There was never a SR2 remaster. There was a bug fix patch being made for the pc port that was essentially abandoned as soon as the main guy behind it died of cancer.

Saints Row 3 had the potential, the new engine and art style was an upgrade but it really lacked content compared to the second game, I dropped Saints Row 4 about a third in as it basically turned into wacky capeshit

Imagine if we got the trailer's Syndicate instead of the clowns we actually ended up with. In the trailer the leader of the syndicate is this badass that casually dispatches a bodyguard three times his size, meanwhile the game version is a pussy frenchman that gets squashed like a bug in the game's first act. Saints row 3 with 2's story quality and tone would have been incredible, perfect set up and they completely dropped the ball.
Jesus, it's still a little over the top but it's like SR3 completely shifted into a wholly different direction. That trailer actually looks like an escalation or basis from the prior games. What the frick happened mid-development?

As weird as it sounds SR4 actually isn't that bad a game despite it seeming like it would be worse than even SR3. It's a good Crackdown clone/Super Hero game and unlike SR3 it actually has tie-ins with the first two games' characters and their pasts. If you go into it knowing it's not in the same genre as SR1/2 it's actually pretty fun.
what about the OG?
SR1 is basically a beta version of what SR2 is. It has better environments and takes itself more seriously as a whole than SR2 but that's basically it. It's also much jankier and doesn't have checkpoints or difficulty selections so it's a much harder game to playthrough (frick that final Los Carnales mission in particular with it's unskippable several minute drive at the start)
2. Even setting aside the worse story of 3, the gameplay was boring and the missions that weren't simply introducing you to the activities sucked, the activities themselves were also worse than those in 2. The game as a whole just did not have much going for it and while I don't hate it, it's simply too boring to play especially with 1 and 2 existing.
4 was at least so completely different that while it's still not as good as 2, it was its own thing.

SR2 has the ugliest character models, the vast majority of them being oddly sunken or saggy skinned, Shaundi being about the only exception to this. They also by default have strange unattractive wide neutral stances on skinny models and janky looking animations. However it has the best story/cutscenes, best diversion selection, music selection etc.
SR4 and SR1 are interchangeable to me, at least in terms of enjoyment. Tonally SR4 is a bit too out there, but I do enjoy the super powers a lot and the song selection is great. 4 also improved upon character models over 3, though it is up to preference if you like the clay-like modeling of the later games. SR1 tonally is very grounded compared to the rest of the series, the humor is also subdued in comparison. Character models in 1 easily clear 2. It's just an absolute slog to grind of respect and the lack of mid mission checkpoints sucks.
3 just gets outdone in every category by the other games

But corporations run on multi year "cycles" where they dedicate themselves to a budget and a business plan. Many of them in video games happen to end after 2024 next year. I remember awhile back they actually said SR2 had too much choice and things to do which is why SR3 was scaled back as to not scare off the lowest common denominator. Sounds right since the majority of SR3's progression was activities disguised as missions to the point if you did them all before the story told you to a lot of things made no sense as the game skipped the intros/outros.

They all left between 2 and 3. 3 had something like less than 10 percent of the people who worked on SR2 as TH*Q viewed the second game as a flop due to it not selling billions immediately on release and made Volition do some layoffs.
SR2 ended up picking up steam after a slow start though but it was too late at that point to save the old devs.

Saints Row 1 is the only Saints Row I've ever enjoyed and it's permanently stuck on the 360 with no hope of EVER being ported to any console or PC. It's better than every GTA in my opinion.
It emulates really REALLY well on Xenia. It's fricking delicious at 60fps. Crashes pretty often though but it's getting better.

It's backwards compatible on Xbox. You can play it right now on a Series X at 4K 60 and it looks and plays just as shitty today as it did back on the 360. It's also emulatable on PC.

I played Saints Row 2 for the first time recently and I still think that 3 is a good game, maybe not as good but it's at least fun but wow, what the hell happened? They kind of had a consistent tone and did an unfunny 180° out of nowhere
They weren't satisfied with the niche they had and wanted to go bigger so they made the game stupider to attract more morons. Unfortunately thanks to TH*Q's massive marketing campaign SR3 did end up becoming the best selling in the series so the franchise was doomed from that point forward.

I played SR2 again on the Xbone about 2-3 years ago and other than the escape from the prison island being choppy as frick due to the raging waters the game ran fine. Don't know if they ever fixed that.
Both SR1 and 2 crashed regularly on the 360 so it still doing that today is an Authentic Experience.

Yeah, they stepped up their molding/painting process after the first few waves of Smash Amiibos. The Pyra and Mythra ones are super nice and since I won't buy the expensive real models they make a nice cheap substitute. The Sephiroth one is fricking awesome.
I do have some of the older ones and the difference compared to the new ones is like night and day.

10 years later and all they did was mod Saints Row 3 and remove all the original gangster flavor (even what little was left in 3) so the story can be about "People You Relate To" struggling to pay college loans by turning to crime. They literally aid that the new cast is so relatable you would want to invite them to your home to hang out with. Like what the frick.
I still don't get how you take a series about gangstas, gangs, hood antics, and corporate / government intervention incorrupt ways, and turn it into a hipster story about "IT'S MY MONEY AND I NEED IT NOW" where the main characters aren't even a gang but a bunch of douchebags blowing up half the city to make college loans.
Like, yeah you played as the villain in the first two games, but the Saints had a purpose. They even have the gangs in the reboot running amok and causing hell, so it'd make sense for a nuSaints to rise up once people got sick of their shit to take the city back. Instead you've got the most unsympathetic pile of bastards solely because they come off as entitled psycho frickwits written like a sitcom.
It doesn't help that their own game design undermines the entire point of the story they were going for. Four people can't afford a toaster without robbing a paycheck place, but you go behind a dumpster and a thousand bucks are just lying there.

I'm surprised Mafia is still alive and kicking. True Crime dropped out so long ago now after the Sleeping Dogs sequel had the plug pulled. It's really too bad. I remember the first time I was in the college district in SR2 when it started to rain and all the NPCs near buildings ran to stand under awnings to avoid getting soaked. Thought that was a neat touch. When it rained in SR3 NPCs just stopped spawning or didn't pay attention to it.

At this rate, it's far more likely that the team responsible for the Destroy All Human remakes are given carte blanche for Saints Row 1 and 2. Deep Silver wants to capitalize on the properties they've got, and the Saints Row reboot was such a massive financial disaster that they've admitted it lead to massive internal restructuring and they have to play it safe.
