Scrimblo design has fallen. What even are these Western game designers looking at when they make these designs? It's not even like they are copying 2010s cartoons or something, where is this coming from? Arzette is maybe explained because she's copying a style but even then it isn't close to it really. What is going on?
Left is the only design I dislike, and since my taste is perfect and objectively good that means you are a homosexual for disagreeing
I don't understand why everyone hates Penny. When put in the actual setting of her game she's got this wonderful abstract 50s-60s German "designed but abstract" look, like that Olympic mascot they did.
Just shut the frick up and accept that the design is shit
No amount of your shilling will change that fact
I'm not "shilling", I gave my opinion. Feel free to rope if that bothers you, homosexual.
>ask why design looks the way it does
>get explanation
>S-SHILL!!!!
I know you got nothing else going on in the ghetto that you live in but there are DEFINITELY better uses of your time
But that looks horrible
>German opinions on art
Say no more
Overdesigned and intentionally weird-looking
I'm sure that appeals to fans of mid century olympic mascot designs.
Sneed
As a fan of mid-century olympic mascot designs, yes, it does. I like how the game limits the color pallet to mimic old RGB printing methods, too.
>it looks good because it matches its repulsive artstyle
maybe thats the fricking problem with it. the game looks like an ad for health insurance
>repulsive artstyle
I like Penny the problem is her weird eyes
They don't realise that these designs are supposed to be readable immediately. You always have to fricking squint with these to even recognise.
Look at Sly cooper, you can immediately tell what types of characters and professions they are from a single glance. I can't even tell what left is, right is a generic link ripoff and Penny is too visually busy and complicated with her body being like a yoyo
>with her body being like a yoyo
That's the point.
if she had the yoyo torso that might be fine but every part of her body is a yoyo and it's a bit much. Maybe I'm moronic but it took me awhile to realize she was supposed to be like 10 yoyos. I think simplifying her design would help make the yoyo-ness of it stand out better.
wait, the turtle was in a combat wheelchair?
He got crippled at the end of the second game and is in a wheelchair in the third.
Gotta a cutie at the end of the day too.
Frick the forth the game.
I guess Bentley's dick still worked if he could land a chick
That’s the biggest problem with every visual medium in modern entertainment. Visual clarity and readability used to be extremely important because people had to be able to interpret things on smaller screens. Now that people are playing games on monitors the size of TVs and watching TV on massive behemoths, clarity is no longer the most important aspect to designers.
>Look at Sly cooper, you can immediately tell what types of characters and professions they are from a single glance.
A fricking shepherd, moron?
>Look at Sly cooper, you can immediately tell what types of characters and professions they are from a single glance
sly cooper's designs are fricking ugly dude
they got better in sly 2 and 3 but even then sly's face is still frickawful whenever he's facing the camera
Western cartoonists design for ideal 3/4 shots and nothing else, it is grim
Sly 1 is especially funny because the main completion reward is versions of the opening/ending cinematics done by a Jap studio and they look a thousand times better
?si=0_R3uyZaKNqLtFaH
They even took a bunch of the design changes from these and made them canon in Sly 2/3 (like Sly having blue gloves)
>Western cartoonists design for ideal 3/4 shots and nothing else,
It's kinda the opposite with Sly, actually. His face looks fine when he's facing down or to the side, but if he's looking at the camera or in 3/4th they draw him with this ugly-ass Pajama Sam looking grin (pic related)
i'm sad bunny bounce got cancelled
https://twitter.com/MortMort_/status/1756348530384351503/video/1
it looked so fun
>Another Twitter “game” made purely to get attention was canceled
Called it lmao.
Lizardman when is your game coming out
At the latest, the end of 2024.
My dragon game has to drop during the Year of the Dragon and I am going to make sure that it does.
Godspeed, anon! The year is progressing fast.
Maybe that could happen if you stopped shitposting here.
>let's make sonic but devoid of attitude and westernize marina from mischief makers
She has always looked like she was drawn by a person who learned to draw from "How to Draw Anime" books
That literally WAS what generic anime looked like in the late 90s, though.
I love their melted faces
I do not see the problem with right.
Just design a human character instead indie devs. Maybe playing as a human in a Sonic-like would be unconventional but it would be more aesthetically pleasing than whatever this shit is.
Unironically way better but has a vaguely gooner aura
looking at her from the back she looks too jack-of-all trades and not a speedster
This looks like an SFM porn character
no it lacks the extra detailed plastic skin
>blatant waifu design with no stand-out gameplay characteristics present
meh
Thats actually the problem here, they wanted to appeal to furries but decided to make super stylized humans for all three and it doesn't work except Arzette. The "let's basically put a human in Sonic" design philosophy you want is how you get the left.
except its not? thats some squid thing. just make him a stylized anime boy with spiky hair.
Spark.
>The "electric jester"
>does not act like a jester
>does not use electricity powers for most of his first game
Anon, there's a jester in your bathroom above the sink
Fark is cooler
played the third one. hes alright but fark is cooler. i also hate the grounded combat
This is the best of the Sonic clones because the developer went full Hispanic Dragon Ball Z/Sonic Adventure 2 mode. Brazil won.
Spark won so hard its not even funny.
It doesn’t take much to be better than Sega in the current year
Freedom Planet 2 failed in that regard. And it wasn't just being "better". Kishimoto acknowledged Spark and its clear what they were thinking giving Sonic a combat system in Frontiers.
>its clear what they were thinking giving Sonic a combat system in Frontiers
The combat in Frontiers was added basically as another "activity" for the player to indulge in while running around the open map, just like the random obstacle courses, puzzles, and boss fights. Hence nearly every combat encounter being placed in very specific areas, and are easily avoidable.
The whole game is just a bunch of shallow experiences that were designed in separate vacuums, then quickly stapled together around the end of development because Sonic Team had no idea what they were doing when developing an open world game.
>Sonic Team had no idea
They had some idea.
I feel like everyone who calls Frontiers a BotW ripoff has barely played open world games outside BoTW. The former rips off the latter's presentation style, but that's about it.
Frontiers feels more like a shallow Ubisoft checklist simulator with Shadow of the Colossus elements, if anything.
>Play the first game
>Intro says Spark has a circus act and it's fairly popular
>Update comes out that changes the story and cutscenes around
>Now intro says Spark's show sucks and is unpopular, he only has it because he lost his other job
Such a weird change.
These games look fun as frick but this design sucks so much and jesters aren't cool
Spark's design always came across as a fan character the creator came up with as a kid/teen and could never let go of.
I get they're trying to make them look like a lightning bolt, but what does the jester part have to do with that? is it just an excuse to give the guy a hat?
The creator is a Kirby fanboy. The jester hat showed up in some of his earlier Sonic fangames.
Cause a jester hat comes to points near the top that they can then design into a semi lightning bolt shape to match his motif. It's a pretty clever design choice actually.
The western mind cannot comprehend appealing designs for fear of being called weeb coomers
Maybe they're afraid of it being called a furry game, or being called out for using the "diversity loophole"
>white kid's living his best life and is clearly loved and taken care of by his parents
>bear's having fun because animals don't fret over race grifter bullshit
>all the brown/yellow kids are neglected by their parents but will blame wypipo for it
Why is it the white man's burden to make shit for other people. Mexico and Asia makes tons of media for their people. Native Americans and Africans just need to fricking step up. You wouldn't go to fricking China and complain that there's a shit load of a Chinese shit everywhere. Also, animals are universal which is why they're second to primary audience
>it's white people's fault other races aren't being pandered to
Tiring. Maybe these studies should encourage those from "diverse backgrounds" to write more of their own books.
>but then there's still too many white people!
Because white people are more prominent in these areas. Go figure.
This legitimately is almost exactly the racial breakdown of the US. At worst maybe a few more Latinos are needed but it's pretty damn close. What's the issue? Breed more if you want to be a higher percentage of the population bro.
Just checked, if anything the people who should be complaining most are Latinos, every other group he is proportionally represented but them. So if this is a "not enough black kids books" it wasn't true pre 2020 and almost certainly isn't now.
Maybe if African Americans wanted to be more represented in books, they should write more.
Seriously, as a black american myself, most blacks either write fiction or material aimed at adults. The most I see in stores about black kids is aimed at girls.
Black boys don't need to see themselves in fiction to identify with it. It's not a race thing, it's a gender thing. Same goes with white boys
They already have dbz so the niche is filled
Ah yes, animals, my favorite ethnicity.
People here always complain about big name companies and indies but don’t make anything of substance themselves. If you’re so good, make a character and game or offer someone to make them a character and show your skills
Sorry excuse of a board full of so called gaming intellectuals, just as bad as the shit you see on Twitter.
Here's your good "current year" scrimblo.
She's actually far better than thees others
No.
Yes.
Mhmm.... goat.
if only her game were more finished than a glorified demo
Fair. Movement is great, but everything else needs expanding.
Funny how a scrimblo design that wasn't even meant for a real videogame managed to look much better than these three.
He's supposed to be repulsive but is still somhow less bad
What is Gwimbly supposed to be a rat with an anus prolapse? I know him looking random scrimblo is the point
I think he's supposed to be a pencil
The prolapse is actually an eraser, and his nose is the graphite
>The prolapse is actually an eraser, and his nose is the graphite
Holy frick, you're right.
>gwimbly was a wild woody reference all this time
Man... This show is really just Oneyplays crossed over with the Cusackverse.
I think he started out as a mosquito but then they modified the design
"Buzz off why dontcha?"
Going off design trends in smiling friends and the context of the game. Gwimbly is supposed to be some kind of bug. Same reason why his trusty sidekick and beloved uncle Mr Millipede is also a bug
I honestly think he's a weevil. it would go with his sidekick being a bug like the other anon said
Volvy is better.
Too generic. Gwimbly feels like he had some actual thought put into his design.
The two on the left are an overdesigned mess. And fail to capture the 90's cereal mascot vibes. The right is not even a scrimblo, she's an attempt to copy a Zelda character if they were uglified in a bad CD-I game but she looks more like Tumblr Shantae
right already failed because it was pretty much based on memes
it's like making an unofficial successor to the room, it just doesn't work like that
Right, it has to be unintentional. Like Yiik
>Scrimblo
back to fricking twitter
Well, Arzette is clearly an homage to CDI Zelda. Dunno who the other 2 are.
>Arzette
what a disappointment that was.
>game was marketed as a "actually good Faces of Evil"
>the cutscenes are legit boring, they have the same MS paint style but lack the whacky fluidity. Also they arent crazy.
in Faces of Evil, if you entered a house with a guy in it, the guy would say something along the lines of "Oh Hero, the evil forces are advancing and all out of Meat! Please get me some Moblin meat, for I am STARVING!" while the animation has the guy jump from one place to another, opening an empty cupboard and slapping his belly, as it gurgles with hunger. In Arzette, the guy would just say "Hi. Im John Villager." while standing there, waving with his hand.
The gameplay was better, but nothing to write home about. People care for Faces of Evil because of how batshit insane it was. Also way to many minorities, felt like a massive ESG play. felt pandering.
>c-chud
Yes I am a racist and proud of that. I can look behind ESG shit if the experience is worthwhile. Yet it wasnt so im adding it to the list.
>ESG PANDERING MINORITIES
Yes
She's not wrong. If it weren't for the Lesbianisms and homoerotic undertones, then Arzettey and forgettey gets away with it just fine.
rollin rascal is literally the definition of a soulless design. its only a step up from making your main character a blob with eyes. theres no vision. its a "we wanted to make a game with sonic but we also wanted to make money so we whipped this up in 5 seconds" design.
It's a design solely meant to complement the gameplay. "It's about rolling, so uhhhhh, guy turns into a capsule and rolls around". But there's more to Sonic than rolling down hills
Rollin Rascal is a Sonic fangame reskin so devs expect people to mod Sonic back in.
Biggest issue with indie mascots is they often feel both over and under designed at the same time. I think it stems from choosing awkward places to add style. It's never in the face or body, it's always weird accessories.
Wokette flopped.
I know that it's not really popular here, but I really liked the style/designs of the Corn Kidz.
...And no, this isn't me being nostalgic over Invader Zim or something. I'm from northern Europe, we didn't fricking get Nickelodeon over here in 90s.
I really liked it too. Too bad the game is so short
The game has gotten decent sales and ended on a cliffhanger, so hopefully we'll get Corn Kidz 65.
>NitroShit made a video about it, praising it to high heaven
>increased sales by 6 units on steam
but I thought youtubers spoiling the whole game was supposed to be good marketing? what the frick?!
They're trying to replicate 90-2000's mascot designs and failing miserable because, unlike the Japanese, they are afraid of being honest and appealing.
The Japanese literally designed all of their Scrimblos to appeal to Americans first and foremost. Their own mascot characters meant for internal consumption rarely if ever try to be "cool"
The big problem with these mechanically solid games made by fans-turned-programmers/designers is that they make way too safe characters.
Like yeah, I don't think anybody is offended by Penny or Rascal, but nobody looks at them and goes "Wow, that's a really cool character! I want to play as them and draw them!"
Sybil is a nice example of actually appealing character design, and looking at other stuff by Rittzler, he has good knack for this... Though he'd probably need somebody to hold him back from making things too horny.
>Sybil is a nice example of actually appealing character design
No, it's an example of coomer character design
I'm not a fan of it either but it's a lot more tasteful than most coomer designs these days.
This, but for some of Kings of Hell's characters.
>what they are
>what their color is
It's that easy. Chubby plumber in red and blue. Speedy hedgehog with blue spikes, character design is the easiest thing in the world. Maybe AI replacing artists is simply natural selection.
The guy on the left looks alright, the other two look like complete abominations though.
test
i got an idea for a platformer thats like shadow the hedgehog, jak and dexter and wario that has play as cyborg faun that delivers packages in futuristic setting.
Games made by people whose sole pastime and interest are games are always going to suck tremendously and feel bland, soulless, and amateurish. It's a sad kind of regurgitation from people whove never left the nest.
Indie devs also need to figure out how to leave their bedrooms and gain social skills instead of blaming muh autism for everything, so they can work with other indie devs. They think that because they can download all these crazy new engines that they can make OOT now, all by themselves, ignoring how the vast majority of notable indies have miniscule production values in art and music and whatever else compared to ANY of le japanese nintendo classics that they worship so much. It's like they think the majority of developers for those classics were just engine code monkeys, like now that they have the tools they can all be Miyamoto. It's silly and very naive, which perfectly suits the personality of someone who rarely leaves their room and does nothing but play games. Frankly it's embarrassing.
Look, I'm not saying it's impossible, but for fricks sake think this stuff through.
Right doesn't even look too bad.
Left is absolutely awful
Penny feels like a punch in the face whenever you look at her
Rollin' Rascal is pretty accurate to the "cool" designs of the 90's but also suffers from most of them being godawful ugly; Penny suffers from extremely awkward proportions, terrible hair, and being very busy; Arzette is fine but suffers from copying an already ugly artsyle, and would look actually good if recreated in some other style.
