It would actually not be all that hard to write a filter that is reasonably good at detecting slurs and alternate spellings of slurs like using a '1' instead of the 'i' without catching words like "night" in the net too, spellcheck is not exactly cutting edge technology, but I guess that would require actual competent developers.

Plus it is prone to false positive and misses, requiring to take derivation and deviation into account within the error margin. For ML sure but video games? Regex is just way more straightforward and covers a lot of cases easily. I'm sure you are smart enough to concede that.

Doubtful due to huge amounts of false positives that require you to use a regex anyway. Word list is not enough since it's more likely that someone misspelled a non-blacklisted word.
This is (part of the reason) why word filters should not be a thing. There are so many ways to go around them that they are either almost useless, or utterly restrictive towards even normal speech.

Some weird things get censored. They've remade almost all of Minecraft's textures. Playing Devil's advocate here, but there is more to video game art than just drawing, design is arguably more important. With that said, Mojang doesn't do nearly enough to justify an art team of more than 3 people, including Jappa.
They have fricking not remade most textures, I've been playing since mp was just fricking sponges everywhere and the textures were made by one guy as placeholder textures, then they just never changed.

Boot Minecraft in any version after 1.14 and look inside the "resource packs" menu. You will find the "Default" (new textures), and "Programmer Art" (old textures).

However, admins couldn't differentiate between someone typing out 'smurf' and someone swearing unless there was really specific context (smurfs were an in game enemy). Yet profanity, and indeed seeming to just trigger the filter, was banworthy. It's been like 20 years and I'm still butthurt over it.

They've remade almost all of Minecraft's textures. Playing Devil's advocate here, but there is more to video game art than just drawing, design is arguably more important. With that said, Mojang doesn't do nearly enough to justify an art team of more than 3 people, including Jappa.
They have fricking not remade most textures, I've been playing since mp was just fricking sponges everywhere and the textures were made by one guy as placeholder textures, then they just never changed.

Never understood the purpose of implementing both a censor and automated bans for profanity. The word is already censored, what point is there in a ban?
I used to play a text based game called Phantasia 4, and profanity would be censored to 'smurf.' However, admins couldn't differentiate between someone typing out 'smurf' and someone swearing unless there was really specific context (smurfs were an in game enemy). Yet profanity, and indeed seeming to just trigger the filter, was banworthy. It's been like 20 years and I'm still butthurt over it.
How good is minetest? I think I may start taking a look at that. I don't play Java edition that often but if Mojang is going to start pulling more of this shit I'm going to permanently quit the game.
