CoD peaked bettwen CoD4 and MW2. In some virtual unreleased game. MW2 had improvements over CoD4 but also things going downhill that eventually ruined series.
I played through a few Cowadooty games recently and I'll have to say, CoD1 has the best gameplay. It's frantic, headshots actually matter and levels are just long enough, you don't get shooting fatigue like in CoD2 and you don't run into constant cutscenes like in Black Ops.
Speaking of, that game wasn't as good as I remember it being. The combat is actual wank and the setting has so much anachronistic shit that it takes away from the game.
Blops 2 was better, but the story wasn't nearly as good despite the cool choice and consequence elements.

I liked the campaign too, but you could tell from the multiplayer that the series was past it's peak and it was only downhill from there.

With you on that, the biggest turnoff about BF3 were the weapons, they just didn't feel meaty like they did in BC2.
This game was terrible because half of every team just sat at the back sniping.
But the problem was way worse on the later games that reintroduced going prone.
