My main issue with Monster Train is that it doesn't feel like runs vary that much in regards to enemies and random events (aside from the concealed cavern of course)
IMO Griftlands is okay, but the fact that each character's story is pretty linear despite a "roguelite" type of game can get pretty annoying if you don't want to re-read all of the dialogue.
Meanwhile you have a game like pic related. It wasn't bad - just kinda bland. It was obviously a Chinese-made game; whoever did the English dubbing voice direction needs a raise because the English VAs sound so run-of-the-mill and uninspiried that it's actually fricking hilarious.
Griftlands was neat, but fricked itself wanting to be storybased and a roguelike. You play each character like twice and then you're done with the game, with a whole stack of cards you never unlocked because it's all gated.
Not like it wasn't fun while it lasted though. I especially liked playing the double agent. 'How ruthless are you willing to be' is a simple, but great story beat.
It was fun for a while back then but at this point I've blacklisted deckbuilding off steam. M

How do you make a game so perfect without previous experience on deck builders or even roguelikes?
I sometimes wonder if everything was made on purpose, planned ahead of time accounting for every interaction, or if the solid foundations paired with luck just allowed for it to happen. I dont even think I could name 5 perfect games, yet StS would be the first one to come to my mind if I was asked that question
Most likely a combination of good ideas, luck and absolutely autistic amounts of testing and balancing. There is no way the game should be this well balanced with that many cards and relics.

IIRC, devs were big-shots in the Netrunner community. They studied card game design for quite a while.
I dont like the inconsistency of the relic, even if said inconsistency is how sometimes is good and sometimes amazing, also I mostly play miracle silent decks.
Now coffee dripper and astroblade, those are boss relics, instapick everytime.
>people here are still too fricking dumb to realise snecko is good because of the card draw and not having to get energy upgrades and not because it makes cards cheaper
Reminder that 95% of people ITT have not beaten A20 on every character and gotten every achievement
The literal bare minimum for being considered somewhat competent at this game
>Draw 7 cards >Can only play 2 of them because of shit rolls on energy costs
Yeah I’m going to go with anything that’s more consistent than that bullshit. Snecko and dead branch CAN be good but they both are a single RNG roll away from ending your run (Dead branch with corruption much less so but that’s one build on one character) >t.Maybe moronic
>start with Snecko meaning you can easily build around it >take high cost cards when offered them and avoid low cost ones to maximize the chance that Snecko is giving you a net benefit
also the extra cards in your hand let you draw through your deck faster and give you access to more options each turn even if you're not going to be playing everything, so it's still great for that reason too.
Very strong points. I want to get better at StS by taking relics and cards I’m uncomfortable with, is ironchad the best with snecko or can the other characters use it effectively?
one of the main things that makes Silent good is all the low cost and free cards (stuff like shivs) and Snecko doesn't synergize with that well. Silent also wants you to be playing a lot of cards in a turn and again Snecko makes this inconsistent. Defect has some really good high-cost power cards that benefit from Snecko.
It’s better to play 2-3 good cards than 5 garbage cards
You want to cycle through your deck faster to get back to important cards you’ve played
There are many ways to reduce cost with snecko
Bullet time, corruption, enlightenment, if it isn’t too expensive, and draw with snecko eye can be energy positive
And you can also get more energy through cards, relics, potions, and boss relics to help when you get a shit draw
Yeah it happens, but you can save potions for that exact purpose
It works great with hologram, it costs the same in the discard pile, it costs regular amounts from the draw pile
And it makes powerful 2-3-4-5 cost cards as expensive as less impactful 0-1 cost cards
It’s not like they are untakable either, snecko is about how good card effects are, not how much they cost, cards such as seek can still be good at 1-2 cost
Even if you don’t have any snecko cards as you get snecko at the end of act 2 it can be worth picking up a lot if the time, unless it’s incongruous with your relic or the specific thing your deck already does
Also has great synergies with necronomicon
Yeah, I don't like how annoying that character is to play. But on the other hand I feel like backpack hero is too easy, I literally haven't lost once since I started playing and I'm already at the end of the game.
Yeah coming from A20 spire, the broken synergies are too easy to spot and execute. The only struggling runs are those where the RNG gives you nothing to work with.
I like rogueshit but Backpack Hero's art is just so badly done and viscerally off putting to me I can't stand to look at it, not to mention it appears to be bugged up the ass.
Is Wildfrost good if I love Slay the spire?
I dont mind difficulty and all that, but I heard some anons that it sometimes feels unfair.
How does the replayability and balance compare to StS?
Not an expert but they patched the absolute bullshit difficulty it had at the start. Like every StS knock-off it adds lots of complexity on top and elegance is lost. I felt it's super charming and well made, but the content is absolutely anemic. You get the same five guys every run and like two of them are good, also stuff is really badly paced (chest opening anime take forever, imagine that in StS). First two combats take WAYYY too long for the guaranteed victories they are.
I don't blame Slay The Spire, I blame fricking Hearthstone for cursing us with this terrible artstyle that all indie devs are copying nowadays. Deck builder or not.
the runeterra singleplayer mode was inspired by this so yeah, its pretty good
I looks good, I usually don't buy games but I'm going to buy this one when it's on sale because I've heard that the workshop has a lot of cool things in it
the runeterra singleplayer mode was inspired by this so yeah, its pretty good
Now that you mention it, runaterra might be the best StS clone out there, tons of replayability and meta proression as well, not as balanced but almost as fun. Totally recommend it to anyone that wants a StS clone to play for hundreds of hours. Its also free to play, I havent touched the main game mode past the tutorial.
Yeah its been a while since I played it, probably there are a ton more champs by now, but I remember the spells cost 1 less upgrade being so fricking game breaking but fun as well.
The only fun thing about Downfall is Hermit, the mode is shit, I have beaten it
The bosses are shit, I have played them all >campfire at the start and not before the boss
Lovely being forced into 4 combats straight with no chance to upgrade or rest before every boss because random generation fricked you over
Love having to chase down the merchant before accessing the shop
Fighting the 4 characters was the only good part, but the fights could be really unbalanced
No because they are piss-easy guaranteed wins with modfiers that either break the game so bad it isn’t fun to win or add annoyances that are overcome, but not fun
i found slay the spire to be rather boring. i should like it but i dont. yeah you can have some cool combos and stuff but it feels all so formularic. enter the gungeon is a much better rogue like, with some insane combination of items, a way better art style and story, etc.
I just got Nitro Kid, mainly because I like some of the musical artists. I think it changed the genre enough to be distinguished from most other knockoffs, the problem is the lack luster UI.
Same. I thought it would be like a roguelite where the experience is different with each run and new upgrades feeling significant, but no. Felt like I was doing the same thing every single time.
Played some other ones with friends reluctantly, and what I hated the most was how slow the progression when it comes to upgrades. Like at some point you either hit a wall you can't surpass, or when you actually surpass it you get barely any rewards for it.
The deckbuilding aspect of Slay the Spire is the weakest part, but for some reason, it's the only part that copycats do NOTHING to improve upon. Frequent card offers but you stop taking cards less than halfway through the game because diluting your deck makes upgrades and removals worse and worse since they don't have any scaling to compensate.
The simplest thing that comes to mind is a gold rebate based on the rarity of a card when it's removed(through any means). Maybe a special case to not have it on cards that grant permanent bonuses, like Feed.
Don’t understand what you mean
You have to give a clearer example
The chance for rares increases for every card you remove? Temporarily? Permanently?
Removing cards is already strong, why buff it?
Rarity is no equivalent to use either, commons can be just as helpful, you don’t necessarily want to see higher rarities of cards
As in you get gold when you remove them, or they cost less to remove. In StS, this would make risky picks of synergy-dependent uncommons/rares more worth it because it's still possible to go back.
Could be interesting, certainly would try a mod of it, but you have to define “cost” better
You can remove 2 gold cards for the price of one? All the ways of removing cards currently have you remove 1 and 1 card, I find it hard to imagine how you can change the cost of removing cards without fundamentally changing several parts of STS
that kind of defeats the purpose of the almost the entire game
its all about decision making
making things less punishing for choosing something incorrectly is stupid
5 months ago
Anonymous
StS is already extremely punishing towards risky moves. Creating avenues aside from "pick the safest thing every time" doesn't reduce the decision making.
Name how it could be better while still being random and without giving an insane incentive to pick up cards or skip them, like singing bowl
I don't know if it's an improvement, but Wildfrost thins out the RNG of card offers. Any card you don't pick up from a loot reward or the shop will never show up in the run again.
That’s stupid because your deck changes
I got offered y but didn’t take it because it did nothing for my deck
But now that I have gotten x and z y is suddenly good y
Guess I can get fricked, should have taken the card that did nothing and hoped that it would work out
This is just frustrating design
And letting you pick cards for a larger array is just super OP, all the challenge taken out, deckbuilding for 5 year olds
The point of STS is that you can’t remove every card you want, that you can’t necessarily get every card you want, and that you don’t know what you are getting meaning you have to make it up as you go along and have to try to make it work
I don’t think there is a better way to build your deck, even if the current design can feel bad occasionally
That reminds me, another idea I had for deckbuilders was effects based on what you skip, either positive or negative. This prevents card offers from ever turning into noise because something happens no matter what.
I wish I was smoothbrained enough to not see that every deckbuilder has fixed, best solutions as a necessary consequence of design which reduces every strategy to “how do I most efficiently make this random trash into one of the workable solutions?”
Yeah, and it still kind of sucks. The base game is boring as shit and relies on the items for any actual synergy. The BEST synergy that exists in the entire game without items, as far as I can tell, is the cleave+chain on Sinew + copycat, which does 3-4 damage to 3 enemies, which isn't actually all that impressive.
Berserker/Barbarian with the self heal is good, except you have to take the healers with self heal and they're mostly shit. It's also a max of what, 6 damage to one enemy? Meh. Valkyrie is really good with Roulette/Barbarian, I'll give you that. Wanderer/Ninja with buff spells from Fae/the other one are also decent.
I'm just disappointed on how item centric it is, because you don't usually get many items to play with. The best mode is Hypercurse/Blursed because of this because you can itemmaxx. Best shit I ever got was Fae + Duck (gives right two sides copycat) along with Wanderer and Ludus, which gave his middle side 5 x 6 damage on a good roll. Shit was cash.
The only real shame is that the mid to late game items are by far the best ones and you only get a handful of them each run.
None of the early items are actually that interesting.
It's a healthy 8.5/10 for me just because I really enjoy it. But if it got another content update that adds more items, classes, enemies and extended a run with a new set of floors it'd be 10/10.

Do any of the tier 0 items actually do a fricking thing or is it just a joke? I figure they're there for a reason, but I can't find any synergy.

They are all memes. There are only a handful of very niche synergies that you have to force them into that aren't worth it.

Slay the Spire is fun for what it is but I generally find card mechanics unappealing. Especially when they're poorly contextualized within the game, they were just added because they're popular and/or the devs were too lazy to come up with their own mechanics.
I just got this game off of gamepass last week. I've managed to get to the top of the spire (but not to fight the heart) once so far, but that was as a daily challenge, not a regular game, as those decks get boring quick.
Any tips for me to get to the top?

For me, it's Griftlands.
It isn't fully taken over, yet, but slay the sprire was pretty fun
This was forgotten right after release
I think Monster Train is the only STS derivative that wasn't forgotten about immediately, probably because it and STS are the only games in the genre that are actually good.
Love Monster Train its addictive as hell. Love magic fish prince and his buff wife.
My main issue with Monster Train is that it doesn't feel like runs vary that much in regards to enemies and random events (aside from the concealed cavern of course)
I thought it was cute. It was a least noticeably different from a lot of the other knockoffs.
Neoverse. After the first game I realized the game is pure coomer bait.
IMO Griftlands is okay, but the fact that each character's story is pretty linear despite a "roguelite" type of game can get pretty annoying if you don't want to re-read all of the dialogue.

Pic attached until they added rounds and rounds of updates while the StS devs just sat on their asses, so now I'm all right with it.
Across the obelisk, some cool ideas but

Status stacking is like the first thing hit by their equivalent of ascension levels

I'm annoyed by games that basically copy the "3 energy per turn" system that Slay the Spire uses, instead of doing something new, like Inscryption.
You mean ruins by being unequivocally superior? It also ruined AA and AAA gaming then.

It ruined it by being the only game still worth playing in that genre. There is no point in ever buying another game like it again.
I gifted this game to my nephew for his 21st birthday. 30 minutes total playtime so far. I'm never again giving people any games lol
Video games have to be the worst gift to give unless they've asked for something specifically. Otherwise, just give them a gift card.
I just wanted to give him something cool. He's a poorgay and mostly plays Genshin Impact. Next time I'll give him a sweater.
I only gift games to friends where we either talked about wanting to play it, or if it's co-op to play together, or if I am reaaaaaaaaaaaaally sure it exactly fits their tastes
Gifting a random game because you liked it seems overbearing, like those homosexuals who say they're only gonna let their kids play NES era games or whatever
He also plays the Yu Gi Oh games on emulator. I thought a card-based game would be up his alley. Didn't mean to be "overbearing".
The overbearing part is checking how much he played it and going "lol I'm never gifting again"

Something I see companies constantly ignore when ripping off custom games is that the lack of an MMR system/ladder is a huge part of their appeal.
As soon as everything gets oriented around an MMR system the fun playstyles die out

I dont like the inconsistency of the relic, even if said inconsistency is how sometimes is good and sometimes amazing, also I mostly play miracle silent decks.
Now coffee dripper and astroblade, those are boss relics, instapick everytime.
>astroblade
That sounds cool
Does anyone know how hard it is to make a mod if I havent touched a code language since highschool?
I meant astrolabe, but yeah that sounds like a cool relic, better than the boot at least.
Kek, I sometimes like to do custom runs with snecko eye as starting relic. End up with interesting decks if you start with it.
>pick this garbage relic
>brick on the first combat on act 2 and instantly lose
>people here are still too fricking dumb to realise snecko is good because of the card draw and not having to get energy upgrades and not because it makes cards cheaper
Reminder that 95% of people ITT have not beaten A20 on every character and gotten every achievement
The literal bare minimum for being considered somewhat competent at this game
>Draw 7 cards
>Can only play 2 of them because of shit rolls on energy costs
Yeah I’m going to go with anything that’s more consistent than that bullshit. Snecko and dead branch CAN be good but they both are a single RNG roll away from ending your run (Dead branch with corruption much less so but that’s one build on one character)
>t.Maybe moronic
>start with Snecko meaning you can easily build around it
>take high cost cards when offered them and avoid low cost ones to maximize the chance that Snecko is giving you a net benefit
also the extra cards in your hand let you draw through your deck faster and give you access to more options each turn even if you're not going to be playing everything, so it's still great for that reason too.
Very strong points. I want to get better at StS by taking relics and cards I’m uncomfortable with, is ironchad the best with snecko or can the other characters use it effectively?
In my experience Silent is not. Others can be.
Give her a couple of acros and like 5 sneaky strikes and she's infinite with snecko.
I fricking love going full moron on Ironclad and just picking all the super expensive, high damage cards with snecko
Silent works, but it’s weird
Watcher good, Ironclad good, and Defect good
It’s a good fricking relic
Meteor strike is an S+ tier card
one of the main things that makes Silent good is all the low cost and free cards (stuff like shivs) and Snecko doesn't synergize with that well. Silent also wants you to be playing a lot of cards in a turn and again Snecko makes this inconsistent. Defect has some really good high-cost power cards that benefit from Snecko.
or hear me out
>play ironclad
>UNGA BUNGA WHIRLWIND BRIMSTONE STRENGTH wiener
>win
Favorite mods?
>card game
>cards are ugly mspaint shit
whats the point then
The beta art is fricking legendary, they even started printing this stuff for the board game version
for me, it's "regret"
*ruins internet friendships forever*
Anyone playing Backpack Hero?
God, this character is garbage. No passive block, no scaling, no sustain.
BP scales like shit on endless mode
Is this fun? the only card game I've ever played was LoR and I thought it was pretty fun
Ive played the shit out of both and yeah its good
I looks good, I usually don't buy games but I'm going to buy this one when it's on sale because I've heard that the workshop has a lot of cool things in it
the runeterra singleplayer mode was inspired by this so yeah, its pretty good
Now that you mention it, runaterra might be the best StS clone out there, tons of replayability and meta proression as well, not as balanced but almost as fun. Totally recommend it to anyone that wants a StS clone to play for hundreds of hours. Its also free to play, I havent touched the main game mode past the tutorial.
making everything broken is really fun, like playing lux and shitting out spells, or customizing your champion and doing broken interations
Yeah its been a while since I played it, probably there are a ton more champs by now, but I remember the spells cost 1 less upgrade being so fricking game breaking but fun as well.
What mods you play with?
For me its Downfall. Really fun playing as the bosses.
Downfall is great. I also love Roaming Minibosses and Corrupt the Spire
The only fun thing about Downfall is Hermit, the mode is shit, I have beaten it
The bosses are shit, I have played them all
>campfire at the start and not before the boss
Lovely being forced into 4 combats straight with no chance to upgrade or rest before every boss because random generation fricked you over
Love having to chase down the merchant before accessing the shop
Fighting the 4 characters was the only good part, but the fights could be really unbalanced
Now answer the question
do you guys play the daily challenges?
No because they are piss-easy guaranteed wins with modfiers that either break the game so bad it isn’t fun to win or add annoyances that are overcome, but not fun
how is that touhou sts game
After futilely grinding to beat Heart for so long would playing ascensions be more productive and improve my skills or am I just stupid?
i found slay the spire to be rather boring. i should like it but i dont. yeah you can have some cool combos and stuff but it feels all so formularic. enter the gungeon is a much better rogue like, with some insane combination of items, a way better art style and story, etc.
I just got Nitro Kid, mainly because I like some of the musical artists. I think it changed the genre enough to be distinguished from most other knockoffs, the problem is the lack luster UI.
This one is pretty good but man is the rng even more frustrating than STS
so stupid so good (luv me some paperfrog)
much better than carnage
Literally dogshit, not even good in act 1 from floor 1
It's such a basic game but there's something about it that pulls me in.
INTRODUCING
I do not understand the appeal of these games at all
It's the modern day Cookie Clicker.
The essential, "I want to play games too, even if i'm a drooling mongoloid." experience.
A NEW CHALLENGER APPEARS
The deckbuilding aspect of Slay the Spire is the weakest part, but for some reason, it's the only part that copycats do NOTHING to improve upon. Frequent card offers but you stop taking cards less than halfway through the game because diluting your deck makes upgrades and removals worse and worse since they don't have any scaling to compensate.
Name how it could be better while still being random and without giving an insane incentive to pick up cards or skip them, like singing bowl
StS is already extremely punishing towards risky moves. Creating avenues aside from "pick the safest thing every time" doesn't reduce the decision making.
This prevents card offers from ever turning into noise because something happens no matter what.
man that game really pisses me off
That's not Super Meat Boy.
Why has there never been a indie deck building game that's mimicked yugioh?
they're too busy mimicking MTG/Hearthstone
How fat is your mod list boys
nice the mod count cut off
I can't fricking win as Silent.
Bro...Either go shiv mode (with Wrist Blade etc) or poison meme.
Shivs are my favorite.
Deck building was the natural progression roguelites were going into. And card battles guaranteed less work from indies.
If it wasnt StS it was going to be something else.
Slay the Spire is the only good rogue-like.
Deckbuilding is endless fun and only moronic netdecking zoomers get filtered by it.
I wish I was smoothbrained enough to not see that every deckbuilder has fixed, best solutions as a necessary consequence of design which reduces every strategy to “how do I most efficiently make this random trash into one of the workable solutions?”
How many solutions are there for A20 silent?
Deckbuilding is fine. The real question is, is it possible to make dicebuilders less moronic?
Slice and Dice is the peak pretty much.
The sides of the dice are moves instead of of a standard 1-6 value.
The best non-item synergy is Berserker+ Support Skills that invalidate the damage return.
Or valkyrie with any of the have a nice day abilities.
Any of the mana or armor synergies work too.
Why are dicebuilders so shit.
Any tips for me to get to the top?
um, sweaty, you're a little late. it's Survivors clones now.
