Yakuza has been wildly inconsistent with the use of dubbing throughout the series. However my biggest issue with this decision is that Yong defaults as the main voice for western audiences. At the very least it should be optional, actually you know what? frick that. It's about principles here, Yong does not deserve to be Kazuma. It's the fact that he has anything to do with the character.
It's a good point but we'd be best not letting studios establish the precedent that you can get away with hiring youtubers as VAs for major roles, else it'll bleed into games that should be played in ENG. Because it'll be cheaper than getting decent VAs and publishers will expect it to boost sales via audience crossover, and in a flash it'll be everywhere (and will be shit). I think some continental european dub industries already have this problem and it's drastically reduced the quality of voicework below the already-terrible levels

Yakuza series isn't for weebs. The karaoke parts is mainly the most ridiculous/over the top stuff in the game and certain mini games. Of course it's very deeply apart of Japanese culture. But outside that it's an action/drama about the organized crime underworld, as much as people like to have a giggle about it being 'serious'. I got into this series because that's what i like. I like games about the Italian mafia as well. I'm absolutely not a weeb.

If one thing is to be taken from the dub announcement, it's that his tweet about himself getting the role is full of positive comments towards him from his fanbase while also having like 20 times the likes of SEGA's tweet that is full of replies saying he doesn't fit the role at all and how they should've kept the old voice. Whether that translates to sales for Gaiden or 8 is a different question.
You should see the foreign dubs of animated movies that use nothing but ecelebs. I think the French voice actor of Ratchet in the Ratchet and Clank movie even shilled his Youtube channel in the movie.
All of the actual good anime dubbers (who also worked in video game dubbing) were big names in the scene literally 25+ years ago so they're all old or have moved on. Almost all of the new dubbers are just low rent local theather hacks or youtubers because the pay in dubbing is shit and nobody else wants to do it except for people willing to take any job they can get and fans who want to get into the industry.
The games with the best dubs/voice acting also tend to use western animation voice actors instead of anime dubbers. Shit like Metal Gear Solid and Grandia II have better dubs than stuff being produced now by virtue of having actual voice actors and not youtuber wannabes.

I dunno I've always followed this series in regards to western releases and dubs were not a thing until later entries, barring 1. If it was a consistent choice between the two then i would understand dub shaming, but not with Yakuza. A lot of people know he doesn't fit this character, yet they went with him anyway when they already had an established English voice for him who's voice fits really well for him and had people curious to see what he'd be able to do with better direction in a game where he's the focus. they tested the waters with dubbing with Judgement back in 2018/2019 then did a dub for Yakuza 7, even brought back the PS2 voice for Kiryu with Yakuza 7, which makes it even more confusing since they brought the guy back only to replace him for Yakuza 8 and Gaiden.
Realistically speaking, he's probably cheaper than any professional VA they could hire. Not that it affects me since Yakuza is like the only series you should play in Japanese.
I feel like Kiryu's PS2 voice would unironically be cheaper since dude doesn't really do anything else. Meanwhile YongYea is an egotistical c**t who probably sells himself really highly given he's used his youtuber status to get major roles in shit like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

His voice does fit Kiryu at all, not to mention the fact that the dude isn't experienced enough to be getting these kinds of roles and can't do them in a way that would do these characters justice. It becomes insulting since his lack of experience is extremely obvious when you listen to his characters, especially when he's in a role with a lot more experienced actors alongside him. When you have a series like Yakuza, which has a ton of established VAs and actual actors working on it, hiring someone so inexperienced and not qualified for such a major role just shows how shitty the English VA industry is compared to Japan's VA industry.
The Yakuza 1 dub had a lot of soul. It's terrible, but it has a lot of charm since the voices fit really well but are forced to deliver all the lines in a really funny way.
Both Yuyas are fine to me, I think his dub voice is pretty well cast, as is the case with a lot the series regulars in Yakuza 1, the only series regular who I think is miscast in the dub is probably the Florist. When I listen to a lot of the English voice choices for the original dub, I genuinely could see them doing some moments from later in the series pretty well, I just wish they had better direction and SEGA stuck with it.
I honestly just feel mad because they got back a lot of the PS2 guys for the dub of Yakuza 7(notably, Kiryu and Date's voices), which was a lot of attention to detail and a step they didn't have to do, so replacing them for the next game just seems like the studio cares less about that type of stuff while also invalidating the work that went into the previous game's localization
Why does SEGA like recasting roles so much. First we have the entire Persona 3 cast getting replaced, now we have Kiryu getting replaced? What happened to SEGA in the last couple years to make them decide that recasting their old english actors was such a smart decision. I remember they were even trying to replace the Sonic cast a few years ago both with Team Sonic Racing replacing a lot of characters and Roger Craig Smith being kicked off the role of Sonic then announcing that they changed their mind about it.

Lot of people are suggesting it has to do with the recent push to get white actors out of roles for characters that are non-white. Given Lost Judgement replaced a couple white actors from judgement with asian actors, it's not that far of a stretch.
If it really is a union thing, then Yong Yea is a hypocrite since he defended Hellena Taylor and said unions are important. So if the dude got fired for being a union guy, then Yong is a scab and doesn't have the right to demand better treatment of voice actors like he has in the past
The people against the recast are actual fans of the series meanwhile the people who suck yongyea off and tell people to cope with the recast are people who aren't even fans. And the ones who aren't even fans of the series and won't even buy the guy outnumber the actual fans, shit fricking sucks. I get real fans won't even play the game dubbed to begin with and wouldn't suggest it anyway, but a lot of people who are still fans of the series would at least agree that if they were going to do a dub, they should've kept the original guy around.

I feel like with how cheaply made a lot of dubs are, even for big companies like SEGA, that's just not really a likely option. You either see a lineup of very cheap actors who don't really deliver what is expected, or you get what happened with the original Yakuza where they got a super stacked lineup only to have no budget for a director or editor to make the lines work in the scene.

Yakuza Kiwami where they removed the entire minigame about Kiryu being in charge of a host club as well as scrapping an entire portion of the game that featured a small but different map from Kamurocho that had some extra story bits to it as well as some side quest and extra minigames.
They're just vastly overestimating the crowd that this series is able to pull. They've had one successful game and one successful normalgay meme and don't realize that most of these people will not stay around.

Yakuza has been wildly inconsistent with the use of dubbing throughout the series. However my biggest issue with this decision is that Yong defaults as the main voice for western audiences. At the very least it should be optional, actually you know what? frick that. It's about principles here, Yong does not deserve to be Kazuma. It's the fact that he has anything to do with the character.
No one does, he should simply not be the voice because he deserves to starve on the streets.

It's a good point but we'd be best not letting studios establish the precedent that you can get away with hiring youtubers as VAs for major roles, else it'll bleed into games that should be played in ENG. Because it'll be cheaper than getting decent VAs and publishers will expect it to boost sales via audience crossover, and in a flash it'll be everywhere (and will be shit). I think some continental european dub industries already have this problem and it's drastically reduced the quality of voicework below the already-terrible levels

If one thing is to be taken from the dub announcement, it's that his tweet about himself getting the role is full of positive comments towards him from his fanbase while also having like 20 times the likes of SEGA's tweet that is full of replies saying he doesn't fit the role at all and how they should've kept the old voice. Whether that translates to sales for Gaiden or 8 is a different question.
You should see the foreign dubs of animated movies that use nothing but ecelebs. I think the French voice actor of Ratchet in the Ratchet and Clank movie even shilled his Youtube channel in the movie.
All of the actual good anime dubbers (who also worked in video game dubbing) were big names in the scene literally 25+ years ago so they're all old or have moved on. Almost all of the new dubbers are just low rent local theather hacks or youtubers because the pay in dubbing is shit and nobody else wants to do it except for people willing to take any job they can get and fans who want to get into the industry.
The games with the best dubs/voice acting also tend to use western animation voice actors instead of anime dubbers. Shit like Metal Gear Solid and Grandia II have better dubs than stuff being produced now by virtue of having actual voice actors and not youtuber wannabes.

I dunno I've always followed this series in regards to western releases and dubs were not a thing until later entries, barring 1. If it was a consistent choice between the two then i would understand dub shaming, but not with Yakuza. His voice does fit Kiryu at all, not to mention the fact that the dude isn't experienced enough to be getting these kinds of roles and can't do them in a way that would do these characters justice. It becomes insulting since his lack of experience is extremely obvious when you listen to his characters, especially when he's in a role with a lot more experienced actors alongside him. When you have a series like Yakuza, which has a ton of established VAs and actual actors working on it, hiring someone so inexperienced and not qualified for such a major role just shows how shitty the English VA industry is compared to Japan's VA industry.

The Yakuza 1 dub had a lot of soul. It's terrible, but it has a lot of charm since the voices fit really well but are forced to deliver all the lines in a really funny way.
Yuya is one voice I prefer in English. Maybe it fits the initial character better, but in Japanese he's a screechy brat.
Both Yuyas are fine to me, I think his dub voice is pretty well cast, as is the case with a lot the series regulars in Yakuza 1, the only series regular who I think is miscast in the dub is probably the Florist. When I listen to a lot of the English voice choices for the original dub, I genuinely could see them doing some moments from later in the series pretty well, I just wish they had better direction and SEGA stuck with it.

I honestly just feel mad because they got back a lot of the PS2 guys for the dub of Yakuza 7(notably, Kiryu and Date's voices), which was a lot of attention to detail and a step they didn't have to do, so replacing them for the next game just seems like the studio cares less about that type of stuff while also invalidating the work that went into the previous game's localization
Why does SEGA like recasting roles so much. First we have the entire Persona 3 cast getting replaced, now we have Kiryu getting replaced? What happened to SEGA in the last couple years to make them decide that recasting their old english actors was such a smart decision. I remember they were even trying to replace the Sonic cast a few years ago both with Team Sonic Racing replacing a lot of characters and Roger Craig Smith being kicked off the role of Sonic then announcing that they changed their mind about it.

Lot of people are suggesting it has to do with the recent push to get white actors out of roles for characters that are non-white. Given Lost Judgement replaced a couple white actors from judgement with asian actors, it's not that far of a stretch.
If it really is a union thing, then Yong Yea is a hypocrite since he defended Hellena Taylor and said unions are important. So if the dude got fired for being a union guy, then Yong is a scab and doesn't have the right to demand better treatment of voice actors like he has in the past

Because it's now more important that your voice actor is the same race as the fictional video game pixels than how good he is at the job. That's a significant contributor to the downgrading of VA quality in the last 5 years, all the white peepo voicing non-white characters got shown the door

I used to watch his channel just for the casual vidya news updates but I blocked it after he did this sickening "interview" video with that nasty hobgoblin israelite jason schreier and yong sucked his shriveled israelite dick so hard it was unbelievable. It's public knowledge to absolutely anyone what a nasty evil israelite schreier is and has been for literal decades on the gaming scene so knowing Yong was willing to play nice meant I could no longer trust that he would be objective with his news and actually say what was going on. Seeing what he's done in the years since turns out he was selling out for connections and favors like every LA prostitute there ever was. And funny that I called it right there that he was compromised what with the whole CP2077 bullshit and now all his socials and channel are hyper moderated so no one can ever say mean things or point out any hypocrisy on his part.
All because this weirdo genuinely believes he's a "voice actor" waiting in the wing.
The worst part is that his 'content' is just regurgitating other people's lukewarm opinions.

Also anyone who uses the dub deserved it, I thought I'd try it out for 7 but even for new characters who I wasn't used to a voice for almost all of the dub voices sounded horrible.
