Just by looking at the game Mario is maybe rendered in 3d to a separate buffer and then placed in the world as a sprite, the environments are either rendered orthographically in real time or are pre rendered, the backgrounds are composited with close layers appearing to be rendered orthographically/pre rendered and the distant background is either 3d with custom projection or is built in a way to give the illusion of a constrained perspective. While Sonic is a stock 3d engine with characters arbitrarily limited to points on an existing easily discernable axis Mario draws things in a very different way that ends up looking much closer to traditional 2d games, this is the least 2.5d game there is, hell if they just reduced the resolution and constrained animations to jump between points they could make this approach completely indescernable from actual SNES games.
As far as dick waving goes Sonic is just lazy, Mario's approach took a lot of unneeded work, it could very easily have just been straight 3d but clearly isn't.
Indies ramping up 3d platformers so Im good. Cavern of Dreams demo was fantastic with full game coming in october and last year Sephonie was really good.
I genuinely wonder about the timelines where Sonic was handed off to another developer

Imagine that, you would be able to start making your own Mario and/or Sonic games on a whim and sell them for money.
Sure, companies would have more resources than you to make better games, but they would actually have to try since they couldn't just sit on a monopoly of an old IP none of the current management had any involvement in creating. You'd have genuine meritocracy and competition.

The point of copyright laws was to promote the creation and development of sciences and arts.
To achieve that, they rewarded whoever innovated these fields a small and temporary monopoly over these innovations (never over 30 years).
After which, they entered public domain so that they could be further improved upon by any other person.
That's the point of copyright laws.
Later, however, Disney bent these laws to extented these monopolies essentially forever, which has lead to stagnation. No one can further innovate on these works without sticking their necks under the knife. And these properties are beholden to people that have no merit in creating them.
Understand what I'm saying? The laws, as they are now, don't fulfill their original purpose and on top of that are actually antagonistic towards that purpose.

Because these IPs are part of our culture, like it or not, and as such people want to comment on them in their own ways. It's why people care about Mario or Sonic but not random indie mascot- they are not part of the culture and are thus meaningless.
Not to mention that if you do have the ability to be competitive with these monopolies they can, again, use copyright laws to shut you down even if no infringement was made. Take Apple suing companies over their phones being too similar to their owns- apparently Apple invented squares now.
