He saved the day for his own cause because he rescued brother, helped out the kingdom on the side, and defeated Bowser to protect him home. Princess Peach standing up for herself or holding her own is irrelevant and expected. They're not making her a damsel in distress. However, her constant exaggerated facial expressions, the story not allowing Mario to be announced or known, the pacing or skipping over of character building, and some underutilized plot points are the actual lame parts. It seems it was cut short to keep it as a 90 minute movie. Other than that, some criticisms just come off as desperate mgtow nerds.

They made her more of a ruler which is something we don't see a lot in the Mario games because it's not a plot heavy game series, but Peach being a capable fighter and able to traverse the Mushroom Kingdom has been established canon ever since Mario 2.
Peach considering herself the protectors of the toads and doing things a ruler of a kingdom would do to protect it is not "Girlboss Peach", that's "PRINCESS Peach". She acts like a queen of her kingdom since that's basically her entire function up until Mario arrives and takes the role of her knight. Also for anyone saying she should not be acting like a queen since she's a princess, she's literally only a princess rather than a queen because she isn't married yet. That's why Bowser wants to marry her, to become King of the Mushroom Kingdom. I'll admit that making Bowser so blatantly in love with her could be seen as a change to his character, but he did literally spend the last big Mario game chasing her down with a bunch of wedding planners and then sulked when his proposal was turned down.

It is average, painfully at times. I still don't think Peach was that good and I would expect more from Daisy then Peach. Certain characters are gone for no good reason (looking at you Toadsworth). The music was pretty bad with 80s/90s top hits that don't fit in at all in the place of potential vidya music that would have suited much better. Seth Rogan was the worst actor. 5.5/10 I wouldn't watch it again unless I was babysitting a kid. Thankfully I didn't pay to see it and didn't waste my hard drive space for it.

Peach in the movie doesn't act like Peach (this goes for most of the cast but Peach is by far the most egregious of the bunch for obvious reasons), they purposely downplayed a lot of her mannerisms due to obvious sociopolitical butthurt since they view them as negative (even though games where she has been playable would use them as a positive), they tried damn hard to make her extremely "cool", "competent" and "tough" also due to said sociopolitical butthurt (you can just read the words from the Director and Anya to know this), poor writing makes segments where she does lose questionable and lazy, and due to them Trying Too Hard™ to have some obvious Girl Power™ moments she became yet another modern cliche of animated female characters and a pretty generic portrayal of a classic character as a result.
Yes, the end result could have been much, MUCH worse then what we got in the final product, and would have if it was by any other company. And yes she does not accurately fall into the category of "Girlboss" compared to what the trailers would have you believe. She's still a major disappointment in almost every way outside of having a relationship with Mario.
I think they should have made her a bit more reserved rather than so confident they made her in the movie and I would have felt that was more in her character, but they did make her very sweet and affectionate towards Mario which I think makes up for it.
People like to point at a few scenes in particular to point at Peach being a girlboss, but I think the context of the movie makes these a lot less b***hy than you'd take them out of context.

Peach throwing Mario I have a problem with but different from other people. I think the comedy was warranted for Peach to hurt Mario, and I agree with the overall premise of the scene. The issue is that Peach judo flipping ANYONE is widely out of wack, similar to Peach's stance being karate chops. She is not that physical in how she fights, her style is generally not martial arts. Her abilities are either more magical or if they are physical they are much more graceful, ladylike. There could have been other, more "Peachy" ways she could have blown Mario the frick out there, but instead they took a painfully generic route and this fact shows a horrible misunderstanding of how Peach behaves in her VERY FIRST SCENE.
Again, everything about Peach's backstory in the movie is just not written well to me, so the explanation itself feels like a halfhearted excuse. Again this is a whole other topic about the movie in general
Peach calling Mario "not important" is similar to the judo flip, there are other more Peachy ways for her to try to skirt the question of who Mario is. Though this issue is one I don't care about compared to other people here
The halberd is the same thing as the judo flip. In a true Mario setting Peach would not wield a halberd, period. It's just not how she is portrayed in any capacity. It should have been her picking up her parasol. The Halberd scene was by far the most egregious example of the writers trying too hard because they know how some "people" criticize Peach. Funny since its useless and she doesn't even use it
Peach knocking Kamek out, soloing everyone at the wedding, freezing Bowser, killing King Bob-Omb and only being knocked out for a second was another "we're more focused on Peach looking "cool" and "tough" then actually trying to bring this classic Mario character to life" moment. It is one of her biggest major blunders in the movie though, and funnily enough it's self-afflicted, which itself just kinda speaks volumes.
