Is it normal to get through every level on the first try? I just picked Slay the Spire and was able to beat the final boss on my first playthrough with this character. Is this game pretty easy or did I just get lucky?

I had a great run my first time too. I think it has to do with the fact you haven't unlocked any cards yet so you're more likely to build a deck that works well early on.
I played it when I came out and beat it on my second try. The game is easy if you understand card game fundamentals like having consistency in your deck. I don't know if most people consider the game hard, but they probably do since that's just how most gamers are, especially when it involves any sort of strategy.
You could say that about A0, where you are allowed many mistakes and can still win.
A20 on the other hand, the margin for error is much, much smaller, esp if you aim to kill the heart
Don't know what A is, probably looping the game. If there's 20 loops that just sounds incredibly boring. The game isn't even an hour long, they should have concentrated on making a proper campaign rather than juts making 20 versions of the same mini-game.
What you expected from a RNG game made in MSpaint.exe?
The meme of Ganker
Ascensions aren't loops, they're difficulty levels. A0 is default difficulty, each Ascension adds an additional difficulty modifier, to a maximum of A20 with 20 difficulty modifiers. Every time you beat the game at a given Ascension level you unlock the next one, but it's not a loop, it's a fresh start from the beginning.
Seasons???? In diablo????
Go back Black person
If you don't know what A is, that means you didn't beat the game
A0 is easy mode. Do you want a pat on the back or something? Climb those ascensions.

>everyone just knows what game you're playing
Become an hero, moronic underage homosexual.
yeah ascension 0 is difficult to fail if you have a basic understanding of card games
>play game on easy mode
>wtf why is it so easy?
Did you kill the heart? If it said Victory? you need to do the same with Silent and Defect which finally unlocks act 4.
Yes, think of the first run as a tutorial. The game gets very hard with even just a few ascension levels. I'm personally too moronic to beat max ascension
the city has the best music
You can consistently reach the end just by going by this strategy:
Only pick good cards.
Consider value on every card. For example, Ironclad has a shit ton of easy pick cards that have low value cost for high return. Inflame, Cleave, Shrug it Off, Armaments, etc. He also has higher cost cards that may or may not be worth it depending on when you get them.
Just pick cards that are strong with what you have right now, and synergies will emerge later when you have something to enable them. Trying to force a cool synergy will almost always fail, they have to occur naturally.
The game stopped being very fun to me once I realized some cards are just better than others and you mathematically win most fights just by having more of them
Not really. You win by having a consistent strategy you can apply. You also can't always get those good cards, so it's good to pick cards you normally wouldn't to facilitate that.
Ironclad is extreme ungabunga man anyways. His strategy boils down to pumping fricktons of strength and hitting something really hard or pumping a bunch of block and grinding enemies down. Silent, Watcher and ESPECIALLY Defect require you to really pay attention to what you have and pick from a variety of cards to be successful.
>ESPECIALLY Defect require you to really pay attention to what you have and pick from a variety of cards to be successful.
Nah I just picked whatever gives me funny energy orbs and block and it carried me through all ascensions
>be defect
>pick 'good cards'
>remove 'bad cards'
>fight nemesis
>draw defrag, defrag, biased cog, cool headed, zap, echo form, force field, creative AI
>"on turn 4 I will be invincible"
>oh wait hes attacking for 45
>die
>same fight
>took a shit-ass leap over second defrag earlier in the run because you already have biased cog and infinite scaling
>live
no, the secret is not to have good cards, it is to build a good deck.
"take good cards" means you take cards that are immediately strong instead of banking on a synergy later.
Combust and Rupture are insanely good together, but you could never take Rupture with the expectation that you are going to get Combust. Meanwhile Combust is alright on it's own and might be worth taking for hallway fights.
Meanwhile, when am I not going to want to take Reaper, Immolate, Seeing Red, Sacrifice?
>Meanwhile, when am I not going to want to take Reaper, Immolate, Seeing Red, Sacrifice?
I assume you mean offering, which is actually a card you never skip (unless you boss swapped to dripper or already have multiple copies). Immolate is easily skippable if you already have solid AoE like strength/whirlwind, seeing red is only good if you draw more cards than you have energy for and is actively bad in the deck if you already have more energy to spend than cards to draw, and reaper is very good to take in a vaccum and only gets better with scaling but should still be skipped for some form of scaling if your deck is still relying on drawing 5 card hands and playing cards that block/deal damage at base value with no modifications.
Yeah Offering, I'm tired. I should clarify that when I say "when am I not going to want to take X", I agree you should only take good cards if they don't already have comparable cards in your deck e.g. Immolate while Whirlwind is in your deck already. You don't just only grab good cards mindlessly because then your deck gets too fat and you don't draw what you need. You can still take mostly good cards and be successful.
>that's not specifically what you said aaa
Sue me, I'm tired.
>some cards are just better than others and you mathematically win most fights just by having more of them
Which cards are those? Sure, you can come up with cards that are almost always good to have, but when you're actually offered a set of three, the best pick depends on
>your existing deck
>your relics
>your potions (it's totally valid to beat an elite with flex potion + pummel and then find other strength later)
>whether you'll have a chance to upgrade it
>the upcoming boss
>the potential upcoming elites
>how many floors you have to get ready for each
and probably more. The depth of Spire comes from weighing all those factors, trying to guess what will work, and seeing how it pays off. There's some truth to good cards and bad cards, but even a curse like Pain can be part of a successful deck.
leap is literally one of the most value per energy cards in the game so I dont know what the frick you're talking about
No op. You’re a genius and special. I and everyone else on this board wants to be like you
>hasn't even beat the game on A0
I'm most likely giga moronic but how the frick do I stop being horrible at this game
take fewer cards
always remove strikes/defends at the shoppe
thats basically how you win a0
Common attacks that deal 9 damage are better than strikes that deal 6, but they arent actually good cards in act 3 when enemies have 500 health. You want to do things that scale, like strength and dexterity, vulnerable and weak, or cards that exhaust other cards every time you play them until all of the cards left in your deck are the best cards and you draw the perfect hand every turn.
Play the ascensions moron. You got 20 to beat.
Frick this makes me want to play again but it'll take forever to relearn everything.
not much has changed, many of the bad cards have been changed out for less bad cards but all of the good things from 4 years ago still work. unless you played back in early beta and you still think you need a curse deck to make immolate work.
Nah I mean metagame stuff like enemy damage numbers and appearance probabilities, and a general intuition of how my deck is going at any point in a run. I was doing A20(H) runs just a year ago but if I tried it now I'd get my shit slapped.
Personally I like to play at A15H. It's not easy, but it doesn't kick you in the balls quite like 20.
Game is easy. Heart runs are free up until ascension 15 with the occasional hic up in 1/10 runs. Just killing boss and not going for heart is moronicly easy up to ascension 15. Ascension 15-20 it becomes not easy and win rate drops.
