On thing that i have noticed while talking to a friend of mine that has a family and good job (meaning, he is a normie) is that most gamers are not gamers like we used to be. He loves final fantasy 15 because it looks cool and doesnt take too much effort to play. He loves every AAA slop that comes out as long as it looks cool, has good graphics and the gameplay doesnt bother him too much.
Anything that is involved or indie he instantly hates. He often dismisses games because "they have bad graphics" (some of them they are a specific style, not even bad, just not realistic).
And what I figured out is that, at a certain point, these people became most of the gaming population, which is also why AAA studios keep making garbage games that sell millions.
Meanwhile I spend whole afternoons playing Binding of Isaac or Balatro or Risk of Rain 2 or some other indie shit with garbage graphics but with an engaging core gameplay loop. But these are not going to be mainstream ever. We are not the "weird guys" of gamers, despite us being there 30 or 40 years ago.

For one, the ending of Remake was pretty polarizing. For another, that's kind of what happens to direct sequels these days. Everyone predicted this the moment they announced Remake would be split into 3 parts.

In the west it's mostly AAA slop suffering thanks to years of corporate rot. Balatro and Manor Lords both just sold over a million recently with less than 1% the budget of FF7R (if that). Younger gamers also don't care about graphics anymore but that's all a lot of AAA games have over indies.

The lesson learned here is that Square Enix gaped their buttholes open WAY TOO EASILY for Sony.
Japan was one of the strongest regions for Final Fantasy and their PS5 pivot completely kneecapped it to all hell. We're seeing FF barely stabilize and/or slightly grow in western markets but because its Japanese sales completely shit itself, the game is underperforming hard. I don't even know if a PC port can salvage this because they barely tried to pander to that platform and they still haven't even fricking released XVI yet.
I don't know when Square made the deal but I doubt they expected for the Playstation to fall off that hard in home territory. They must have expected it to perform the same as PS4 did but well this is what happens when you make moronic exclusivity deals years before. The game being above Ronin but below DD2 probably makes it a 2.3 maybe 2.3 million seller so far. If you want to get the actual full story you need to have consumed every piece of FF7 media on the planet including mobile games from 2004 and novels that only got translated into English last year. Most players don't want to invest 100+ hours on the backstory just to play a single game. Rebirth caters extremely hard to the biggest fans of the franchise, at the cost of alienating casuals. It's the opposite of mass appeal which is what every other game is doing and we're probably not going to see more companies cater to mega fans and instead push mass appeal even harder after this.

The only thing Rebirth managed to do better than Remake was add those paired battle actions in combat (even then it was haphazardly implemented, leading to party wipes more times than I can count, because you weren't invincible during the start up animation), adding the ability to wear different outfits in NG+, and maybe Chocobo Racing...the open world is the exact same as it was in OG. More of a superfluous pain in the ass than a boon.
