It's fun and definitely its own thing. The game has tons of soul, but beware the engine (and netcode should you try to play online) are dogshit. It's also notorious to try getting it to run on modern setups. If all else fails you should try the youtuber legionnaire's genpatcher tool, which I admit looks sketchy as frick but definitely works.
Need a Gaza mod.
By the way, how do you all play Generals in terms of controls? Vanilla or AHK scripts? It's beyond me why this game doesn't support remapping by default.
I use the vanilla ones but I'm just a noob. You can edit the hotkeys by editing the game files, or download some pre made alternate hotkeys like these https://www.gentool.net/download/hotkeys/

Genpatcher is basically just a way to apply some fixes to make the game run. If you can start the game it's not really needed. If the game crashes a lot it might be because it's running in a full screen mode and you have alt-tabbed. It's recommended to start it with the -win option to run it in a window. Some people also use an alternate d3d8.dll like d3d8to9 or d8vk to avoid using DX8.
I don't get why Zero hour is more popular and get so many mods for it than base generals when its AI performance is so fricking shit that will lag even the most modern PC to a crawl

Russia and Europe feel like full-fledged factions, and they have been sufficiently worked out.
I want to note that I really like Europe not only in gameplay, but also from an aesthetic point of view: This is a cross between all three parts of the C&C alliance.
GLA = Europe > Russia > China = USA
And yes... The anime in Mental Omega looks disgusting. RA2 looks cartoonish, that's right, but the style is taken from the comics of the 90s. And trying to add anime girls looks unnatural at best, like some Homestuck pages that change the style.
