"Sameface" art is everywhere, even today. For example, look at fricking Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts man Tetsuya Nomura: nearly every fricking person looks the same (at least in the way some gays accuse Toriyama and Shinkiro of being).

Plus, this is one of the worst examples you have for Shinkiro being sameface. His Nakoruru, here, looks nothing his illustrations of Mai or Blue Mary or whoever other of his female subjects.

I remember it coming out and being excited about being able to play FE5 finally with a decent translation, though I had my doubts when I read they were rewriting the text somewhat along with some other changes, but I played it anyway, and in the end, didn't mind it because I didn't know what I was missing. Fricking loved the game itself.

From what I can gather he changed character art and created new dialogue for npcs. Frick his shitty fanfic writing but at least he didn't insert any homosexualry

But this, I never even heard about until like a couple of days ago and began thinking what the frick. I have no problems with changing text to make it flow better in English, but this is just inexcusable, and now I'm wondering how much shit they did change in the end?.

thankfully someone else took over to clean up most of that mess

I read there now are newer patches with reworked text and lots of drama I've missed apparently. I hate that people just can't translate games properly, and am kinda pissed I gave the benefit of the doubt to this crap. But thank god there is a new patch now, and it's more faithful.

Been doing that for years. If it's too work, I translate as she plays it(like for Boku no natsuyasumi), I do that for manga and light novel too.

I can't get this patch to run on FBNeo (it loads up the NeoGeo CD bios and that's it; it also does not pick up the iso I've made with the patched cue/bin files) and on Neoraine it crashes as soon as it starts playing an audio file that's not a battle grunt.
I'm genuinely upset because I've been waiting to fully understand this 6/10 game for too long.

I read of people online who got this to run on FBNeo so I assume that's the only emulator who can do it properly. What am I doing wrong? Is this patch just fricked?

Generally the better teams I've been on for these sort of things have multiple translators and a few editors to clean up the more raw direct translations. That way you generally have people keeping each other in check so you don't get people going nuts and inserting bad memes and jokes everywhere. You can kind of tell which projects had just one person out of control in them vs projects that had everyone working together and keeping that kind of stuff in check.

ive noticed newer fans tend to have a bitterness/grudge against the old guard of a fanbase, i think its because back in the day people were more hostile and less welcoming, and more elitist. the new fans see purists as "neckbeardy" and holdovers from 90s weeb culture so they go out their way to piss them off. the toxicity is still very present in new fandoms but the pure elitism and rudeness of the old fandoms have been completely replaced with the new blood "positive toxicity" where people who prefer certain things/dont like others are ostracized from the community in the name of "keeping the peace". i think sonic fans are a good example of that.

He's right though. Putting romanized japanese words in an English script is stupid - it's as bad as persona games leaving in all the honourifics in their english scripts.

Either translate it or leave it out entirely.

Honorifics exist in modern translations almost entirely because early fansubs kept them in, so people got used to them. And even then, it's only the common ones like "chan" and "kun" that get kept most of the time. You very rarely see "Heika" left in the subs just because it has direct English equivalent.

          Anonymous

Using Japanese honorifics in a Japanese set, English translated story is no different than using Mademoiselle or similar forms address in French set, English translated stories.
The only people who ever screech about honorifics and advocating for entirely localized scripts are midwit Americans who think they're super smart but have absolutely no understanding about language and the interplay between languages. That's not exactly what happened in some of those games though. For example in Sakura Wars GB Burntends went out of his way to replace entire lines with memes referencing anything from Scott Pilgrim to Sony's 2006 E3 Press Conference. He also went through and renamed and changed the graphics for all the mini games to be references to random Sega Games that they originally didn't reference at all. When anyone else on the team tried to speak up or correct those lines he told them the lines were off limits and would kick them off the team if they tried to touch them.

You can tell these people dont actually give a frick about these games as they were intended and want to larp as wanna-be localizers from the 90s instead in an attempt to get some kind of cred as a translator.

If you are playing a heavily Japan-centric game, you are probably the type of person who already knows about some of those untranslatable bits of the language, have come to expect them, or like them. This isnt the same thing as keeping them in a Mario game or something.

its perfectly fine and adds to the atmosphere.

honorifics are easy as frick to just tack on to the end of the name and have it make sense. pronouns are a little different and harder to localize properly. ive read doujins where they leave them in when its appropriate though

Why stop at just honorofics for names? Let's also preserve them for verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc. Then we can have lovely translations like this "One day I'm going-masu to marry-masu you, Sakura-dono. Our o-wedding will be-su o-splendid."

If I remember correctly it's a response to a LIPS prompt. In the original Iris says something about liking to eat Pancakes and one of the responses is along the lines of "Eating too many sweets is unhealthy, you'll gain weight" and she responds with something like "You're no fun oniichan!" Burntends though really likes Scott Pilgrim and insisted on putting a "bread makes you fat" reference and kicked any translator off the team who tried to change it. While it's not completely off base, it is out of place and makes the exchange far more extreme than it originally was.

They didn't add that line. The original game used the term "newhalf" or something which "troony" is a fairly accurate translation. It's debatable whether newhalf is as much of a pejorative as troony but it wasn't something the translator added all willy nilly.

japanese to spanish is literally half way to english. Spanish is basically english with extraneous words, letters and diacritics.

It's a neat thing but the real SamSho golden goose is getting pc ports of the 64 games or proper emulation for them.
But yes, I can guarantee this is a kusoge. Not a bad kusoge, it's a 6/10. It's nice but in retrospect it's a disappointing title because you keep thinking how better it could have been... it's marred by a shitty OC that makes the whole story about herself and her stupid clan, boring dungeons, too many random encounters and a nonsensical difficulty curve.

They absolutely could have made a good spin off because the core idea of multiple protagonists and side stories is strong (kinda like SaGa series or Seiken Densetsu 3), but in the end it's just mediocre. You play a SamSho RPG for its SamSho characters, not Original The Character.
The most offensive part about this OC, Leon, is that an actual character who could've been a regular party member dies by sacrificing himself for her in an uneventful cutscene. It's one of the game's lowest points.
Its actual good story scenes are the ones exclusive to the character you picked as a protagonist, which are plenty in Amakusa's chapter but they're too far inbetween in Mizuki's chapter.

Another lame thing is that all the three versions of the game have different post-game extra content because SNK was greedy... and they orginally wanted to split the game between three consoles.

they are "fluffy" pcb aka brand new which is nice

      >"un-working designs" style retranslations
Those patches just undo the gameplay changes done by WD. It says so in the first post by the patch author in the RHDN summary thread. It says so in every readme and RHDN page for the patches.
I have no idea how you mouthbreathing midwits still get this wrong.

I think there's a segment of people on /vr/ who insists that only bad games never got localized, so he's implying that if the game was good it would have been brought over by WD in the past and gotten a retranslation or something.

NTA but Id say no not really. The story is an adaptation of the first 2 games so its not like there's any backstory you're unaware of. In fact since this is an rpg it probably has more backstory than all the fighting games combined.

FBNeo but you need to convert your patched multiple bin files into a single bin file to play it. Otherwise the emu won"t start the game.
You can use the beta version of CDMage to do it, very easy.
Obviously you'll also need neo geo and neo geo cd bios (those go into the rom directory like in mame).

Shut the frick up you're not even going to play the game in japanese or in the old unfinished french translation, you're just here to complain about political sperging instead of discussing SamSho RPG.

            Anonymous

I'm not going to play it because I have too much on my plate. I'm not making any arguments about politics. It's funny how if the translation teams put contemporary political quips or memes into their games it's fine, it's not political, but when you complain about how low-quality such behavior is, then -you- become the politically charged one. Here, let me throw some accusations out at you; you only support such garbage because you're a mindless consumer drone who needs their next content fix.

I can confidently say that I can pass on shitty translations for obscure jarpigs if the translator wants to be a snide c**t and shove twitter garbage into it. There's more than enough out there to enjoy that this can be ignored without consequence. Enjoy your slop.

Yes you absolute gay you're only here to shitpost and make the millionth post about gay trannilators, nobody wants to hear the same song and dance just to hear it, you need to have actual reasons to complain. The translator said he just added references to old shitty SNK translations, like picrel, and not twitter garbage-- two extremely different things. You can argue it's still cringe but it's far from being political sperging shoved in.
You don't even care about the game itself you're just here to complain at a strawman living rent free in your head. What even is the point of complaining if you don't care about Samsho and SNK?

If I'll see any cringe political agenda in the translated script I'll be sure to post it and complain about it. But as of now 2 hours into the game the script is normal and devoid of typical fantranslation cringe. They kept the woman at the start of Haohmaru's story complaining about Nicotine slapping her ass so I can assume that as usual you gays are making a big deal out of nothing.

I tried the Saturn port a bit and it's interesting to see how much has changed.
In a way it feels like a rebalance: it has a saner difficulty curve and the special techniques cost much less to do, also random battles came up at a normal pace instead of every 2 steps taken. I couldn't remember the price of items or swordsmith upgrades but the latter looked the same.
The music selection is also slightly different and not all maps and npc locations are the same: in fact the first dungeon, Mount Fuji, is much easier because right after the demon tree bosd they put a red Kuroko who heals your party.
Also it seems that it has a bunch of weird bonus content like being able to get Genjuro's frog to follow him around every town (it's so cute that it's a shame it's not in the NGCD version).

There are a bunch of cons though: the animations are worse, the post-game omake in the NGCD version is undoubtedly superior (an extra story with Shizumaru as the protagonist) and I doubt whatever they put on Saturn tops it, the loading times on PS1/Saturn are worse...
The pause menu is also way uglier and I have no idea why.

      Anonymous

Samsho RPG had a very weird development cycle, and that ties into the ports too. SNK’s PS1/Saturn ports were weird in general. Like you might get a bit of extra content but the music/animations would get messed up.

        Anonymous

I think animation was one of the hardest thing for them to account for in home console ports until the PS2.

honorifics are easy as frick to just tack on to the end of the name and have it make sense. pronouns are a little different and harder to localize properly. ive read doujins where they leave them in when its appropriate though
