what compels someone to play the same exact thing for over 20 years?
its not even that good gameplay-wise either

Should I pick this up if I never really played Runescape before?
I need a cozy grindan game.
yup, that's what OSRS is, a cozy grinder
>cozy grindan
play Graveyard Keeper my guy, you can grind away, the story will wait for you.
it has cozy aesthetics, no voice acting so you can play it on mute and put up some medieval ambient video and no toxic teenagers to deal with.
i don't want it to end but i can't wait to play Punch Club afterwards
>crigneyard babysitter
no
>Should I pick this up
No
>cozy
lol
Exactly why i’m not going back. Even though it’s absolutely my most played game of all time it’s not the same game anymore. Hasn’t been for years. Started with the desert robe bannings and has been downhill ever since
runescape classic
idk which gay flag it is, but the one at the top left is nice. pink, purple, blue is a solid color scheme
what's the black, gray, white, purple, and darker purple one? one of the people in my apartment complex has that flag in their window
Play private server
Sunken cost.
trading is fun
It's a weirdly cathartic game to play, with enough skinner box mechanics to keep you interested. I've quit the game multiple times for months or years at a time, but keep coming back to it.
it literally is the greatest mmo to ever exist, design wise
content from 20 years ago is STILL relevant and done every single day and even provides best in slot rewards for certain situations
This
There is no wasted content, at fricking all
Even something as completely trivial as the cooks assistant quest is still relevant because it teaches you about cooking and is a requirement for a mid-end game quest while also providing a quest point and then finally unlocking the quest cape
I just going to pop in and nitpick that, completionism (quest cape) is not a valid point for relevancy in content.
I know this is not the point you were making, but Cook's Assistant is also relevant because it sets up Recipe for Disaster which unlocks the best gloves you'll own until lategame, and a bunch of other nice rewards from the subquests.
>your goal isn’t my goal so it’s not valid
>You see, the content is still relevant because I NEED to do it to get the award for doing all the quests in the game.
OSRS is like a quirky flat girl that has a cute butt
You know exactly what she has to offer but she tries to make up for it in other places.
wow, sold
Because OSRS isn't trying to be a failed WoW clone
Considering WoW basically standardized the MMO formula and like 75% of MMOshit is some form of WoW clone or adjacent, I'm not sure where this is going or referencing.
Not him but, WoW only set that standard by virtue of being the last one standing. It wasnt good gameplay or design on WoWs part since both of those were taken from EverQuest, it's just that every other MMO tried to copy WoW and died. Kinda like what CoD did to FPS
Wow's "good design" was taking the formula established by Everquest and making it accessible enough to have mass appeal. Which IS good design, even if that made it the cancer that killed MMOs or whatever.
That's exactly my point
WoW standardising the MMO formula was fricking poison that has been flowing through the veins of the genre for the last 15 years as literally every new MMO just tried to be WoW and inevitably perished. I play OSRS because it never tried to be WoW.
OSRS is anything but standard. It's been doing its own thing for over 20 years. There's else nothing like it.
It isn't good, I stopped playing because the spark isn't there anymore.
I have moved onto other autism.
You never quit, you just take breaks
You'll be back, in the fullness of time
The game is terrible and the company makes me sad.
Been gone since it got pozzed with the revived pride events and other shit
seeing black woman guards was actually all it took to lose a customer forever
number go up
autism
addiction. it's a great mmo that has been slowly stripped of it's identity and soul by the parasites at jagex, and it will continue to get worse. removal of the ge, meaningless death, introducing p2w bonds, enabling bots and goldfarmers, pvm shitting out resources, jagex sponsored cheat clients, etc. everything has been and will continue to be made even easier. don't be surprised if runescape becomes a full blown idle game too.
Bro its been an idle game for a decade already
Bro it's been an idle game since Classic,

Wasn’t there a version of RS older than this? The RS I fricked around in as a kid was like fully 2D or something.
Quests
The homosexual shit and bringing back word filters was enough to get me to stop. I stopped playing RS3 because I realized it's not the same game anymore. I now feel the same way about OSRS. The early months of OSRS was the most fun I've had with the game.
im glad i played this shit game in 2001 because all of my garbage items were worth like 3k usd 9 years later somehow.
Runescape feels like an actual game beyond being an MMO
Runescape's content is 99% doable solo, there are raids but you can do raids on your own if you're skilled enough
It also helps that leveling is segmented in different parts of your account, where you're incentivized to do different tasks depending on what you're feeling in that moment. There's not really quintessential "best in slot" either, there's so much situational weapons and gear in the game that everything serves a purpose
Its just an MMO that feels like a proper videogame that you can enjoy like a traditional videogame, not an MMO you view exclusively as an MMO
It was pretty damn fun pre-eoc. Grandmaster quests like Nomads requiem and Ritual of the Majarret or whatever were god-tier amazing. Not sure how things are now. Been 7 years since I quit
