game, why play P&C games with usually shitty puzzles and no actual gameplay flow? Why would you play over and over same few maps in Quake in game that has only its mechanics going for it, when you can play more "realistic" shooters, whether modern, WW2 or WW1.
There is nowhere to actually evolve these genres, just adding gimmicks.
